Title: Big whoop: Sony makes another idiotic mistake and then attempts to cover up.
Post by: Aridas on April 29, 2007, 05:56:23 AM
A really really long URL (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23394277-details/Slaughter:%20Horror%20at%20Sony's%20depraved%20promotion%20stunt%20with%20decapitated%20goat/article.do)

It's all there, folks. Some of you probably are already aware, but hey.

((edit: linked the URL so it doesn't mess the window up. -- llearch ))
edit: I should have probably done this in the VG section, but I figured that it was more about what sony did than what they did it for that mattered in this case.

Honestly, I have a hard time raising a hissy fit over it.  It was an adult party and promotion (and I mean geez, there were topless servant girls even.  Its obvious its playing to the old-skool Greek debauchery).  People are acting like they just dropped down and did this in the middle of a crowded mall.

That's because it's cool to hate Sony. Seriously, it's what all the cool kids are doing.

If I wrote a trojan that infected millions of computers with a backdoor that couldn't be removed without destroying the Windows installation, they'd throw away the key.  Deliberately releasing a CD which does that as a normal business decision is a perfectly valid and justifiable reason to dislike them immensely.  The other stuff is pretty much small beans and I couldn't care less.

in an attempt to keep this topic from straying off course, i agree with amber on this one. god of war is an M rated game and this obviously was intended for adults. besides thay arn't doing what the greeks have already done. and who is to say that goat was a real (perviously) live goat anyway? that article was pretty biased. the best news comes from indiffrent parties.

I will give them the benifet of the doubt that it was a real goat.  Though I've been to a few pig roasts and other various animal cook-offs where people had gone out the day or two before to pick the animals they were going to eat themselves.

And really...I like animals...and I can realize some people are going to be really yicked by the gimmick aspect...but it still was used for food in some way.  Granted it wasn't displayed in a very respectable manner, but as long as they killed it swiftly and with mercy, I dont think its going to care how its carcass is being displayed.

QuoteSickening images of the party have appeared in the company's official PlayStation magazine – but after being contacted by The Mail on Sunday, Sony issued an apology for the gruesome stunt and promised to recall the entire print run.

lol, dead goats in ur magazines

edit: also, I wasn't paying attention... so here's another snippet.
QuoteWe have reproduced the spread – headlined Sony's Greek Orgy – here, but have pixellated the image to spare readers the sight of the goat's decapitated head hanging by a thread of tissue from its corpse, with blood dripping to the floor.

But the magazine's readers were shown the picture in its full horror.

The article, based on a Sony Press release, shows more vivid pictures from the event under headlines such as Topless Girls! and Flesh Eating?

It asks readers how far they would go to get hold of Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 3.

"How about eating still warm intestines uncoiled from the carcass of a freshly slaughtered goat? At the party to celebrate God Of War II's European release, members of the Press were invited to do just that . . ."

Hooray!

And in the middle east today, normal families were invited to do just the same to goats in celebration of every damn day over there.

Sensationalist 'tards! It's no worse than some of the horrors that occur in this country. It's cool and it's greek and GoW deserves such an interesting party.

Either way, it's still sony doing something people had some kind of reason to take a fit about, and they're busy passing the blame around.
Title: Re: Big whoop: Sony makes another idiotic mistake and then attempts to cover up.
Post by: Amber Williams on April 29, 2007, 10:38:52 AM
Yes. Because Sony is a single individual who is solely responsible for everything that is involved from product creation, development, and marketing...and not a variety of people and administration levels amidst a large international company where the potential for misunderstandings and communication problems can occur.
Title: Re: Big whoop: Sony makes another idiotic mistake and then attempts to cover up.
Post by: Aridas on April 29, 2007, 10:49:46 AM
And it IS the higher-ups responsibility to be in the know about these things, isn't it? even if not, the people making the bad decisions for sony are still representing the company.

let us bask in the vague-ness of the previous post.......

Okay now, as an American, I've got to say that people have a right to choose how they wish to live (so long as their way of life doesn't interfere with another person's right to choose).

The party itself, theres nothing wrong with it (see above).  Putting the images in a magazine?  Nothing wrong there, I mean I've seen worse scenes in news footage with HUMAN carcases.

In fact, the only reason sony would recall the image is because it might hurt sales due to people not having any logical processes in their brain.

No, they wanted the blood to dissapear too and the meat to be magically cut up and put in plastic containers, ready for cooking in a kitchen of stainless steel.

You've got wonder, what are they (those who complain) worried about? It wasn't that many generations ago that kids here were taught how to slaughter cattle themselves.

Dude Ari.  I'm not a Sony fan myself and even I can sort of see the snideness when you comment about Sony and such.  The title alone is basically a "Sony sucks" flashing red sign.

Yeah, Sony hasn't been exactly stellar and I'd be willing to bet a good chunk of the people here aren't expecting anyone to suck off the company.  But getting all defensive when someone calls you out for having a hate-boner for Sony isn't gonna matter.

So there was a marketing flub in regards to PR.  It happens.  I fail to see how it can really be chalked up to product failures.  Its not like the guys in game promotionals are working the factory lines.  If you hate the fact a product is being suckytastic, then do so.  But piling on the "Rawr! Sony iz teh failz!" for things that have barely any relation other than the company behind it is being snitty.

And I note that the article never even mentioned exactly when and how the goat was killed.  If they did it just before and were humane about the method, then how they handle the corpse shouldn't be such an issue.  Getting all gory on a dead thing is morbid yes, but in some ways not moreso than what probably goes on in a meat processing plant.  Now if they painfully killed the goat, I could see issues.  But so far all I've read is people going "oh noez...it was graphic and gory and my sensibilities are traumatiiiiized."

Not so much offended, as thinking who had the bright idea to go with the goat sacrifice.  Seriously, how is this a good idea.  Topless drink girls, good idea, everyone loves naked boobies.  Putting a dead animal on display...yeah, why didn't anyone think this might click badly with some groups, especially some very loud and annoying people who are like "OMG, Murder!" everytime they see a dead animal.

Sony keeps shooting itself in the foot, and whoever thought this was a good idea needs to get fired.

Has nobody ever seen pigs over a spit? Has nobody ever eaten a hamburger and wondered how they treat the carcasses and how bloody the whole cutting up a cow really is?

But those were for an actual purpose. And the corpses' pictures don't really get put in game magazines either. But that's beside the point. They should've known it wouldn't go well with people, especially with jack thompson running around. He'll end up declaring the PS3 satanic or something.

*Cracks up* Yes! Brilliant! Lets recreate the debauchery of ancient Greece to promote our game that includes the like, and then invite the press! That probably went about as well as selling crack at a press release for Grand Theft Auto. I'm sorry, but isn't "Don't let the press know that your game includes icky things" sort of basic? I mean, Jack Thompson, upset parents, Fox News... Do I really have to say it?

What, they killed the goat and DIDNT eat the flesh?

If that was the case the only thing I can say is that are a wasteful bunch. Other than that, I hardly find it offensive, distasteful perhaps, but not offensive. It may be going for realism, but its just not appropriate.

I guess I got used to it. my grandfather was a butcher, he taught me how to kill animals. Bleeding a goat to death trough its neck was just another way of getting the meal on the table.

The only critical bit is to do it -right- - otherwise the goat doesn't die quickly, and you've got to go get it from whatever corner it dragged itself into...

Firstly: Jack Thompson tries to declare everything videogames is Satanic.  He recently tried to pin the VTech shooting on games and said the kid used the Columbine mockumentary game as practice...despite the Columbine game being done in a Final-Fantasy RPG tactic format.

Secondly:  Yeah. Bad PR stunt, and odds are the person responsible is going to lose their job.  Not that that is going to make the news because really no one actually cares over the potential drama and "THINK OF TEH CHILDREEEENZ"

Thirdly:  There is little to no details about the goat in how it was killed, what was done afterwards.  There was mention that they were doing a fear-factor style meal where you were to reach in and take something from inside the goat to eat...but outside of that I doubt anyone is going to get info out of "oh my it was bloody and it was icky and it was soooo terrible."

Fourthly: God of War two is supposed to be an epic game. All reviews so far seem to point that it is impressive...though insanely gory and mature themed.  And really if anything this stunt will likely just get people who were fans of the game to be even more eager to buy it and people who werent goign to buy it to begin with not wanting to buy it.  So stalemate.

Should i say something stupid here please tell me but...

I've played and beaten both god of war and god of war 2 it had some similarities to greek legends but they twisted alot of it to attract fans nowadays people like violent games and they were made to appeal to that sense...

The greeks were in some ways ahead of there time and they put alot of effort into enforcing thier beleifs i dont think sony nessisarily did anything wrong but they probobly shouldn't have done what they did in going off history books and past knowledge you wouldn't nessisarily know what they actually did in thier little rituals but i do agree with most of what you've already said if the animal was killed quickly and painlessly and the remains were used as much as they could be then there's really no harm done besides with the large ammount of goats in the world im sure that one is happy being released from the evils of this world...

and also the devil or lucefur if you want to get technical was the angel of music he played the music in heaven and later on invented rock he probobly has been blamed for the video games and movies but really it's the peoples choice not his he wants them to make them yes but he can't force them to it even says that man kind has power over him but he will attempt to decieve the fragile minds of the mortal realm...

i am against the killing of the goat but honestly i dont think they would care if i threw my opinion at them...
When this world does finally come to an end judgement will be passed and that will be the end of it...

Biblical debates aside, it's general knowledge that satan was the angel of music. You could ask anyone at my old church and they would have told you that. Whether or not that is valid, whether satan exists, whether god exists, whether the bible is better off as toilet paper, is a moot point. The actual part of the bible that mentions it is, as usual, very vague and isn't as simple as "Hey guys, Satan was totally into Rock."

I understand that it's not really a logical thing to just repeat what your parents told you and it's good to question your surroundings and life itself, but on the flipside you don't need to spit hot flames at someone like that Aridas. Some people haven't reached the age or period in the life EVER where they sit back and become disillusioned with sunday school teachings.

What it boils down to is that I am telling you not to do something on the grounds that you have no right to do so. Same applies for me but I am trying to be scary and perhaps maybe you wont realize :)

As are plenty of people, but that doesn't mean you have to be a dick about it. Religious indignation knows no bounds! Once you get some people started about what they believe in, they are not going to stop until you either concede (not going to happen) or someone brings down the BAN HAMMAR! Not saying that this cute little fellow is the type of person to foam at the mouth, but keep it in mind.

No matter what you believe in, we're all a part of the same forum family! We are all petals falling into the wind of change!

OOOKAMA WAY!

Ah!  I have found the reference (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/4255/study24.html)!

Ezekiel 28:13, which reads:

You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, carnelian, chrysolite, and moonstone, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald; and worked in gold were your settings and your engravings.

It's so obvious, why didn't I see it before?

P.S. Lucifer means ``light bringer.''  Satan (which isn't an exclusive term for the devil--see the book of Job, where God and ``a satan'' take bets on whether Job will betray God) means `adversary.'

Also: The Angel of Music is Lon Chaney.

Right! Thank you. People tie that to rock music or anything else media related. It's typical procedure, so I trust we don't have to sit and talk about legitimacy.   D:

Eating animals raw is a good way to get parasite infections!   D:  *pulls a 3-meter-long tapeworm from somewhere unmentionable!*  See?!   :yuck

By the way, according to the article I read, there wasn'ta ctually food being taken out of the carcass. The soup was served in seperate containers, and the carcass was returned to the butcher shop it was borrowed from after the event.

Actually, there are several animals humans can eat raw and not become infected with parasites simply because most parasite that infect the animal will either be destroyed in the human body or passed harmlessly through.  Seriously, tapeworms aren't the only parasites in existance and they don't infect every animal.  Plus you could just avoid eating the meat around the intestines.

Also, if the goat came form a butcher shop then its mode of death should be "humane," though to be honest death is death is death.  It happens, we profited from it, move along.

FINALLY!  I'm not the only one that sees the self-perpetuating wheel of stupidy!

You never were. I just can't see the point in providing them with attention. Either party.
PETA keeps putting up tasteless, disturbing stickers in my local GoodWill. One of them shows an animal's skinned, bloody corpse, with the phrase "Fur: No skin off your back." Another one has a picture of a rabbit with a shaved leg with a patch on it claiming that it is the subject of inhumane experiments. Another shows a caged chimp (Obviously out of context) with a poem about it dying alone and in pain. They covered the soap dispenser with a fake warning sticker that reads "Warning: Animals Suffered to Make this Product." And they're putting these things in the children's section! Not only that, they put them on books so that if you try to take them off you rip the pages! WTF is wrong with these people? The stickers serve no purpose other than making people nauseous.

the article was clearly biased and therefore NOT a reliable source. once you pick a side you will sometimes bend the truth in your favor such as

i see an an owner hitting its dog in a corrective manner to keep it from making number 2 on some mans lawn. now pretend i am a peta member. i an outraged by this act and therefore wish to write about it. insted of writeing
"today a man hit his dog in a corrective manner to keep it from makeing number two on a man's lawn"
i write
"OMG i saw this man rite? and he liek hit his dog FOR NO REASON! and like it makes me nmad n stuffs!
now do you see how the media can bend a story till you hear what they want you to?

not wrong, misleading.  newspapers make money by people buying it right? they use shock to do so. are you going to buy a news paper that says everythings fine nothing to report or HURRICANE IN THE MID WEST 900000 killed?
in the same way are you going to buy a paper that says: "sony bought a dead goat from a butcher shop filled it with soup and pretended to eat out of it as if in a greek party promoteing god of war 2 ot are you going to buy: Slaughter: Horror at Sony's depraved promotion stunt with decapitated goat(copypasted)
Title: Re: Big whoop: Sony makes another idiotic mistake and then attempts to cover up.

I think Lucas is trying to say that the magazine, like many things in the press, might be pushing a particular point of view(which may be biased) in the desire to shock-n-awe thus sell more copies.   And honestly, it does seem a bit "oh em gee! TEH HORROR!" and avoiding many potential questions like where did the goat come from, was it killed humanely, etc....but rather focused on a spectator point of view.

In this case, I could see a need for multiple sources and a more legal-boring version that focuses more on the hard facts rather than the emotional pull.
