Title: Formula 1: The End of an Era (OT)
Post by: bill on September 10, 2006, 12:35:38 PM
Another topic that nobody will care about, but meh. 7 (and possibly 8) time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher announced his retirement today after winning the Italian Grand Prix. He's been one of the best drivers of all time, and fully deserves a spot next to names like Hill, Ascari, Stewart, Villeneuve, Piquet, Prost, and Senna, despite whatever contraversy he may have caused. Shame to see him go, but that's F1. Taking his place in Ferrari will be Kimi Raikkonen, who currently drives for McLaren Mercedes. Guess I have to like Ferrari now.  D:

truly, the man is a legend...despise of some of his actions like throwing the car up someone's else to get a better result or just stoping the car during a time trial cause he already got his best time, i don't remember the dates to say when these things happened (don't force my mind, hangover here) and even being compared to

the man is still a legend of speed...and deserve being called one of the greatest ever!

What a local radio personality says, support the colors, not the individual (with the caveat to give them your support as well, just don't be all ARGH when they leave), because individuals come and go, but the team is always there.  Going out at the top of his game.  He deserves big props.

I always thought there was no Swiss motorsport since the 1955 Le Mans accident. Same reason that Mercedes withdrew from racing for so long, and that the AAA doesn't sponsor race series like they used to.

I fail to see the excitement of modern day races. so forgive me if im mildly apathetic in this issue.

you take a car, a remarkable way of traveling quickly from one place to another in comfort, then you remove half the safety features, two thirds of the comfort, and reduce the fuel efficency and lifespan of the moving parts to 10% of its original, and then zoom around and around and around for several HOURS.

thrillsville  :U

the least they could do is arm the drivers or place obsticles or at the VERY least use a track which is not oval or a figure eight

and theese fans half the time are people who think that LOTR is a boring movie

and will SOMEONE tell me how a four inch decal on a car that goes around in a circle at 200 MPH is effective advertising? im sure it costs a small fortune for some sucker who isnt extreeeemely wealthy enough to buy the two foot decal space on the hood.

im sorry if ive offended anybody, but most of you have probably seen the views and opinions of Amber (cant remember new last name) regarding her past in indiana. so if you didnt complain to her shut yer yap.

When you worry, when in doubt. Run in circles, scream and shout!

Brunhidden:

You're welcome to your opinion. It's a perfectly valid opinion, and the fact that a number of people disagree with you doesn't make you wrong :-)

Just a couple of points - the 4 inch decal isn't for when the car is moving. It's for when it wins, and the photos get taken and spread all over the local paper than the local yahoos drool all over for hours.
-That- is worth the money, because you get hours and hours of advertising, for, effectively, nothing.

I agree with you about arming the drivers, though. :-) Nascar would never be the same...

Well, F1's Suzuka's a figure 8 track. Too bad it's a crossover.

Those are called contingencies, by the way. These are official sponsors of NASCAR, not the team. Putting these stickers on generally make the team eligible for cash bonuses for winning, leading the most laps, etc.

I'm not a big fan, in fact, I almost never watch motorsports. but there is a difference between nascar and F1  :B
the first is as you described, dull, with chopped down cars (ok you do lose some weight by removing the extras).
F1 use special cars with strict regulations, go to higher speed and I bet they're safer and more advanced than your regular car. Race tracks are usually filled with obstacles and are far from being just oval or figure 8 like  :P

but yeah, I'm more into doing it myself than watching, even if all I can race on is a go-kart, as long as I'm exhausted and had fun with friends I'm happy  :3

only one thing...for those who doesn't understand races:

''TRY TO REALLY STEP ON YOUR CAR IN A STRAIGHT LINE...WHEN YOU START FEELING LIKE YOU SHOULD LIFT THE RIGHT FOOT...STEP MORE DEEPER AND FORGET ANY FEAR...''

feels like you are riding the wind and it surely feels great...

by the other hand, it might be cool for one and dumb for the other...like sexual orientation for example...you don't choose...you are chosen! ;)

Harvick won, which kicks ass, since he leads the Nextel Cup standings now. His Reese's Chocolate driving suit, by the way, likely can be seen at least 5 miles away. It's freakin' day-glo orange. Anyway, I got a Coast Guard Harvick hat, to commemorate his total and utter rape (600 Pt. Lead) of the Busch Series. The US Air Force recruting guy gave me a free diecast too. We also saw a huge wreck at the end, Truex got spun on the frontstretch, hit the inside wall hard, spun across the track, and got hit by Kvapil. Everyone was alright, but that meant that Harv didn't get to do his burnout on the frontstretch, which was meh, since he does the best burnouts.

somebody will have to explain whcih forum members are 'darkside' and why, although i will take it as a compliment

sheesh, how many mario karts have there been? at least CTR had the upside of including a bandicoot, an animal with some originality. italians have been racing for a while, and theres more then one famous mario at the wheel.

although- does anyone else thing that real racing would be better if you had the ability of droping miscilanious crap on the track?

QuoteJust remember, anything can be a weapon at your disposal.

Meanwhile, in more troubling news...

QuoteTop Gear's Richard Hammond is seriously ill in hospital after a crash in a rocket-powered car while filming for the programme.

The 36-year-old presenter was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary's neurological unit.

A spokesman for the hospital said Mr Hammond was "stable".

Mr Hammond had been driving a dragster-style car capable of reaching 300mph at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.Former firefighter Dave Ogden, who runs private firm Event Fire Services, was one of the first people at the scene of the crash.

He said: "We were down there with Top Gear who were filming him trying to break the British land speed record.

"On the previous run, the car had just gone over 300mph but I am not sure if it had broken the record.

"They had just done one more run and were planning to finish when it veered off to the right.

"One of the parachutes had deployed but it went on to the grass and spun over and over before coming to a rest about 100 yards from us."

He said his crew and an ambulance that was already on the airfield rushed over and found the car upside down and "dug in" to the grass.

Mr Ogden said he felt for a pulse and heard Mr Hammond breathing before the emergency crews worked together to turn the car the right way up and then cut him free.

He added: "He was regaining consciousness at that point and said he had some lower back pain. But he was drifting in and out of consciousness a little bit."

Former Top Gear presenter Quentin Willson said the presenter was "irreplaceable".

He said: "He is a wonderful, unique and distinctive Top Gear presenter. "He has brought an awful lot to the programme and his indefatigable energy, the fact that he tries absolutely anything once, may have been the reason that he has overstepped the mark a bit.

"He has turned Top Gear into a gang show with Jeremy and James and the three of them have wowed audiences all over the world and he is an international personality."

Mr Wilson added: "There is no pressure from the BBC or the producer to take undue risks.

"But that pressure is in your own head. You want to do an item on the programme which is mindblowing.

"You want to do a fantastic item that blows everybody away."

The presenter, who works on Top Gear with fellow hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May, was born in Birmingham, educated in Yorkshire and lives near Cheltenham with his wife and children.

In addition to presenting Top Gear for the BBC, he also fronted Brainiac on Sky One until recently.

Bumped:
Michael Schumacher's F1 career is now officially over. In his final race, he blew a rear tire early, but made an astonishing drive, inclucing a monumental overtake of Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren, to finish 4th. He also set fastest speedtrap, and race lap. Truly an amazing driver, and a shame to see him go.
