Taxes are actually a good thing in a socialist economy, provided that the money is being funneled into the correct areas.
So Amber's in Canada, yay! I already appreciate the humour in Amber's comic but perhaps now she'll be influenced and infected by Canadian humour, which isn't all that different from British humour. I feel that a mad cackle would be apt, here.
That said, I hope settling in goes easy for you, Amber and that there are no unforseen problems. So you've finally made it, now you can kick back and enjoy a cup of tea and a really good scone.

Why do I get the feeling I'm going to be chased out of this thread with rotten fruit?
I'm afraid I have some bad news, Amber. You'll have to come back, I just found an almost full container of Bold! Fruit Tic Tacs that you must have left in my car the other day. Please come down to Ohio and I'll give them back to you.
*gasp!* My tic tacs! :U
Heehee...
Well...now that I've gotten things a bit running smooth...I can give a better update.
The trip went well. Relatively easy traffic...the nice thing about taking the route we did was that it literally took you straight to the bridge in Detroit rather than having to traffice weave. The most stressful part was probably just the few minutes before reaching the border just because we had no clue what to expect.
But huzzah for Windsor border peeps. The guy looked at my birth certificate/liscense...then asked for my car registration. Since I had gotten that changed to my name before I left, it was all good there. Then he asked a couple default questions (alchohol, tobacco. Did Mason get any gifts while in Canada, etc) and that was it. He didnt even ask what I had in my car...which had Piff. So basically...we got waved through pretty much.
The drive remaining was a giddy breeze, and we made it to Mason's place safe.
I'm now giving my new computer a test spin...and I gotta say its pretty spiff. Right now I'm redownloading my two sites since the main thing I lost was just data. Microtek scanners were awsome and I got my scanner back and running. Photoshop is working good though I lost all my fonts. Also the new monitor, despite being an LCD screen...is pretty sweet. Its an Acer, and when I was looking for monitors, I chose it because it did have good colour contrast which will be good for the artings. Course its a lot wider so I'm running on a much different resolution (and go figure...its one that I don't have as an option for my own wallpapers) But its good.
Its all good really.
But yesh. New comp seems to be happy running good though I have a few quirks I need to beat out. Everything is familiar but somewhat new so its wacky. And I got a lot to get used to.
Still. Its just a relief overall. This past month has been a stress-ball. And the past week was me worrying about what might happen come attempt two. But here I am, and now I can start getting back into life.
Weee. :3
Im glad you made it Amber...Finaly some progress...I bet your back is killing you
So.. I guess we might see some wallpapers in a new format, soon? :-)
(no pressure, no pressure - do what you want, you're the artist, now please don't kill me forum-goers! :) )

And though I can't magically recover all your lost fonts: In case that you actually forgot your DMFA-related font names (which I doubt), I remember you once posted at least their names on the old board (http://nice.purrsia.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=79;t=001689#000007) :P Glad to hear that something silly like that is among your larger worries right now, though. :)

Ahh the windsor-detroit bridge, that gets *alot* of traffic, good they were in the friendly mode (which quite often they are, though there are misserable days). Though going over for the 'extended visit' is likely a lot easier than the accidental plan the other border guard tried with 'lets try to make you a Canadian right now!'

I didn't really intend to imply that Canada did exercise British lingo with any frequency, it was actually more of a sideways compliment. I've gotten on famously with all the Canadians I've met and we seem to have a lot in common.
There are many Canadians that I tend to believe are British until they tell me otherwise, simply because of their demeanour. For that reason, I consider 'em brothers, they're as close to the British way as anyone could be.
Hence, whenever I wing a sideways comment at the Canadian peoples, I usually make sweeping generalizations of British mannerisms and/or habits at them. I'm not sure whether they see it as a compliment o'course but in my eyes it is, so that's probably okay.
Must be nice to be with your sweetheart, Amber. :3
And may the power protect you! *sounds like a talking head in a jar*
Western Vs. Eastern Canada
Ready... FIGHT!
I've only been to Eastern Canada, and the people I met said 'eh,' 'soory,' and 'aboot,' among other silly pronunciations. Though my dad's been to Western Canada and said the same thing. :| Perhaps you can't tell because you've never heard the words pronounced any other way. I'm sure foreigners say Americans have accents, but since I'm American, I'm used to the way we speak and it sounds normal.
GO WESTERN CANADA! :D
I've never heard anyone say most of those things except eh, and everyone I know has said eh (even americans on those rare visits). Some of that other stuff is probably come from newfoundlanders, since they have lots of crazy words and phrases
Sounds more like the "eastern" Canadian accent you're describing is more like an Ontario accent. When I think of eastern Canada, I think of Quebec French and the maritimers in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.
Most of the people I know from Manitoba or Saskatchewan don't sound much different from those across the border in Minnesota or North Dakota.
You don't think people from the U.S. have accents? Some of them are so thick, they can hardly understand each other. Ever hear (late bandleader) Lawrence Welk speak? Most people ask "what country was that guy born in" He was from North Dakota. Jesse Ventura is a pretty good example of Minnesota. Both of them have the long vowels, say Ya instead of yes a lot, and turn "thats" into "dats", etc.
I'd say that Americans have accents but they're weird accents, an indie developer that I know of recently watched a televised incident in which Jack Thomson and a bunch of supposed gaming celebs argued over whether Britain has a First Ammendment (no, really, I'm not making this up). He described the experience as if he were "listening to muppets and fraggles arguing at high-speed". Not verbatim but similar.
There, I've taken revenge for all the Americans that make fun of the Canadian/Scottish 'oot'-ness.
Anyway ...
When one refers to "eh", there's a problem there. Technically, both America and Britain/Canada enunciate it a lot. However, the pronounciation between nations seems to be different. In America, "Enh" is feared. Which is basically just like saying the letter N. In Britain, we tend to favour "Ehh", which is similar to saying the letter A.
I'd imagine that Canada uses the latter variation but I can't say for sure.
Bah, I never said Americans don't have accents. What I meant was that people who are engulfed in a certain way of speaking usually adopt it and become used to it, so when someone who speaks with the same 'accent' as you, you wouldn't notice they even had an accent.
That was a tad defensive, no?
Don't worry, I primarily used that as an excuse to rattle off the Fraggles versus Muppets anecdote, which I'm particularly fond of.
Hmm? No, I wasn't replying to your post, in fact, you ninja-ed me. :P I was replying to Rafe, I had only read your post after I made mine.

Bwahaha! I was wondering if you'd catch me saying that. Though I haven't been making fun of Eastern Canada, I've heard it used more often out east than west, even from my own family out there. I know that the accent and such changes even within eastern Canada though. I've heard a difference between Ontario and the maritime provinces. Still heard it occasionally in New Brunswick though.

You mean like people who go around calling themselves "vampyre"?
I think this thread needs more Chaucer. (http://houseoffame.blogspot.com/)
Vidar:
Yup. Them's the ones. Cheap plastic knock-offs of the real thing.
Gabi: AH. Yes, in that sense, faerie was first. I meant in the "oh, it's now popular to call it faery rather than fairy, because that's much wierder and cooler and neat and stuff, doesn't my hair look pretty, y'know" sort of way.
And, seriously speaking, "faerie" is the original. "Faery" is a god-awful mix of the two. "proper" english is fairy - being aware that english is a living language and hence mutable and changing and stuff, I'm aware that faery may well -become- correct, but that doesn't make it any better.
... and you damn kids can get off my lawn! :-)
That was a good example there, Vidar and it wasn't one that made me twitch. Not in the least, even remotely. Honest.
Hematophages should be called wampyr or vampires, not vampyres, what on Earth is a vampyre anyway? Good grief! ...wait, am I thinking out loud again? Dammit.
Also: Gabi, doesn't that say that the word 'fairy' evolved from the word fay/fae (not faerie or fairy)? In which case, fairy was the first instance of that particular word, which later mutated into faerie to keep track with the origin 'fae' rather than the first derivation 'fairy'?
Of course, that's just what I got from that page rather than actual knowledge, it's just how I read it. I'm likely wrong.
... and faery is horrible, yes.

Also, to add, I'm fond of the term 'fayfolk', too. Which is why there tends to be much gnashing of teeth whenever I see 'feyfolk' instead.
Everquest, I'm talking about you! *Waves fist.*
Is it just me who is tempted to post "feyfolk" all over the place to wind Rowne up? :-)
I wouldn't use the word "faery", it doesn't look right. But "faerie", I do use sometimes.
So Gabi, how do you say fairy in spanish?
Then we can all start saying that instead :P
"Differently inclined" ? "Alternative Lifestyle"? "Fond of Pink" ? "Male Hairdresser" ?
Oh, you mean fairy as in fae. Sorry, don't mind me. *evil giggle*

Ambers? You mean there's more than one?! :erk
I've got one myself. She's a real pain in the butt always trying to get into my bed.
Llearch, I will steal your umbrella and let the skies rain upon you! Then you'll be a sad, sad cardboard box.
Well, actually, you probably won't but I have to make some threat that's comical, harmless and non-commital after being taunted, now don't I?
Also: Hada is a nifty word. I like Hada.
I Hada Fairy Fay Breakfaest!
... I want to kill my own brain, now.

Well, you shouldn't have her sleep on the floor in the basement. Ambers are known to seek out nearby warm places when cold, regardless of whom they might inconvenience.

*sniff sniff*
Amber hates me

It's ok, I have a box full of spare umbrellas. Take as many as you like... :-)

Right-oh. Just open your ear, and I'll pour some gin and vermouth in, and add a twist...
... shaken, not stirred. :)
You do? Nowait. You can't trick me! I'm not looking in there.
And that pretty much doesn't work, I've tried. And that just sadly adds to the fact that whatever doesn't kill me can only serve to make me stranger.
.. And that which does kill you makes you dead. :-)
Well, until a naughty necromancer gets his grubby paws on your bits. Then it's something else entirely.

Well, that's what you get for making her sleep on a cold, hard concrete floor in an unheated basement. No amount of pink ribbons is going to make that right again. :U
Congrats Amber! :mowhappy
I have an Amber. It lives in my cupboard. And it tells me things.
I haven't slept in weeks.

Try with Swedish fish and maple syrup. :P
Looking forward to a regular DMFA again, good thing Amber is safe. :mowsmile At least one of the Ambers... :mowdizzy
Here is my Amber

She likes to play the bear trap
Here's my Amber. I've had her with me since 2001. On a kind of forum RPG.

Hee hee... I think those are soooo cool!
James: "That's 'cause you just took the base I made and created 'em all." (http://home.earthlink.net/~yinou/James%20....gif)
Eh heh... there's still some transparency issue with the whites of the eyes, but nobody'll notice if I don't tell them. Err, wait hold on.... dangit.
Ya, I can't really tell which ones have transparency issues on my monitor, but you've done more work on my smilies than I did. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/jaguarstarrunner/emotes/Jamesemotehappy.gif)
I could save people the trouble and fix them, I have toooools
That would be splendid! I can't even tell which ones need fixing though...
*surprize hug from behind for the blue angel boy* EEeeeeee ^^
Easy way to tell: change the forum theme/skin to have a black background and post/preview a James smiley in a non-DMFA forum. Then, it becomes really obvious.
Observe:
I am perfectly capable of fixing them, just far too lazy. (Change the transparency to green or something instead of white... or just make the eyes a few shades off-white...)

Hee hee, I had
way too much fun making that one...
I'd take your Borg emoticon and raise you a Cybermen emoticon. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find one, which is a shame.
So I'll settle for this, instead ...
(http://forums.wireplay.co.uk/images/smilies/dalek.gif) EX-TER-MIN-ATE, EX-TER-MIN-ATE. AAACH! MY VI-SION IS IM-PAIRED! MY VI-SION IS IM-PAIRED! I CAN-NOT SEE!
*Charles bah!* Where's the Dalek's ray gun? And what about the Cult of Skarow? And that last Dalek that used an emergency temporal distortion to escape... and Davros, who got out on an escape pod just before the Hand on Omega hit the Dalek mother ship on the previous series with Sylvester McCoy? *is obessively keeping track of loose ends in the series* :mowhappy
The Sylvester McCoy series was wonderful, he made such a good Doctor. Primarily because he was grand with eccentricity, that man has about a billion facial expressions and he's able to enunciate. I've always been impressed with the things that McCoy can do with his voice. This is even more apparent in the radio/CD dramatizations.
As for the Dalek, it's an older form of Dalek. The Daleks have changed over the years. The first Daleks (which used to follow lines on the ground) are much different than the Daleks we've seen today in the Eccleston and Tennant era.
EX-TER-MATE! EX-TER-MATE! *rotates torso and uses death ray on punny humans*
I rember the genesis of the Daleks very well and Tom Baker Doctor was stuck in the biggest pickle
Wait, does this mean we can't blame Canada anymore?
You can never blame Canada! :evil
Well, you can blame the mounties but the rest of Canada is pretty much alright.
Unless of course Dan takes up hockey.

I think, if anything, we can blame Canadia for more now! Everything we could blame Amber with now goes onto the blame of Canadia!
And if something goes wrong, she is in Canadia, therefore it's Canadias fault! :D
