Discussion of creatively placed speech bubbles below.
Abel and manboobs just don't mix well. X3
<Ink> Strategically placed speech balloon.
<Ink> "Modify your body mass."
<Kat> Yes, true to life man boobs
<Ink> Xze will probably go draw femmeBel.
<Ink> I'm sticking to male, with skirt.
<Kat> All preference, ah spose. Xze does seem to like some of that genderbendification
<Ink> You know, for someone who enjoys the presence of many women in taverns, and Amazons; he is surprisingly-- sensitive.
<Kat> Well, they -are- manboobs. On Abel, afterall
O_O Gah! my eyeeesss! it burrrrnsss X_X xD
By the way, this random reference to Belgian surrealism was brought to you by Orbit Gum. For that Fresh, Clean, feeling. Do carry on.
ZOMG, "u" in color! D:
No, wait, that's not what I noticed first. :sweatdrop
Not to nitpick or anything, but it seems that Abel failed to remember to shift his facial features into something more feminine. Which would further explain why Dan is all "MEIN EYEZ! ZEY BURN!".
In other news, bewbs.
I don't think any of the guys are going to comment on this, but I like his (her?) hair. ^^ Blue is good.
Ya gotta have blue hair.

Scarred for life is accurate...

That, and the resulting chaos if people think about the Belgian surrealism too much.
Took me a while to get this one - but, then, I don't have Dan's point of view.

I really don't get why Dan always complains so much whenever there are breasts around. I mean yes, in this case I get it, but it's not that bad. It's still BOOBS! I'm reminded of a quote I once heard...
Quote from: Drake Fenwick
They're breasts. I don't need to explain why I drew them on a rhinoceros.

I think that's the really frightening part , so did I ;_;
And I think the reason Dan is so scarred is because he witnessed the actual transformation...
Hey, I dig the hair as well. True, it's not the first thing I noticed but hey.
Also, I Imagine porn being drawn of this (no, not by me) in three... two....
You know, Abel's comment about body mass modding made me think he made himself look more buff. But then the speech bubbles gave me the impression that he gave himself femmeboobs. And then back with the Dan comment, which now has me completely confused. :U Did Abel give himself manboobs or femmeboobs? Which is it?!
On a different note, Abel changing his hair to blue reminds me of both a snow cone and an ice cream cone. And that I asked someone to fire tranq darts at random people in this thread in secret, but I just told you. OH SNAP.
...:P
My soul is bleeding. Not from the man-boobs, mind you. From that blue hair. It clashes violently with Abel's fur color.

*Charline nods* Yes, the physiology is simply too complex to replicate even with careful training. Now the other way around, that's pretty much just simple tubing and accessories, a bit of rearranging what's already there. It's easy to simulate the effect closely enough to fool most victims. Why, plastic surgeons do that kind of thing all the time these days. Naturally, we cubi can do it even more easily, and without scarring.

Censoring things on purpose, or just revealing a little something lets the readers minds wander to all kinds of perverted places. It's a great imagination trick to play. A lot of brilliant cartoons use it -
Rocko's Modern Life for instance:
That was from the nudist party sequence in the episode "Bedfellows", where every time you thought you were going to see something naughty, something would get in the way, like the two arrows there.

This is the principle by which frilly nighties and bikinis are teh sexay moreso than nekkidness.
To paraphrase somehting I probably read somewhere, the strategically placed clothing adds an element of mystery that can be used to spark the imagination and greatly increase the alure above and beyond that of the naked form.
I expect it's something akin to the difference between anatomical charts featuring naked people and images with a more graphic pose.
Heh, strangely enough, Abel is actually cuter like this, blue hair and all.

In actuality though, all Dan needs to do is hide his backwings and change his mass around a wee bit. Hair can be dyed rather quickly.
He's just gotta fill out the dress in a feminine way, seeing as he already gets mistaken for a girl

Urrrr... I totally missed it on first read.
Anyway, as I believe I mentioned, Dan can do a passable job without magic. All he really needs to learn from Abel is hiding his backwings, which appears to be pretty easy if the headwings are anything to go by. Pretty much everything else can be done with fur dye and rolled-up towels or something.
I can't blame dan for being horrified... a person with a male face and boobs does sound weird
and even if to learn that he usually needs month, Dan can do it, like, master Kame claims he needed 50 years to learn the Kame-Hame-Ha while both Goku and Kiririn learned in the first try :mowdan
besides... if things go critical, Jy could likely be able to fo an Alexsi patch in a snap

Hmmm... So you're saying that if you look at the last panel with Abel seen from the side in it, his chest always jutted out from his collarbone the way it does there? :p
I'm starting to think Abel will be the one being Alexsi and Dan will end up being Merlitz. :laugh
Which, if you think about it, is fairly logical. Dan has known Merl for longer, and is not as experienced as Abel at shapeshifting. Method to the madness? Perhaps.
Dan only has to change colouration, reshape body mass a -little- (unlike Abel's ample demonstration) and hide all wings. Simple enough, compared to what Abel listed off. It's still three out of three, but I don't think Dan will have any problem with wings (seeing as he did once make them into Pac-Men) and minor body-mass modifications should be simple enough. Otherwise, the only problem is changing hair & fur colour. :P
On another note;
The fanbois will go wild.

I'd argue that Dan has known his own sister before having met Merlitz (and that Abel had met Merlitz before Alexsi). ;)
However, the shapeshifting part would be true. On the other hand, Abel would have trouble actually playing Alexsi's part. He has proven to be a bit out of touch with quite a few non-SAIA concepts (like digicams and beings in general)...
Well, I figured out what was going on with Abel in the first read-through. Then again, I also read El Goonish Shive, so it wasn't hard to figure that out. :)
The changing sequences are interesting, especially seeing Abel's hair mid-change. The wings... not much to say about them. Not much going on there. And the... body-mass redistribution... poor Dan.
And I'm not sure who would end up masquerading as who. Abel doesn't know either of them well at all.

Indeed. There are a number of snags. Dan and Alexsi are both the same (leonine) species and fur colour, Merlitz is some kind of tiger/cheetah hybrid and structually different. To become Merlitz Dan would have to hide his wings, replicate the base fur colour and patterning, change the shape of his skull, tail and so forth. Whereas to become Alexsi he simply has to dye his hair, hide his wings and shove something down his front.
And as you mention, Abel is 375 years or so behind the times and has met Alexsi twice. He also doesn't know where anything is in the inn - Dan has covered running it for Alexsi on at least once occasion (#31). Alexsi will be doing all the talking - Merlitz just has to stay quiet and speak when he's spoken to.

EDIT: also it occurs to me that danielle allready knows how to ajust his body mass, based on his earlier encounter with Biggs.
A patch would be too simple, and logical. No, there must be some other method... Normally I'd predict that Dan is an exceptional learner and can gain the necessary abilities in minutes, but that doesn't seem frightening enough to fit... Hmm...

It would also be very Mary-Sue-ish. If you understand what that term means. ;)

I expect it's something akin to the difference between anatomical charts featuring naked people and images with a more graphic pose.
The anatomical charts in our high school biology books were in *very* graphic poses. There was much staring and drooling. :laugh
As long as they didn't include a 'How to...' :P :rolleyes
Poor Dan. >:3
And I like Ambers approach with the speech-bubbles.
Leaving some things to ones imagination is a good thing - In retrospect, maybe not for most of us nut cases. :laugh

Depends what you mean sir
Abel doesn't make that bad of a woman.
Dan doesn't need to change his body mass to pass off as a woman. He seems to make a pretty good one with a little bra stuffing, at least according to Biggs. XD Also, I think Abel's face looks fine for a female. He's pretty to begin with.
I dunno, I think Abel looks fairly tomboyish and freckly right now. It's probably just the combination of fringe and spotty markings though.
Cute-ish, but not the sort of person you'd want to grope because they'd probably kick you where it counts. And not just because Abel is really a guy under all that. (Or is he? We never really got to see because Fa`Lina interrupted!)
Tomboyish and freckly is cute though. :P
I liked Abel's hair. Mostly because it's a trait that I'd share with him. Blue is a wonderful colour, one of many wonderful colours and DMFA features all the colours of the 'bow.
... what?
On a completely unrelated note, hurrah for Amber using the Queen's English.
As far as the breasts are concerned, my reaction would've been as follows: "You can use magic to create fake knockers? That's a nifty trick. Great at parties. But the real question is; can you make balloon animals out of them?"

Does
true seeing show the true original form when the body has been physically changed (rather than using illusions)? If so, that would make the
true sight an illusion overlaying the actual current form.

Do you mean making balloon animals out of magic, or making balloon animals out of magically-crafted jigglies? Because either would have vast entertainment value.
On a side note, the hair really is a cool shade of blue.

*ponders* Hey... couldn't they just use the Warp-Aci to bring Alexsi back in an instant? Not that it'd be remotely insane enough for this comic...
Not really because warp-aci needs activation time, and there're likely guards.
What would be more ackward though, is if Destinia or Edward were to make a impromptu visit during the inspection, and recognise Abel and/or Pyroduck in the process. (no matter how they decide to disguise themselves as Alexsi and Merlitz, it's gonna turn out ackward..)
I'm not sure of how Warp-Aci work but wouldn't Fi need to know where to go? So you don't end up 5 meters above ground or inside someone's house or something? :S

It would seem so, because Fi had to be snailmailed, disguised as a letter, to Dan's house in order to drag him back to SAIA.
At this point in time the laught riot continues :laugh :laugh. Anywho I think the only way that Dan will go back to train is that he is not going back..................

True seeing does see through alteration magic in addition to illusion. It also sees werewolves for what they are no matter what form they're currently in.
It's not that it creates an illusion overlaying the actual current form, though -- it lets you see *reality* as unaltered by ongoing magic. What non-instantaneous magic does isn't exactly real.

Comic archives + age-old discussion threads + a few explanation snippets from Amber + wild extrapolation + guessing

Not to mention try to understand the working minds of Amber

Is this 'True Seeing' business something that's been discussed in the context of DMFA before, or are people just taking the D&D spell (which I know very little about) and assuming that DMFA has it too?

No, neither?
Someone started talking about 'Alter Self', which is a D+D spell that does sort of the same thing that Abel just did.
Mmm...mebbe we should have a sticky about all this background information. I've never played D&D myself.
It's not really background info. These threads tend to dig waaaay deeply into the storyline. Doubly so for Abel's Story.

well to me it sounds like genetic resequencing but on a cosmetic level. i wonder if amber watched the season finial of Get Ed.
Magic is powered by a secret sect of Viking Lawn Gnomes who continually divide by zero on TI-83 graphing calculators. This creates mini space-time continuum vortexes in which magical power is created, and is then funneled throughout the world for use by magical users. There is always a slightly overweight Scot monitoring the Big Glowey Tube™ at the HMF (Happy Magic Factory) to ensure that there are no hiccups in the system.

my guess is they use magic like that in the anime Slayers. No limit baby, yea, raw unlimited power to destroy all creation at their fingertips.
i need to call for information :choco i'm sorry but your too late. that data is mine :magus1 haha come try to make sense of the program now :megagroove oops i think i oped the wrong file.
I'm in favor of the much-unused idea that magic has a mind of it's own, and must be coaxed into something. Too bad the green glow in Abel's hands doesn't appear to support it.... Unless the magic has a cruel sense of humor and is liking Dan's reaction...
And doesn't Slayers magic backfire sometimes?
what are the slayers that you speak of? i've never seen it.,
meh, the only times the magic in Slayers has backfired was; A: When it was magic of a specialized school cast by someone unspecialized in it, aka Syphiel using Flame Arrow; and B: When two spells of opposite elements collide, aka Flame Arrow against Freeze Arrow.
Slayers is an anime made a while back about the adventures of Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev and their continuing quests for gold, food, and monster stomping.
