Title: 20/07/09 [PF #72] - That's a clever trick
Post by: Jairus on July 20, 2009, 05:11:17 PM
Actually, that really is a neat idea, Tape. And poor Joshua is not having a good day: I love him just peaking out from behind Jakob. Also, neat trick with the shadow on panel 6.

Um... what's with the FPS interface at the bottom of panel 2?

That's a random idea of mine. I suggested adding Doom 1/2 HUD there. :B

It was very difficult to execute in a convincing way.  I'm still not sure I've pulled it off.

You'll have to ask Ren why it's there, but this is it:

It never occurred to me that someone might not have played the game which launched the PC and ended the 16-bit era, but if not, you may find this handy:

You're talking to a guy whose first video game was played on a Nintendo 64, and his second on a GameBoy Color. Before Anthrocon, I had never even seen a Super Nintendo in person. And my first PC game was some game that allowed you to play through Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, and Around the World In 80 Days and you had this art kit to get the characters through the story (I've forgotten it's name). In short, I've never played Doom. The best I've seen is a handful of snippets in various video game reviews, usually comparing terrible games to Doom to illustrate some point or another. So, yeah, I'd not be able to recognize it.

Bweeheeheee!

_love_ the Doom HUD. Only objection is it's totally unbelievable that he'd a) have a backpack (because we can see he doesn't), and b) have 800 ammo for the pulse rifle, whilst actually having a pulse rifle... and not cheating.

And he doesn't have a BFG. What a shame... ;-]

(... This kinda suggests I played too much Doom when I was younger, doesn't it?)

Well, to be fair I didn't want to rip the game art off directly.  The whole thing is drawn from scratch, though I did overlay the original design on it.  This is why it has UK spelling, and why the weapon names are different (the original says 'cell' not 'batt').  Imagine he's running some kind of dehacked patch.

Fun fact... my brother once made a custom WAD for Doom that was intended to allow one to cheat in Deathmatch.  As far as I know it never saw service but it was a clever proof-of-concept.
Firstly, it set the colour palette to be 100% bright all the time, so there were no dark spots and you could always see with total visibility.
Secondly, and more cleverly, he removed the red-out effect when you took damage and assigned the red flare to one single colour that was not used much.  This allowed you to see with perfect clarity when you were having the shit kicked out of you.
The clever part was that he made a custom HUD which had a red orb located on it.  This orb was painted that one special colour, so that the orb on the HUD would flash red or green when you were being damaged or being poisoned.

Quote(... This kinda suggests I played too much Doom when I was younger, doesn't it?)
There is no such thing as "playing too much Doom"...

I disagree. I've heard of a guy who died after playing for 26 straight hours.

As for me, just starting the game would be playing too much. I've never liked that kind of games (worst of them was Wolfenstein, which literally made me sick just by watching my brother play it - dizziness and nausea included).

Anyway, didn't Joshua's shirt have 4 different clan marks? And when will he get a break? The poor guy is always scared. :<

Okay, that's true.

It did, though Dorcan immediately focussed on the one which was harmful to him.  It would be reasonably safe to assume that the others were allies of the Rhu'Hahn...

As for Joshua getting a break, he will.  Just not yet.  But we are trying to cut down on the D-face, hence there will be a few minor tweaks from the original script.

Ah, right, you want the decals from Joshua's shirt?  I assumed you were thinking of one with your own clan marks or something.

EDIT:

The lines are a bit crappy at this scale, but here you go:

Well, of course. And he's already got a Doom BFG. I mean, Jakob only has the world's largest collection of BFG's, including a Gianni original, stored in a secret room accessed from the hidden door behind the bookshelf in his room by pulling down on the book titled "A Complete History of Hicksville Tennessee." Didn't you know that?

It wasn't the primary purpose, and it is possible to take these things too far, but yeah - there are cosmetic advantages to the process.

True the original purpose is noble in intentions but there are those that will abuse noble intentions for vanity or worse.

Very much so.  He might consider a sex change to be an improvement.  [Damn, llearch got there first].  I'm sure he complimented someone by saying he wished she was a guy, but I can't find it offhand.

With luck we'll be updating the backstory tomorrow evening, though it'll be a near thing.  The main comic looks like it will update late Saturday or Sunday, that's still up in the air.

Depends if Ren comes back by then.  If he's able to get online at work but not at home it won't make things much better as I'm not sure he's able to send things from work like that.  Also it might take longer than Monday to colour it, being a workday after all.
