Title: 05/10/09 [DMFA #1000] - Cyra's intro
Post by: Baal Hadad on May 10, 2009, 02:28:48 AM
Oh my gosh....   :erk

I actually had a premonition that this would be the 1000th page--and then I checked the site and I was right!

EDIT: But am I honored to be starting the thread for the 1000th page!  :D

Whoa.

And here I was expecting something like this strip for Sabrina Online's 500th (http://www.sabrina-online.com/strips/SabOnline500.JPG).

Very nice work there, Amber.

Any chance of a hi-res version of this being available? Just out of interest...

Also, congrats on the visa extension.

It seems that given that introduction all Dan can do is channel Keanu Reeves.

Edit: And oh, in yesterday's strip in the middle with Regina, she has the look and smugness to pull of a classic villain.

I'm hoping that she's only that big to make an impression on Dan through the dream. Cause otherwise.... CYRA=GODZILLA. Seriously though. Hell of an entrance.

The artwork is beautiful.  Amber calls it an eye candy cop-out, I call it awesome and very appropriately epic looking.  Though I hope in the next comic she scales down to match his size... She might be a little too intimidating for Dan to handle otherwise XD  But if I had the power I'd probably go with the attention grabbing, epic intro too >_> <_<

She looks really caring there.  Which seems a little odd for the leader of a clan with their particular affinity, but then, as the leader of the clan I suppose there's kind of a motherly bond there.  She's probably hoping to get him to accept his cubi-ness so he can protect himself.  I could be completely off, but it seems to me that the clan founders have a link to their clan members, and she can probably feel the pain he was in during his battle.  It would probably be hard to be able to sense that your 'children' are in pain like that.  Either way I can't wait to see more of her.  She looks like a goddess there.  ...I wonder if she'll get a cast page...

Nice introduction, Dan certainly seems to be somewhat impressed/surprised himself. I wonder if he knows that she is really ``there'' and aware that she's in his dream or if he is unaware/thinks it's just a regular dream. Congratulations on the 1000 strips as well! I'm certainly looking forward to the next 1000.

Hmm good point I wonder if the placement moves according to ones role in the clan,
on the chest: Founder
arm: Warrior
Back: Magician? Troublemaker?
Arm: assassin?

Its mostly inference that Fa'lina is a clan founder. Of course, she may not have been originally, and later became one for... herself, and it may well be she isn't one at all. We DO know she has those dragon head things, though, which indicate that her clan's founder is still alive, which probably means it is her (either that, or she is simply so powerful she can ignore that restriction). See: this comic (http://"http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_493.php") and the next one, where she manifests the dragon head things.

She doesn't have a third set of wings which are visible... but that doesn't necessarily mean she lacks them, given that cubi are shapeshifters and can hide their wings easily. Why she would, however, is another question.

I wonder what Abel is doing. My guess rushing to Dan's room to warn him of Cyra's presence. But it's too late for that.

What Dan will do next is rather a mystery depending on what he's thinking and what he realized.

Three wings doesn't mean the 'cubi is a founder.  It just means that that 'cubi is super-powerful and should not be messed with!

Why should he be worried about Cyra coming to visit Dan?  Shouldn't the Clan Founder have his/her members' best interest in mind?  Depending on Abel's relation to the Cyra clan, and Cyra herself, he would either be greeting her warmly or shivering under the nearest bed.

A thought just occurred to me: What if Fi growing big was an indicator of Cyra visiting Dan?  It's a thought.

And congrats, Amber, for the 1000th comic.  Here's hoping that your inbox isn't flooded by too many "Happy 1000th!"

Ruritania.

It comes with an outline too when you download it, so it's easy to convert into glowing text, barring just duplicate/rasterizing it and doing Gaussian blur. It's a nice effect on the comic, nevertheless.

Um...hello. I typically just lurk in this part of the forum, but this is so worth it.

To be quite frank, I had few or no preconceptions about what Cyra would look like. Then again, I'm not familiar with the wiki, either. One way or the other, though, I hadn't expected her to look quite so much like Destania. Granted, they are related, but after a number of generations I'd expect the familial resemblance to have faded somewhat. Then again, maybe Cyra isn't as distant a relative as I'd previously assumed. Given the long lifespan of the 'Cubi, especially the powerful ones, might it be possible that Destania was one of Cyra's more immediate descendants?

All half-baked guesses aside, big congratulations are in order for Amber. Not only is this her 1000th strip, I think it's some of her best comic artwork to date in terms of the depiction of an individual character. Cyra looks graceful, ethereal, and awesome in the classic sense of the word. Let's hope that Mr. Diplomacy there doesn't give her a reason to show him her claws. If he handles himself right this could be very good for him.

On a more whimsical note, I've been trying to figure out what kind of soundtrack and/or sound effects Cyra is probably using in her entrance. A facetious part of my mind keeps throwing in a subtle rendition of When You Wish Upon a Star.

Aniz says nothing to imply Fa'Lina is a founder.
She failed to save her own clan the same way Aniz failed to save his own clan.

I always thought that Fa'Lina was always a powerful member of her clan and simply remained as one of the last surviving member of her clan.
That what became of her founder is unknown. Perhaps he/she is dead, perhaps mentally and phyically crippled, or perhaps the only other surviving member.

I would like to think that Fa'Lina will someday get her own third wings and then start her own clan.

The style in which Cyra makes her introduction is typical for either powerful, graceful, beautifully, savior or holy(blessing or solution) characters. If you see thees characters they usually at first appear huge, colorful, bright and make it seem like they are coming out of heaven.

Note: Did anyone notice that she hasn't got pupils? Her eyes are pure white.

Clues that Falina is a founder both can be found in this comic http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_730.php

Tentacle heads and obsession with Babies (perhaps because founders are sterile and cant have their own children) and she adopted Pyroduck another indication of sterility.

Other clues she is powerful enough to be a founder: She started SAIA, how else would someone convince multiple clans to send their children to her school unless the Cubi was powerful enough to keep even cubi with clan founders under control

That's why you did not see it, where Amber hid it in plain sight.  :mowwink
You can find it on her warp arcis (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Ab_006.php) and beneath her office window (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_424.php)

While it is indeed a good font I have a little trouble reading it. Does she say 'hello Darid'?

I thought Cyra had messed up and called him "David" at first  :P

This looks like it should be an interesting conversation.  Given that Dan knows practically zip about his clan, I hope Cyra is a patient woman/goddess.  I can imagine his next question will be something like "Who are you and how did you get in my dream?" or "You seem to have wings coming out of your butt.  How do you sit down?"

I wonder how hands-on Founders usually are in their approach to their children?  I had imagined that Cyra was barely aware of Dan's existence, let alone that she had been actually been observing him.
Given the Cyra propensity for terrifying Beings and sucking out their souls, I hope she's cool with the fact that Dan's goals are to defend and protect Beings instead.  Otherwise their "friendship" is going to be a very, very short one.

A lot depends on whether he thinks she's real.  If I believed it was a lucid dream, I'd probably react very strangely (think "anti-walkthrough" strangely) .

Perhaps.  It would have to be done slowly and gently, though.  Dan was convinced Fa'Lina and Abel wanted to turn him into a monster so clan leader or no (and he may or may not have twigged that) he's unlikely to trust her, especially after having heard of his mother's crimes.

Interesting thoughts:
Dan may ask her about Destania's past
Cyra may be using Fi as some kind of transceiver node to get into Dan.

Why should he be worried about Cyra coming to visit Dan?  Shouldn't the Clan Founder have his/her members' best interest in mind?  Depending on Abel's relation to the Cyra clan, and Cyra herself, he would either be greeting her warmly or shivering under the nearest bed.
That, of course, assumes that Abel's even aware of Cyra's presence.  If Cyra's that powerful, don't you think she'd be able to communicate with one of her scions without making her presence known to anyone else?

**EDIT**

As for the clan mark locations, Fa'Lina's is supposed to be on her hip from what I've heard, and here's another tri-wing with no central mark:

...it may be that the one in Cyra and Siar's is an copy, an affectation for formal reasons rather than her actual main clanmark.

I think the over sized warp-aci is a pretty big indicator of something strange so Abel might not know exactly what is happening but he is most likely heading to Dan's room to check up if anything. Also I think cubi can sense other cubi whit strong auras, as Aaryanna implied page 499. Her exact words were "Fa'lina was here?! She actually left the academy?! I can't believe I didn't sence her!". So if a tri-wing was here (physically or mantaly) her aura would be strong and Abel would most likely sens it.

Also Great job Amber

Most likely.  He is part of the Clan's future, after all.  However, that doesn't mean that they have to see eye-to-eye over everything.  Dan may not like her methods, she may feel that Dan's "protect-the-Beings" thing is a symptom of his immaturity.

And like I say, how Dan reacts depends on whether he believes she is real and not a hallucination.
Ever see Red Dwarf?  In one episode, holographic Rimmer travels back in time to try and help his former self.  Flesh-and-blood Rimmer writes himself off as a mushroom trip, and Dan may do the same.
It doesn't matter how benign her intentions are towards Dan if he thinks her Holy Vision is some kind of trip and ignores it all.

First of, if I know Dan he will either come whit a fast non taught trough comment or he will ignore what she said and hit on her, of course there is the rare thinking Dan who might actually try to be a bit strategic in his comments. And second, yes I saw that episode but if I remember it didn't work out too well whit 3 Rimmers, 2 Lesters and a lot of confusion.

Methinks that, while it is certainly true Cyra is a clan founder and quite powerful, she is not lacking the cubi ego.  Seems a bit arrogant to me to come down upon Dan all, I am your god!  Also, am I the only one who sees a mischievous smirk instead of a gentle smile?  Maybe I'm crazy.

Cyra really looks like she is coming from heaven. I mean whit the white light above her, the white wings and that smiling face + those white Gothic stile leathers. For the leader of a clan who's main affinity is pain she seems rather anti-painful. It is possible that Cyra inherited the pain affinity from her former clan (before she became tri-wing and founded her own clan) and then passed it down the next generations, perhaps she is peaceful like Dan, perhaps she didn't know she was a cubi until her headwings came in like Dan, perhaps she had a childhood like Dan, which would explain her positive approach, I mean visiting Dan in a dream seems like it is important, if your a clan founder you don't have the time to contact every new cubi to the clan, there has got to be a higher purpose to this, you don't waste time and power to visit or contact someone just to say hi.

Her smile is pretty much symmetrical.  It's just that her head is tilted slightly.  I imagine she's enjoying herself, though.

"It is good to finally meet you."  suggests Cyra has known about Dan for some time, and she does know his full first name.   I wonder how much and for how long, though.

Dan is the newest member of her clan, and a large clan tops out at about eighty members.  And the Cubi birthrate is low, which is to be expected of a race that lives thousands of years.  And he just nearly got himself killed.  Justification enough for this visitation, though there certainly could be other reasons.

I thought Cyra had messed up and called him "David" at first  :P
It was "Bello David" for me, which would imply  an italian cubi trying to seduce him  :U

Suddenly thought of a question, when a cubi couple has a kid, whose clan does the offspring belong to?

Do you mean if the parents are from different clans?

You're right. When Cubi from different clans reproduce, the result will be born to the most powerful clan.

Totally blown away by today's comic, congrats to Amber for an awesome 1000th comic!!

Can't wait to see where this is heading.  And Dan?  Mind your manners, Cyra might not be as tolerant with rudeness as Fa'lina is!

I think Dan's "...WOAH" says it all. Cyra's dressed a bit like an amazon -- I'm sure Dan appreciates it.  :mowhappy  I'm thinking Cyra will shrink down, laugh, then ask Dan if he liked her dramatic entrance.

Awesome - and I agree - this needs to be a desktop. Happy 1000th Amber!

One of the virtues of such an awesome entrance is, Dan's going to be too impressed to be rude, for a while.   And Cyra's friendly self introduction helps in that regard as well.

Depends what she wants.  If we take Fa'Lina's line to Abel as gospel, the deeds of her clan are one of the main reasons 'Cubi have such a bad name among Beings and other Creatures.  That doesn't really speak well for her.

Now maybe she just wants to help him because she loves all her children, no matter that he wants to go around protecting people instead of gutting them.

Maybe she's even realised that what they've been doing in the past isn't sustainable as a way of living and wants to turn the clan around.  Rebrand it, so to speak.  In that case, Dan could be the first of a 'new breed of 'Cubi' who actively defend Beings from other Creatures.  That would certainly make Dan happy, but to be honest, I'm not hopeful.

I guess we'll find out, hopefully.

Taking care of her own seems the most likely motive, given her friendly greeting.  Or else she's a  Chessmaster (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheChessmaster), and is doing the friendly hello to disarm Dan's wariness, so he'll be easier  to "guide".

It would be nice if she sees in Dan a chance to shift her clan in a more sustainable direction.

If you think about it, Cyra Clan Cubi could do well in dentistry and medicine.  People in pain come to you, and you get to feed on their pain while helping them.  Just as that Siar Cubi was shown comforting the bereaved, while eating their misery.

I guess that's what I get for not memorizing all the character names mentioned in the comic. The use of fonts like this is a pet peeve of mine, though.

She won't be able to say much like that.  Either she's going to talk very slowly (making Dan fall asleep in his dream a'la 508, or wake up or something) or else she's going to switch to a more normal mode of speech so that we get more than five words every panel  :P

That was...More then I expected for the 1000th strip! I love it. :mowhappy

And I feel that I must point this out:
http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_508.php (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_508.php) In 508, check the symbol Above Fa'lina's head.
Now compare it to the symbol of Tzeentch: http://benfactor.info/about/Tzeentch_mark.png (http://benfactor.info/about/Tzeentch_mark.png)

Turn and flip Fa'lina's symbol, and it is remarkably like that of Tzeentch...

Except that's not Fa'Lina's clan marking (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_421.php), and I don't think Amber is going around sticking references to Warhammer in her comic... It would be funny if it were actually related, though.

You know, the fact she smiles and is helpful says nothing. One may smile and smile and be a villain.

That said, Fa'lina still has dragon-heads in 508, and as last survivor of a clan that leaves little option left.

None of them are in the strip archives.

Well that's a relieft :)  I was able to find the page for our flowery friend, but think I've looked through all the stuff on the non archive pages and couldn't find a 3rd or more.  Obviously I've missed something :)

They aren't all readily visible... Perhaps the hint is what is not said, rather than what is. After all, we know that after the end, there will be nothing more.

Can somebody confirm this more authoritatively.  I was going crazy trying to find 4 and 5.  I was starting to look through Javascript code for onclick statements.

He would do something like that, if it amused him.

But there is an easy "backdoor" way of finding the secrets. You'll kick yourself when you figure it out.

I have found a grand total of 3 hidden pages. If there are two more in addition to that, well, I've searched every way I could think of. So if two more exist, they're very well hidden

...Well, that explains something that has to do with someone on the public cast page and another public cast page's member's reaction to that something.

Just 3, but I've received a PM that says that there's at least a fourth... Or that I didn't read the page I refered to in the post you quoted very thoroughly.

There are pages where clicking on a link does not direct the user to the expected page.  For example, many of the cast and Demonology have a link at the bottom saying "Back to Top".  Now, in some cases, clicking on this link takes you to the top of the wrong page.  (Try the first two secret pages.)  I wouldn't call the linked page a "secret" page because it can be reached from the index page for the cast.

Edit:

I agree that they are cut and paste bugs.  I'm just wondering if some of these pages with strange behavior could be what some people think are "secret" pages.

By the way, there was another page with such a bug that I encountered last week, but that one is fixed now.

I found one by accident. The other two were pretty obvious "huh, wonder what this does". The three next to that, required digging.
