Looks like Jakob's memory alteration didn't work out as well as it should have. I mean what if the guard goes to confirm who was supposed to be at the castle today?

I didn't think memory alteration was even going to show up. Not that it would seem impossible in a world of magic, but if reading a mind is dangerous, than re-writing a mind's contents can be crazy-difficult. Then again maybe what Jakob did was closer to a temporary spell that merely masks the real memory and creates an alternate for only a few minutes or so, before fading away and leaving little to no permanent side effects.

Then again I may be missing some changes this DMFA-related universe has, and memory alteration is a regular skill.

Mind-control has come up a couple of times.  Abel pretended he was doing it to Jyrras, and supposedly Devin kicked the ass of an Angel who used an enchanted necklace to control an actress or something.

What Jakob is doing here is a bit more akin to hypnosis, though - and in any case it only has to last long enough for them to get in, get what they need and get out.
