It seems to me this is just part of the process of turning Abel into a instrument of destruction against his father. He's no good for then when permanently mopey. As one cyborg noted "Anger is more useful than despair". Current Abel, although not exactly battle ready would stand a better chance than he did when he first arrived. Not doubt the process would have continued if Blue had not left SAIA.
