I loved the first one, but it was fiddly to make work.  I'll have to see if I can get it to go in DOSbox again.  There were two versions, disk and CD.  The CD version was filled with voicing and had a CD audio score.  One of the cool things was a gramophone, which had about three disks.  I remember lugging the thing around the game just so I could hear 'Dance of Death' on demand.

It was rather hard, though - there was a limited amount of ammo and you could lose it easily if you fell in the water.  IIRC I used a hex editor to increase the amount of ammo (my brother described this as 'loading the gun, how dice are loaded').
Oh, one of the funniest moments was when I set him up to have 32767 health points.  Remember this is a 16-bit game - so I have him a health potion.  He drank it, said 'aah....' and then let out a piercing scream as the game realised he had something like -32757 health points.

Some time ago, I found a copy of Alone In The Dark 3 in a remaindered bookstore.  Supposedly one part of the game involved being turned into a cougar, which I thought was a really cool idea.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the game to work reliably.

I'm playing the first one right now, and there are these two demons at the staircase. I can't seem to kill them. They just sit there and only react when i attack.

If you are carrying some mirrors they will smash them.  This might be a clue, although if you've saved after the mirrors have been shattered, you may have to restart the game.

I managed to get past them, but a bathtub monster ate me.

Whoops.

Oh, the Nasty Bath Monster.  I loved that.  IIRC you can shoot it.
Dammit, Danny - stop making me nostalgic for old DOS games or I'll never get the Oblivion anti-walkthrough written  :3
