Because they are really fighting over a misplaced comment by Dan, dealing with politics and came off the wrong way, namely, he mistakenly came off as rude. Like any other civilized creatures of differing species, they decided to resolve their differences in all out bloodshed.

If it's the SAIA librarian, maybe she found out that Dan didn't return the book he borrowed on time.  I understand that some librarians get very angry about overdue books.
