For future reference, the actual dates can be determined by clicking on the "Calendar" icon at the top of the page.  Of course, by sending the greeting early, you avoid sending it late.

This seems to be what would commonly online be referred to as 'jumping the gun' where by someone, who wants to feel special by starting a thread alot of people will take part it, posts it early. This is frequently seen with threads about comic updates. In this case though I'm wondering if Ted knows that the red named person is Amber. If he doesn't then I appologize, if he does then a pox upon him for trying to jump the gun on a thread that hundreds of us have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to post so as to lavish our favourite artist with well wishes.

I'm pretty sure Ted knows who he's talking about.

Nyet.

tar is "tape archive" - basically collates a pile of files into a single file, without compression.
gzip is file compression - compresses a single file.

winzip does -both- of these in one move. It just doesn't do -either- of them as well as tar and gzip do their parts. It also means you can't replace the compression utility with a different one, should your requirements change. Like, say, rar, or bzip2, or compress, or uuencode, or mimencode, or...

Yeah. I'll leave it at that.

Oh, and Tapewolf? The contents are a nice touch. Most amused. :-]

You're right.  I was thinking of zip instead of gzip.

However, uuencode isn't a compression scheme and actually results in a larger file.  What it does is eliminate bytes with values of 128 and greater so that the file isn't messed up by parity bits.

Somehow, I have this vision of a few dozen people sitting at their computers the night before the real birthday with a new topic ready to be entered with the depression of an enter key.  If eight people hit the enter key within a second of midnight, they will each think that they are first and will see all the topics suddenly appear.  Furthermore, what time zone should be used in entering the topic.  Perhaps one of the moderators should start the topic with a title like "Happy Real Birthday to Amber" an hour before midnight so that we don't have all the fastest enter keys on the web engaged in a no prisoners taken shoot-out.

you know on the 19th I think Amber will probably turn into a sloth...get up at around 11 or 10 o' clock feed her Keets (?) then sit on her butt for the rest of the day enjoying all sorts of junkfood and cake, lots and lots of cake.

Or she will blackmail us by saying "NO UPDATES UNTIL I GET A THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR MY BERFDAY" as a cruel joke...to molesternate our senses.

Do you have gzip and gunzip on your system?  You may have to run gunzip from the command line, which will create a file ted.tar.  Your system may then be able to handle the tar file.

wget http://www.jpmorris.force9.co.uk/stuff/ted.tar.gz
gunzip ted.tar.gz
tar xvf ted.tar

You may want to detar it in a separate directory, since Tapewolf makes one file extract into the current directory.

By the way, you might be interested in the file in my signature:

wget http://www.frontiernet.net/~superluser/googolplex.gz57
gunzip googolplex.gz57

(repeat last step 56 more times) (Be careful, it's quite large)

Would you like a googolplex (gzipped 57 times)?
