Throw rocks at Todd Goldman!

B1nd1 says it all.  Todd used other people's ideas and art and is making money off of it.  Who is he?  He is the person who does all the boy-bashing, i.e. "boys are stupid, throw rocks at them!"
Get out of my mind, idea!  I already have an idea in here!
Don't you hate it when you have an idea, don't write it down, and forget it?

Ah.  I was wondering when this would get here.

My 2 cents:  Art theft is bad.

It should have happened to an artist who actually could use the exposure and not some hack like Dave Kelly.

I won't be participating in any boycott of Goldman's work, mainly because I never had any desire to see/buy his work, but I'll be with you in spirit.

Todd Goldman has ripped off many artists apart from Dave Kelly. Dave Kelly has just rised the biggest stink over it.

In all honesty, Todd Goldman could have come out of this with his dignity in tact, but chose not to. I have a hard time believing someone that can run a million dollar business would act like he has been acting towards this whole ordeal.
Sometimes, the internet can really end up being serious business.

I'm not sure that David and Goliath, Inc is a multimillion dollar business.  I'm looking into it.

Also: OWNED BY THE USPTO!

Also also looks like somebody else raised a stink.  Don't know about what or if they won.

Considering there's David and Goliath branches all over the world, I'm gonna assume it is.

There's been many people that have had issues with Todd Goldman. Roman Dirge has had issues with him for years now, and has sent had his attorney send him several cease and desist letters because one of Todd's characters bares a striking resemblance to one of Roman's.
Dave Kelly, however, has raised the BIGGEST stink. Because, unlike the other artists, Dave Kelly is aided by hundreds of bored Goons who's actions he probably wont  be held accountable for. Plus several highly popular web artist friends, who, in turn, have thousands of readers to spread the word around and send many an angry letter Todd's way.

I dunno.  Just Born are well known for their character Mike (usually seen with Ike in the candy aisle), and Marshmallow Peeps.  They truly are a multimillion dollar business (perhaps even a multibillion dollar business).  And as Kelly hasn't actually filed suit yet, I think Just Born beats him.

Uh, that's not at all what I'm saying here. I'm saying Dave Kelly has thrown the biggest fuss over this(getting hundreds of people to harrass and flame Todd, getting a ton of extremely popular webcomics to call attention to his plight, advertising it all over Keenspot, etc.). The other artists and companies have handled their cases quietly. And whereas Dave Kelly probably isn't the first person to publicly bitch about this, nor is he the most popular or famous, he's the one that's bitched the loudest.

... whether the "harass and flame" bit is intentional or unintentional, there are some serious asshats out there on his side. If it does get to court, both sides are going to look like muppets, unless Dave is -very- smart about how he disassociates himself from the fringe.

Welcome to the Internet, where everyone believes they can go wild, with no consequences. *sigh*

I second this opinion.  I'm not sure Dave Kelly is actually worth the amount of praise that gets heaped his way. Okay, Pete Abrams? Yes.  Howard Taylor? Yes.  Piro... well, when I don't want to smack him with a 2*4, yes.  Amber?  Well... we all saw how she handled praise from Graveyard Greg (e.g., not very well  :mowtongue ).

Dave Kelly just comes across as a hack...  That being said, I do, in some ways, feel sorry that his artwork was ripped by Todd Goldman. (whose name bares a striking resemblance to Tom Goodman, bonus geek points for the reference) However, I think there are better reasons to go after Todd Goldman than his ripping off Dave Kelly.

As bad as the flaming and harrassment is, Todd Goldman's response wasn't much better. If nothing it dug himself into a much deeper hole. Sending pornography to minors doesn't make you look too good, I hear.

As stated before, NO U may work on 4chan, but in courts of law, it doesn't stop you from looking like a muppet.

As to Kelly being a hack, perhaps so, but just because your work is no better than a Ziggy doesn't mean that you don't get the same protection that a comic out of the New Yorker would.

I'm....not defending them and what they're doing. I'm just saying Todd Goldman's decision to respond to all the flames by sending them pornography, apparently not even considering the person on the other end might be a minor, was proabably one of the stupidest things he could have done.

That's all. :V

Ahem. I believe I -did- say "both sides" :-]

And yes, not considering who the person on the other end of the email is, is a silly move on Todd's side - legally speaking, anyway.

I agree that plagiarism is wrong ,but I've used soft core porn as reference materials, and Batman Beyond and videogames...I never directly traced anything, and I don't intend on selling them, but that's how artists improve their art work.

I don't think that I ever suggested otherwise.

Many artists draw from photographic reference.  Many others don't.  The latter are often pretentious dicks.  This is not an argument that I want to get involved in.

Anyways, the issue is that when using photographic reference, you're supposed to say, ``I've got a pose that I'm trying to draw; let's see what photographic reference I can find to help me draw it correctly.''

Greg Land does it wrong.  He seems to think along the following lines:  ``I've got a panel with Susan Storm coming up.  Let's see if I can find a picture of a woman that looks like Susan Storm that I can trace.''  The reference that's available dictates what he draws, while it should be that he only seeks out reference for what he's already decided to draw.

Todd Goldman has people come to him with ideas, and he redraws them in his own style.  If he had an artistic bone in his body, that might make him a touch above Greg Land.
