Abel does have a point, in that it's going to be hard to keep a sunny disposition when one of the most powerful creatures in the world has marked you for death.  Plus he's from a misery clan.  Still, the visit from Jyrras is probably doing him more good than he knows.

I'm guessing the belt pit is more just one of those things that happened. People kept tossing aside belts they didn't like until it became a heap large enough to crash through the floor creating a pit.
