Sesame Street - Adults Only?

I just saw this fabulous review of the early Sesame Street episodes.  These have apparently now been released on DVD, but are marked Adults Only:

It's currently on Slashdot, but the core article is from the NYT and can be found here:
Sesame Street review

It might require a login, I can't remember.

And I quote:
"Snuffleupagus is visible only to Big Bird; since 1985, all the characters can see him, as Big Bird's old protestations that he was not hallucinating came to seem a little creepy, not to mention somewhat strained.
"As for Cookie Monster, he can be seen in the old-school episodes in his former inglorious incarnation: a blue, googly-eyed cookievore with a signature gobble ("om nom nom nom"). Originally designed by Jim Henson for use in commercials for General Foods International and Frito-Lay, Cookie Monster was never a righteous figure. His controversial conversion to a more diverse diet wouldn't come until 2005, and in the early seasons he comes across a Child's First Addict."

Yes.  Sesame Street jumped the shark when other people were able to see Snuffy.  Coincidentally, Snuffy Smith and Barney Google also jumped the shark when people could see Snuffy.

In my humble and honest opinion, people look into things like that just a bit too much.  Back when the show started, nothing was the same as today, including methods for a child's upbringing.  But at least it's evolved to today's standards.  I think it rather unnecessary--and not too funny--that people like to nitpick a child's show.

That and I can't help saying so as I grew up with it.   :rolleyes

#1203.2-Because the human race seems to be made up of overly-PC-sensitive people who can't mind their own business.

Seriously. If they don't want their kids watching it, fine. I have no problem with that. But holy Damaris, can't they think of anything better to do that get 40-year-old kids' shows M-rated? (Kids' shows from the 60's, not 40-yo's who think they're kids.)

Next, they're going to be saying that show's racist. I dunno how...it just seems like it's the next logical step.
Jeez I need to update this thing.

thegayhare

no see if it was racist they would just edit out the rascist parts like in fantasia

although thet doesn't work for song of the south but oh well

You mean like Oscar moving into an apartment, and Ernie and Bert no longer living together? :B

Also, come to think of it, I remember as episode from my own childhood which was actually talking about racism, and how it is bad.
There was this plotline of two of the human characters being friends and how some (unknown) people had a problem with it.
There was must assuredly a happy ending.

They already did a TV series about that.  It starred Tony Randall as Oscar's roommate.

Wait...are we talking about the same thing here?

I was talking about The Odd Couple which, as a TV series, starred Jack Klugman as Oscar Madison, a chronically dissheveled, messy and grouchy man who lives in an apartment with neat freak (and grouch) Felix Ungar.

(it turns out that OTG was not named after Oscar Madison, but still)

Well... then no.
Oscar the Grouch was forced to move into an apartment. Apparently living in a trashcan was giving kids the wrong message :\

:U Damn lamb-blasters ruining a good idea, watch in twenty years the sesame street characters will all be stupid like the teletubbies, and the shows that air today will be considered for adults... Elmo has an imagination, that's to dangerous. We don't want children to have imaginations. It makes them ask too many questions *GASP* A Big Bird befriended by a hairy Elephant, that is clearly a gay metaphore BURN IT!!!  Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy encourage beasteality!!! * someone protect the children before it's too late!

Seriously, how can parents who watched this as kids look at it now and think it's going to warp their children? Are they saying that they themselves are warped and horrible human beings? I mean they grew up ON THOSE VERY SAME FUCKING EPISODES!!! To say that it's corrupting our youth is to say that they themselves are already corrupt.
Once upon a time I actually posted here.

Sienna Maiu - M T

Perhaps that is what they are saying, do you not believe it to be so?

And in all fairness, the froufrou way the world is raising kids these days is making them of a diferent kind of child.

Netrogo

Yeah well, MY kids (whenever I end up with any) are getting raised the same way I did. Old school sesame street, then at ten years old I'm gonna sit 'em down and watch bloodsport with them like my dad did me.

This is precisely why our society is fucked. The Baby Boom generation went out and had a ridiculous amount of sex, took a retarded amount of drugs, then got real jobs and decided that everything THEY did is bad for everyone else. Now everything's got to be safe, healthy, PC, and clean in order for it to be any good and have any value, because GOD FORBID anyone else should learn something for themselves through a bad experience. /rant

Seriously, Sesame Street actually TAUGHT kids things. How are kids gonna learn shit from Pokemon?

Avenue Q used to be a stage show in Vegas a few years back, they were let out of their contract because no one went to see it, and the thousands of dollars they invested in the furry taxi Cabs to advertise the show was silly, My only regrets are that  I didn't see show, and I should have taken a pictures of the furry taxi cabs while they were still around.

FWIW, my wife and I went to see it in London one friday evening.

Well worth the money - absolutely hysterical for anyone who grew up watching Sesame Street.

... and now I'll be humming the tunes for days...

If I remember right, and if it's still there, someone did manage to take some footage of the 'Internet is for Porn' section of the play and put it up on Youtube.

Sponge Bob makes fun of people with microcephaly!  Look at Patrick's head!  IT'S TINY!!!  People with microcephaly have TINY HEADS!!  And Patrick is portrayed as incredibly stupid!  It's an insult!  I'm protesting and suing for $264 billion on behalf of all microcephalics everywhere... for a 30% settlement fee.   >:3

This Sesame Street thing isn't all.  Watching glimpses of news shows while surfing channels whilst the IVs for the clinical study were getting situated in my arms, I came upon both the Sesame Street nonsense and another bunch of crap about a book that a publisher said should be edited because a little cutesy dragon used its dragon fire to roast marshmallows... which could make children play with fire.

I... hate... politically correct... bull@#$%.

I'm seriously considering making my Don Imus and Michael Richards version of the "Badger, Badger" song, even though I'll likely receive death threats for it, just to seriously piss off the PC asswipes.  Or, I would if I knew how the heck to use FLASH.   :B

These are some of the same twits that always screamed 'freedom of speech' for eerything in the past.  I guess their real desire is freedom of speech only for what they decide you can say... and thus we step a little closer to Soviet and Chinese-style communism.  It happens a little at a time, and then one day you wake up to discover that in the interest of 'cooperating' with the 'world consensus', using the words 'freedom' and 'human rights' and 'liberty' on your computer will get you sued, or arrested.
