(I'm not sure if this should go in the Outer Fortress or the Arena.  I chose here because it's not a game and is non-competitive)

I recently dusted off my P.D.Q. Bach, and discovered that my life has been missing some Dementia.  I'm curious as to what y'all like in that genre (A) for recommendations, and (B) because I thought it would be fun.

Some suggestions to get you started:

PDQ Bach (a little high-brow)
Tom Lehrer
Stevens & Grdnic
Barnes & Barnes

As to individual songs:

Henry VIII - Herman's Hermits
Black Hole Sun - Steve and Eydie
Unforgettable - Ani DiFranco and Jackie Chan

I remember Bucephalus Bouncing Ball from the Pi soundtrack, but are they really Demented?  Most of their stuff seems pretty straightforward to me.

They Might Be Giants, hands-down favorite.

Then again, I listen to mostly odd stuff anymore, with very little newer mainstream mixed in. I hopped off the music bus back when hip-hop and rap started being considered...music. *shudders*

I listen to a lot of filk, and a few of my favorite artists include Leslie Fish, Hamish Imlach, and Mercedes Lackey. Not always zany music, but certainly nothing you'll ever hear on the radio.

Favorite of mine, too.  I didn't list them because most of their work isn't (to my mind, at least) Demented.

You might consider Weep Day or Chess Piece Face to be novelty/comedy, but I see them as pretty much just normal music.  Why Does the Sun Shine or Greek #3, OTOH, are pretty much in the Demented category.

Negativland is in the same category as TMBG.

I did forget to list a couple others, though:

- Two Live Nurse (famous for The Girl With Emphysema)
- Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine

How about the "An Electric Storm" LP by White Noise?  The last two tracks are frightening, but the thing as a whole is pretty messed up.

(It is said that a popular game in the early 70s was for a group of students to take a large amount of acid, put side 2 on and hide in a cupboard.  The last person to run away screaming was the winner.)

Tsk tsk tsk, who could forget this?
Good call.  I didn't know there was a video for it, though.

(probably the most demented of mine, especially the ending)

Oh yeah, he's supposed to talk with reverse reverb, isn't he?

Now, if you want demented, check out some Spike Jones, if you can.  Also "Serutan Yob" by The Unnatural Seven which is quite similar.  This is all stuff from the late 1940s and it's impressive how well it's stood up, especially some of the stuff from the Spike Jones show.

**EDIT**
This is a fairly typical example (although it's pretty slow for the first 2-3 minutes):

I've got the box set of Jones and His City Slickers.  Thanks for reminding me!

I've been curious about Jones' Other Orchestra, though.  Anybody know anything about that?

I have the full 3 CD set of Tom Lehrer.

Would you rather hear The Masochism Tango or Poisoning Pigeons In The Park?   :)

Send The Marines is better, IMNSHO.

Either that or The Hunting. Or Smut. Or Lobachevsky. Or Clementine (specifically the G&S rendition, although some of the others are also good...)
