He might have a point.  We really don't have enough data to go on.  Besides, Abel is very much drawn to misery anyway.
FWIW Fa'Lina said that this was an abnormal situation.  It'll be interesting to see what Dan thinks after his first month at SAIA, but that might not be enough time for the honeymoon to wear off.

Well, Abel found out in his young adulthood that he was a) a separate race than he'd been led to believe, b) that he was a child of rape by deceit, c) all this happened in several hours of death and violence and was followed his abduction by a man that was effectively a stranger.

The past 375 years of Abel's life have been bitter resentment, self-loathing, likely some internalized racism, and pushing everyone he can away (excepting warp-aci, Mink, Fa'lina, Aaryanna, possibly Kria, and maybe a few we don't know about).

Trauma (in the real world, anyway) literally, physiologically changes the brain. Abel has neural pathways that have been reinforced for 3 and 3/4ths centuries. Even if some of his behavior is maladaptive, he's not going to change it overnight (unless cubi neuroplasticity is something else, which is possible). That he's let in the people he has as much as he has is phenomenal progress, and this is without professional help. He's effectively doubled his (sure, we'll go ahead and call it) friendship pool. I don't think he's giving himself enough credit.

There's certainly hatred, but a lot if it is just pain.

Nothing stays the same even bad luck.

Just because he has had a long bad run doesn't mean it will continue forever.

Technically, shouldn't that actually be species and not race?

Technically, shouldn't that actually be species and not race?

In DMFA, it's two-layered.
Race is kind of like a character class in a way.  Abel's species is feline, his race is 'cubi.  Jyrras species is kangaroo rat, his race is Being.  If you used 'species' to denote both attributes things would get really confusing, really fast...

EDIT EDIT: Abel also leaves out the fact that his father was literally driven insane.

For that matter the 'You'll outlive your friends' thing is not restricted to Creatures.  All things being equal, a Being (or a real-life human) who reaches advanced old age will have seen their parents die, most family or friends who are slightly older than them, and a number who were younger when they died.

Yeah, I think "big" is a good description according to the new comic (1752) that was just posted.
