I love the clan marking on the nose.  And is that a Warp-Aci with a cookie inside it?

Whee this page got the "Queen of the Winter Night" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra stuck in my head. So fun to look at!

And no need to thank any of us, Amber. We should be thanking you for still putting up a comic as you go through this craziness. On that note... thank you.  :hug

oh, and also, that guy in the background(again, 3rd panel), red and black is that terror, or is he having a heart attack?

You know, this got me wondering. If a 'Cubi has a clan symbol on say the top of the head, or anywhere that celiphic hair would be on a human, would that "hair" hide the symbol even when the normal fur that most 'Cubi have doesn't?

I must admit that I'm a bit confused as to what is going on in this week's Abel strip.

While very interesting visually, I'm afraid I'm totally lost as to how this follows from the previous strip.

Anyone care to explain?

Thanks!

Looks more like anger or rage to me.  Most likely directed at the gryphon cubi jumping over him.

Also, do I spy some CnC characters in the third panel?

Erm, unless I'm really mistaken, the cubi in the third panel with the pink wings is Sari from Cats N' Cameras, and the one with the green headwings next to her is Jo, from the same comic.  (Before anyone who's never heard of Cats N' Cameras goes looking for it, just wanna warn you that it's rated MA).

I'll give it a shot.

When a new Abel's Story page comes up, I generally start a few pages back to refresh my memory and get a feel for the pacing. I didn't do it this time because the previous page led me to believe there was a scene change coming up. Hey, I was right! Scene change!

The Sari cubi is adorable -- and absolutely dead on; you couldn't draw her any more perfectly "on model". I hope she's one of the cubi clans that live on joy and happiness -- that would totally suit her character. Fun to see a bit of the chaos that is SAIA.

Good luck next week Amber! Don't worry about us -- any whiners will be taken out and shot somewhere especially painful.

Probably depends on how many people know that 'Cubi have clan marks.  The casual observer might write it off as a tattoo like Xander did.

I have to wonder... if Xander's "cousin" is a 'Cubi, running a tattoo store would be a pretty safe bet. Everyone would write off the mark as a tattoo, and if you're eating pain, you'd get fat off the customers. A win-win, as it were...

Just an idle thought I figured I'd share with folks, to mess with them. ;-]

POINTLESS TRIVA TIME! :U

Panel One: The book that particular student is reading is a book about summoning. The symbol on the front is which clan it was produced by.  Most clans when writing books will have their clan symbol on the front and the subject matter on the spine.  As such, a good chunk of the library has mini sections dedicated to a particular clans writing.  Had I not been a dink, I likely would have put Cyra's clan symbol on the front of the book Dan has.  That or next time its shown I will.

Panel Two: Friah and her warp aci.  That particular clan is one of the remaining 12 clans that still has an active leader. Friah herself is vain, but pleasant.

Panel Three: As a few peeps spotted, cameos abound for Cats n Cameras. Being friends with both creators of the comic, I threatened them a bit that I would likely add cameos. Originally I was going to do the whole crew...but my hand already hates me for this page.  Instead I just added Sari and Jo.  To the far left, a naga-mythos er..."walking" by and Pidge the blue bat...who had one gotten a full shot...one would note that Pidge has the batwings that take up the full side-area thus doesnt hae the standard wings coming from the back like most Cubi.  God freaking knows what a tri-winged bat Cubi would look like...which is probably a joking subject of conversation between Pidge and friends.

Panel Four: The two mythos in the forefront are a particular type of Mythos that are always born as twins. The silver is male, the gold female. Despite the gender difference and two bodies, they consider themselves a single individual.  Dating is always an odd thing since basically one has to be dating the both of them and most other races tend to not get around the idea of the two not being a seperate individual.

The striped mouse is from a clan that specializes in Distrust.  He's actually relatively a nice guy...but finds that if you look shady, people react to you as such.  The gryphon is from a confusion clan.  The bunny walking away is from a hope clan.  The warp aci is from a clan that isn't pictured here.

NOT THAT IT MATTERS since odds are none of these characters will never show up again. But isn't it fun to know I am a doof when it comes to details that dont matter at all? :U

The twin thing taken to the extreme,a shared soul of sorts? Interesting. If they dated would they both be interested in the same person, diffrent people or would they only successfully date a member (set) of the same species?

Continuing to love the amount of thought and detail Amber puts into the world of DMFA.

Intersting, no-one else has mentioned 'Fire upon the Deep' yet.  Though those particular creatures had their mind shared between all the members of a pack telepathically (actually ultrasound).  The Tines had to have at least four members to be human-smart - if they had more than five or six, the propagation delay would start to become a problem and the pack would become less smart as it increased in size.

The twin thing taken to the extreme,a shared soul of sorts? Interesting. If they dated would they both be interested in the same person, diffrent people or would they only successfully date a member (set) of the same species?

Either that or someone's going to be very happy to have a set of twins to themselves!  :P
Male and female twins. I have to point that out.

Haha, your point is?  x3  There are people out there who would still enjoy both! >:3

The difference here, I think, is that the animals in Fire have to be in close range--and that it's irrelevant who they are in close range with.

I get the sense that the mythos are in continuous telepathic contact with each other, and that this is exclusive to them.

(incidentally, I'm not sure if that qualifies as a spoiler, because I really enjoyed the way Vinge revealed it)

Reminds me a bit of Arethusa, from Spider Robinson's Lady Slings the Booze.

Although both of her bodies were female.

(For those who haven't read the book, Arethusa was originally a set of identical twins who were raised as one person, and as a result became literally one person in two bodies.)

Mistrust and confusion, must be problematic having an emotional affinity for some thing negative.
Come to think about it most of the cubi characters mentioned in DMFA have a negative emotional affinity.

Dea/Dan: pain
Aniz/Abel: Misery
Aaryanna: Pain?

Good to see one has a positive affinity (the hope bunny)

Aaryanna: Pain?

According to the cast page, Aaryanna's favorite foods are passion and pain.

Cookie ACI made me smile. :>

For a second I thought the clan-marking on it WAS a cookie.

Ah yes, the infamous Cookie Cubi Clan, whose downfall was conspired by cleptomaniac Claude Cooper from Cleveland who clipped their clean copper clappers.

:>

And if I catch cleptomaniac Claude Cooper from Cleveland who clipped my clean copper clappers out of the closet, I'll clobber him.

Abel's favourite food is listed as confusion (and roast duck) but his affinity is misery.

Negative emotions does not mean negative action to get said emotion. I could see a fear/pain cubi working as a nurse, or a distrust cubi purposely "stalking" someone to tap them on the shoulder and day "you dropped this, miss." and hand them a 20...

Give me a negative emotion and I will tell you how I would use it to make my life pure awesome.

Just so - it's going to depend on the attitude of the 'Cubi.  I had a skit in one of my stories where the lead character - a fear incubus - goes to eat out by watching a horror film at the cinema.

Do disgust.

Once you're done with that, try boredom.

I'll try my hand. Both disgust and boredom could be easily done through teaching. Disgust I'd do bio labs, the ones which smell of formaldehyde and the teacher announces "Today we'll be dissecting worms. Put them in alcohol to stun them, and try not to hit any arteries as you cut. If you can keep them alive, you'll be able to see the aortic rings at work" (Which was a real lab I did. Except all of us killed our worms)

Boredom. Try history. Or literature. There are always lots of people who don't understand those subjects and are bored to tears by them.

Remember, education is the future!

I have considered that true courage is a large amount of fear with the will to go though with it anyway.

Therefore a cubi that fed on fear could encourage people to perform courageous acts to get that distinct flavour.

(Yes, that was a detail of a character I designed, see a couple of posts back to find out what happened to them, considering how complicated Dan's full emotional infinity is I figured 'courage' feeding could even be common)

Well, you're right. Courageous acts are done out of obligation beyond one's own fears; the underlying fear therein exists and said courageous person fears, but that's besides the point. It'd be a lot better to keep a person hanging between that abject cowardice and moment of courage for as long as a 'cubi can, or more ideally, forever.

There are people in this world that think about doing courageous things but never carry it out. They fall short of commitment and wallow in self-pity. They're the most delicious treats a fear 'cubi could ever set their eyes on. People who are afraid of themselves, what others would think about them, or simply, afraid to die.

Just my thoughts. If I wanted fear, I'd get fear, not courage.

I had an idea for something like that a while back, only in this case it was a boy and a girl born at the same time but on opposite sides of the world. I was just interested in how someone would deal with having two simultaneous lives, having two completely different perspectives on life (different families, different schools, different truths etc.) which would give them so much knowlege on how the world worked and how a universe of difference could exist between each individual person. It also occurred to me what things would and wouldn't be shared. Since there are still two brains, one could learn something like archery, while the other would still be a bad shot. The other one would still understand the principals, theory, and emotions of archery; but just wouldn't have the muscle memory.

Incidentally, this sorta links in with a theory I have on time travel. If you travel back to meet a past self, your minds will resonate with eachother strongly making thoughts and feelings hard to distinguish and your single soul will become shared between the two bodies.
