So does this mean that Dan has the ability to project others' thoughts?  Or are those his own?

It's possible Fi might be able to read his thoughts too.  Dan was expecting Abel to foresee the melon thing, after all, so his mind is not being shielded.

a) Quite sure it's his own, sort of.
b) Fi can read thoughts? or...
c) Dan can project thoughts for others to read? or...
d) His subconsious is strong enough to project thoughts? (and the only subconsious thing we know of Dan thus far are his wingies...)

Aww.  You gotta admit, though, if it were possible, it would be awesome to use `cubi for movie projectors.  ``OK, Dan.  We're going to buy one ticket to Ben Hur.  Then come back here and tell us what you saw.''

(This gives me an idea...)

I've often wondered how people (especially males) manage to cope if they are attracted to a parent or sibling. There is a condition where if a brother and sister are separated at an early age and then meet up later they can be sexually attracted to each other.Star wars is a good example of this.(Luke and Leia)

Imagine if your mother stayed looking 25 all of your life.

Personally I think humanity is serious messed up, our backs to the forest, or eyes turned towards the stars. (I'll have to remember that one)

I was going to go to sleep, but I realized that I totally forgot to comment on the awesome drawing in panels 2 and 3.  The shading, the coloring, the shapes are all quite excellent.  Right down to the little pink blushes in Abel's cheeks, which stand out quite nicely in contrast to the metallic cobalt background.

This sort of 4th-wall-breaking would've led to interesting results during this comic (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_715.php)

Nice one, though. Some silly and pure humor was a nice change from Abel's "Your mother is pure evil!" fallout. :)

I'm taking it that Dan knows his mother more than Able does, including the not so good parts of her.  Dan barely flinched when Able described D as one of the most evil things he's seen.
Though I will say this, Dan does have a way of making his mom look hot (I wanna date her though she's married, Oh well... pointless flirting then).

What surprises me is that Fi was able to see Dan's mind projection long before he was consciously aware of it.  That shows that Dan has more control over his conscious mind than his subconscious mind.

I think a scientific approach is in order....
We need a full wallpaper of Destania, as she was dressed in panel two and three to truly judge the family resemblance between her and Dan.

(science my six...  D is hot and looks awesome in those panels)

Just realized, but it's probably been stated before.
Destania and Alexsi are probably two of the most scary people Able's met and they are both related to Dan by blood.  That should make Dan one of the top 20 scariest by proxy though we all know that Dan is in fact the #1 most annoying individual that Able's met.

Having taken Greek Mythology, I would like to clear up something even Freud got mixed up.  Oedipus did not love his mother incestual, he in fact did not even know the woman he had married was his mother (having never known her since his father had the boy abandoned in the mountains because a prophet said Oedipus would be the death of him).  Plus, there is the whole thing of once he realized who she was he quickly gouged out his eyes for his horrible mistake, so he's little more than a subject of cruel fate.  It didn't help that his father was a temperamental idiot that Oedipus killed in a fit of road rage (he still did not know that this was his actual father at the time).

Just felt like clearing that up.  Behold the epitome of ancient dysfunctional families.

Assuming for a moment that that's actually Dan's mental image (and that the out-of-continuity joke is just the fact that it's suddenly projected behind him), this sorta raises the question of how old Dan estimates both Abel and his mother to be.

I'm not sure if he was ever told (in strict canon, limited to what was actually said in a comic) how old either of them are, but either he knows the rough ages of both or neither since he clearly pictures his mother as being an adult while Abel is still a kid.

Of course, keeping in mind that Dan most likely knows quite a bit of his mother's background, he'll know that she's not as young as she looks like.

Well, Abel has tossed out the 300 years figure in a snappy comeback to Dan (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_658.php) as well, but he never actually said that's how long — give or take a few decades— he's been studying (to be a jerk).

Just felt like clearing that up.  Behold the epitome of ancient dysfunctional families.

What I find funny about the Oedipus story was that if old dad did not listen to the 'seer' then the whole 'son killing pop and marrying mom' would not have happened.  If Oedipus parents were proper parents then those events would not have happened.

Dan's expression in the last panel says it all, he loves his mom in a son loves his mom sort of way (the proper way).  He was even upset at his sub conscious for thinking of that and asked for Bleach to clean the memory from his mind.
The Dan impersonating Alexsi also shows that he respects his sister and loves her as a sister (the way it should be).

Dan may be a quick to flirt slow to think kind of guy but he's a good quick to flirt, slow to think kind of guy.

Dude, if a persons mother is young and attractive, it is perfectly normal to recognize that, and possibly even to feel a degree of attraction for her.  This applies doubly for visions and imaginations taking place a long time in the past.  Dan has no need to consume vast amounts of bleach to cleanse his system.

(snickers) Dan's expression in the last panel wins. And I agree with Fi, why would one imagine one's mom in such a low-cut top? :erk

As I said earlier, I don't think Dan did that on purpose.  If he didn't do that on purpose then he would not have been surprised by what his imagination pulled out on him.

As the comic title says, "Dan's subconscious hates him."

As on why FI can see Dan's subconscious image... It is probably due to the fact that Dan now has a Warp-Aci.  We don't know much on warp-aci but we do know that they can transport from point A to point B and so forth.
So for all we know with a Warp-Aci Dan's thoughts could have been transmitted between the two and seen in wide screen.

Maybe he's doing that because he thinks THIS IS THE SITUATION ABEL MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN to support his "Abel has the hots for my mom" theory?

Maybe, just maybe, it's a joke with a blatent fourth wall break, just to be a joke with a blatent fourth wall break, and has nothing to do at all with what Dan would actually think.

I have no idea (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php?topic=3290.msg141542#msg141542) why I would think that though.

Breaking the fourth wall refers to any form of intentionally breaking the suspension of disbelief, not just directly addressing the audience... like, say, a stage hand visibly handing an actor a prop on stage as part of a play.

Well, besides the source I was quoting for that... (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php?topic=3290.msg141542#msg141542) The way the comic is presented, it does not show any real reference to the poster in the background being a "thought" as far as I can tell, but rather, as a poster in the background which the characters are suddenly standing in front of.

This challenging the reader's disbelief, and breaking the fourth wall, even though neither character directly addressed the audience.

So my interpretation is that the strip is just a "to the audience" joke that is a play on the last frame of the last strip, and not meant to be any sort of literal interpretation of what was going on in Dan's head.

YMMV.

I have somehow missed the title for this update (*insert Benny Hill theme here*), and feel compelled to note that the title of the song used for the Benny Hill credits is Yakety Sax (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXnJl0Kaajs).

I don't really have anything else to say, except that I don't know how Yakety Sax relates to anything, unless it's relating to Amber's hectic schedule.  If that's the case, then I feel sorry for Amber.

QuoteDefinitions of fourth wall on the Web:

the invisible wall open to the audience in a box set (see also box set)
wps.ablongman.com/wps/media/objects/130/133428/glossary.html

convention of the realistic theater in which the audience assumes it is looking through an invisible wall into an actual room; this wall is determined by the opening in the proscenium arch.
filmplus.org/thr/dic2.html

The imaginary wall through which the audience can see into the lives of the characters.
www.kentaylor.co.uk/die/materials/docs/lessons/yr12/edmonton1/a_level_glossary.html

an imaginary surface at the edge of the stage through with the audience watches a performance
www.yotor.com/wiki/en/th/Theater%20terms.htm

Specifically in a proscenium theater, the term fourth wall applies to the imaginary invisible wall at the front of the stage in a theater through which the audience sees the action in the world of the play. In an arena theater, or theater-in-the-round, all four walls are in effect "fourth walls." One also speaks of a fourth wall in fictional realms, in literature, movies, television, radio, comic books, and other forms of entertainment.

Further into the Wikipedia article you quote, which I used for reference:
Quote
The term "breaking the fourth wall" in theatre generally means when a character is showing his/her awareness of the audience. The term originated from Bertolt Brecht's theory of "epic theatre" that he developed from (and in contrast to) Konstantin Stanislavski's drama theory. Most often, the fourth wall is broken through a character directly addressing the audience, although the same effect can be achieved by breaking character, through dialogue, or by the characters interacting with objects outside the context of the work (e.g. a character is handed a prop by a stage hand).

Anyway, that is my last word on the subject. Obviously it's only fair that your entitled to your own. I'll be happy to read it. I just won't respond to it publicly, 'cause I think I've bored people to death sufficiently already here... and I don't think that's worth doing over such a hair splitting subject.

I've probably beaten this horse more than enough, but that isn't stopping me from posting this apparently. My will is weak...

(Working with gut instinct only, it's possible I'm not completely right)
"Breaking character" is basically just a character not really acting like the character. For example, if a character refers to being in a comic or has access to information he normally shouldn't have, then that's basically him breaking character. Mild examples of this would be actually mentioning flashbacks (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_414.php), sensing plot twists (and having no memory of things that happened off-panel) (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_145.php), interacting with the narrator (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_216.php), and so on. For more serious examples, read Bob and George (http://www.bobandgeorge.com/). :P

In this case, Dan and Fi react to something that's in the comic panel, but not actually in their world. The mental image is only projected for the reader (like when Biggs imagined Danielle while describing her), but the characters see it anyway.

Hope that helps...

ok if the fourth wall actively engages the audience (i.e. information that is known through an outside reasourse/ other reality) and the third wall shows comic characters actively realizing they are part of a continuity within a reality (i.e. a character mentioning somthing that happened several strips ago, litterally using "didn't we do that several strips ago?") then  what are the first and second walls?

Having romantic or sexual feelings toward a parent is still called an Oedipus Complex.

And can we drop the whole "fourth wall" thing already?  It's been explained several times; if people still don't get it, or refuse to accept it as such, they never will.  And the whole thing will be forgotten as soon as Abel's Story updates anyway.

The first through third wall are not their own thing. They refer to the physical walls of a play, things that are really part of the play. I do not believe there is any third wall usage like you suggest at all. When a character refers to information they would not have "in character" they are breaking character, and thus, breaking the forth wall.

I suggest you read all of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_wall (note: third wall just redirects to this article) and come to your own conclusions however. People seem to find interpretations there that I don't quite see myself, so I may be way off base.

Oh, I don't think that the entire subject is dead... there seems to be some honest confusion on some people's part on how the term is used. Now, trying to decide if any particular comic is or is not involving the forth wall may have achieved 'beating dead horse' status at this point...

You know what I like?  I like this comic.  I was hoping that maybe we could discuss it?  Like, how Amber seems to be pretty adept at doing Merrie Melodies homages:

Go Amber!

I hadn't noticed that...  :boggle Dan's eye honestly made me think of L from Death Note.

We need a full wallpaper of Destania, as she was dressed in panel two and three to truly judge the family resemblance between her and Dan.

Uh, I'm pretty sure to fully see the resemblance we'd need a wallpaper of DAN in that little outfit.  ;)

HAHA! NO FREE SHOWS FOR YOU!

*Charles still thinks Fa'lina is hotter*  But yes, Dan has many issues, which just keep growing and compounding as time goes on.  I'm sure he's going to end up marrying a coat rack out of utter confusion and delusion one day.  :3

Charles likes big butts and he did not lie
Us other brothers shouldn't deny
That when a Poodle walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in his face
He gets sprung
Wanna pull up tough
Cuz he noticed that rump was stuffed

*Charles erfs*  That's not true!  I like big boobs!  Er...  :blush

i agree with AndersW.  Sid Did make an excellent case much better then i could have and his choice of referring comics and it has a large selection of this humor including the author entering the comic and author character self depreciation humor

No, I believe he's merely warning of impending doom. The doom has not happened yet. I'd make it happen, were it not for my evil summer project. :<

I'd still like to see a wallpaper for Destania...even if this one comic strip was a Fourth- wall breaker joke.

CVRPG says (http://www.cvrpg.com/main.php?page=donate) $450, and that's assuming he doesn't get some sorta family & friends discount.

Dude. If someone is willing to plunk down $450, there is few limits to what I'd be willing to draw for them.  That's just common sense. :B

Urf...I feel so terrible for mentioning this...but after literally getting 10+ pounds of swedish fish in less than a year and having to try to eat them all...I actually don't enjoy them anymore.  :<

I've been scared to mention any other favorite food I might have out of fear it will also get flooded to me and I'll end up overdosing on them to the point I don't like them anymore either.

22 pounds of chocolate isn't that much, really.  Not when you eat it the way I do.
