Title: 9/12/06 - Take out the trash!
Post by: Gabi on December 08, 2006, 08:56:20 PM
Good for Devin! I must admit I'm starting to like him. I'd never thought I would.

On another note, congratulations to Amber on managing to post 6 updates in 6 days!

I agree. This especially violent reaction from Devin utterly confirms the boyfriend hypothesis. And that ice magic is worthy of Kopaka.

For some reason when I saw the comic this popped into my head.

QuoteSome say the world will end in fire;
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

The guy doing the shooting is a sniper and a sniper's best friend is misdirection.  In my opinion I wouldn't be surprised if that vantage point that was turned into a freezer was nothing more than a decoy.

Hell with a transmitting camera, a few servo's, a couple of motors, a reciving monitor, transmitter and reciever I can make a platform that is able to move and pivit, mounting a firearm in it will not be so difficult and I can in essence sniper someone from 2 or more places at once.

Also... me personally I think that was just the start of the sniper.
Anyways... anyone who went through the trouble of circling around to get the drop on his foes and waiting that long would not go down so easily.

that's like, 20X more technology they'd have on +- 380 years on the DMFA past.

if there is someting it would be more like a magical item in which the user can shoot fireballs through

The violent reaction doesn't.  The muttering about times to mourn does.  Which goes to show that they did have a Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf type relationship.

I wonder if I can come up with an appropriate eulogy for this situation...

He did just give away his location, though.

Also, I wonder if Abel learned the Litany against Fear from Devin...

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, unless Amber doth decide that the Creature be dead, there shalt be more casting of the fireballs, and that a full-out mage battle wilt then ensue.

Anyways, someone mentioned Queen?

Now once upon a time an old man told me a fable,
Where the Piper is gone and the soup is cold on the table,
And when the black crow flies to find a new destination,
That is the sign!

I was beginning to wonder where Devin's weapon was especially with the 'plink him' in the last comic .. wondering if I missed the dagger holder, or it was in the infamous RPG inventory (or I guess in DMFA the Sword-Hammer zone) .. I guess this clears that up nicely  :)

I would have pegged Abel as the first to use magic, but there ya go :)

He still knows it, but at this point I bet he's just too scared. I mean, the kid hasn't really seen any battle in his life before this.

Good for him though! I hate snipers....

BF2, I had a guy snipe me 3 times in a row last night. In a pretty protected area too. Dedicated the rest of the round to finding him. Got him good though :)

Exactly
Abel may know magic but he's not a warrior here he's a libriarian,  thats not a carreer that prepares one for a pitched magical battle.

Speaking as a sniper (battle feild: Galactic conquest  gotta love those deployable holo blinds) You may call it cheap but it's a perfectly legitimate combat tactic,  Snipers are usualy lightly armored and armed with a highpowered but slow weapon so if we are caught in the open we're toast.  Ever try and pull off a hipshot with a sniper rifle unless you get lucky on that first shot your dead.

Besides this guy isn't a sniper.  This is an ambush yes but he's no sniper, he seems to be operating the magical equivilent of a machine gun nest.  He's pumping out alot of fire  but it's wild an inaccurate.  If he was a true sniper these folks only warning would have come when one of them dropped deadas is Xander had enough warning to draw an arrow, and Glory had a sheild going.  If he's a sniper he's an ambarassment to us all.

Xander on te other hand,  that boy was a good sniper.  Abel didn't know what hit him

Hmmm...

This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'

Well, for one, bullets are a lot faster than balls of fire (I'm assuming, since Glory had time to see it coming and defend against it.)  Also, they're much less noticable, I'm sure.  So  There's a big difference between a huge flaming ball of glowing-ness that you can obviously see coming, and a bullet travelling probably at least a mile in seconds.

I honestly didn't want to say anything cause you guys seemed to be having such a jolly fun time speculating.

But the simple truth was I completly forgot I had that character in the background as most of them were simply filler or cameos.  I am fond of the marking over eye gimmick...and red is a colour that goes well with black/white combos in my opinion.  So really, the two of them looking similar are pure coincidence and have nothing to do with eachother.  I feel kind of bad that the whole thing was nothing more than a red-herring so to speak.   :confused

I see nothing wrong with that. Speculation can be fun but it's no more than that; it doesn't have to lead anywhere. That, and there are people in the real world who look similar, so why couldn't there be similar-looking characters in the DMFA world?

I really like the themed speech bubbles and sound effect words, they work wonders for the overall effect.

That and death by ice crystals, ouch. If you bleed there's a chance you freeze to the ice impaling you.

On comparing the attacks to existing weapons,I'd say the fire balls are more like grenades. Dev's attack is one of those 'not going to do one of those again anytime soon' attacks. He'll probably need to lie down for a bit.

Oh and can people stop saying 'dev's shown a bit of emotion towards a guy, he must be gay' its getting very repetitive and annoying.

That seemed too easy. A creature that puts out a trap and ambushes two groups of adventurers must be good enough to handle these kind of things. Maybe the fireball spitter is just a distraction?

Sorry if it has been brought up before.

Heh.  It might have been better if you'd said 'no' in the first place.  This sort of thing has happened before, and that fact that you didn't deny it outright was actually one of the main reasons I figured I was on to a winner. (http://www.jpmorris.force9.co.uk/stuff/icon_twisted.gif)

I find it quite interesting that so far, Beings have displayed greater magical skill than most Creatures. Only Mab and her parents have actually shown magic on the same level as Devin or Glory. Abel did display some nice tricks, but nothing as devastating as the Ice spell (or Mab's nuke spell). I'd even put Merlitz above Abel when it comes to display intensity (though Abel has shown greater diversity).

(For the log, I'm not counting personal or racial traits like enhanced strength or wing tentacles as magic in this sense.)

Heh.  It might have been better if you'd said 'no' in the first place.  This sort of thing has happened before, and that fact that you didn't deny it outright was actually one of the main reasons I figured I was on to a winner. (http://www.jpmorris.force9.co.uk/stuff/icon_twisted.gif)

Aw, but where's the fun in that? ;)

Perhaps magic is tied into the spirit and feelings of the person casting it? When a person flips out physically, he can hit harder and such because of his emotions. Perhaps Devins rage, dispite the fact that he forced it down, cause he spell to be a wee bit more powerful than usual?

Oh! And I now know what that ice spell reminds me of! One of the fun, yet worst games, I ever played; Mystic Heros. I had an attack almost exactly like that, if I remember right.

Which is anouther strike against calling him a sniper.  His choice of of attack is not a snipers attack.  It's too slow,  I'd say lightning would have been a beter choice for a magical sniper.

Hell even the fireballs would be okay if he seemd to attack with any accuracy.

Like I said this isn't a sniper, it's an ambush.  He's blasting away and hopping he hits

:confused
I swear you've already explained that once before...

My guess, just in keeping with the 'tragic' storyline developing so far:

Xander went to the tower to send a message, but got knocked out by the monster (or maybe the monster just thought it had killed him).  Monster leaves Xander in the tower, goes back to Devin and Abel, and tries to leave (I'm guessing he's trying to throw Glory, or anybody else, off his trail- he does specify they need to hurry when he meets up with them at the lake).  Glory shows up and stops them from leaving, which gives Xander enough time to come to.  Xander sees Devin and Abel surrounded by himself (who he knows is the monster) and three other creatures (he probably can't tell who they are from the watchtower; just that they're with the monster and have his friends cornered).  Seeing his party members in trouble, he does the only thing an adventuring hero can do- he attacks.

I get this impression because of three things:

The fort wasn't actually burned down when it was attacked; Devin said it just looked like somebody knocked over a lantern.  If fireballs were getting thrown around, that probably wouldn't be the case.

Xander got pretty upset when Glory showed up- "Oh shi-!"

Devin said that the attacker was concentrating on Glory's team.  Granted, Devin and Abel had jumped out of sight while Glory and the others were standing and fighting, but it still supports the theory that Xander is... errr... was... up in the tower trying to save Devin and Abel.

Plus, I love how the talk bubble looks like a snowflake when Devin attacked.  (Not really important, just thought it was a nice touch. ^^)

That speech balloon is pure dope. :D
For some reason, I never really liked Xander all that much. I mean, he seemed like an alright fellow, but he was very much shadowed by Devin's personality. Regardless, I do hope that he's not dead. Unlikely, but there you go.

Why? The first few panels were Devin getting control of himself. I would understand the thought if it weren't for those panels, but I don't think Devin would do anything that would leave him too weak to defend himself of follow up. It doesn't make sense to me, to send all your power into a single attack.
Just my opinion, of course. Devin may not have gotten as much control over himself as he thought, or something.

It's always a struggle having to decide what is simple speculation fluff, and what is something that I should step into.  Obviously if I tried to donk out every speculation there wouldn't be much a story to tell...and it would ruin some of the suprise of the character.  Sometimes the speculation just solves itself if I hold off even.

Looking at the story outline of Abel's Story...this wasn't the case though.  If people didn't shake the belief now, it wasnt going to get any better since I had/have no intention of bringing little background Cubi into the story at any point.(who btw was a female)  And I'd feel bad if people kept holding onto the hope or belief.

You guys hit a really big coincidence...but it was nothing more than a coincidence.  Sometimes you peeps give me way too much credit.

On another note, how the Hell do they build those villages and places? I'm just curious, since just getting an idea of the layout and construction techniques would be very helpful to determine what just happened, why, and what would be best for Devin and company to do next. And what's with the walls of that place? Is it just me, or is the level of development of the society shifting a bit back and forth?

So he shot a rocket and killed me, but, I continued sniping the rest of the game and won, 50 sniping kills, I was the victor with a 44 kill killing spree, and a killtacular.  IT WAS FUN THOUGH! Especially when people ran by me and didn't notice me. :3

Well, when you have fur, they should aleady be covered.  Until then, maybe some sort of lether strap thing.  I'm still working out what my half-giant is going to wear before he goes werepanther.  When you have that much chest and muscle, it gets tricky trying to cover it all.

Edit: plus you'll need some protective armor.  A bare chest just makes it a bullseye.

I also see a real man as someone who slays enemy hordes along with anything that gets in his way, so he can really wear whatever he likes cause he doesn't take **** from anyone.  He will need a cup and steel toed boots, to protect those "tender" areas.

A man needs nothing more than what he is comfortable wearing.  In fact that half-giant is going to need a new pair of pants after the transformation.

I stick to boxers.  They help to breath while laying about the house.

Do what the comics do and put an X of tape across em. :B

Putting only comfy and usefulness over aesthetics works well if you are a hermit...but if you are in a social environment, odds are your outfits will conform slightly to the demands of those around you.  Which is why fashion exists in the first place.

A real man or woman knows how to wear an outfit that can manage both aspects of usefulness and aesthetic.

...and we're all just confused as to what we're actually talking about anymore.

Now, why Mana has anything to say about what manly men wear, I don't know. Nor do I know why or completely believe that Zina licks Peter Griffin. All I know for sure, is that it's true that real men don't really care, or have to care what we're wearing. Interpret that as you wish. But it doesn't mean you can't have a sense of style as a man though. That's not what I'm saying.

...and goodness gracious, blue balls of ice!

"...I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!"

But yeah, men do tend not to care what you think, that's why we'll go aroudn wearing shirts with stains and holes in them.  Most men work with a more logical way of thinking (or at least less emotional), doing things only if they know it will provide some benefit to them ("Oh, it's cold, I better put on a sweatshirt." ::grabs random one from closet::).  The idea of fashion is more deeply rooted with women, which is why they're willing to spend so much on clothes and jewelry (though it seems like everything we wear costs too much these days).

Goo goo goo joob!

OK.  I get the point.  Let's get back on topic.

Following up on Stygian's quote, does the watchtower look like Brutalist architecture to anyone else?  That's kinda out of place for this era, and the low-cost, utilitarian feel doesn't exactly fit with the fantasy setting.

Economises are necessary even in fantasy as every thing has some cost with or without money. Not even all the power of the universe is unlimited take it form a twink that would know.

The problem with that is that the economics only work with mass production and assembly lines and cheap transportation.

It's far cheaper to make an outpost with irregular logs and stones and such.

Unless you have a giant factory where you can process hundreds of trees per day, turning them into presorted beams and oriented strand board in useful sizes for preordained applications.  And then only if you have the means of transporting them cheaply from the forest to wherever you need them.

Then again, you get a good spellcaster to build the whole place for you.  Then again he'd probably cost as much if not more than a contractor.  Spellcasters think they're so high and mighty with their spells that warp the very fabric of reality.

One of the benefits of being a feudal lord is that you can get labor for practically nothing.  And also, you have virtually limitless resources.  So, given that and the gratuitous economics lecture (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_652.php), I declare that Amber is right and has created a wonderful feature of Furrae, and everything else based off of Die Nibelungen is wrong!

Go Amber!

All right Dev Ice attack cool. Anyway I'm glad to finally figure out that Abel is a female thanks Amber for that nugget. But I have a feeling that sniper is not dead if he or she or it has anticipated the ice attack then the enemy will teleport at that moment. We shall see what will happens next.

The random dalmation in the crowd scene who happens to resemble Xander is female.

He still knows it, but at this point I bet he's just too scared. I mean, the kid hasn't really seen any battle in his life before this.

Exactly
Abel may know magic but he's not a warrior here he's a librarian,  that's not a career that prepares one for a pitched magical battle.

Speaking as a sniper (battlefield: Galactic conquest  gotta love those deployable holo blinds) You may call it cheap but it's a perfectly legitimate combat tactic,  Snipers are usually lightly armored and armed with a high-powered but slow weapon so if we are caught in the open we're toast.  Ever try and pull off a hip shot with a sniper rifle unless you get lucky on that first shot your dead.

Besides this guy isn't a sniper.  This is an ambush yes but he's no sniper, he seems to be operating the magical equivalent of a machine gun nest.  He's pumping out a lot of fire  but it's wild an inaccurate.  If he was a true sniper these folks only warning would have come when one of them dropped dead as is Xander had enough warning to draw an arrow, and Glory had a shield going.  If he's a sniper he's an embarrassment to us all.

Xander on the other hand,  that boy was a good sniper.  Abel didn't know what hit him
Well, for one, bullets are a lot faster than balls of fire (I'm assuming, since Glory had time to see it coming and defend against it.)  Also, they're much less noticeable, I'm sure.  So  There's a big difference between a huge flaming ball of glowing-ness that you can obviously see coming, and a bullet travelling probably at least a mile in seconds.

Most RIFLE bullets travel at about 2800 Feet Per Second (30-06 150 grain bullet.)  Even a 5.56 MM NATO round is at 3250 FPS not that much faster.  That is 3/4 of a Mile a second.
