Abelitz has some quick thinking to do to keep his cover... But damnit, he just had to go thinking about things and jinxing it, didn't he? >.>
Time for Abel to either:
a) do some pretty skillful BS-ing
b) do some pretty speedy mind-reading
c) do some pretty speedy bopping-the-adventurers-on-the-head and then running away-ing
Or he could just own up. But that doesn't seem very Abel-y to me...

I instantly recognized the possibility that it could be Nitemyst upon looking at the fact of going through the archives.
But MAN, what a surprise. Never thought for a moment that Merlitz' old party would show up again. :erk
So many things I could say, yet all I can come up with is "This ought to be fun." And it looks like we'll have a few anecdotes about Merlitz's career. Or some other kind of backstory anyway.

How would Abel know to say that, though? He knows nothing about Merlitz.
Oh good, I was wondering what she meant.
And Abel could probably get out of this easily with mind-reading. Question is, is his head clear enough to think of the idea? He seems to be panicking.

Not really. I doubt Mr. Myst here's going to be giving Abel a pop quiz on how Merlitz is. I mean, how do you mindread the answer to "So, how've you been?"
*Charline hmms* Meh, Abel can pretend to be Merlitz' secret identical twin brother who took his place after Merlitz was squished by an evil dragon. They'll buy it, and Abel hates dragons so he'd be glad to pin the blame on one... likely Pyro. :3

Pretty easy. You say, ``Oh, you know,'' then give a knowing and slightly self-deprecating laugh. Then you say, ``But you! I mean, just look at you.''
Keeping quiet and letting the other guy talk could be a good defense. Or steering the converation to general all purpose meaningless small talk. The trouble there is I don't think Abel is the type to be good at small talk.
Hah, it's good to see old faces again. Oh and peoples, those are real people from Furcadia, the game Amber used to base this off of, so no, those aren't codenames, those are their actual screennames.
Here's hoping Misha aka Skirmish makes an appearance with Nitemyste and Gen.
It'll be funny seeing how Abel tries to crawl his way out of it. I personally think that they'll think he's insane from the human encounter. Abel will use this to squirm out of personal conversations aka " So how's the mom? Still got the psoriasis?" :P

Darn. With the arcs running long, I always forget that several pages go to a day. (Not that I mind, I just forget.) And actually, I think that it was the same day that he set out.

Dan finds out the day before the tour (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_673.php), and we don't know how long that letter had been in Merlitz's apartment. Of course, it's not likely that Merlitz has been gone for more than one day, since they would have noticed his absence.
But I still agree that Abel could do a quick mind-scan reading thingy :D and get out of it while he answers the easy "How are you?" questions :)
...Monty Python's flying circusssss-s-s-s...!
No, seriously. I'm sure Abel will just pull out some old hypnosis-spell. They're just adventurers, and it might be possible that Genesis doesn't know that much magic to tell it's coming beforehand.
All this requires is the typical short memory of your average resident of Los Angeles.
Even if it is your brother just say "Do I Know You?" Then you just smile and look vaguely confused to them and make them uncomfortable till they leave. BONUS points if you have a screen actors guild card. :poke
In California being shallow is an art form.
Well Mr. Cubi powers, a simple mind reading could keep up the charade well enough, even if you're not used to disguising yourself.
Abel could always play the Doppleganger card and say one of a few things
"I don't know this Merlitz your talking about, I'm Abel"
"So you know my doppleganger Merlitz, what's he like?"
I find it funny that Abel went through the painstaking process of listing, counting and numbering the things that could go wrong while impersinating someone else.

If that happens, they might try to slay him. Not that they're likely to, but it will not look good in front of the reporters.

... which means they're likely to have fairly solid mental shielding.
And Gen is a water mage, so she can counter Abel's fire empathy fairly easily. Let's not suggest that "druid and illusionist" Nitemyste might have something like that handy anyway...
Mental shielding whilst visiting a pub they've probably been hanging out at for years? I don't think so. Consider the circumstances, and I believe you will find that Abel would have the moment of surprise. As loathe as I am to admit it, were he to play his cards right he could basically toy with them.
If it were me though, I'd make sure the scene was clear and then be honest about it, for dignity's sake. It might take some explaining, but I see no reason why he shouldn't be.
try: Mental shield all the time, since you don't know when you'll be surprised by, say, a Cubi in disguise, or something....

Well, Dan didn't seem overly concerned about shields when he went out on his "If it moves, hit it till it stops" missions...
And Fa'Lina hinted that at least externally applied shields don't hold a long time, so they either got a dedicated mage who constantly re-applies the shields, or they somehow managed to master it themselves.
Of course, surface thoughts can be hidden among garbage (I think I noticed it in Aary's LJ... but we've seen it happening in canon, too), even though that sounds more like an action that requires active focus, so they might only do that when they sense danger from a mindreader.
But I guess we're thinking wayyyyy too complicated again.
They're both mages - water and illusion. Well, ok, so NiteMyste is a druid, but it's close enough.
Now, if they were a fighter, like Dan, I'd expect the mental shield thing to slip, but mages? Surely mages learn to protect themselves?

Yes. IIRC from Amber's past comments, mental shields for Beings generally take the form of mental distractions as was done in "Dr. Who - Invasion of Time". Since that takes effort to maintain unless the Being is actually insane, it's probably not something you'd generally do in a pub.
As for magic, I'm not sure if water mages learn that kind of stuff. Abel will probably tell us in due course.

Absolutely not. But I've witnessed too many people who aren't, unlike me. So I presume, based on past experience and people's attitudes, that it's more likely that they do not walk around with mental shields all the time. And if you can prove I'm wrong, then I'll retract my statement and formulate another point.

As for the mind shielding, bear in mind that the classic 'cubi approach is to read your target's mind and seduce them by warping into their dream date. Aary manages to break into Merl's mind in #217, and he's an adventurer and a mage too...

It's Abel. *points back to that one comic where he painted the room while Dan was sleeping* In his many years, I'm quite sure he legitimately thought up an enumerated list. Partially while watching other cubi take on other identities and encounter such problems (could be part of why he doesn't like to do it), and partially out of boredom.

I wonder if they will stay long? Probably not... Amber might have to make profiles for them otherwise. :P
I think they are there for the sole purpose of starting the fuse and let loose an explosion of fire and mayhem to the Lost Lake Inn and Dan will be the one will get all the blame for this.
Yeah, Dan's probably going to get blamed for this by Alexi once she gets back. Juts like in the first Twinks arc.
In the short term, meanwhile, I can see Nightmyste getting up after and blasting Merbel. And thus starts the fireworks...just as Danielle and the reporter come back down.

They may or may not know who Dan is (would this not better be discussed in today's thread?). Depends which parts his reputation as a hero extends to.
As mentioned way back, he ran around slaying monsters and saving kingdoms even though he had wings himself (which meant he was most likely a Creature). The counterargument then was that you don't really care
what is saving you so long as they do save you.
I'd be surprised if someone didn't suspect him of being a 'cubi back when he was a hero..
