Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, died earlier today at the age of 44 after being stung by a stingray, of all things. This is the guy that let Fear Snakes (most venomous snake on Earth) crawl around on his face, 80 miles away from any medical facilities. It's too bad, even if he was crazy, he was a cool guy.
Steve Irwin? Dead? Here I thought he was immortal, and thats why he did this crazy stuff.
Seriously though, thats quite upsetting :\ As Silly as he was, he was cool. Andya gotta respect someone with the guts that that guy had to do those things.
Yeah. Stingray through the heart. What the hell. It still seems like a crazy internet prank to me, it's so surreal. But I know it isn't.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060904/ap_on_en_tv/obit_irwin news article on yahoo.com confrims it.
Crikey.
got confirmation from Queensland Police Service. Queensland Ambulance Service also has a record on it. eesh.

saw this on the news this morning,
thats a real shame, he's done so much for the re-education of people about animals.
Farewell, Steve... we'll miss you. I was a big fan of his and how he brought so much happiness and awareness to the world about its creatures.
Well seems like the famous Steve Irwin the Croc Hunter has passed on due what it seems a manta ray has claimed his life...Well I hope most you down under peeps her can coope soon but dont worry his high spirited level will live on and RJ I hope you will be okay too :rj
I read about this a few minutes ago. He died doing what he loved. The world will surely miss such an enthusiastic conservationist and wildlife expert, as will I. Farewell Steve.
I'll definitely miss him... I had been hoping one day to go watch one of his croc shows at his zoo. :<
wasn't it a stingray, not a manta ray? They're quite a bit different.
He's only the third person in Australia to be killed by one, IIRC.
It was on the news this morning. A sad day for Australia, the world, and environmental conversationalists.
He died doing what he loved most: telling people about the natural world.
My condolences to his family.
It's sad, I loved his show, No I adored his show. I feel sorry for his wive and shilderen that he left behind.
:mowsad
Do we really need FOUR topics on this? No! I've merged this in with the other topics. Try and controll your sadness people and stop cluttering the forum.

Well, we ARE talking about Steve Irwin here. Does all that Irwin-ness even FIT in only 1 thread? ;)
It does now ;)
Yes, boss. :-)
He was larger than life. I don't see how that can fit into one little thread...
Well, he'd only be on every single forum on the internet by now..
He survived the fae but not the ray, lets all hope we'll be ok. (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_404.php)

Almost ironic that it wasn't a crocodile, but still.
Some people don't know the meaning of the word "fear".
I remember, I used to watch "Crocodile Hunter".
Could have been worse. Better a swift and painless death, really. :/
I heard it got him in the chest
I liked him.
There was a lot he had to say and teach in regards to animals and his showmanly ways meant he got his message across better than most documentaries. He might've seemed somewhat insane (aren't we all?) but he had a purpose, a number of them in fact and he was a good old chap.
I'll miss him and I'd say he died too young but at least he died conveying those ideals that were so important to him and thus, died not a pointless death.
Very well put, all.
Steve Irwin was a great naturalist, and his love for animals and for what he did always showed every time people watched him, always enthusiastic about it all. In the name of aspiring biologists everywhere, he'll surely be missed, and we can hope that people coming into his field of work will learn from his example of dedication.
The thing that struck me the hardest was the irony of it all. He died doing what he loved most. But it was because of an animal who was only defending itself...not out for food...nothing like a croc or a snake...
He was one of those you always jokingly said would never die.
And every time you hear about it happening, it's like a punch to the gut.
Rest in peace, Crocodile Hunter. :rose :tired
dane cook must feel ashamed for making fun of him
He was a crazy mofo, and I mean that in the best possible way. Farewell, Steve, I miss you.
How unfortunate. He had some kids.
What I don't get is how he got attacked by something that usually.. well.. doesn't attack.
Ok......the barb came up and stabbed him in his chest, subsequently his heart, when diving into the northern part of australia....the ocean or sea, i dunno......the news just said that
I know what it is and where it hit him.. -.-;
i was just stating what i knew^^
I keep thinking about the episode of south park with GorignaK...or was it Steve. Anyway Cartman spent the whole episode following around the Crock hunter...who was hunting a prehistoric human from almost three years ago (now six) and they were planning to do something naughty with his bung hole.
gorak/steve. or something.

I don't have any confirmation as to how it actually happened, Aridas, but I have a hypothesis.
The accident occurred in shallow ocean water.
According to this article Steve was stung when he "came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart."
http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=232667>1=7703
My fellow zoology freaks and I talked about this freak accident (which was labeled as a stingray "attack" in the linked article, poor Steve could be turning in his grave for that one) and one student mentioned that it is highly unlikely that a stingray would be able to exert enough force to poke its tail through the chest and pierce the heart, on its own.
My hypothesis is that the poor man lost his balance and fell face-first onto the stingray, and the force of his fall allowed the tail to pierce deeply enough. It's pretty easy to lose your footing in those waves.
I'm a big Steve Irwin fan. I've followed his career ever since I first heard about the wacky guy who was wrestling crocodiles in khaki shorts. His teachings on the behavior of crocodiles will probably influence the world for quite some time, since he practically shifted the entire world's view of those animals from mindless man-eating killing machines to cranky, territorial hunters.
Like Aisha said, it's ironic that Steve died teaching people about animals, but not by being mauled by a crocodile (Take Aggro for example, who'll probably eventually miss his annoying pet food-giver despite himself) or bitten by a sea snake. He was taken out by an animal that is not known for killing, or even attacking.
Farewell, Steve Irwin. You shall be missed. :rose

"...Next week we'll look for more of these beautiful creatures, so we can learn more about them by pissing them off immensly" :p
Is it just me or is it ironic that, instead of being killed by all these deadly creatures he toyed around with, he got killed kinda unexpectedly? :U
Isn't it ironic that we've already been over this like 5 times? :U

No it's not. It's redundant. :3
I can't say that I know exactly what to say, but I do know I'm sorry to see him go. I wasn't a huge fan of his, but when I did see him in some show or another, I liked him. He always seemed so cheerful, or at least optimistic, and either way like a really nice guy. I don't think there will ever be another one quite like him.
been watching this alot on the news and i am upset alot as also an aussie - :( australia has lost a great icon ( i have not been able to stop crying over this yet :(
Steve is dead. Long live Steve.
As has been said - he will be missed. And that's the greatest tribute I think he could have, that people will miss him. :-/
The fact that Steve Irwin cried when he found a crocodile dead says a lot about him to me. There's a clip on youtube of a crocodile he knew for a long time that had passed away, but there was another episode where he was hired to catch a large gator that had wandered in to human civilization. He went out in the night and found it shot dead, and mourned for it.
I honestly can't understand people bashing him on the grounds of animal rights; apparently there's quite a few PETA-ish people in the community that have that opinion of him.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/09/04/irwin.death/index.html
heh, and apparently the guy ended up pulling out the serrated barb out himself before he died.
I wonder if Ms. Teri would agree to the state funeral...
They say that they have footage of what happened, but it's too graphic to show. In all truth, I would be horrified if they did air it. I was upset enough when they decided to play the tape of the emergency call... not to mention how a current affairs show decided to do a whole story on Bindy and how she could suceed him. It seemed okay at first until they started to deeply analyse how she'd react to all this... unneeded...
The outside of Australia Zoo is covered in flowers and khaki shirts. I wish I could go visit and pay my respects as well.
I would also like to promote this site, set up for those who would like to make a donation to the Wildlife Warriors: http://www.wildlifewarriors.org.au/
Those in America should be able to make a donation to the Crikey fund which will be set up soon.
*sniffle*
Bye-Bye Steve :mowsad

what can I say, guilty in that I was too lazy to read the previous pages :F
Well dont worry people liek remaking things ;)
Quite a sad day indeed both for his family and the world of conservationism. A great man was truly lost, the work he did has immense value, he will truly be missed.
