Losing your dad is never easy,  but I can't imagine what the girls will do now his protection is gone

Not to mention we can't really be sure of their brother's true intentions from what was said and what was shown.

Dying of old age is also a rare thing in their society (assuming that is what happened), which adds extra problems, Matilda's father could be thousands of years old and a central to the colony's  way of life.
