Alright, so I made the thanksgiving picture and it fails. Happy Belated Thanksgiving!
Kumiko: KumikoTsumi
Kipiru: Kipiru
Arroyo: Arroyo Milori
E: e_voyager
Cain: justacritic
Zora: VAE
And here it is! (11/25/11) (http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/329/8/5/thanksgiving_drawing_by_sinxasin-d4ha2xz.jpg) Behold, the epic fail! Comment on the fail please!
P.S I hate coloring. :cry
It's not a fail :yeahthat Your stile is just still unrefined. I actually like your depiction of Kipiru :mowhappy Beyond the obvious need of straightening out lines and applying more precision in render, the poses are actually pretty well done. You just need more practice. One question- do you draw directly on the computer or do you do pencil first?
Very piece of coal has a chance to shine as a diamond with the right amount of pressure and time. Just invest in some time studying anatomy and such and you will go a long way.
...Why do I have wings? : D

Cause you're next on the menu :mwaha
That's actually pretty neat stuff, especially given your age.
For one thing, there's nothing grossly deformed I can see there - you got stuff like the heads of the different species down right, which is a thing I sometimes just bloody can't do.
Sis has her strong points, which she has refined through constant sketching of anime characters, that being said I've told her she still needs more practice on hands. And Kipiru she draws on paper first, then I scan it for her, then I motivate her to do lineart or at least try to, and if she doesn't she colors it in directly. And why is there a weird block man next to Cain?
i'd have to say it's very decent. i like how you were able to group the characters together like that. E seems to be wondering how her got a glass of alcohol instead of tea or motor oil which is right up his ally for unexpected surprises happening to him. did you ever see him at the hatter tea party? it was a scene much like this
Good news and bad news...
Bad news first: Perspective and anatomy are essential skills, and they take a lot of time and effort to learn.
Good news: All it takes is time and effort. As long as you make the effort, it's only a matter of time.
Your characters have a sense of liveliness and personality. There's good body language there, particularly with e, and even though the expressions are simplified stylizations, they still express well. The proportions generally look okay, too.

I really need to finish that guid/tutorial/thing I've been working on. Bluh.
Hmm, yes I do need more practice on the hands, they always look too fat, too thin or just plain...off....I need to study that anatomy book more. But I stare at the first page and fall asleep whenever I do... Thanks for the comments though...
To Arroyo Milori-Well, you see...my brother gave me the idea that I paid your character and Cain to do odd-jobs. You're job was a mascot, and therefore Arroyo has clip on wings!
To Justacritic: It's a flamethrower box thingy, I don't know...blame Pokemon for giving me the idea. >.>
Well now that I'm done this, I got two contests to enter and Kipiru's drawing to finish...
I'll be posting any other art on here too i guess...
Well! You're much better than I was at your age, but what are you using to colour? I ask because of the white areas around those brown wings. Depending on what you're using you'll need to turn up the "tolerance" of the fill tool, I use Photoshop and usually hover between 50 and 90.
Or you'll need to touch up the colouring by hand, which I also do in pointy areas like that. It helps if you have the lineart on its own separate layer, makes tweaking the colouring so much easier.
To eliminate those white bits entirely, as well as doing the above I usually work at crazy-high res so when I shrink it down for posting on the web they disappear.
Depending on your setup, it doesn't take too long to fix colouring like that, and it's always worthwhile.
There is another colouring technique which I use, and I believe Amber does as well. What you seem to be doing - and what I think Merlin does as well - is to have the lines fuzzy, either because they've been scanned or because they were drawn on tablet with a soft tool.
An alternative technique which I use is to use a threshold filter to convert the lines into black and white with no intermediate levels.
This allows you to use the flood-fill without any messing around afterwards, except for the odd separate region. The downside is that it looks kind of blocky at full-res, but scaling down with linear interpolation anti-aliases it and it looks pretty decent.
http://www.project-future.org/stuff/things/pf183_5.png
Artists who work with soft lines usually seem to draw the lines on a top layer and then colour on a layer below, but that is rather too fiddly for my taste.
This was done with colour-under: We were trying for a different style for the flashback, so I used the original pencils and converted it to an alpha layer. I could have done a less sloppy job of colour-isolation but I was deliberately doing that for artistic reasons.
http://www.project-future.org/stuff/things/pf165_7.jpg (650k!)
One thing to mention - the above method quite often results in small, pixel or two sized cuts in the lines, especially if your pencil work is as horrible as mine. Therefore don't be surprised if you have to seal up quite a lot of the lines made due to fill suddenly seeping out.
Pushing the threshold to higher levels decreases the likelihood of it quite a lot, that is, if it doesn't introduce artefacts (i.e. if the drawing is well clean)
I know , this might be trivial, but well, there's a reason why tech support folks tend to ask "Is it plugged in."
Er, well...I don't really understand how to do all of that, I just use Paint Tool SAI to make a lineart and and then I color it. I never actually messed around with the extra tools...
Hooray, I finished Kipiru's request! :D I still suck at coloring though, and the background was supposed to show some sort of gothic store but it turned out horrifying...

Anyway....
I think of Kipiru as a calm guy :) But nobody would be calm if you've been mistaken as a crossdresser 16 times...
Shopkeeper: So...I guess this is your hobby?
Kipiru: I'm just buying something for a friend!!!
Kumiko: Heheh...
I hope Kipiru doesn't take any offense...it was just a joke.. :<
Someone help me get some humor...o_o

AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Thank you so much Kumiko- this made me laugh so loud I probably scared the neighbours. I love this picture and it's backstory- that is so what Kipiru would do! Great job! And your coloring isn't all that bad- it's just flat and that isn't technically a flaw. Concentrate on figure depiction, coloring will evolve on the way.
Phew, I'm glad you liked it! :D And guess what...I GOT A TABLET!!! :D Hopefully now I will be able to make better pictures! IM SO HAPPY I COULD JUMP OFF A CLIFF!!! :D

Mmmm, congrats on your tablet, they are very fun to use once you get used to using them! But they are not magic draw-better machines. They do help speed things along if you get really good at them though (and lol soooo useful if you just have a laptop and no mouse, I use mine for everything)

Learning the tools already at your disposal however, is a good method for improving your art. I definitely suggest messing around with the tools. I've never coloured in SAI myself, so I can't give you any tips for that in particular, sorry.
I guess I'll read more tutorials and screw around with the tools when I have the chance...
Still, tablets must be the best invention ever made... :mowhappy
Pretty much anything you can do with a tablet you can do without one. But if it helps you draw faster, it'll help you get more practise in - always a plus.
Yep! ^_^ And maybe I'll be able to color better :D
Quick note on proprotions for hands: in general, the distance from the wrist to the first knuckles is equal to the width of the palm, the width of the wrist is equal to the width of the palm minus the the pinkie. The first knuckle of the thumb, when held close to the palm, ends up about half way between the wrist and the knuckles. I'll see if I can do a redline of Kip's Request with a few suggestions.

A tool is only as good as your skill with it... but they do make a lot of things simpler to do, and they're awfully versatile tools. What model is it?
I use my tablet exclusively for colouring. I like to do as much as I can on paper, which is why I have this incomprehensible love for india ink and dip pens, but colouring is the one resounding exception.
I'd like to see your pencil art some time, by the way. Don't be afraid to post it.

The model Sis and I bought is a Bamboo Connect pen CTL470 version, and she said that it was around $99 at Staples. It's size is 10.9*6.9*.4 inches with an active area size of 5.8*3.6 inches, it's not that bad for the price I think.
okay, like anything a tablet is an investment. I'm going to be the mean sod here and simply state "don't" at least, not yet anyways.
why? People seem to ALWAYS be under this mistaken impression that a tablet can make you better, it doesn't. more efficient? yes. but better? that takes practice. Your money would be better spent on standard art supplies like paper, pencils, pens. and a buttload of practice. a reasonable mechanical pencil, a wad of standard photocopy/xerox paper, and a white vinyl eraser should be all you need to really kick off things.
You're still young, you've got a lot to learn, invest in the things that'll let you learn from people whose actual profession is to teach you these things, let them help you build a foundation with which to build upon your own, unique style.
I've held my tongue until i saw folks throwing tablet specs and tools at you, when all you really need is paper. pencil. eraser. Everything else can wait until then, don't try and get everything right at once, work on one aspect, then move forward.

So Kumiko has a tablet. That's pretty awesome. Congrats, Kumiko. We can either berate her for this awesome event, or give advice on how to make better use of it, once she starts posting arts.
I'll mostly post on the weekends....I understand that even though I have a tablet, it won't make my art look better....(although the coloring would probably be neater....) so....yeah :3

I wouldn't say Turnksy *is* being a "mean sod" so much as... realistic. Maybe a tad pessimistic, but it's good to have both sides expressed. Tablets are a great tool but they're *just* tools. In my experience, learning to use a tablet was like learning to draw all over again. I hated it. After a couple months I put mine away and didn't touch it for years. Drawing while looking in a different direction is disconcerting at first and can be frustrating. That said, different people probably have different learning curves. *shrug*
Personally, I have found that it's best to learn on paper and then get a tablet. I love my tablet and drawing on it, but I *still* can't sketch well on it and usually sketch on paper. I use the tablet for inking and coloring mostly.
But this is just my experience, and everyone is different. If you put enough effort and practice into it, anything is possible. I *don't* recommend putting your tablet away in frustration, in any case. ;) As others have said, you've got a good start, and you're only going to get better.
^_^ I agree, after all...everyone has their own opinions....I can sketch easily with the tablet but I can't seem to ink well on scans....I guess I'll have to practice more.... :)

So you made that whole post to pick apart one thing that he said. Even though the rest of his post wasn't actually mean at all, you decided to take that and just use it to rant at him. Great post. Quality even. I applaud you and your master work. Now don't do it again.
I will just add - speaking as a moderator - that this is a thread started by someone new to the forum who is looking to improve their art.
It would be disappointing and frankly, very inconsiderate towards Kumiko if it were to turn into yet another spat between Whitefox and Turnsky... or anyone else for that matter.

You really shouldn't invest in a tablet, not until you have the basics down on pen and paper. You never know if you won't be able to make it in the art world and suddenly want a career change in your college days.
I assume you are going to route of "anime anthropomorphic" route, which shows the laziness of actually learning to draw what the said animal's skull. This is usually counter-argued with the typical "The character would look ugly if I tried to do that." But then you would be breaking one of the golden rules of drawing anthros: Make them look like the animal that they are intended to look like. How can you tell if the character is suppose to be a anteater if they don't have traits that make them look like a anteater?
And then there's the stylization. Oh boy, if you are expected to get anywhere in improvement gotta ditch the style you are going for now. Learn to bake the cake first (foundation) then, you can add frosting (style). A well baked cake will taste good without frosting, and even if the frosting is nasty you can scrape it off. A cake that has frosting slathered on it and isn't a delicious cake, there's no helping it.
If your trying to get by just by stylization, I would scrap the style you are trying to go for and draw from real life. Stylization comes last.
Okay. The tablet discussion is now closed.
Also, let's remember that this is a young artist, and CONSTRUCTIVE, POLITE CRITICISM is required in this thread.
Or I start banning people. No warnings.

i see where you're going with this, but i do have to ask Kumiko here: do you have a scanner? if so fill a page with just character sketches, both face and body shots, differing angles, the whole dealio. I want to get an idea on how you work, see how we can take things from there. :3

Alrighty then I'll practice until I become pro! :D
I have to admit sis can do pretty good work when she puts her mind to it...
YOU HEAR ME SIS GET TO WORK NOW I'M STILL WAITING FOR YOUR COLORING, HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO COLOR IN OUR COMIC IF I HAVE NOTHING TO BASE UPON? great now my throat is hoarse :mowsad
But I dun like coloring :<
I like your attitude, you show great promise, young padawan. :P
regardless of the style, most, if not all character art have generally the same structure characteristics, essentially you start out with a stick figure and build upon that. Manga stylings or Western, they pretty much start out the same.
Fundamentally speaking, they aren't too far removed from eachother, that and as i mentioned before, a manga styling is about as unique as the artist drawing it, so worry about the fundamentals first, and you can pick our brains along the way and see about developing your own stylings in the meantime. :3
and as for colouring? i'll see if we can't help you with that either. :)
Okay then ^_^ Time to get cracking at those anatomy books... -stares at the pile and whimpers- :ape
wow love the dragon and the hydra... i've always had a soft spot for mythic beings myself. it's interesting to see a hydra with actual legs. i like the concept
Thanks, I try my best....and now I must go color something or my bro will smite me -_-
I am depressed and now in no mood to draw anymore. My mom asked me to draw her a profile picture for face book so I did and she couldn't make up her mind about the color of the hair and ect. Then after 16 times of changing the hair color I asked her what color she wanted again and she said, "I don't know...to be truthful it looks ugly," And then I asked, "What does? The hair color?" and then she said... "No, the whole person looks ugly," So...basically she does not appreciate my artwork and instead thinks it's ugly. Now I feel strange when I want to draw... :cry
*wince* Okay, that's not cricket.
Hope you get some time to restabilise yourself, there.
That sort of reaction sucks... (and well, i guess it's exactly what i'd got if I ever showed anything to anyone of my family) but then, it's a lot better than dishonest praise.
Oh, jeez... that can't be easy to hear. My dad saw an MLP drawing in my sketchbook once, and he looked at me funny for days. So, I can sympathize.
I know how much of a blow it can be to hear such things, especially from someone whose opinion matters to you, but try not to let it get you down. What really matters is whether or not you want to be an artist. If you want it, do it. Skill is only a matter of time and effort.
For what it's worth, I like your work: your dragon and hydra were simply fantastic.
now see, criticism like that, while harsh can be taken in a positive light if you want it to be. Think of it less like a verbal beatdown and more like a slap in the face with a silk glove.
A Challenge if you will. If you can push yourself to rise above it, to work on it more, you'll be all the better for it.
Everyone's been there, the trick is to use it to drive yourself forward, always progressing.
What Turnsky said, strife to do better! A lot of people don't understand how much an artist's work mean to them and shoot it down without so much as a thought. I've learned that they do not do that out of bad intentions, so try to swallow this, as hard as it may be and just keep going till you are good enough for them. Once my parents, who never really paid any attention to my drawing skills told me to my face I can't even draw humans(at that time I was all about robots and aliens), so I sat down and drew for them a few sketches of ordinary human beings doing ordinary human things plus a nice sunset so there would be no more doubt about my skill- it worked!
A little bit of a break isn't necessarily a bad thing. Every now and then, a break can let you sit back and contemplate your art, and allow you to take a step back from things so that you can see more clearly what the next step towards improvement is.
As for your mother, while it may really suck to hear something like that, especially from someone as close as your own parent, it should be taken with a grain of salt. It may not necessarily be critique, but I doubt she said something so hurtful to make you want to quit. In the long run, though, she doesn't control your art or the amount of pleasure you get out of it. Neither does your brother, or your friends, or anyone on these forums, or anyone else period. The happiness you get out of art comes from you, and if you can learn to create art because the process of being artistic brings your joy, and not because you might get compliments or some sort of attention, then remarks like that won't sting as badly, and it will even be easier to take constructive criticism (which can also really sting at times, especially if you've worked really hard on a piece!)
When you're ready to return to art, I'm sure that the people on these forums will be glad to welcome you back.
Ouch i'm sorry to hear that. i know how artist are about there art. i still get sensitive about comments to some of my weaving and pottery projection. I hope you feel better soon. just relax and enjoy the holiday season for a while. like Nyil says a break is normal.

Kumiko belongs to me!
Cain belongs to Justacritic, my brother. :)
Zora belongs to VAE. :)
Kipiru belongs to Kipiru o-o
E belongs to EVoyager. :)
Merry Christmas All!
Kumiko- OH MY GAWDS, A FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST EDWARD ELRIC PLUSHIE! MUST GET! -drags Kipiru along-
Kipiru- So as I was saying--- WAGH!? -gets dragged to anime store-
Cain- Wait, KUMIKO! I WANNA GO TOOOOOO!
Zora- Ahahahahhaha! XD
E- I feel festive! :D
I think the coloring is a bit better this time...less white specks :D
*lawls*
Neat.
I like the way you do facial expressions. They are .. expressive.
Not sure if that's a compliment but thanks. :D Anime characters have big eyes to show expression, so I guess I just caught on...o-o

Thank you! >:3 It's amazing what tutorials can do for me... I still think I might've made her too thin and too muscle-y at the same times...and it sort of looks like she might get knocked over by a leaf...the hair was fun to color though...
I wouldn't worry too much about her proportions and overall size. I know plenty of people who are very skinny with a lot of tone to their muscles, so it looks fine to me. Interesting that African American month inspired you to draw her; she looks quite pale. The offset positioning of the drawing as a whole is interesting, though the way her shoulders are facing make it look more like she's hanging from something during a windy day instead of being pulled off screen (assuming that was your intention). On a side note, because of that, when I saw her hair my first thought was "I mustache you a question". ^^; The pose overall seems kind of awkward, albeit possible, since her back and shoulders seem to point towards her right (our left) while her hips (and thus legs) seem to face the "camera" due to the fact that you can see a fairly large portion of her left leg. However, the eyes are very expressive, and I like the fact that you denoted the collar bone. Hope this all helps!
It's good to see you back Kumiko. also what's steal me away? i've not see that.
Thank you Inumo! I'll be sure to take more notice in the future. And e_Voyager, Steal Me Away isn't actually a movie..hehe..african slaves used to sing a song called "Steal Away" that indicated they were about to run away...or that's what my reading teacher told me... :mowwink

Reo Khan!
Shinigami!
"If you want to die, step forward"
Meh, it was actually a sketch at first, but I decided to color it.
HE HAS TEH LIGHTNING POWAHS!!! :mwaha
So, it's been WAY too long. School's almost over...and I have two new artworks...but they're for contests. Anyway, here's a quick look at them.
Winry Rockbell and the Ishvalan War from Fullmetal Alchemist!!!

For United Nations...there is this contest about nukes, so here's mother nature...?
Oh, and the description for this one...
Her hair clashes with fire and water. Her eyes are like the sun. As she holds Earth deed in her arms like a mother, she glares at the history of the nukes. The death it has caused and the pain. But deep inside, she knows. She knows the Nukes will be destroyed, and will wait for the day it will.
But I digress, nukes can be used for good too! (think space exploration, a relatively clean energy source if we can contain it.. ect...) Humans just have a tendency to make the worst out of a good thing.
(also they stopped a world war 3 from breaking out, but that's debatable)
But about the art, your use of colors is very vibrant and imaginative, and you are REALLY good at drawing hair. (you earned yourself a new fan :boogie)
Ignuus - not nukes as such, you are thinking nuclear energy.
However, the soviets have used nukes for mining and digging before, as I have read, and now that is bloody awesome.
Kumiko, I like the stuff as well, and second what was said about the colours. One thing - the earth seems to have a little too much, and differently organised continents - didn't recognise it at first.
Thank you! Hair has always been my strong suit...? I just realized my art teacher told me to fix the Earth but I forgot...shoot, thanks for reminding me. I shall go fix it now!!!

Have you ever heard of the (original) orion project? (also known as nuclear pulse propulsion) It (basically) consisted of throwing nuclear bombs behind the spacecraft every second, (it was proven to work using a mock model, the craft would NOT have exploded) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3Lxx2VAYi8
Now, a trial design of this spacecraft could have been crewed by 200 people, and been several thousand tons, and could have gone to mars and BACK in 4 weeks. (current FASTEST rockets would be 12 months, and substantially smaller)
However, it would be capable of so much more. Using materials available in the 1960-s, you could build a spacecraft that weighs 800 million tons, and has a carry capacity exceeding the massive carrier ships in water. IT would also be capable to accelerate to6-10% the speed of light.
At that speed we could reach a star WITHIN a human lifetime, and keep in mind this is with materials available in 1960.... This is known as the ONLY method of interstellar travel available to us (currently)
The only main problem with this is that it would need to use nukes to get off the ground too... Which would (hypothetically if launched in the middle of a massive uninhabited area) still cause enough radiation to kill 3 people.... But Overall there are things we use everyday that kill way more.
Also the fact that the nuclear test ban treaty does not allow the detonation of nukes above ground and in space might be a problem, not to mention the fact that any sattalite in it's way would be toast, and it may cause large emp to nearby sattelites too.
Anyhow this would be a very..... Human way of travel :U
Back to the drawing: I don't think the earth really needs to look like earth, it just needs to symbolize it, as the entire drawing is already full of symbols..
Anyway sis nice use of a film reel in her hand depicting human history, that's not an easy effect to bring out.

OTL The arms are too short. QAQ
I thought maybe I'd ask for more anatomy advice before I made this a full artwork. Anyone wanna critique this blinding sketch? D:

For my roleplay group...I think I did okay on the wolf, seeing how I never drew one or studied one before... hehe... :mowmeep
The muzzle is a bit short, but that's the only thing which really strikes me as being off. Ears could be longer. I do love the fluffy look, though.
Longer snout and ears? Duly noted :3
