Amber. Take advice from someone that this has happened to before: Do NOT touch ANYTHING. It will only make things worse.

...depending on where you got the glasses, you might just be able to get the frames replaced.

...however, if you feel that it's time to get a full replacement, I suggest you try and get your glasses online. You would still have to get an eye exam elsewhere, but you end up saving quite a bit of cash. But, you have to wait like a month for them to ship to ya...

I had similar problems with my glasses. My one lens kept falling out. Even the slightest touch made it pop out. I ended up lossing it somewhere in my room. Luckly, my next eye doctor appointment is soon. Although, I lost the lens a few months ago. I've been wearing my old pare.

Let's just hope you luck gets better Amber.

I remember my next to last pair of glass eyeglasses. I came in from the cold to a nice warm room, and one of the lenses exploded when they warmed up. The glasses were still under warranty, so I went and got them replaced... and the same thing happened to my last pair of glass eyeglasses.

Worst glasses story for me was 2 pairs ago, opened them up when I woke up and one of the arms snapped off.  Right between the hinge and the screw holding the lens in the frame.  Life without glasses sucks.

Hope everything works out, Amber, and make sure to get Mason fixed soon!

I've had that happen to me - the glasses breaking while cleaning them thing. Not fun at all, even if you have an old pair sitting around (which I do, being the sort who hates to throw out anything).

I've also had lenses fall out because the screws holding them in place worked loose. Even less fun, especially if (like me) you're half-blind without them, and trying to find a tiny screw in carpet while half-blind...

Amber not only have all the things that you've mentioned happenned to me before but about 90% (save people's arms dropping off but I'm sure its only a matter of time) have happenned this week! We seem to be suffering from the same run of bad luck! My glasses broke yesterday and I had to buy a new keyboard on Monday because most of the keys were irrepairably jammed (will teach me not to type when eating messy fajitas  :sweatdrop)

Either that I'm simply jinxing you with MY bad luck! After all I did join very recently right around the same time the problems started? *le gasp*  :U

In any event I have nothing but sympathy. Fortunately for me I got my glasses from a very nice place that will repair them free of charge (mostly coz I'm on the dole) and if I have to get new ones.... also free. Pity I don't know your prescription or I could try and get you a pair  :hug

Dear god I hate that >_o  My vision only extends a foot in front of me without my glasses, so trying to find that damn screw is near impossible.  If it wasn't for the fact that I'm the only one in my apt with a drivers license I would always just say screw it and make my room mate take me to wal-mart to get them fixed...

I've also had my last glasses break at the center of the nose bridge while cleaning them...the shocking thing was that they're flexon brand glasses and shouldn't do that.

Also, the right lens of my glasses pops out...a lot.  Fortunately, the little screw that holds it in place has always stayed in the frame and could be easily screwed back in place.  It's mostly because I fall asleep with my glasses on and roll around all over them in my sleep.

Anyway, that's why I always carry a repair kit with a few back-up screws, a mini-screwdriver, and a mini-magnifying-glass in my wallet at all times, because I never know when it's going to happen again.

However, I really hope my glasses don't break at the bridge again, since neither duct tape nor transparent tape was effective in holding it together (the bridge is curved) and my walking vibrations were enough to shake the patch job apart with my last pair, sigh.

Also, that break happened around the time of my final exams last semester...talk about a bad omen, but I still did okay.

Yeah, same here, and I live alone. Although keeping an old pair handy helps - either you can cannibalise the frames for replacement screws, or you can wear the old pair to see well enough to drive to the nearest optician.

I had a monitor go "pfft" and stop working with no warning whatever once. Which was annoying, since I was surfing the net (on dial-up) at the time. I did have a spare, but the spare was so old that it would only support 800 x 600, and had no sound (after this, I bought a set of powered speakers, which I still use today). At first, I though the old monitor had quit as well - all I got were lines across the screen; after some fiddling and starting Windows in safe mode, did I figure out the problem.

Yes, tape doesn't work too well with metal frames. Interestingly, it was nearly always the right lens that would fall out, for some reason.

Also interesting is that since I started wearing the semi-rimless style frames, I've never had a problem with lenses falling out.
Title: Re: 14/08/09 DMFA#Filler STOP FALLING APART!
Post by: ChaosMageX on August 14, 2009, 10:45:09 AM
I think semi-rims are a bit better because they aren't held in by those fragile little screws.  Instead, they're permanently held in by high tension wires that are welded (I think) to the rest of the frame, which is why semi-rim and rimless glasses are so much more expensive.

I can't wait for the price of the new laser surgery to come down.  I think the new surgery cuts your cornea like a fresnel lens instead of temporarily slicing it in half and cutting it below, which could be traumatically dislodged and blind you later in life.

As for me, I haven't had a problem with my glasses since I bought them last November. Though I have spilled coffee over my keyboard, which ordinarily wouldn't be too huge of a problem except that I have a laptop...

Okay, seriously now.  I apologize to you and anyone else who took my pathetic stab at humor seriously.  In the future I will attempt to phrase things better so that people aren't as likely to take offense at what I say.

In truth, I actually like Canada a lot.  I consider it one of the safe havens to retreat to if the USA truly goes down the political toilet.

And, regarding my comments on health care, they were based around some figures I heard on Lou Dobbs a few nights ago, figures  having to do current average life spans and and percent income costs of health care for the USA, Canada, and various European countries.  Right now I am attempting to look up those figures so that I can post them here, but I probably won't find.

Again, I apologize for making such assumptions based on figures I saw on television.  Really, one's health care doesn't just depend on the government, but how well insured you are and/or whether or not you come from a well-to-do family that can afford above average health care.

I do remember one thing, though, and that was the fact that in some countries, like the Netherlands, it is required by law for every person to have health insurance, and those countries appear to be doing well in general health.  Again, I need to attempt to locate figures to verify this, but these too may indeed be highly controversial.

our healthcare system is far from perfect (god knows i know) but it heavily subsidizes medications for those below certain income thresholds, and even then you can get a rebate on some of the higher priced stuff, doctors appointments (those aren't bulk billed) and whatnot.

being on unemployment benefits means i only haveta pay 5.30 for prescription medications.

the glasses i got were heavily subsidized by medicare, and what i got donations for via kind folks was what i hadta pay above what medicare was paying for..

that said, we do pay for the medicare system via taxes and whatnot.

http://medicare.gov.au/

i'm more curious to how it stacks up against the medicare systems of other countries, personally.

You're right about the NHS allowing private insurance as an option, but you're wrong about the proposed US system being the same.

If you listen closely, they say, in very carefully chosen words, that you will be allowed to keep "you current health insurance".  Unfortunately, for people who want to make ANY changes, like getting better insurance, or getting any insurance if you don't  happen to have it right now, you're out of luck.  You have to get the government plan, no choice, no options.

Given this "any changes and you lose it" provision, private insurance will disappear pretty quickly for everyone.

Given statements that it is hoped that the competition will cause private insurers to offer better plans, it would appear that they expect many people to go to private plans.  I have a hard time in trusting comments from people who come up with statements that Hawking would be dead if he had to use the British public health system.  Or when the press somehow converts a clause stating that the insurance companies should facilitate rapid electronic payments to doctors into a statement that the government will have access to your private bank accounts.

There is one, very telling reason not to believe the people pushing the government-run health plan:

If it is going to be such a great plan, why not let people CHOOSE, like responsible adults, whether they want to be part of it or not?  If it turns out to cost less, and give better results than private plans, great!  If not, the current system would still exist as a backup.

But no, having people make choices about their most personal health decisions is not what these people want.  Just imagine the kinds of power that will be demanded, for "the best of reasons" of course, over everything from the food you eat to the way you live.  Giving your life-affecting decisions over to people like this, as well meaning as they might be, is a huge mistake.

C. S. Lewis, (among other things, writer of the Narnia stories), put it very nicely:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

I had that problem a with my old glasses back in Middle school and High school where the bridge would brake right above the nose piece on the left side. My dad would solder the frame back together till I could get a replacement. Even had to sometimes solder them a second time as they would brake again before we could get a replacement.

As for my current pair, it's a Flexon and I've had it for 9 or 10 years now with no problems (got to love Titanium :boogie) They've even been hit with an airbag and a large spiral drawing pad (a 18x24 sized one which bloodied my nose when the airbag went off).

Yeah that is strange for Flexons, unless it's the nose piece framing (where the silicon cushions for the nose mount) that snapped, since on mine that isn't Titanium as it bends and doesn't spring back. Also I believe the hinges are not titanium as they act the same way.

Which is to say, screwed unless you're rich and healthy.  >:3

My other half related to me something that a friend of his experienced.  This guy went to a town meeting with his congressman, to ask said congresscritter about something of local interest.  As in:  not healthcare reform.  Of course, there were plenty of insurance company shillsprotesters there.  One of them held up a sign that said, "Keep government out of my Medicare."

When my spouse told me that, my brain screeched to a halt.  Once it recovered from the utter bewilderment, I sputtered, "Never mind walk and chew gum ... how does someone like that walk and breathe at the same time?!?!?!?!?!?!"

I'd tell the story about how it took 4 years to get insurance to do its !@$$^&* job and pay a bill it was supposed to, but this post is getting too long.

Taking money from Medicare and Medicaid is exactly what the plan is.  Haven't you been watching the Obama press conferences since June?  The man said it himself.  The plan is to take around $500 billion from Medicare and Medicaid, and by making the whole system "less wasteful and more efficient", they will somehow magically come up with the money.  Things like just paying doctors less for doing the same amount of work.  That's sure to increase the number of doctors participating.

Yes, that well-know federal government efficiency will save us billions.  And if not, all those newly insured people will now get priority over grandma's hip replacement.

"Alas, poor Yorick!  I don't remember this part of Hamlet so I'm just making things up!"

Meanwhile, characters from the RPs that Shades participates in are here.  They are extremely confused by the script.  Except for Kevin, who gave up and started to nap.  And Aaron, who was trying to figure out what was going on in Shades' mind, and why his mind probes weren't working.

"Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio."

I think it goes on with "Is this the face that hath borne me upon his back a thousand times, and yet now how abhorred it is" or something like that.

Yes, Shakespeare was making gay jokes that long ago. There ain't nothing new in the world, folks. Get used to it.

Now taking bets for predictions of where it'll go next. It obviously CAN'T go in the Treasury because otherwise we can't post in it (if what I've read so far concerning posts that go there, is true) And its already been in... The Lusty Siren Tavern, The Thulda Market, The Arena, The Lost Lake Inn, The Tower of Art and The Outer Fortress.

This leaves.......

The Villa, The Adventurers Guild, The Info Kiosk, The Last Dance, Project Future, the main page for The Half Moon Theatre itself, Castle Keep, Colosseum, The Long Library, Tower of Fiends and Merchants Corner. Oh and the Abandoned Mine. But I have a feeling they'll save that for last as thats to be its final resting place.

Therefore I randomly guess......... The Tower of Fiends (because I like the name) of course now that I've posted this they'll put it anywhere BUT, but eh....

EDIT - Damn you Llearch repeating boards, you crafty........ Well at least I'm first to catch it this time?
