nutmeg looks good, although I thought she had fewer fingers for some reason.

Awesome art Shadrok- it really has a nice finish to it. Only one thing I can see wrong- her right eye(her right, not ours) seems a bit off compared to the other one- like it stands a bit tilted clockwise and more closed than it's counterpart. Apart from that- there are no flaws I can see that are not related to the style itself (and as I've said before- criticizing one's style is just rude).

Not to belittle that comment, but that might not even be a flaw, but just a part of his style. This being Amber's character, you may argue that the artist of any fanart has to stick to the set looks, but I disagree- for this is a vision of this character and not just a copy of it.

I think part of that is the placement of her ears combined with the bangs that give off that effect. For some reason those bangs did give me the worst time drawing, likely do to the fact that I need to draw more hairstyles more often.

I see what you mean I think I could have brought her mask up a little in her right side of the eye. I think what did it was the fact that I made the line for the bottom of the eye too long. Moments like these are why I leave the final PSD finalized, makes small changes like this easier to fix.

Wow, very nice! He looks like he is just coming out of a finishing move, ready to close his eyes again after the battle!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love it. It's awesome. I love the pose, I think you did a great job with the details of his appearance and I really adore the coloring and shading (and wish I could do that). I really appreciate you doing this for me Shadrok, it's a very kind gesture and I won't forget that.

As for the idea behind the pic basically I was drawing a blank as to what to draw for her. When it hit me she's an artist, I'm sure she's run into this problem too. So that's what I drew.

This was drawn back when Tapewolf asked me to do a guest portion for a flashback in his comic. Part of the flash back had Keaton and this pic is a result of my first attempt at drawing her, though it didn't turn out anything like her (probably due to the fact that I drew this at work and with out references.)

These two pics were done back when I was still in art college. I believe the class was called acting for animators, and the assignment was to do two character expressions.
After looking at her I've been thinking of adding her as a character to Shadrok's back story which I'm still flushing out.

Netami was asked to leave, after breaching the rules too many times, despite being given a chance to behave himself. That's a "U R B&" type asked, BTW. Enthusiastically enforced when he breached the "generating another account to get around a ban" rule, as well, as I recall.
Just in case you're waiting for him.

I remember him being banned once but I didn't know if it was permanent. Thanks llearch for clearing that up. As for waiting for him, nah I was merely mentioning who the pic was done for. (I think this was done at the time of his banning, which could be why it ended up in a pile of papers and forgotten till now.)

Nice. I do wonder that Shadrok seems to be the only male cast member in his backstory. It seems to be him and a posse of female flight technicians. Nothing wrong with that, but having myself accidentally created a cast consisting mostly of male characters I am kind of wondering if you're doing the same sort of thing.

*does a tally on his cast*
Shadrok - Male - Leader, pilot (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/Shadrokstand.jpg)
Meg - Female - 2nd leader, pilot (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/DMFA/Meg.jpg)
Kim - Female - chief mechanic (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/DMFA/Kim-1.jpg)
Zak - Male - weapons expert (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/DMFA/Zaksheet.jpg)
Chia - Female - ships cook (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/art/Chia.jpg)
Ellen - Female - supply officer
Edward - Male - Pilot (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/EDandEl.jpg)
Krazak - Male - Flight Instructor / base commander (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/art/Krazak.jpg)
Then there's the new girl, who I think I'll name Jessica (Jet for short). I think also she'll be the assistant mechanic. (After all there are two ships, plus planes to keep up with.)
Also there's the non combatants Sid (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/Sidneycolor.jpg) and her twin Sam. (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/art/Irishsam.jpg)
Final tally is: males 4, females 7.
and it doesn't help that one of the males will be written out early on.
So I see what you mean.
*goes to bring balince to the

Thanks Kipiru, I kind of consider what Tape said as a reasonable question. In a way it lets me stop, step back, and look to see if I am getting too caught up in things that I fail to notice others.
After looking at it thought I do think I need a few more male characters. After all Shadrok is not a harem kind of guy, it just turns out I like to draw women. :P
As for Tape's male cast, well I figured that was just because it's easier to write for the physique that you have rather then that of the opposite sex. I'm always questioning myself about that with my characters as I fear I mite make them come off too tomboyish if I'm not careful.
Well I don't really believe male and female character should be put to a scale measure- it depends on the story you place in your head- i find it better to start with a couple of character and add new ones as i go along with the story. I never actually count females and males- I just go with creating the type of character I need for the scene i have in my mind.

I never counted the sexes till Tape asked, and for the most part I'll likely add some male background characters that just do things in the background of the panels. Nothing as far as making a male character and having it replace one in a scene.
I use to have 2 Griffin characters in my early drafts but as I rolled ideas around it turned out better to just leave them out. So story first, characters as I go is really the rule for me.

Indeed. If I'd thought about it when I was writing there would probably be a few more female characters. I wanted to give you an opportunity to make sure you didn't fall into the same trap :P
I did this a few days ago, and basically it's just something that came out of playing with Photoshop before I had to head off to work. Over all I like how it turned out.

technical:
3 layers
2 brushes
1 lens flare
1 lighting effect filter
time spent 10 min
Impressive work for 10 min. I'm jealous.
Wow! It looks very reallistic. Good work!
There's a bright spot in the lower-left quadrant. Does it represent anything?
Looks like a sunspot (those little glimmers of circular light you get when looking up towards the sun in this case)...maybe a flare..I'm really not sure what the term for it is. It makes sense to me since the sun is in the upper right.

Wacky Races is off again!
Today I spent a good part of my day stuck outside a gas station due to me being an idiot and locking the keys in the car. Fortunately the car was off; unfortunately my folks were not home and would not be for at least another 4 hours. So after leaving a message on our machine I then went into the gas station bought some gummies and a Mellow Yellow then stood by my car and waited. As I waited I decided to walk over to my job which wasn't too far and bought some pencils and a drawing pad to help kill some time as I waited.
Normally I wouldn't mention this because of how stupid I feel having done this but the pic that came out of the waiting turned out well enough that I'm going to post it here and later on Ink an color it. So I guess despite the day turning all "Meh" on me something good did come out of it. Plus I'm taking steps to avoid this happening again.

As for the steps; well my car has two keys, one for the locks and one for the ignition. So what I've done is put my lock key on one of those key holders that reels and that clips on to a belt loop.

So it's not a 'how' but more of a 'why' (a polite why .. not a "why oh why that seems silly" ) .. but I've got to ask .. colouring it gray+shading before brown with shading? And yes i'm prepared for "cause that's the way I did it" ;)
I admit I'm also curious for a bit more of a breakdown on the how and why of the process. I'm very envious of your coloring/shading and would love to know more about how you do what you do. :3

Question: Why did I shaded it in gray before coloring?
Answer: I shaded it in gray because it allows me to see the shade and highlight values better. Also I use a gradient map to convert the shades of gray into colors while keeping the shading.
For the Demon Bear's fur I used a three color gradient (a yellow for the highlight, a redish brown, and a dark brown for the shading).
Click for larger view (http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i100/shadrok1/art/shades.jpg)
I started using this technique after watching the artist Pinkuh on Ustream. Though her method is different from mine as she uses cream to highlight blue on a different layer, while I use white and black to shade gray on one layer. Also she erases the excess color while I use masks.

I had wondered if you'd done something along those lines. It's not a shading technique I've seen before, but it makes a lot of sense.
Thanks for the info Shadrock, didn't know that was possible.
The method turns out a very good resutls I must say, though it seems alot of the trick would be in the work in the initial gray shading.

It works a lot better then my old method of using a Multiply layer and a Screen layer. Those two layers often made the shades too dark and the Highlights to white. Plus with me using brush opacity more this new method has in a lot of ways become quicker then the old.
Quote from: rt on November 02, 2009, 07:43:52 AM
It seems a lot of the trick would be in the work in the initial gray shading.
That it is, I tend to use a brush with a 50% opacity and flow rate of 50%. As far as placing the black and white; I place the first stroke, then use the eye dropper to pick that shade/highlight and work on making a gradation using the eye dropper to help pick the in-between shades/highlights. Every so often I then use the smudge tool to blend the shades/highlights together.

Drawn, inked, and colored this during the JAVW broadcast.
Inspired by the song "Hard To See" by Five Finger Death Punch.

Drew this as my first attempt at web casting. Apart from the ups and downs (oh the downs *Shakes fist*) it was fun. I will be doing other casts in the future. :bunny
Dbear is toying with the Adventurers! It was fun watching your process, Shadrok. I look forward to seeing more.
The shading looks... well, strange in places.
The shape of the deltoid, bicep, and tricep area on the left shoulder don't look right to me.
The hands seem kind of formless, since the fingers meld into the back of the hand without definition. Since the fingers and the back of the hand are on different planes, there ought to be some difference in shade to define them.
Despite how "right" a lot of the shadows look, the image overall seems flat to me. I can't really put my finger on what it is that gives me that impression. I just don't get a sense of volume from it.

The flatness could be due to the background, because looking at in thumbnail it reminds me of the color paper drawings I did back in school.
As for the proportions, I know they are off, for the most part this was part of a test to see if I could do a drawing cast. I had my programs crash during the cast as I was sketching this. So when I found that Open Canvas had made a quick save, I decided best not press my luck on refining things and moved on to the final stages. I had yet cast tested Photoshop and was wanting to know if it would work. Over all Jtv was just buggy.
How ever today's cast in Ustream was better. There were a few bumps setting up, but after things got started it seemed to run smoothly. I will say there were times where I thought OC was about to crash but it pulled through. Also I didn't test photoshop with this one so I didn't feel the need to rush it as much as the other.

Also because people were interested in a fast forward version of me drawing, here's the OC event file (in a zip file). click to download (http://sites.google.com/site/shadroklycaonus/Dbunny.zip?attredirects=0&d=1)
Aha, the colossal duo of Dbear and Dbunny is complete! Ted and Bill, off on another whirlwind adventure! :D

I'd like to everyone who tuned in to watch as I drew this, and I hope it was as fun to watch as it was fun for me to draw. :bunny
And remember any future casts will be announced here >>>Link. (http://shadrok.livejournal.com/4204.html)
During my webcast today I drew more then one pic.
This one was a request from a viewer from Ustream. As I didn't have anything planned, I finished the sketch I was working on and did this quick drawing for them.

After which I then went back to work on the sketch and made the finished pic that is now my Avatar.

And after that I did a few doodles before ending the cast.

Also of note I did the doodles from memory so they're are some that I mangled.
Nice work on the avatar, there.

Nice work on the avatar, there.
Thanks Llearch. :mowcookie
I had hoped to have finished this during JAVW's casting but... well I guess I fell to the bane that is "
Abel's spots". Anyway this was inspired by Amber voicing her dislike of Abel's spots during the cast.

I guess every artist creates their own form of bane.
I know as I work on my comic and develop a buffer before I start posting, I've Already met mine and it is all the tech that I thought at the time was a "Good Idea". In fact I'm still trying to work out how the "Emerald sky" and "Azure moon" are to be laid out.
Bwahahahahahahaha!
nice one, Shadrok.
That is so Abel right there!
I laughed so hard XD
During today's web cast I finished a pic I had drawn on an earlier cast .

I also recorded the coloring of this pic so those who were unable to join me as I did this you can view the video here.

Swinging in the New Year, nice! The shading turned out quite well, and I like how she is still airborne after the spin move I envision them completing.
... and I dance, dance, dance...
Here are the two pics I drew during today's webcast.

Hope everyone who joined me today had fun watching me draw.
Most enjoyable. Thanks for putting your work out there for us to see. Nicely done, as usual!
Yes, it was fun, and the pictures turned out great. :)
