Title: Duke Nukem Forever
Post by: Tapewolf on May 07, 2009, 04:20:00 AM
Looks like it's been cancelled:
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/07/0146233&art_pos=1

...what's surprising is that it took so long.

Too bad, I liked living with the myth of Duke Forever coming "soon". I hope someone eventually picks up the franchise and actually produces something worthy. Till then I'm waiting for Serious Sam 3.  :gun2

'nuff said.

This may amuse:  http://duke.a-13.net/

The bulk of it is a list of things which have happened while DNF has been under development.  Also other things which have taken less time, such as the moon landing and the Beatles forming, releasing all their albums and splitting.

Oop. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/05/07/3d-realms-closure-confirmed/

It's official, folks.

this was inevitable, folks, "when its done" is no valid way to keep a company afloat.

truth be told, 3d Realms haven't actually developed a major release in years.

Blizzard seem to be the only game developer capable to afford the "when it's done" philosophy.

I think you'll find it was probably Id Software who pioneered that, with Quake in particular (which IIRC was first promised around 1990 as a side-scrolling RPG).

Probably true, but the big boys at Blizzard are the only current developer not making any efforts on deadlines. If it's theirs, it will be a hit no matter when it comes! So far!

that's prolly because they have income to back that up, See: Starcraft, World of Warcraft, etc.

3d Realms do, (or rather, did) not have that.

yeah, but unlike 3DRealms, they actually released things in the meantime.

I'm frankly surprised that this didn't happen years ago. I mean, come on: twelve years? Twelve freaking years? That's insane.

Five bucks Penny Arcade makes a comic about this.

This does have a potential bright side, however.

whoever eventually gets the Rights to Duke may actually produce the damn thing.

within an actual Timeframe.

Smart money is on "The game is going to be crap" if it happens.

I shall pray that I'm wrong on this....  Like I was about good games becoming mainstream back when I was naive enough to believe that.

The one thing I'm looking forward to is the 2009 vaporware lists. DNF will get one more time with the title of #1, and then finally be retired for all time.

It's already gotten the lifetime achievement in vaporware, but was brought back to the list, wasn't it?
