Title: Obsessive Listening
Post by: Teh_Hobo on March 14, 2009, 02:57:15 AM
This forum needs moar music related threads IMO. So to that end, what have y'all listened to lately that you just have to hit the repeat button over and over and over again?
For me:
Drottnar - Welterwerk
It took me a while to get into this album, but it is now stuck in my current playlist. Proggy black metal with just the right amount of aggression, production that isn't typical black metal answering-machine-buried-under-a-tree-stump style but not super crystal clear, odd tuning, riffs that stick in my brain, just an awesome album.
General Surgery - Corpus In Extremis: Analyzing Necrocriticism
This album, however, took me no time at all to get into. Its total Carcass worship but it is extremely well done Carcass worship. Riff driven grindcore with a lyrical focus on pathological and medical procedures. Excellent for FPS deathmatches.
YOUR TURN

Hm... probably "00 Gundam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov36WL6q200)" from the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 OST 3. Aside from that, Yoko Kanno's "Rise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9XQ2a6zVmE)" from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig. Those two have really had my attention for the last week.

Well a couple bands I tend to have frequent sudden urges to listen to are "Within Temptation," "Nightwish," and "The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus."

A few songs I go to often are "Why or Why Not?" from When They Cry, first season, and "Never Too Late" and "Animal I Have Become" by Three Days Grace.   :januscat

I've been on a Mother/Earthbound kick lately.  I got this Mother remix (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/121517) among other songs on a CD and I keep repeating it.

Recently the albums I can't stop listening to almost solidly have been:
Karmacode by Lacuna Coil
Memorial by Moonspell  (LENTIIILS!)
Ommadawn by Mike Oldfield

One album which is driving me nuts is 'Tommy' by The Who.  This is because I have a sudden urge to listen to it again and I don't have a copy of it.  There are some lo-fi recordings on youtube but I can see I'm going to have to break down and purchase a copy of it.
Must also get Queen II.

The last few days I have been listening to my own new album a lot, though that's mostly a quality control thing  :P

I have no idea how i forgot to put this in my original post.
The Berzerker - The Reawakening
Industrial grindcore fusion. YESSSS. The track The Deception has quite possibly one of the catchiest riffs I have ever heard in a grind song. Just about every other song is memorable on its own, and the remix tracks are... interesting. Some EXCELLENT, some, not so much, but thats to be expected when you remix grindcore.

Okay I think I am about to overdose on grindcore, black metal and noise music. time for some reggae for a while.

I wouldn't call my listening obsessive, but if I choose to listen to music for a day, often I play the same ones, with a few others mixed in. xP

See Who I Am; Our Solemn Hour; Pale; Hand of Sorrow; Memories; Aquarius; Truth Beneath The Rose; Somewhere; Swan Song, Mother Earth -- All from Within Temptation...

Life -- E-Type

Animal I Have Become -- Three Days Grace (DANG that thing's catchy...)

Higher -- Creed

Footloose -- Kenny Loggins (Yes, I inherited some of my mom's taste in music. xP)

The Border -- America (Case in point...)

Take On Me -- A Ha

Uninvited -- Alanis Morriset

Livin' on a Prayer; You Give Love a Bad Name; It's My Life -- All by Bon Jovi

Holdin' Out for a Hero -- Bonnie Tyler (Yes, I know. xP)

Crash and Burn -- Savage Garden

May It Be -- Enya (Quite possibly one of the most beautiful things out there...)

Nemo -- Nightwish

Rebirthing -- Skillet

And the rest, well, let's just say I have a bit of a nice full MP3 player, thanks to my friends and family.  :3

Oh, I've got tons of 'em. I tend to hit repeat before my latest addiction song's even over, just because I can't stand the thought of it ending. But lately, it's been "Enter Sandman" as played by the Vitamin String Quartet, "I Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jett, and "Feeling Good" as sung by either Muse or Michael Bublé. Farther back but still recent includes "I Don't Care" by Fall Out Boy and "Blue Morning, Blue Day" by Foreigner.

(scrolls further up the topic)

Aisha...musically, you and I will get along juuuust fine. :D

My musical taste tends to pretty much stagnate until Keaton gets me interested in something else :U

Recently, Apocalyptica and aesma daeva have been up there. Mark Knopfler, as always. Been listening to the Dubliners, too, although I seem to have missed the boat there, what with Ronnie Drew now being dead.

Recently picked up the album Sound of Madness by Shinedown.  There's like 5 or 6 songs on there that I can now sing along with (all be it poorly) because of how many times I listened to them in the first day I owned it.  Some that really stood out for me...

"Sound of Madness"
"Sin with a Grin"
"Cry for Help"

If you like Shinedown, or hell if you like metal in general, I recommend get it.

I keep hearing about Hollywood Undead all over. I guess I will have to look this up.

*Listens*

Hmm.
Sounds sort of emoish with some industrial backing...
WHAT
OH GOD WHAT
WHY AM I LIKING THIS  :erk

THIS MAKES NO SENSE
Honestly, I should hate this with a fiery passion! It contains everything that I hate!! I hate the whole mask gimmick, that was retarded when Slipknot and Mushroomhead started it, I hate most rap and wanksters like that make me cringe, I like very, very little emo...

(big toothy smile and an evil laugh)

I've had that reaction to so many things... It's good music, and believe it or not, they aren't just a studio band. Though I don't usually have that reaction to music; I'm willing to give any genre a try. (Your reaction is about the same as when I realized that my favorite villain on Naruto was *shudder* Orochimaru...)

I don't typically react that way to music either, I try to be as open minded as I can about music. I listen to most anything, though my current tolerance for emo is very low and I'm just starting to get into a little bit of hip hop and rap. That confused me immensely though.
In an attempt to keep on topic:
Ruffneck & Ophidian - All The Way Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3nvIGmjR90)
This song makes me want to break out some glowsticks.

My newest obsession:
Crack The Skye - Mastodon: Oh wow. This is quickly overtaking Leviathan as my favorite Mastodon album. The harsh vocals are pretty much completely gone now, which sort of makes me sad, but the dude can sing fairly well when he tries. The drumming seems a bit more controlled now, before it sounded like the drummer was going to explode half the time, maybe hes calmed down a bit. The guitarwork is EXCELLENT. Also, the ability to have two 10+ minute songs on one album and for me to never get bored is awesome.
And also
Refuse/Resist - Krisiun: Brazillian death metal covering older Brazillian death metal. Never heard the original Sepultura track, but its apparently pretty much legendary in the death metal scene. This version is pretty damn good though.

Moonspell - Night Eternal

Specifically, At Tragic Heights which starts with a rather cool quotation from the Book of Revelations, Night Eternal and Shadow Sun.  The other tracks are okay, but the album as a whole doesn't (yet) have the "OMG, this is awesome" vibe of their earlier "Memorial" album.

Really good album, though it suffers from the typical double-CD problem of having too much filler

One of my absolute favorites of the 90s, listened to it for the millionth time yesterday. Probably ruined the band for me, I don't think any of their other albums come anywhere near this.

Murder Ballads.  I have a copy given to my by someone who found it too depressing.  The first side is okay, and has a few pretty good tracks on it.  Don't touch the second side with a stick, though.

Just to clarify it's a followup to Bill, not what I'm listening to obsessively  :rolleyes

Take that back, "The Curse of Millhaven" is hilarious

I actually don't like most of that album, it's not depressing, it's just dull.

(also you should try out The Mollusk, lots of it is supposedly an homage to psych-prog rock, but the whole thing is really good (except for Ocean Man, which is kind of plain)

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention - We're Only In It For The Money

For an outrageous sum (£50) I finally managed to obtain a copy of "Don't Bring The Rain" by Aragon, an obscure progressive-rock outfit from Melbourne.  This has taken me about ten years to obtain after first discovering them on Napster, so I'm going to listen to it obsessively, like it or not  :B
At the very least I'll have a hi-fi copy of their song "Company of Wolves" (no resemblance to the film).  Now, if I can just find their third album...

The Way by Fastball
Clint Eastwood by The Gorillaz

And one funny one....

That robot creeps me out immensely.
newest listenings:
The White EP - Agalloch
Mostly instrumental folk, which was a surprise to me since Agalloch is more known for being a Folk/Black Metal/Post Rock amalgamation. It is literally IMPOSSIBLE for me to be in a bad mood when I listen to this.
Semimimimimin - Sitaar Tah!
20 to 30 sitars all going at the same time, with a throat singer thrown in near the middle. And its one gigantic 43 minute track. Like with Agalloch, it is physically impossible to be mad when I listen to this.

"The Crucifixion" - Aragon

Most decent progressive rock outfits have an excessively-long track on their albums.  This is theirs on "Don't Bring The Rain" and is IMHO the standout track.  Clocking in about 15 minutes, it's not actually about Jesus.

So take heed all you governments
Hide grace for one man lied
And stand below your cross
And watch your nations crucified

I'm so tired of waiting...

I'm listening to nothing but bad music in order to get inspiration for a satirical, really ridiculous fanfic.

Insane Clown Posse is on the list. I'm not too fond of them. I'm also listening to some guys a very good friend dug up for me on MySpace.

As I said over AIM, it feels like I'm being ear-fucked.

Note to self:  Never touch Keatons ears.  She apparently likes to put dirty things in them.

Just ask Stygian.

Portal - Outre

This is some hard stuff to describe. The band was apparently going for something Lovecraftian in nature, and it shows. The guitars swirl around, occasionally a riff will surface from the chaos, twisted and dissonant. The percussion pounds along, nearly buried by the guitar sound but still audible enough to give a semblance of rhythm. The vocals are hoarse growls, uttering a few words every so often. The overall atmosphere is pretty damn creepy. It's like listening to a good horror movie, if that makes sense. It makes me think of strange creatures crawling around in the dark and damp, things lurking in shadows. I can't listen to this in the dark; my mind overreacts to everything if I try.

...I feel like such a twit for having written all that and being completely serious about it. Ugh. :baghead

People Who Can Eat People Are The Luckiest People In The World - Andrew Jackson Jihad
Only God Can Judge Me - Andrew Jackson Jihad
Folk punk. Some pretty interesting stuff, lots of humor. "A Song Dedicated To The Memory Of Stormy the Rabbit" is the one time when badly tuned and rather badly played horns dont make me cringe. "Human Kittens" on Only God Can Judge Me is an incredibly sad song, which was a surprise after listening to People... since most of that album is angry, funny, or at most angsty. Now that I think about it, most of Only God Can Judge Me is pretty sad. But in a good way. If thats possible.

"but theres a bad man in everyone, no matter who we are, theres a rapist and a nazi living in our tiny hearts, child pornographers and cannibals, and politicians too, theres someone in your head waiting to FUCKING STRANGLE YOU"

Newest obsessions:
Pig Destroyer - Most of their discography
I managed to acquire all of Pig Destroyer's major albums recently. I dont think i could ever find EVERYTHING theyve done. With grind bands like them, they likely have thirty or so splits and eps. Anyway, DAAAMN this is some good stuff. The intro and outro on Prowler in the Yard are rather disturbing, though. Hell, most of the subject matter on each album is pretty disturbing, Prowler in the Yard just stands out as a pillar of disturbingness. Still amazing nonetheless.

Jungle Rot - What Horrors Await
ZOMG Jungle Rot actually put out an album that doesnt bore me to death! And is actually quite good in the process!

Dr Awkward - The Next Gen ep
On a non metal note, some damn fine nerdcore hiphop. Raps about playing SOCOM and Halo while drunk, detecting imposter nerds, and other various nerd related things. Good stuff. As an added bonus, it's free! (http://www.rhymetorrents.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2829)

EDIT - On a related note, I just finished listening to 1349s new album. I am incredibly disappointed. Oh well.

Ween - "Buckingham Green"

This song's been described as a side-long prog rock epic condensed to 3 minutes, and it ain't a lie.

Probably the best song they ever did, still need to check out more of their catalog.

I recently (i.e. today) discovered that The Ink Spots did a version of We'll Meet Again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxrWz9XVvls) (kinda spoilers), and that Vera Lynn did versions of Maybe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkBNKa2KXZE), A Kiss to Build A Dream On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3PXiV95kwA), and I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYHo1Z5KODQ).  And finally, it appears that much of Vera Lynn's music is in the public domain (http://www.archive.org/details/VeraLynn-111-114).

So I've been listening to a lot of Ink Spots and Vera Lynn.

(P.S. Vera Lynn is alive and hates the BNP (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/4687730/Dame-Vera-Lynn-takes-on-BNP-over-White-Cliffs-of-Dover.html).)

KABUTO THE PYTHON - Parseltongue
This album. This album. Holy crap. Best nerdcore album EVER. Best free nerdcore album, anyway.  Kabuto is probably my favorite rapper, and this is some of his best stuff, and its got some excellent collaborations. This album had me dancing around like a wankster all day today. And I felt absolutely no shame. None.

The Berzerker - All The Things She Said (TATU Cover)
I have to thank GabrielsThoughts for this one. If I hadnt visited that mixpod site, I would have never found out about this absolutely hilarious cover. "ALLLL THE THIINGS SHE SAAAAAID"(in death metal grunts) Absolutely classic.
