Heh... I must say I wasn't expecting this at all.

It's probably some illusion made by Fa'Lina anyway

Wow...

Um, well, it may not be special Halloween art, but it certainly is appropriate for the day.

Poor Abel... I just love his face in the bottom panel.

Okay, sorry, I really wanted to say that. Also, yes wow, this was totally unexpected. I love being shown that people can still surprise me. It restores my faith in people.

I had this idea rumbling in my head, but every time I looked at it, I thought, ``No, weren't we sure that Devin died?''

One possibility is that Fa'Lina needs to see how Abel reacts to stress, but since Devin is looking pretty shiny, I suspect he's not there.

I'm definitely coming down on the side of Devin actually being in Abel's head.

It would explain why he spends so much of DMFA more or less channeling him after all...

Ghost of whiny dumbasses or illusion by someone I don't know, but it's pretty funny actually. Ghost of whiny dumbasses is funny to me. Although "Devins" eyes look like they're shining and it's kinda creepy. And apparently he is some kinda ghost cuz I can see through him. But yeah, that curve-ball hit pretty much all of us in the face.

My theories on this:

1.  What Devin said
2.  Abel is dreaming and another 'cubi is playing with his thoughts.
3.  Another 'cubi is shapeshifting to mess with/help out Abel. (under the "would you have believed it from anyone else?" principle)
4.  The 'cubi in 2 or 3 is Fa'lina
5.  Abel is dreaming and one of the briefly mentioned "other things"  in the dreamscape has found him and is tormenting him with the image of Devin.

Random theory:

Due to the trauma of a death at the point where Abel enter 'cubi maturity, the psychic portion of Abel's powers quick-copied many of Devins thoughts/emotions at time of death resulting in a nearly seperate persona developing in Abel's mind that will eventually result in the persona he has in DMFA.

It's either Abel's mind doing it as "Devin" said, or it's another cubi messing with him after digging through his thoughts and taking Devin's shape.

But he looks transparent.

So either `cubi can shift into transparent forms or this is being done by a different mechanism.  Or the transparency is an illusion.  I don't see any reason why one should be more likely than the other.

Considering Devin's eyes, I would entertain the possibility that he is now one of the undead if I didn't know that Dark Pegasus is supposed to be the creator of the undead race(or so I gathered from the main comic and now DP's character Bio) and suspect that DP hadn't yet caused their creation at this point in history or had already done so before the events of the current storyline.

True, but I've found that more often than not it turns out to be a plasma powered mini nuclear warhead device.
I think someone is unwisely playing with his head, and it changes him forever, causing the Abel we get today. :3

That I did not expect.  Most of the sensible theories have been covered.
I'm going either with insanity, Abel still being asleep, or someone outside messing with his head.  Devin actually visiting is a possibility I suppose, but we've never really seen a shade before, and he (in so much as he exists) seems to be scoffing the idea himself.

If Abel doesn't panic completely, "How's Xander?" might be an interesting question.  Though I can imagine him getting some glib reply back, like "Dead."

I'm starting to wonder whether he is a projection or Fa'Lina manipulating Abel's dreams.  She or the Doctor would probably not have let him go if he was on the verge of a total nervous breakdown.

My gut feeling is dream sequence.  However, I also see another (remote) possibility.  Since cubi can capture souls, perhaps Abel accidentally stole Devin's soul just before he died. (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_234.php)  :rolleyes

Soul trapping isn't an innate ability.  As I understand it from what Amber's said, it is just a spell that anyone can cast if they have the requisite skills.

If Devin appeared while Ink was testing him, Abel would be more able to brush it off as a test.

If Devin appears after Abel is convinced that the testing is over, he'd be less able to dismiss it, making it more likely that such a test would reveal the sort of information that Ink/Fa'Lina wants.

Not sure what that means, but I think it supports what you're saying.

More or less the ``Man with Two Brains'' idea.  If not the soul, then perhaps the mind.  Short of a definitive statement from Amber (which is probably coming in succeeding strips), I couldn't say.

You think that would require a certain amount of effort... I mean, stealing a folk's soul seems... kinda important / permanent, y'know?

The brain is a strange thing.  I'm voting on what Devin-Ghost said and sticking with Abel's mind trying to figure out a way to help aleaviate the stress by showing a recent non stressful immage.

In all consideration Devin is a logical choice.  The last time we saw Devin he was protecting Abel (being a bit of a jerk but protecting Abel none the less).  Even after Devin was mortally injured Abel was working up the courage to perform healing magic to save Devin's life.
Abel's dad would be a horrorable choice because Abel doesn't know who his father really is but he does know that his biological father is a(n) (insert your appropiate insult).
Abel's mom is not the best of choices because last time he saw her he thinks it was his fault that she got hurt.  Kira would be a weird choice because she was his teacher.

Well, if you're going to accidentally steal a soul, the point of death is the most likely time for it to happen.

And it's not necessarily *permanent*. Aaryana was storing them in jars, after all.

I think my official prediction is going to have to be 'Devin resurrected as an undead time-traveling back from the future, semitransparent because time travel only makes an illusionary projection unless you possess someone's body, like in Quantum Leap'.

Of course, iTunes picked the moment I visit the comic to shuffle to Michael Jackson's "Thriller".

And I somehow remembered this classic Due South moment:
Benton Fraser: *stops and looks in the back seat where his father's ghost is sitting*
Fraser Sr.: Hello, son.
Benton Fraser: *warily* Hello, Dad. How are you?
Fraser Sr.: I'm dead, son. Other than that, do you mean?
Benton Fraser: No, that's what I was asking.
Fraser Sr.: Oh, that's good. Never be ashamed to ask a stupid question, son.

I don't know the full extent of what they can do with them.  The most infamous one is consuming them to increase their powers and lifespan.  From what Abel says they can also be used to enchant objects a'la Morrowind.
When the topic came up at AC, Amber commented that there are beneficial uses for doing this kind of thing (i.e. beneficial to the person being soul-filched), but you don't often hear about them.

The first benefit that comes to mind is not being dead after your allotted three score and ten is up, for a start.

Less of a benefit for most Creatures, but still...

I actually started writing Future History to explore these ideas.  The problem with stealing the souls of the dead with intent to resurrect them is that you need to have a body to put them in.  Joshua and Dorcan are one approach - otherwise, you may have to kick someone else out of their body.

True, but if you're not intending on putting the free soul into a body, it's a lot easier.

Also there's the possibility of, uh, I guess "harvesting" would be the correct word, of the elderly. Once their bodies start to fail, it starts becoming more attractive to be rid of them...

My gut feeling is dream sequence.  However, I also see another (remote) possibility.  Since cubi can capture souls, perhaps Abel accidentally stole Devin's soul just before he died. (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_234.php)  :rolleyes

You think that would require a certain amount of effort... I mean, stealing a folk's soul seems... kinda important / permanent, y'know?
At the time that Devin died, Abel was trying to do something, although it isn't compleely clear what he was attempting. (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Abel_64.php)

I think Devin wasn't dead.  He was only mostly dead!  Which means he was a lil alive!

So it was as simple as a quick visit to Miracle Max's place.   :3
Well, I don't know if Miracle Max was around, but Kria would have been in the right place. (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Abel_70.php)

Now, that's an interesting train of thought, though a little improbable.

Strip 71 in particular.  We know Kria is able to raise the dead, though to be honest, she probably didn't know how to do it when she was in her late 30s or whatever.
We also know that Devin, a mere Being, was powerful enough to kill at least one Demon - and that's just the sort of thing that Kria likes.  Though again, it's not clear she held that view at the time.

Finally, even if Kria did manage to repair his body, breathe life back into it and stuff his soul back into it all before Glory and company returned, that wouldn't give us a translucent Devin.  If she somehow brought him back as a shade, Kria probably doesn't know how to get into SAIA.  Devin certainly wouldn't, unless being dead has made him privy to the secrets of the universe or something.

In short, it's a beautiful idea, but a little too cheery for AS, and I don't see how it would work.

I'm torn between Devin being a very convincing hallucination of Abel's no doubt shattered mind, or a real honest to goodness specter. Though I'm leaning towards the former, mostly because I've had dreams where people I know were involved and acted convincingly like themselves, so I don't think imagining a ghost of someone you think you got killed in a shattered and wounded state doesn't seem like a stretch of the imagination to me. In fact maybe he's dreaming! I mean it looks like he drifted off, so maybe he only thinks that he's awake, the activities of the past few days in his life are certainly nightmare inducing.

Take a look at the next strip.  Abel declares that he can do it. (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Abel_65.php)  What "it" is isn't stated, but you have to assume that it something that would help Devin, and Abel had  been learning magic. (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Abel_25.php)  In addition, if you look at Devin's thoughts, you'll see that one of them reads "Poor Abel! I can't leave him by himself."

I'm not saying it's likely, but just collecting facts.

Not Abel, someone else in the Academy.  It's likely that you are no longer able to have dreams by the time you get the power to alter them.  What I meant was that if Abel is asleep, Devin could easily be an avatar of Fa'Lina or some other 'Cubi in the Academy.

I read that as "I can get out of this mess" rather than "I can help a mortally-wounded colleague".  I don't know if Abel knows healing much in the way of healing spells.  Though if he did know one that could have put Devin back together, it might explain his torment.
If so, we might see Devin demanding to know why Abel didn't save him.

Well, maybe he hasn't learned he has the ability, and I'm just wondering why someone would use Devin to mess with him. If it is the case I doubt Fa'lina, mostly because she would seem to have a vested interest in him recovering from the shattering of his life.

I'm assuming that if Devin is someone's avatar it is Fa'Lina doing this, and it is one of the techniques she's using to help him.

It would seem that she does know about Devin:

Well, not that I like this theory, either, but Abel did learn magic from Kria, and we don't have any definitive evidence that Kria doesn't know soul stealing spells (in fact, given her name, it just might be a family tradition).  Further, Abel seems to have finished his studies with Kria, and thus she probably taught him a few advanced spells at one point.

odd, and yet not unexpected. If I recall back when Dev first kicked the bucket someone suggested that Abel being in such close proximity to Devin as he was dying would (and  in the fledgling cubi fashion of reading everyones thoughts constantly) in effect have downloaded Devin's entire life's memories... also being Cubi, with nearly infinite lifespan Abel would have no problem processing both sets of memories

Ironically, If Dev was also Cid/Aniz's son this could potentially be fun for the entire family. Abel would have all his book smarts and Devin's knowledge of Kung fu action skillz  .

It's not impossible, I just think it's a unlikely.  Beings aren't known for going around stealing souls, and I imagine she was only teaching Being-level magic.  She certainly did nothing to dissuade Abel from the notion that he was a Being himself.

Also, if her speciality was young children, she might only have taught him until he was 12 or so tops.  Abel called her 'Miss Soulstealer' which suggests to me he hadn't seen her for quite a few years.  Would you want 12-year-olds being able to rip each others' souls out because someone stole their lunch money or their best friend was rotten to them?

Finally, soul-stealing might take a while to learn, by which I mean a few decades.  This is just conjecture, but for all we know, soul-stealing has prerequisites.
For instance, to do VLSI design you'd need a certain amount of computer studies, electronics (which itself requires pretty good math), digital logic, RF engineering, at least some knowledge of quantum physics and probably chemistry as well.
Likewise, to steal someone's soul, you might have to understand a whole load of other subjects first.

Perhaps it's easier to capture a soul that is already leaving someone's body.  Perhaps Kria figured out that he was a creature of some sort and taught him the procedure as some sort of death rite but without telling him the true purpose of the act.  After all, you don't put someone in a body bag until you're sure that that person is dead.  There's no chance that Abel would try something like that unless someone was well and truly deceased.

Though, like I said, I don't believe it.

EDIT: I also think it was a play on the Ghost of christmas past (present or future)

Ironically enough, I've read  vampires are notorious ghost haters... with cubi being simmilar to vampires I wander if it's a chemical imbalance in the brain

I have had those waking dreams from time to time but its just right of the bat and its fun if you get the realization that you are asleep. that then gives you the power to control the dream. As for Abe it might be that his friend did not cross over out of fear for Abe's safety and had fallowed him on clung to him and went a long for the ride and just now spoke up?

and for those of you who haven't figured it out yet- if it's too dark to read, highlight the damn thing with your mouse, and like magic, it appears!

That we know of so far. :mowwink Oh wait, there's also Spiders (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_751.php).

The spiders are a phobia, not a psychosis

So is the blood. Then which is the mentioned psychosis?

Aren't phobias technically psychoses?

I'm pretty sure Phobias are a type of anxiety disorder, and therefore not a psychosis.

Psychoses are things like schizoid disorders or delusional disorders.  So unless the spiders are talking to you...

Maybe I should rephrase that.

I do believe this thread has been successfully derail'd.

We're now talking about Abel interacting with voices that aren't there, again, so I think that's pretty close.

To the earlier-posed question of what Abel was trying to do earlier:

I believe he was trying to work up the courage to zip out from under-cover, drag Devin back into cover, and heal him enough that he doesn't die. I think any claims that he knew anything at all about soul-stealing can be pretty-much discounted (apart from knowing that certain creatures can do it).

I don't think that Abel was trying to steal a soul.  I agree that he was trying some sort of healing magic.  But there is a possibility that it didn't work correctly.  He might have been able to stop the soul from leaving and moving on but not able to put the soul back in the body.

The way I saw it, he had only just managed to work up the courage when Devin died.

Working up the courage, yes. Got it worked up (though late), perhaps not. And if he was hearing Devin's dying thoughts, that may have slowed down his resolve as an unfamiliar experience to filter through (interference).

But basically, what that means is that he didn't do anything. Which still leaves us with a dead Devin.

Yes, but it's not nice to post about Amber's typos.

In fact, I think it's even in the rules. Amber prefers to be sent an email or a PM. And since it's just a throwaway image, I suspect she figured "sod it" and left it that way.

It's fixed now, though...
