Title: Star Wars: Old Republic
Post by: Azlan on October 23, 2008, 03:06:13 PM
Another MMORPG... yay... However, this one is based on Bioware's KotOR franchise of SW in conjunction with Lucasarts.  Rumors existed all over the game industry about this project and it will be the end of the KotOR line... there will not be a KotOR III.

It has been said that Bioware recruited the original SWG team to this project.

I have mixed feelings about this, being a KotOR fan, ex-SWG player, and an SW game fan in general.

Well, at least if it's an MMO, they can't butcher the plot the way they did for KoTor2. And it's a shame, I really wanted to know what happens to Revan and the Exile's companions........

Or butcher the gameplay beyond recognition, I don't really think the KOTOR engine is well designed for PvP play, KOTOR 1 is probably better in that aspect but I can't see how non-jedi will be able to keep up with their system, though hopefully it would offer some DnD style building options, like multiclassing. Still, bioware is controlled by EA, and lets not forget all the other titles they have butchered, including KOTOR II.

Well, Greg Zeschuk has promised a more in-depth, open ended storyline and engaging characters... but we will see.  It has been remarked that the game can be played like a single player RPG (not as a stand alone, but sans PUGs).

I'm not sure I'm going to play this, but I guess I'll have to wait until the beta to make a final call.

That is actually something I *really* hope they give significant balance consideration to, and because it helps dark-sided casters a lot more than light-sided ones in terms of Force points used and DC, especially force storm which zaps everyone in (I think) a 30 ft radius of the target. In a mass melee, 1d6/level to everyone, fort save for half, can be quite powerful. I don't know what level/gear setups they'll be using, but I kind of remember it adds both wisdom and charisma to the DC meaning a consular can put a 16 into both at character creation, and continue boosting wisdom and have a very powerful lightning. In a massive melee, that can be quite powerful. It's a fortitude save as well, meaning that there's no evasion reflex save for none, and unlike in normal DnD, where more things have evasion (only scouts have evasion in KOTOR, but it's only useful for grenades), force storm doesn't zap your allies, and more, considering how the force points system works, dark jedi can spam force storms for hours on end, wheras a sorcerer or a wizard spamming their most powerful spells like that will run themselves out of power quite quickly.  Force shock probably isn't very spectacular against a guardian, who probably has a decent fortitude and chance of making the save, 10 HP/level + constitution, toughness, and con gear. Other considerations are the availability of electrical resistance and % immunity items, use of force resistance items, and whether or not they add the equivalent of spell focus and spell penetration feats for consulars.
