Title: Species changing (Aliyka)
Post by: LigerJet on July 11, 2006, 03:40:19 AM
http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_117.php How does one go about changing their species?  What's this Digo Market?  Only $29.95!?  That sounds like something from the back of a magazine.  "FOR ONLY $29.95, YOU TOO CAN BECOME A PHOENIX!"

Since the origin of DMFA is http://www.furcadia.com/, it is a reference to one of the character graphic add-ons from Digo Market:

Hm.  I was hoping for a more interesting explanation, but okay! XD

It was an old joke, she's moved further from Furcadia as time has passed (though I believe Lost Lake is still there to visit).

Indeed. It was probably one of the very last Furcadian-based gag references I used in DMFA.  Anything else after I tried to be more subtle or ambiguous enough to not require any knowledge in Furcadia to get.

It's kind of a challenge to add in references to a mature setting when you strive to maintain a PG Rating. You guys know what Furcadia is known for.

I stayed away from those areas, or at least when I did try no one was around.

Back when I played Furcadia, those areas didn't really exist. Or if they did, not to the level they exist now.

I once visited out of pure curiousity...

Never again.  :|

I've never been, and now I'm scared to go.

What happened to Furcadia? oo

Wow... I used to go there for a while, but not many times, and not for the last few months. Has it changed THAT much?

Eh. it really depends on where you go really.

My memories of Furcadia at its prime are about 5+ years old...back around 1999.  It'd be a lot different than today's Furcadia.

If anything...I'd say the option to create dreams with custom made patches attached, and just the general size increase of Furcadia gave way to the increase availability and easy-access to mature things.  And while non-mature stuff exists, its usually a bit harder to find.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info.

Now I know what people meant when they said that having you on their AIM Buddy Lists only serves as an indicator of DMFA updates. Anyway, it's nice to know I got your name right.

Err... that may be because the original question has already been answeredso now this is a topic about Furcadia, I think.

Ah, Furcadia...I've been there for a while, but mostly given up on it now.  My first character became a moderator for a dream that sadly has lost all of its good members and its good RPing.  If anything it's just something to explore around now.  I had a character based on Aisha that went to the real Lost Lake for a bit...sadly now, since I've decided to keep up with things, Furc is more a waste of computer space than anything.

It's fun for a while, but you run into LOTS and LOTS of twinks and other junk.  Trust me.  :p  I've seen few serious dreams made.

Though I've always been wondering, since the "twink" reference in the comics was based on Furc, I wonder just how easy/hard it would be to maintain their description of spammers and godmoders in this slightly more realistic world.

I think it's a law of nature that the longer a medium of free expression exists the more of it that proportionally will be devoted to things of a pornographic nature.  Theres probably a fancy name for that law somewhere...

But yeah, if thing X can conceivably be used for sexual stimulation, it will not take very long for it to be used that way.

I was fond of Furcadia, in what most would consider (in the vernacular) to be "back in the day".  Not long after it was first released, when it was supremely buggy.  You think it's buggy now?  Ha!  Anyway, back then, it was kind of like a new MMO, it was odd and interesting.  It had a weird coding language that kept taunting me with its weirdness.  It was fun to spend short periods of time there and I picked up a couple of interesting friends from there.

However, like many things, Furcadia became too big for its boots.  It sprawled and spiralled outwards in a manner not well controlled until it was so big that it could barely be considered as Furc anymore.  I don't remember there being adult areas in Furc back in the day either, Amber.  It was mostly just what people got up to in innocently named dreams, which a person might wander in on and get some mental scarring from.

But yes, it was interesting back in the day, kind of like SecondLife is rather interesting now.  I need to play there more, I really do.  Not that I recognized anyone when I was there last, mind you ... but I was there at what would be night, in the US, UK day here, so that would explain that.

----

Oh wait!  SilverfoxR was there, that's one person I knew.  That much I remember.

Also, am I the only one who keeps nearly hitting quote instead of edit.  Either I'm going nuts or the quote and edit buttons have switched around since the last board and considering the theme, my mind keeps trying to convince me that the quote button is the edit button.

Not a complaint, just an amused note.

I thought there was a Linux build nowadays.  Or is your problem the data link?  Or the credit-card business?  Or plain old hardware?

My problem is I don't want to get sucked into it :)

No, the problem is my video card. It's lame and it can't handle SL. -_-

I think Furcadia has always had a FurN.. (The adult section) Its been there as long as I can remember and I think it was about 2 years old when I joined.

Wow Netami, its known for that? Funny, I know there's a lot of it, but I don't happen to see it much. Perhaps I just have a gift for avoiding that kinda thing. Sure you can get your kicks there but there are other places to dink around.

I agree though that RP is definately NOT what it used to be in Furc. Its all kind of died down and now you have to really look to find a good, long standing RP.

While we're on the topic, I have a question for you old Furc Rpers. Did anyone here happen to frequent "Blackstone Tavern & Inn?"

I can't blame you for that, Tape.  I want to get into it but then I keep realizing that I'd be sitting around and chatting, which would keep me from the other things I want to be doing; like replaying HL2 Episode One (again) and levelling up my absurd [Iksar Paladin, et al] Everquest II characters.

Oh and Gab, I don't see that Second Life requires that much of a superiour graphics card, due to the way they dynamically load in textures, unless you're in a place that doesn't constantly use endless videos and huge images (thankfully, Lost Lake doesn't seem to be that way) then you're going to see lots and lots of lag in that game, it's simply the way it's designed.

If you're seeing lag, it's likely just a bad area, so once you get to a more dignified area which is less filled with wall to wall video, it'll calm down.  I'd say though that Second Life is probably more dependant on the net connection you have than the graphics card.

Basically, a good DSL/cable internet connection and even something as old as a Radeon 9600 should run it just fine.

(In other words, grab yourself a bargain bin 9600 and that'll probably do.)

Bah. There are too many twinks on Furc now.

I went on earlier, and one of 'em "rapped" me. XD And he got mad when I kept saying stuff like "Can you teach me how to rap?" and "Wow, how do you rap people? :o I wanna knowz!"

There were idiots saying lots of nawty words too...in 2 pokemon dreams and that Dog Pound dream in AI. >> I know I'm a perv, but what they were saying was just...too nawty. They used chatspeak too. *Shudders* That made my eyes burn. Alot. D:

:< I feel sad. I found out about DMFA on Furc...And there used to be lots of nice people on Furc...and now it's full of stupid twinks. >>

...*Leaves thread because he/she's bored*

From everything I heard...SecondLife seems to be a little bit more "controlled" or not as naughty as Furcadia...

I'd actually have to agree with that.

I didn't dare venture outside Lost Lake much because I played Second Life once in the past, before.  For every clean area that I randomly wandered into, there were ten more unsupervised dirty areas with people sporting ... interesting accessories.

Second Life can be a very clean and fun environment, if you know where you're going and you don't deviate from that path.  The way I see it, each person that owns a landmass governs their own landmass by their own rules.

Then there's the fact that Second Life is simply so much more versatile... it's aptly named - you can do freakin' anything...
