Title: 09/28/08 [DMFA #939] - Newton Strikes Again
Post by: Ren Gaulen on September 28, 2008, 09:48:21 PM
I think Fi has found gravity at the most inconvenient time. :[ But at least Dan managed to do something that looked really badass! :>

A badass moment indeed. Curse you Fi for ruining it!

A "productive and hopefully awesome" week? Good luck, Amber!

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Fi ruined the badass moment, since Dan went back to his normal, non-badass mode before Fi landed on him. :P

True, panels 1-4 were badass, it went back to normal at 5, then back to basics at 6 and 7.

Fi moving at 9.8 m/s, sounds like fun.
If I knew the mass we could see how much force he applied to Dan's cranium/neck. Actually we could do it from weight, get mass by extrapolation and then get force. Or use a direct conversion formula.
Include friction variables and we could even see how much force Dan's wings resisted while descending. :)

Huh, I wonder if Furrae uses Standard or Metric? :tmyk

Er, don't you mean that Fi was accelerating at 9.8 meters per second per second

Before you say I'm too picky, I have seen worse from engineering students in college.  I especially liked the one who got the wrong answer using the wrong method, and wanted to know if he could get partial credit.  (Even if he had been using the right method, he would have gotten the wrong answer since his math was wrong.)  I just hope that he isn't now designing the planes that we fly.

XD that was perfection.  I was especially happy to see Dan really flying (or at least really using his wings) in the comic.  And the lighting was great too!
Good luck with whatever awesome you're preparing Amber.

Apologies. It has been sometime since I've actually applied the terminology and equations. I could do the basic math, but nothing like calculus.
I actually was thinking acceleration but I misspoke. Common when I'm in a slight rush.

I'm curios to know how you know how fast Fi was accelerating? And about How Dan fells about losing those few feathers when Fi landed on him.

I guess the problem is that we really don't know how strong the gravity is in Furrae.  We can assume that's within an order of magnitude of Earth since larger variations would cause differences in the anatomy of the various inhabitants.

Calculation of acceleration and velocity would require time references, and we really don't know how long a span of time is covered by the images.

Actually, I saw an article that they did best for a range of heights starting at about two or three foot.  At lower elevations, they don't have time to turn around.

By the way, if forewarned is forearmed, does that mean that four armed is forewarned.  If so, we should check with the four armed dancer to see what will happen.

In an Ideal word, all objects fall at the same rate. That's how they knew how fast Fi should have been accelerating. Friction with the Air (Wind resistance) is only thing that would have slowed him down.

Well half the 'laws of aerodynamics' aren't actually right anyway, and the other half are just right enough to tell us that we don't actually know why aeroplanes fly, so i wouldn't worry too much if he's designing aircraft.

It's also reasonable to assume that Furrae would have the same gravity (in the natural parts at any rate) as Earth, hence why we know that Fi would have been accelerating at approximately 9.8 meters per second per second, we don't know what his terminal velocity is though.

Dan got to show off his skills and look all badassey while doing it only to have it ruined by his new tag-along.
Could be worse... Mab could have decided to come along and landed on his head with her head.  I doubt his opinion of being burried under girls would apply then.

Dan is using Heroic physics, and Fi, as the designated sidekick/comedy relief, is basically using the Rule of Funny.

Nope, not flying, if anything, they were spread enough to slow his descent. And most of his manoeuvring (flips) probably had little to do with the wings.

Well it wouldn't hurt such much if you didn't keep getting thrown down.

Anyway, I have to wonder, why is there nothing dangerous at the bottom?  There should be some sort of spikes/dangerous creatures/lava at the bottom of all trap doors!  But, I guess that's what you get for settling for the lowest contractor.

Maybe Dark Pegasus doesn't think he needs such cliche traps, remember how he felt about the dark rooms. Besides what could be more cruel than landing and breaking your feet and dying out of thirst and hunger in a dark damp hole(though in a world where most creatures can fly that kinda looses its usefullness)

Well, I'm sure there are SOME dangerous things that could've been at the bottom that haven't been cliched too badly yet....  Like below-freezing sea water.  Or acid goo.  Or poisonous gas.  Or electrified flooring.  The possibilities are endless.

It's part of their job description, I think. See the Furrae edition of the Bible; Book of Genesis:

Amber said, "Let us make Creatures similar to Demons and Angels, but with extra wings for kicks, and let them rule over the fandom because they are quite awesome and have a truckload of advantages." And Amber created the Cubi race and gave us Dan, Abel and Fa'Lina. And Amber saw that it was good.

Then Amber said, "The Cubi race is slightly overpowered, so they shall have silly sidekicks." And Amber created the Warp-Aci; floating, glowing entities of chaos and confusion with a short attention span and comedic timing. And Amber saw that it was good.

The problem with that is the high-res versions will never look nearly as nice as the compressed versions. Part of the reason the art looks smooth is because when I resize everything, it smooths out all the rough edges.  A full sized version would look pixelly and mediocre at best.

Ah, pity.  I assumed the original was 4x the size or more... if it's only 2x or something, then no, it's not going to work as well.

The problem with that is the high-res versions will never look nearly as nice as the compressed versions. Part of the reason the art looks smooth is because when I resize everything, it smooths out all the rough edges.  A full sized version would look pixelly and mediocre at best.

Guess we'll have to wait for the next wallpaper war :) And wait we will!

I was bored. :B

Something, indeed. =3 It's a little dark, though. Hey..if Amber doesn't mind..I could re-draw the scene in a wallpaper size. >_>

I was especially happy to see Dan really flying (or at least really using his wings) in the comic.

Nope, not flying, if anything, they were spread enough to slow his descent. And most of his manoeuvring (flips) probably had little to do with the wings.

Even flightless birds will use their wings for balance and aiding maneuvering.  So I would imagine that he would use his wings to control his attitude when falling without even thinking about it.

It's a weight thing.

The weight of the wings is enough to flip the rest of his body around them.

The surface area, and hence wind resistance, is merely a bonus to that...

At times I can't help but compare Fi to a burnt version of Gir from the best cartoon ever Invader Zim.

Made a quick Wallpaper Sized (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v95/madmann135/comic%20related/Dan_Land.jpg?t=1222804870) image from this comic.

Yes it is a little edgy but that can be fixed with some time and an immage modifyer program

Enlarging images does one of two things without additional image processing, either shows jaggies as the pixels are enlarged or smooths them, making it look fuzzy.

Also, it makes the JPEG artifacts really come out.  Especially Madmann's version, since he saved it as a JPEG too, so you've got two generations of distortion.

If I have time tonight - which is unlikely - I'll see if I can do a cleanup job on it.  This will be more difficult than with Disasters etc, since the improved shading means more colour levels to take into account.

I said it was a quick enlargement.
in fact I jumped it from 72dpi to 300dpi.
