Title: Skins War
Post by: Darkmoon on September 11, 2008, 09:34:58 PM
Go hit the DMFA site to read about the Skins War. All proceeds to benefit the Amber.

*edit from Damaris*

It's important to note that even though Darkmoon and Bunny of CVRPG are currently representing the side of evil, all the skins will be DMFA themed.  The characters featured will just depend on which side wins.

We hope this is a good enough incentive- we wanted to give back to the people who help the sister out, and no one wants to see us try to draw.  :U

Great idea, Darkmoon! *goes to cast his vote* Like I'd tell you guys who I voted for.

EDIT: Hey, I just realized that this is my first "war" on the forums. How do these usually go? Are friendships destroyed for all time, or do people come together in camaraderie for the betterment of all?

really, it comes down to the fact that we only have Dan and Mab in sprite form, which is why other characters were used ;)

I will try my best to save something from my paycheck this Thursday to make a donation.

*Crosses her fingers for the Evil Side*

Come on.. we see the cute side all the time.. and heck I am willing to bet that even  the evil side will be cute to an extent.

I don't recall if the donation only goes to  evening the immediate score of if it's held back to even the score at the end of the war...

At the risk of sounding like a complete brainless noob, can someone please tell me what the skins are/what they're used for? I know it says they're for the site and forums, but...
Title: Re: Skins War
Post by: Darkmoon on September 12, 2008, 02:59:00 PM
The site currently is purple. By applying a skin, it would make the purple skin look like something else. It could just be a color swap (like a lot of the skinds here at the forum), or it could be a new layout as well. Depends on how it's done.

As an FYI, Amber is taking the machine in for servicing. She doesn't know exactly what's going on, but the donations have helped to take the pressure off.

But the race of Cute v Evil is still on!

Is Fa'lina(I'm hopeless on this topic) considered evil? Cause if she is, then to hell with goodness >:]

I dunno, actually. That would be one for Mabby to decide. I know that she has certain characters in mind for Team Evil.

That reminds me of the old Mae West line:  "When I'm good, I'm very, very good.  When I'm bad, I'm better".

Oh.. here is an idea.. if there is a tie at the end she could do one half evil, and the other half good kinda mixing in the middle...

Then she could put the "Middle road" people like Kira and Fa'lina in the middle..

Okay... but it'd have to be a perfect tie. 1 buck in either direction won't do it.

Please keep in mind, guys, this is NOT a wallpaper war.  This is a war for custom skins that will be implemented into a new version of the website, as well as on the forum.

I'm only posting this because I don't want people to be disappointed.

Regina is actually part of the secret Team Pink that consists of her, Fa'Lina, and Deebs.

It's top secret though and I doubt anyone is gonna unlock that battle-mode anytime soon. :U

Technical question:
According to the post, at least as I interpreted it, the website(www.missmab.com) will have multiple skins. How will this be set up? Will you have a selector and the selected skin stored as a cookie on users computers, or will it be simply a URL arguement(E.G. http://www.missmab.com/index.php?skin=evil)?

Also, last I heard, there was no PHP or dynamic content involved, and Amber was simply editing the source code in notepad/a text editor.
Will the multiple skins either A, use a server-side dynamic set up, B, simply have multiple pages, and Amber is stuck with editing two or three pages for each update with the same data, or C, we have one page, like it is now, and all skin stuff is done client-side with Javascript?

Sadly, I have no money(not a cent available to me now), so I cannot donate anything, but I am perfectly willing to donate time - If there is anything I can do, just ask.

Thanks,

-RobbieThe1st

Its not going to be two skins, just one, either good, or evil, Or maybe the mixed one if there is a tie..

Someone liked my mixed theme idea..  :mowhappy :mowdizzy

This has not yet been decided.

We'll see what happens when we get to looking at the code, and figuring out how we can make it happen.

The site will undergo a recode, one way or another, though. With the way the site currently is setup, the skins would be hard to implement -- much harder than if we just recoded the beast with extensibility in mind.

Here's the good news. Neither does Darkmoon. ;-]

In all honesty, it'll be Mab art on the site, not DM art. Probably. There may be a few things DM does, but the overall look will be a Mabby look, not a ICVD or CVRPG look.

... unless we get really inspired. In which case you don't have to use that theme...

Well! I have to say the skin war has been a smashing success already. Amber's got more than enough for a veerrrry nice tower... but don't stop!! I want DMFA to come from a supercomputer setup! Mwahahaha!!

I like how somone donated for Abel, despite the conspicuousness of his absense. Shows devotion, that does. And perhaps a wee bit of desperate hope.

Ill-advised hope, certainly.

Minishear: You have established neither a capacity for intelligence nor an understand of tact in your brief time here on the forums. I'm not defending him (despite the fact that were related) but I'm just gonna say you may be wasting valuable time to do other things, by telling him that. You could tell him his life was in danger when it really was, and he would just shrug it off. Why? Don't ask me. Course you could always send him a link to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2l3GhjARt0) song just to screw with him. >:3

Whether he takes heed or not is not the concern. It's a warning, the first step to further action.

Further action will probably wound up being taken. In fact it's almost a certainty. He seems to disregard any warning thrown at him. All I really have to say is, "Four posts and he already screwed up? Damn." But I'll shut up.

I wouldn't think I'd have to explain the difference between drawing and layout. Amazingly, the fact that you don't know the difference leaves me with the feeling that I don't have to care about explaining it. Excellent.

Of course you don't need to explain it, if people donate money for something they don't understand, it's not your problem. Besides everyone will see the results eventually and hopefully things will be made clear then.

I only have one thing to say abou this:
http://alterationa.deviantart.com/art/Wallpaper-Wars-DeM-Poster-98037736
And I do this only to be funny. I really would have donated about... *counts balance*... $70 to theme cute, but then I realized my funds are being monitored by Child Protection Services and I already blew $140 over a lost cell phone and $180 on Rock Band, and I don't think I can explain a $70 deficit donating to an online webcomic... I'll make it up when I get a job.

To some it depends on your definition of "hot" but I'd have to agree with you, and for some, the fact that she is really the only "naked" character helps assert that fact. :) And she knows it as stated here (http://missmab.com/Demo/Fashion04.php). Or at least she feels it. :3

And yes I'd have to say she is also cute. And as for that little plushie of Dan she has, it only helps the fact that she has a crush on Dan... well for me anyway.

Yeah, that seems about the right thing to say. Sprite comics (to some) may be "old" but I dont see that as a reason to bash them, cuz ya kinda were, Alterationartist. And hey as long as they're funny, its OK. And I should read CVRPG, although I question if my attention span will allow me to read from the 1'st to latest comic.

That last one is a sprite comic I did myself. Little did I realize that I erased them so long ago. Curse Photobucket required pic posts. It was well received for something that barely made it past 30 comics, but now, as it is for sprite comics, "It's just another one for the pile." In fact, that thread(the entire site is dead now, it's been replaced) was buried under around 330 other topics, all comics. And it didn't even end there! I still read most of the sprite comics that I used to way back then, and have even been disappointed by eventual demises, such as Wario Comix 5, Mobius Strip, Mushroom Kingdom Hearts, and so many others that I got bored with like Nintendo Hogs and AkumaTH's comics. I wasn't bashing them, just thinking, "Oh, another one. Well, let's take a look and see what we got here..."
Speaking of which, I need to finish my critique-ing...

How... did you mix those two together?

No. I had an odd personality back then and liably still do. And CPS is only monitoring my bank account because all the money I have to my name is given to me by them. They like to know what I'm spending it on, even if they don't necessarily have a say in what I spend it on, as long as my ends meet, which they do. Very well, in fact. I have phone, electric, groceries, and rent all taken care of. Everything left over is surplus. Sweet, sweet surplus. Which is why I ALMOST donated $70.

In my comics defense, few develop the archive of comics CVRPG has.

True, but truth be told, when it comes to hosting sprite comics, an archive becomes more of a measure of the author's persistence than it's quality. Yours is great. It appeals to me as a gamer, an RPG-lover, and as a normal person, but I have seen grade F crap that has broken a couple hundred comics, until the author eventually said F' it and stopped. And i have of course seen many comics break even beyond your archive. WTF might be racing you, while AkumaTH's Comics have broken and continue beyond 1000, not to mention it's crossovers and spin-offs. But it's not to say that all of them are gold. They have their fillers, their tie-over jokes and such, but really, no single comic or group of comics determines the ENTIRE comic's worth. I will also say one last thing: Keep going. You're doing great so far.

I don't have time to read yet another archive... there's still about 20 in my queue ;_;

Anyway, 'fluffy pink bunny' wasn't added to the list, but neutral went up by $10 which is what I donated. So... no chance of a pink bunny skin then? ;_;

For a means of implementing multiple appearances of the web site, look at http://www.marx-brothers.org/links.htm (http://www.marx-brothers.org/links.htm).  In addition, looking at the filler comic with Abel, Jyrras, and Deathbringer, this site brings to mind the classic question: Why a duck?

In todays News Amber says that voting for characters won't affect the cute/evil war, and as such is more or less equivalent to "neutral".

I tend to disagree. Both "cute" and "evil" are pretty abstract concepts and when you sit down to actually make this wallpaper you will need a more concrete idea of what to draw.  That is when the characters come in.

The current leading character is Mathilda.  I am sure she can do both "cute" and "evil" with conviction.  This is true for several of the others too.

(For the record, I have no money to spare and have not voted for anything)

Title: Re: Skins War
Post by: Mao on September 23, 2008, 10:30:58 AM
I think there's a few things being over looked here:

1)This war isn't being done by Amber.  It was being done by the code and graphics monkies who will be doing the themes.

2)It's for a theme/skin (as mentioned by Keaton and others), not a wallpaper.  While it is possible  to do a theme centered around a character, it's a lot easier to do a concept based one.  This also means that less drawing will be involved. (Though I know damn well that design work can involve almost as much work as any character sketch).

3)It's never been mentioned once that I'm aware of that these skins would even have characters involved with them, so the character votes were for all intents and purposes donations for something that wasn't a choice... which is the same as no choice.  Aka:  Neutral.

Anyway, I'm sure everything that I've just said has been covered already and by those who are far more eloquent than myself but I thought that it might help things to have a summary present.

More donations to add to the pile of money, the way I see it.

Especially if a single character DOES power over the thousand, but I don't think any millionaires read DMFA... yet. *snerk*

if that does happen in about 3 days, there will likely be a $900 excess for Amber and a few happy (if not gullible) customers. And at this rate, we are now literally paying you for this, considering the amount donated for DMFA characters.

So, apparently Evil won, with $1115. Cute got $1089.99. However, that doesn't add up to $2734, what about the various other votes(or even just neutral)? Does that get added to even out things(I recall something about that)?  I am just wondering..

Votes for "balance" get added to even things out. Votes for random other things, or "neutral", get put into the pot in the middle, which does nothing for either side.

Make sense?

Yes. Votes for silly things or neutral aren't votes, they're donations, pure and simple.

Exactly. There were people who just donated but didn't say where they wanted them to go. Those were neutral. Up until the donation war ended, they would have been allowed to "cast" that vote afterwards... but they didn't.

One person donated 50 buck to try for a tie, but by that point Evil had too much of a lead.

I'm not sure that I would view Dark Helmet as the erudite wise man I would base my actions on.  In the end, he couldn't even steal an escape pod.

Besides when evil wins, they always rewrite the history books to show how they were the good ones.  Therefore, the history books indicate that good always wins, because the winners declare themselves good.  (I don't know.  Is that an evil thing to do?)

Oh well.  At least they didn't have to face the killer peeps of doom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peeps).  (I didn't make that one up.  They were the product of the slightly demented, or at least fermented, mind of a dungeonmaster in a D&D game.)  They encased people in candy, but nobody alive knows what happened then.

I never dropped any food on the table.  However, somebody could have dropped a five course dinner on the board and it would have gone unnoticed.  The peeps were represented by some small markers.  Full sized peeps would have been out of scale.

However, this discussion does bring new meaning to the term "food fight".

when my older sister was in highschool, she was an aid for a science teacher,a nd got to do her own experimends when not needed for test grading and such.  She melted and recast many gimmi bears into new and interesting shapes using the bunsen burners and small metal dishes.
