With all the discussion of fancy shmancy computer games out there, I was wondering if anyone liked to play the ULTIMATE classic, chess. (I suppose checkers is older than chess, but I can't beat my brother at it......... You know what, this side thought is ending now).

Anyway, this is kinda an open invite to anyone who would be interested in playing me, or really anyone else they might meet on this site,  either real time over some server, or through correspondance. I'm roughly a 1750 USCF player, if that makes sense to you.

No sense at all.

Haven't played for years, not since I played my sister at it. Got her in Scholars Mate. Set up again, got her again. Set up again, got her again. Set up again, showed her how it worked. Then got her again.

She never played chess with me again. I have no idea why... ;-]

Hmmm, I have a few ideas. I spend most of my time at school, where I can get limited internet access for free, so I can't always load certain programs onto their comps. That being said, I can play on either www.chess.com (If you like correspondance chess) or yahoo.com if you have an account there. MSN has a chess program if you'd be willing to add me to a contact list, but I'm not 100% sure I can run that on a school computer.

Of course, I'm perfectly willing to shout moves back and forth along a thread, but I've since noticed that not too many people seem to know notation systems, or are willing to keep a set-up board near their computer for days at a time to play like that.

I'd be ok with just shouting moves back and forth, especially since I use a Mac and don't think that the MSN chess will work.  Or we could shout the moves back and forth via MSN.  Whichever you prefer.

More seriously, I'd be willing to do correspondence; I'm usully too busy to play a full game, but can find a few minutes here and there to look and think. And I'd be happy to find a chessboard and set it up...

Mac OSX comes with a chess game, and you can save games.  So I think I'll do it that way.

I would have thought my colour would be obvious, Corgatha. Given what colour is on e2... ;-] And no, you didn't spell it right; there's no I at the front. Not that anyone else does any better, mind. *grin*

You're not being a pain. Nothing to apologise for, really. An emoticon is the ";-]" construct, or the :cry item. Basically, a small ascii or graphical picture to add emphasis or emotion to an otherwise bland textual experience.

Everywhere I've seen, all I need is the origin for the piece and the + to signify check, but I'll do it that way.

I like the long algebraic method because it allows for greater precision. Play a king and queens endgame and you get a *lot* of checks, many of which can come from any angle of the board. Sorry for misinterpreting though.

A slight one. I wasn't crazy about the Na7 move. Now that guy is stuck, and while I don't think I can hold the b6 pawn that keeps him undefended, he can't really get out easily either. I think had you retreated him back to c3, your position would have been equal.

If you want brutal honesty, you're down a piece for no compensation. Being an entire
Bishop down puts you in more or less a hopeless position, unless I make an idiotic blunder and give the material back. Taking with the rook is probably the best move you had available (not taking means I'm two pieces up as my knight runs away, and taking with the king makes it hard to activate your remaining rook) but at this point, it's probably too little, too late.

Are you certain you want to resign? You can play Qxe6, something takes the queen, and then hxg to have a piece and a rook for the queen. Not great, but not resignworthy........

I've done some calculations and just about every move I play now loses. I would rather not drag on a piece-down grind with no compensation.

I came up with some lines, none of them go anywhere.
Qxe6, Bxe6,.... and I'm down a Queen for a Rook with no compensation
Ba5, Qxa5, Qb4, Qxb4, xb4, Rxe2,.... down 2 pieces.
Qd3, Bf5, I lose the queen by force.
It's a lost cause, I made a critical error in not playing d5 sooner to give myself some space. I'm kind of upset that I didn't see such a simple thing.
Regardless, I would be up for another game, you can have white this time.

this kind of chess can play but i can't just visualize the moves like you all were doing.

i did make a mistake  that should be Bd4-b2 not d2. ie i was taking your pawn as for my marking i was just copying your last post and adding my move to it. like so

yes you are correct i'm bad with notation recording.i pressed the move when i saw how intent you were on castling. if i had taken the pawn then you would have taken it with the queen followed by me taking the night with you using the bishop to block i would then have taken the pawn and you would have moved the queen again form my  a queen exchange but too may lost pieces to simply stop you form castling. yet now i think my first strategy would have been better. go fig. sleep revives the mind but idlest the thoughts.  downs side  of the first is that it would have taken a like time as well. and would have been and bigger war of attrition then we just fought. this way you still have some more power pieces to work with.

You could do what I do. I have a chess program here with the board set out, and I merely decide what move to make, move the piece, then look at the recording bit at the bottom that tells me what move I made...

To E_Voyager. The higher up you ascend the chess ladder, the less and less games you see ending in checkmate. If you take all the World championship games since 1886, there has been one, and only one game that ended in checkmate. (About half of them are draws, and the other half someone resigns). The better players get, the more they see when a game has descended into terminal area. If you don't look at the current game that I played with Kobra, but the one before, you'll see I resigned when he had a forced mate in 5. There wasn't really any reason to drag it out, when we both know what's going to happen next. The only reason to fight on would be on the incredibly off chance that he owuldn't see the continuation, and as you play better and better people, that simply doesn't happen.

Corgatha Taldorthar i understand what you're saying but i try to  keep the game interesting were it can got either way until i'm ready for the kill. if i'd played as llearch suggested i could have had the game over in less the then the 37 moves it took. perhaps as few as 25. my favorite games were the ones i used to play when on the the plays form themselves such in a no win situation smother but the on pieces with mate less then 2 moves away before the realized it was coming. now those were fun games. i haven't played on of them in a while. but i'm up to play again if i can find my last two pawns.

I don't really think I can hold it regardless, after Nc6, D4xe5, Re8, Re1... you can still take, a pawn and a queen for a knight and a rook is a good swap. I could play F4 at some point but that leaves my king ridiculously exposed.
