Title: Truman Show Delusion
Post by: shadowterm on July 19, 2008, 11:37:27 PM
Apparently a new type of dementia is being named after the movie "the Truman Show" for patients belief that they are on a 24/7 TV show. I think it's actually quite common for mild cases, but the more extreme ones cited in the article here: http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=665015 (http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=665015) are slightly more concerning. Personally, I think I might have an extremely mild case. It can get stronger at times when I'm under stress though.

Your thoughts?

(also, the movie was pretty awesome.)

Ah, you're on to us! Okay guys, show's over! My name isn't really Jairus, I'm actually Cranston Snord: you've never heard of me, don't worry.

Seriously, I've actually sometimes wondered if people had this problem. Myself, I've always had the feeling that if there is some form of supernatural deity (big IF in my case) then half of the crap that goes on down here is just for their giggles. But to be honest, this whole disorder sounds like some kind of... crud, the phrase escapes me... delusion of grandeur! As if the whole world exists for your sole benefit, and everyone is just reacting to you... actually, I think that all of us believe that at some level or another.

exactly, and the deities doing everything for poops and giggles is pretty much my assumption too. Though, also not believing in them, I am a little biased. Honestly, I think that, due to there being nothing existing at the beginning of the universe, you can't measure time. Basically the smallest and largest time scales can be defined as the period before actual existence. and as, obviously, our universe was possible, it eventually happened.

... are we talking about the Truman Show Disorder, or a philosophical debate that may never be settled?

point. It does, however slightly point to the illusion of grandeur shared by the people with the disorder. They believe they are the center of attention. They differ, however, in that they do not feel in control of this world they are center of, but rather the most manipulated of all.

Carrey was fantastic.

On topic, maybe. I sometimes think that people are talking about me for some reason. Only when they are pretty inaudible. It's strange.

I think everyone is a little paranoid at that level. Oh, and Carrey was a great actor in all his movies. Batman, less, but still a good performance.

One of my favorite movies of all time, but I'll be damned if I can remember anything about the soundtrack.

What do furries do when they're alone? You watch Disney movies and cuddle with plushies. Big freaking deal. Although in your case sometimes you cuddle a plushy modeled after your avatar. Currently you are reading this post and wondering if I'm either insane or genuinely watching you. Don't go bug eyed: it might stick that way.

You can blame Disney for anything. The best part is they're usually guilty in some way. I hate Disney now, but when I was a kid I watched their movies all the time. I blame fox and the hound, and my parents/grandparents making it the first Disney movie besides Dumbo I remember watching.

Back on topic, no I don't remember the soundtrack either, but the movie was great regardless, and it's not amazing it inspired a mental disorder.

Well, I may not have watched a Disney movie in a while, but why do you hate it?

And for the record, no, I'm not a furry. Just like that one poster's sig says. I'm a fan of DMFA and fantasy, and that's what I'm going as to Anthrocon '09.

The same thing I imagine everyone else does when they're alone. If you want to quibble over details like the content of the porn, that's your problem.  :P

and fleeing from the giant green diamond

"Oh God... it's there again?"
"What's there?"
"The floating diamond... it's above that girl over there now... oh God, it's moved over to her boyfriend! Augh! It's coming this way!"
