I was wondering about the whole concept of Karma... what is it there for? (besides ego boosts or lowerings)
*shrugs*
Well, I would look up karma on Wikipedia to see if it refrences anything useful, but I just don't care enough.
don't know, but it's formatting reminds me of M:TG cards.
Wiki:
Karma is a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. The effects of all deeds actively create present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain in others. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one's present life and all past and future lives as well.
The "Law of Karma" is central in Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, & Jainism. (These religions were formed in India). All living creatures are responsible for their karma - way of life - and for their release from samsara.
Seems that someone cares enough... but I'm not sure that sheds much light on what this Internetified karma is/does.
My guess is that it's supposed to make people reflect over their actions and how they will be treated with a bad reputation that will forever stay under their name.
Basically, be good or you won't have the score to get into heaven.

Well I really can't see it making people reflect on their actions. On HomeRecording, you have to say
why the karma has been awarded. Here, it's completely anonymous. Tezkat for example, has been smitten nine times as of this count, for no reason that I can understand, unless people have been using him to test the system, which in itself is bad karma.

I think its because the rate at which karma can be re-used on this forum for one person is insane. People don't tkae karma serious wenn one person kan give them 10 points of bad karma in an hour. (not to mention the other thing i've been saying al along about the karma system.)
I think we'd be beter of modeling the karma system after Hellbounds. (A karma point a day. 24 hours)
Oh noes! The smiting! :eek Have my enemies followed me here to thwart my secret plans to take over the world? ;) If they make me angry, I'll do mean things to them, George, like stroke their fur the wrong way... :twisted
Seriously... the karma system here is pretty useless (I mean... more than usual for a BBS karma system :rolleyes). One rating per person might give you a vague and relatively meaningless measure of how many people like/dislike you. Something that refreshes ten times an hour just tells you how much free time they have on their hands. :laugh
Remember that elitism thing I keep talking about?
:yeahthat
So what if you get undeserved negative karma? If you aren't banned or being warned by da modz, then it's just a number.
It should be everybody's mission to garner more negative karma than Darkmoon :3
It is what you make it out to be, though considering the way the community has functioned in the past, it can and probably will just be the thing people do to people that are disliked as a whole.
I've already decided to ignore karma for the most part. I may issue karma cookies on the APF thread but hey, you are getting a cookie!
As you can surmise, karma is just another tool to have fun, and representative of anything you wish. With the exception of Darkmoon and Quientin, you can assume most of the people with vast negative Karma are not to be trusted...
...you people are so mean. D:
But think about this. I have some negative karma, so you shouldn't trust anything I say either.
(sorry, Damaris on the wrong computer)
Karma is solely for fun and amusement. It is not meant to be reflectory of a particular poster's ideas or such. We kept it because we liked having something official on the forum that said "smite."
Well, thesaurus.reference.com does list "drives bananas" as a possible synonym for smite :laugh

I think maybe the muffins are coming back to bite me?
It seems people have been both applauding me and smiting me several times. I still think it doesn't make much sense if you don't know who did it, or what for, so... if anyone has something to say about my posts, please say it to me. It will work much better than karma, definitely.
I really wouldn't worry too much about the opinions/feelings behind an applaud/smite. I'm 95% sure my negative is due to Dmoon's sense of humour...though it sort of defeats the purpose of anyone who would actually try to smite me as a means of lashing out.
I'm willing to bet than in a week or two's time no one is really going to care either way...save for new people who join and don't realize that the karma lacks any importance.
yeah, only the cool kids in town get ridiculously low karma because they don't caaaaare (and actually have some sense of vicious humour :ghosthouse )
Neato. I'll just make sure to tell Ms Gabi about anything I smite her for, then?
Yes, llearch. If you're going to smite me, at least take the time to write a descriptive summary of your smiting reasons. And no copy/pasting either. :P
Oh, Mabby- it's not 95% of it... I'd say Darkmoon is responsible for at least 99% ;)
how would you go about getting good karma?
By making interesting, amusing or informative posts which serve to better the entire world, or failing that at least make someone out there a little bit happier.

I mainly "applaud" because I feel like it, not because of what I think of something/one.
Well, I would request that you ... smite me, smite me, smite me! Then, those who base opinions around karma will view me as Victor von Doom and that would be groovy.
Though, I have to say, we'd also need to pump the positive side of somebody's karma in order to balance things out. What's a von Doom without a Reed Richards to go along with it?
Then the forum's Reed and I could have debates about the existentialist nature of bunnies.
I like the concept... it's fun.*smites and applauds at will* I already know I'm goin' down... *sings 'Highway to Hell* at maximum pain-causing eardrum-imploding vampire-angering volume*

It's just a shame I can't smite myself, repeatedly.

*smites Rowne* Thou shalt not attempt smite suicide!
What I find funny is that I seem to have an equal karma rating, through and through. One can't help but wonder where the positive karma is coming from. I boggle at the thought that some people might actually be entertained by my assinine posts.
Karma is a fascinating thing, it'll be interesting to see how mine goes. So far I almost have a harmonious balance. What will happen next? Only time will tell.
Karma dosn't really do anyhtin with me. I think it ignors me. that or I do too many good things.
I already seem to have people out for me. This system is way too easy to abuse.
I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously though. After all, if I had my way I'd have -10,000 karma and that would be bandied around as a badge of pride. At the moment though, I'm 8 for 8. Which I suppose means I've attained some zen-like level of balance and does little for my dreams of becoming the karmic version of good ol' Lennisher.
It's the good karma that worries me, people are actually applauding my incessant ramblings. And I have no idea why! Either that or there are simply folks who're randomly clicking on the applaud and smite buttons, I find this easier to believe.
Anyway, if the negative karma bothers ya. I'll wing a positive point your way.
I heard something in passing about karma balancing itself out. Meaning, if you get bad karma now, you're bound to have good karma later and vice versa. I don't know if this is "true" ("accepted" is more the word) or not.
Note, Karma does not apply to video game AI.

I have to level with you Damaris, the reason I think this is simply because I trust the denizens of this board. With a few rare possible exceptions, I just don't think people here would actually take a vendetta against a person seriously. Most of them are either too silly or just too nice. That's what Amber gets for creating a comic that largely promotes a goodwill atmosphere though. So I blame her. Probably.
For me, it's not so much that I know the karma system isn't meant to be taken seriously but more that I really do know that nobody here is going to take it seriously, I also know that this is your intent too. So I have absolutely no reason to take it seriously myself and I still want my -10,000 karma. How can I talk about being hit by a karma nuke if I only have -9 karma? I'm a karma weenie.
Anyway, yeah, I think everyone's going to warm up to it being silly in time because nobody here has the capacity to take it seriously. Still, if you really want to host something that's completely pointless, you should host a variant of Legend of the Green Dragon. *Cough.*
There is a point when the horse is so dead that hitting it with the whip is just pointless...
Well, unless you have some kind of fe-- okay, nevermind.
Then there's the opposite way of looking at things that sometimes, there's absolutely no point in pointing out a dead Horse until everyone else realizes that, thus the best way to combat a Horse necropsy is to just jump in there and over-exaggerate the heck out of it until everyone else realizes it was a dead Horse.
Was I doing that? I'm not saying.
See, what karma does, is everytime it's mentioned, god kills a kitten. I ask you to stop killing my cat brethren. Please? We're running out of kitties.
I'm sure people are around to make sure everybody has some negative karma. I already seem to have some probably just because my record was too clean or something. If you do that, I'd have to kill you.
They are funny quotes, no doubt about it.
As for the karma, the thing is, you have to count on the fact that there are always invisible aliens (or trolls) who'll vote with negative karma no matter what, so it can never be a true representation of how people feel about you.
Personally, I don't think anyone really dislikes anyone on these boards. I happen to like you mana because yes, you have a funny sig but most importantly, you're honest about how you feel on any given topic and I respect that.
Lots of people I like here for myriad reasons, actually.
Though I admit, I've been slightly negative here and there to rile up the invisible aliens to see whether I can rack up my goal of having a negative score of 50,000 karma. Apparently it wasn't working, so I gave up. It seems that I shall forever have a near zen-like balance to my karma. For I am the internet equivalent of a bonsai tree.
Anyway, in my personal opinion, nullus anxietas in regards to the karma. It can't be a true representation of how people feel if people who don't give a damn about how they feel are allowed to vote. So it's all just silly.
Now just watch as people raise mine up to +20/-20 [relevant at the time of posting] just to taunt me. My karma will forever be a font of mediocrity!
---- Edit
Today on karma-watch:
See? It's exactly as I said! My karma is already evening out.

I have one thing to say.
Gah!
Tis important to keep as many forumites karma levels neutral! if too many are unbalanced then the forum will implode into a blackhole, for reason i will not go into at this time!
in that case, we'll have to kill amber and damaris to save the world, cause that's where the big imbalances are, and i'm afraid it may be too late to right it...
edit: holy crap, never mind that, i just realized darkmoon is the cause of it! just look at that karma count! >_>
Karma appears to be a toy to most people, who use it religiously for the slightest feeling of passion or hatred towards the person.
People either applaud me for taking initiative or they just like how my name looks on the screen, or they smite me for spelling something wrong on purpose. I think people use the modifier out of context, and yields incorrect results. From what I can tell already on this board, no one should have more negative points then positive on the modifier.
I personally try to post only important and relevant posts to the subject or thread. I do not like to post small little sentences unless it carries a strong message, so for the rest I write paragraphs or something similar. That is one of the main reasons why I will not be that active in the community unless I have something to say, agree with, or disagree with. This may help or hinder me, some people thinking I'm self-centered, or even shy. Its all on the person's perspective.
As of now, I believe most people's karma display will be inaccurate to their personality and over-all being. I can gladly look at mine and feel happy that my karma is positive or feel a tad saddened by the negatives being the stronger of the two. Either way, I know it does not reflect who I am with complete accuracy.
So, in my opinion, the modifier is a tool that you can choose to heed and like all tools, it has its downsides.
what i wanna know is who gave me negative karma. I don't care and i'm not mad, just curious cause i find it funny. And Manawolf, did you get that quote about sexy women from Disgaea Hour of Darkness?
Sorry me again :P tis all equal now :3
Now look, since I posted that I was deducted 2 more karma points. My reason is valid.
I used to be that way too Forgotten, I've made my fair share of gargantuan posts both here and on plenty of other forums but it seems that at the end of the day, a forum is more akin to ye olde train station rather than an engaged classroom and self-expression can be as much about pointless silly as it can be about earth-shattering revelation or simple, ramblesome ponderings.
I suppose it all helps build the board's character because any forum is, as I said, a font of self-expression, a place for people, it has to be about people and there are a lot of different people out there with a lot of different ways to express themselves.
Whilst sitting around waiting for a train, there's room for polite conversation about everything, from the weather to shared commonalities or any particular person's destination. Someone might say something thought provoking and a debate might arise. In fact, this is something I remember about waiting for trains when I was younger, people sure spoke a lot.
I've loosened up a lot over time and I don't try to make every post I make absolutely gargantuan anymore because that's not what everyone is looking for, it's not that kind of atmosphere. It's more social than formal and that's what I've gotten used to and adjusted to.
After all, if I wanted to go for the big stuff all the time, there are other places for that but here I think I'll mix it up a bit and see what happens. Unless the local security guard stops by and tells me not to, o'course.
I'm not exactly looking to have a constant debate or post a massiv reply or thread. I like simple chat and replies too, but more often then not, I am not going to reply "lol [insert 10 smilies here]" and go onto the next victum that is another thread.
I wish for some somewhat structured talkings, be them laid back or completly goofy. I came onto this forum to be relaxed and just chat.
Yeah, ran out of steam on this one.
I can understand that. There's a crowd at this station though, however, the things you desire can be found. Just drag a few people off to a corner and make it so. There's room for everything here.
Though I admit, I'm not so much a fan of the LOL either. My excuse though is the ubiquitous nature of it, people seem to be drawn to the ever-growing anti-unique and LOL is the shirt-and-tie of today's internet.
Everyone who wants to fit in has one.
So on that count, I agree with you. That takes away from the personality of a board because absolutely anyone could post it. If that's what humanity boils down to then MegaHAL passes the turing test with flying colours.
I have to say this, though ...
Despite the fact that there is a crowd here, a big one, I see a lot of sapience and thought. There are many things that make me smile. There is little of the LOL, less of the ZOMG and almost none of the ROFLcakes. This pleases me in ways I cannot express. So I'd think that as far as this particular forum goes, we don't have to worry about that anyway.
Even if we did have a lot of that here (which we don't, as I can see) then we'd just have to accept it and carve out our own niche without destroying that which already exists. Whether people wish to be sapient or not is their choice and their choice alone.

So if you asks for being smitten you get smitten... or applauded. And if you don't ask for applauds you don't get applauded... or smitten but if you do ask for being ... you get... smitten... err...

this kinda reminds me of some child that wants to be bad, pretty much in the lines of
"Go clean your room."
"Nuh! I won't because I'm bad!"
".... What did I tell you about saying no to your parents? *slapslapslap* Now go clean your room, or no desert tonight."
"*child goes clean his sobbing*"

... Does that mean I should, or should -not- be begging?
I can't figure it out at all.. :-)

I think you can get any kind of karma regardless of whether you beg or not, but if you keep begging people will get annoyed and you may get less than friendly responses.
