The comedy with the hand spells has been going around for at least 26 years... especially at conventions.

For anyone who is reasonably familiar with... D&D, the wizards Bigby and Mordenkainen are Gygax's characters.

And according to the Epic Level Handbook, Mordenkainen seems to be a man who likes to foil things for both sides in a war, prolonging it into futility.  Not sure if that was Gygax's idea for the wizard though.
