I don't see these yet, but usually the wars got saved in the archives (near the bottom of the list).

Was anyone else immediately reminded of this mental own-foot-tripping-over (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_862.php) by Jyrras...?   ;)

Thanks for the hint! :mowhappy I just found out I may not have internet access for awhile starting sometime next week, and I didn't want to miss the war. They're so much fun!

I have been a lazy butt and havent gotten the energy to code up the archive segment for this particular war yet. I will likely do it at some point if llearch or Dmoon doesnt beat me to the punch.

I love how awkward Jyrras is, it's cute. o:
I also love how the boa was just left there on the girl's side. xD

Also: what kind of punch is it?
I like punch...

Dan vs Alyka..not how you'd think they'd meet eachother but it's entertaining.

As for the wallpaper war, I think team girl is going to win, though the month is still young anything can happen. The conversation between Jyrras and Abel is also seemingly interesting, suspense as to the question is somewhat evil.

I'm looking forward to the Abel story update, the normal comic update and the wallpaper update now..

Compared to the main story, this turns the tables on that pair, Abel going after Jyras instead of the other way. Though I haven't seen anything in the main strip to indicate that Abel knows of the attraction yet (Jyras still only pining for him).

It seems that that banner is actually pretty thick, since it would be pretty uncomfortable for Abel to hold a pose like that if it wasn't.

I'm pretty sure Abel already knows and is pretty much just waiting for Jyrras to say something..If not then the only other reason I can think of is that Abel has been anti-social for so long and since he tends to get along with Jyrras more than others and he's getting comfterable with being around him.

I could be wrong of course in fact there's proboblly a high chance of me being wrong but those are my thoughts on the matter.

Meh. Since I don't have access to the code, I can't beat you to the punch. OTOH, I -do- have the code working happily for the back end... so adding additional archives should be trivial...

As long as Mrs Williams saves the images, we can put it in fairly easily. ;-]

Are you saying that Abel has created his own brand of evil jerkdom?

However, I don't see Abel as coming on to Jyrras.

I don't think that Abel can read Jyrras's mind because I don't think he would deliberately do partial work.  However, I think that a few hundred years of living in SAIA have exposed to every sort of normal and deviant thought, and his experience lets him know exactly what Jyrras is saying.

Please notice what Abel is saying:  "Only if I can give an impersonal answer"

He isn't giving a "come hither" look.  He's giving a "Come on.  You've got to be kidding" look.

Lies! Lies I tell you! That expression is too smirky to be a "you've got to be kidding" expression. It seems to me that it is an "I know just what you're going to ask, and I am looking at you like this to make you hot-and-bothered" expression.

I don't think I've ever used the word "expression" that many times in one sitting.

My theories on Jyrras now are A) he'll suck it up and ask whatever he wants to know. B) chicken out and change the question. The tiny lettering I tried zooming in on but it didn't make it any clearer and there's proboblly very good reason as to why it can't be seen most likly as it may be repeated in visiable text for the next post. I seriously hope Jyrras doesn't shy away from whatever he's trying to ask..

Actually that's what i'm partially thinking wich is why I have a theorie he may shy out of asking the question and change the topic completely. Honestly I think he should just get it over with and ask but it's understandable to be cautious/shy with the topic as he has no idea as how Abel would react to the question. I think they'd be happy together but all things take time.

I actually think how their relationship is developing is very well done..I just think Jyrras should hurry up and ask.

I was thinking they were going to have this conversation in the main comic, however if they talk about all of that during this wallpaper war it saves alot of time. Of course I'd like to see them talk about it in the main comic as it gives their union more attention as well as a good background envirement.

Just because so many people were discussing it, I blew up the image to look at the word in question.  It is definitely a squiggle, although it could be described as a sinuous squiggle, if that means anything.

I don't think that we can exactly count the things in the Wallpaper war as being Canon in the sense that the characters will remember the actions in the comic.

I, too, have acquired the ability to speak 1 fonteese! :3

But seriously, what happens in Wallpaper Wars stays in Wallpaper Wars.
There's a big difference between speaking and understanding.

Bisexual, you say? Ohhh, you have no idea how well I'd be able to relate to Abel if that meteor hit...

But now that I think about it, Abel kind of seems the not-all-the-way-into-girls type. I don't think I've seen him show any suggestive emotions towards girls, but he seems a bit... nicer with Jyrras. The breakfast, the jacket, the new outfit. So much with Jyrras and so little with everyone else. Hating Dan, attempting to kill Pyroduck, Wildy's first meeting, Merlitz's first meeting, a hard distaste for Aaryanna, Mab and Alexsi are okay. But he went so far as to tolerate having his nose beeped by Jyrras when he would likely brutally threaten the rest after such an act. Why would he have this amount of tolerance with Jyrras, and so few else?

Oh dear... I seem to have been rambling...

I think you guys are kind of missing the point with Abel here. Basically, it seems to me that never mind whether he's inclined to be straight, gay, or bi, he's Just Not Interested Right Now. He doesn't even want to make any friends, remember? One such is not looking for a lover. Personally, I'd say that right now he's sort of asexual.

Interesting theory, but I don't think these are all the same thing.

I think Aary and he saw each other as rivals.  His meeting with Merlitz went bad because Merlitz attacked him. It would probably have gone a lot easier if that hadn't happened.  Alexsi simply scares him (she scares Dan too).  He seems to get on with Mab (if you met a Creature that could kill you in an instant, I don't think you'd try to make enemies with them), aside from the time Mab trapped him into becoming Merbel.

But he doesn't hate Dan.  Right now, Dan has upset him, and he has a bit of a grudge over the fact that Fa'Lina has forced him to become a teacher.  Additionally he seems to have little patience for fools (e.g. the Sucker Punch when Dan screwed up).  But hate, I'd say, is overstating it.

Apart from the baseball bat, pretty much everything he did in SAIA was to help him.  Remember how mad he was when Ink drove Dan catatonic?  If it was hate, he'd have pointed and laughed.  Even the paint was to stop him from going into a spiral of depression.
Pyro is part of that.  Abel was convinced that Pyro was sent to eliminate Dan as part of the Dragon-Cyra feud or whatever it is.  That - to save Dan - was, as far as I can see, his sole reason for trying to take Pyro down (which meant risking his own life).

The long chain of studdering continues, Abel looks bored, and Jyrras gets cuter the more he blushes.

To be honest, this is the first donation duel that I don't really want to pick a side.
If the guys won, I can take bride from being part of team testosterone and give a good slap from my john to anybody who doesn't own one.
But then again, the moment of glory will only last so far and I like to look the female characters a lot more than the male characters, so despite the fact that 'we' would have won, the prize would feel like you'd trade the washing machine & dryer -combo to a hand full of magic beans.
In the rare cases, like this one, my solution is to call this win-win-situation. What ever happens, I'll say that this is exactly what I wanted to happen and if someone says that this could also be lose-lose situation, I'll just shove fingers into my ears and won't listen to his/her insane mumbling.

Rambling Jyrras is adorable.
Which is unfortunate, because now I'm torn between having him ask properly and him continue being embarrassed and continuing to ramble.

Either way, I sort of wonder which wallpaper would have more content. 'Cause, personally, I'm a horrible taskmaster and want to make Amber to extra work. :mwaha
Okay, not really.
I'd probably vote for the one with less characters so that the extra niceness and other good stuff could make up for the lack of numbers.
But that's just me. :3

Really, I'm just here to donate, the wallpaper is a nice bonus but i'm mainly participating to give money to this comic that has given me a sort of joy. I'll proboblly continue participating in wallpaper wars as they appear and most likly i'll send in random donations now and then as well. Wichever side wins I think I'll be happy with but it's somewhat fun to have a mini-competition..well I think i've talked enough for now.

Ever so very minor nitpick:

Shouldn't there be a comma in there?

"HE WANTS TO KNOW IF YOU ARE GAY, ABEL!!"
(Ignoring the double exclamation marks...)

As it is, it looks like what's being asked is if there are multiple Abels running around and would this be the one that's gay? As opposed to the straight one, the bi one, and the asexual one?

...On second thought, I have no objections. Four Abels running around is a good thing.

on another note it would seem the girl team is staying a steady 60-70 dollars ahead. the outcome of this seems to be in favor of the girl groupshot.

My idea somewhat went like this if he was talking to his sisters.

Generally they'd surprise him once again yb randomlyshowing up at his house.

Jyrras: I see your all back, what's the new this time?
One of his sisters:Oh nothing really, just thought we'd stop by, who's your friend here?
Jyrras: This is my boyfriend.
*The sisters all stare at Jyrras and look at Abel*
One of his sisters: looks like your not taking dad's route anymore..

I just realized that Jyrras's family doesn't know he's gay yet..heh there be many awkward conversations to come in the future.

Jyrras's dad might be a little upset since he's the only boy in the family.  that would leave no one to carry on the family name

Not nessicarily, they do have another baby on the way, that one could be a boy and thus jy's father could relax if that would be what bothers him.

Yeah I know

But sometimes fathers fixate on the first son.  and it's still not known if the baby is a boy or a girl

I was just commenting based on my own experiance.

though my family is probably rather odd

I mean technicly I never came out to my dad.  He sat me down and said.  "Look damn it I know your gay"

I always thought that little "closet escapade" between Jyrras and Abel would have been done completely through the comics.   Although in the position the 2 are now simply in the donations counter (with Mab ruining the whole atmosphere XD), I do wonder what will be Abel's responce.

Probably going to look for something to change the subject :P

Sid would be correct. There is a very big difference between aesthetically changing your looks and actually changing ones true gender.  Its easy as pie to make oneself look like a girl if the cubi is in fact a boy, right down to the naughty bits. However, actually becomming a girl with functioning reproductive bits requires something powerful and permanent which is about the equivalent of a sex-change surgery in Furrae...so it isn't something done lightly since it is not something that can be reversed.

That said, I will reveal a slight hint that the actions of what has been going on in the wallpaper war are a result of which side gets the most donations between the updates.  And while I know the two possible WW image end results (one of them being Abel actually answering the question), what happens next will depend on if the guy or girl counter gets a boost.

I feel kind of bad, cause had the guy team actually been ahead, it was planned for Regina to show up and offer the wallpaper themes to go fanservice as a means to try to take a sneaky advantage.  However, not only has the war been close, but the girls have been in a natural lead the entire time so there was no point.  Which is probably going to be a disappointment when the wallpapers are made and neither of them are very fanservicey but just your basic groupshot.

But I guess that is how these things go.

hmm, It's still too early for me to decide to donate again, it would only give temporary lead if I did as the girl side seems to be keeping steady in the lead and I'm limited to amounts i can donate at a time..

I'm partial to the guys side winning now more than the girls, but to put them ahead I probably couldn't do alone..well, I could but it'd put quite the dent in my funding.

As for fanservice, the idea is interesting but it depends on what kind of fanservice is idealized. though it probably won't deter me from donating to the guys side again.

If the guys side gets closer I'll donate again or if the wallpaper event invokes me to do so, but for now I'm at a halt for action.

My donation were pretty much towards the development of Jyrras and Abel's relationship, though it was partially influenced by the "battle of the sexes" theme as well.

And I stopped myself with the "I think too much about babies" post, where I changed the subject.

Changing the subject again, do we have any idea who would be in the wallpapers? Amber said something about groupshots depending on how much the guys and girls count changes, so does that mean one of the outcomes could be less characters, but in action somewhere? Would the groupshot be them dispersed or all in a line?

Agreed entirely.

I've never understood how the whole "m-preg" thing would work. There is just no way a guy can have "a bun in the oven" when we don't have "ovens" in the first place.

Technically, you don't -need- an oven to get started. There are possibilities available; the egg is perfectly capable of attaching itself inside the fallopian tubes, or elsewhere in the body, if it gets loose.

It's quite dangerous, even critically so, for the parent host, but it _works_ - at least for the start.

... I wouldn't volunteer for it myself, but medically speaking, it can happen. You'd need a heck of a lot of medical attention to get it to happen to a guy, though. And I feel really sorry for the poor git - there ain't no way to get it out once it's grown, if you both live that long. :-/

One thing I'm curious about. With the wallpaper wars if the total donations reach a certain amount both wallpapers are drawn but the winner is given special treatment.

Is there another donation point in which both sides are given equal specialness?

I blank them not because I dont want a tie, but because more often than not, the time between the second to last and the winning counter has a surge of donations that I can't properly keep up with them and work on a proper finale image at the same time.

People will often see one side losing, try to bolster that side up, only for that side to end up taking a massive sweep because the other side thought this entire time their side was still in the lead.

However, I will say that if the two numbers are within a particular small distance between eachother, I will more than likely fill in the gap myself and create a tie.  If I feel like it. :B

Ok. Seriously. Am I the only female and/or person who finds the concept of an offspring of two guys incredibly stupid?  I dont even like the idea of females having babies, (ouch ouch ouch) much less the idea of a guy having to squeeze a watermelon out of a lemonseed sized hole...or having his abdomon sliced open.

Ugh.

*Charline hmms*  While I'm not too keen on the idea of males giving (given that my Mum was also a goddess of children and would see it as such a horrid abomination she'd likely go on a human-race-devouring binge again), I DO rather like the idea slicing their abdomens open.  Slowly.  With my claws.   >:3

Could you save the image before numbers then just update that same image with the new numbers? Maybe twice a day with just numbers?
Or would that still be too much time in between that thered still be that landslide?

Quote from: Amber Williams on May 18, 2008, 10:54:00 AM
Sid would be correct. There is a very big difference between aesthetically changing your looks and actually changing ones true gender.  Its easy as pie to make oneself look like a girl if the cubi is in fact a boy, right down to the naughty bits. However, actually becoming a girl with functioning reproductive bits requires something powerful and permanent which is about the equivalent of a sex-change surgery in Furrae...so it isn't something done lightly since it is not something that can be reversed.

But really, if it's a magical change like you say, couldn't it go the other way? I mean, it would be just as difficult, if not more so, but still theoretically possible.

Magic is not always a simple on/off switch. Much like science isn't always a simple on/off switch.  Just because you can get one result from magic or science, it doesn't always mean that it is just as easily reversible if you backtrack.  In the case of gender-changing, true gender changing, the magical equivalent of a surgeon needs to more or less do the equivalent of genetic recoding...a process that takes a good full-day and can be considered very risky since if they miss any, negative things happen. (it is generally standard procedure to keep the patient extra days for a few more go-overs just to be safe)

Magic has a tendency to be chaotic, and that much magic causes the code to be less stable. So a second procedure (in this case reversing) will often be disasterous because now one is mixing magic with magic and on unstable terrain. In theory it could be possible, but the chance of survival is low enough most dont want to mess with it.

Are you referring to the nurse who was in the ad for Mech Quest?  I don't recall any nurses in Dungeons and Denizens, although there was a two-headed fire-breathing dog who would probably be willing to give tender loving care to some of the characters.

Edit:
You were right.  I had forgotten that image.  And her as a nurse is an image I will try hard to forget again.

My current issues with donating are that:

A) One of my family had a birthday and I always buy him something shiny because he's my favorite family member.
B)I'm currently running low on money wich I need for the travelling I plan to do in the summer
C)Being paid every two weeks kinda leaves me high and dry as this is ending before my next payday.

Pretty much as it's turning out, only a miraculous twist of fate is going to allow even a tie for the groupshots.

There are limits on these things. You'd have to update the actual image, and place the text in the right place, and get the output accurate, and protect against people sending corrupted emails, or emails from Outlook, that would break things, and you'd have to leave the machine processing it online all the time, and make sure it didn't crash, and all the things would have to work perfectly, and...

Admittedly, these are all surmountable problems, but the effort required is not commensurate with the results. And it involves a lot of screwing around with Amber's working area, which is likely to impact on the comics...

Personally, I'd rather she did what worked for her, and concentrated on the comics, and not farting about making a few people happy for one day or so. Just my opinion, of course.

That gives me an idea:

Jyrras Gianna was a just typical overly-cute roorat with a taste for technology.  Until one day he fell for a cubi that just happened to be the diabolical Dr. Ink!  Now, Jyrras is trying to balance a doctorate and avoiding dissection by the deadly Dr.!  It's loads of wacky, twisted fun for the whole family!

It's "The Dr. is Ink!" starring Rod Schneider, rated PG-13.

*Cartman*  Dammit Kenny!  It's not funny!

It seems acceptable for a PG rating, it's not like he'd be taking any action towards it, besides most people who read this comic seem to be well within their teenage years. In a way, that would be the fanservice you partially thought of putting in before and it would only be text instead of something you'd have to draw into the groupshots or something right?

I'm proboblly wrong and stepping out of line again arn't I?

There are limits on these things. You'd have to update the actual image, and place the text in the right place, and get the output accurate, and protect against people sending corrupted emails, or emails from Outlook, that would break things, and you'd have to leave the machine processing it online all the time, and make sure it didn't crash, and all the things would have to work perfectly, and...

Admittedly, these are all surmountable problems, but the effort required is not commensurate with the results. And it involves a lot of screwing around with Amber's working area, which is likely to impact on the comics...
Well, at least with the ones from the current wallpaper war, it would be very simple to just have the text at a fixed position off the left bottom corner(as apposed to the left top, very simple math).
Secondly, why all the hassles with mails? I would just have the script run as a cron job and, every hour or so, login to her paypal account and get the current amount data that way, and thanks to cURL, its quite simple actually. I would have it generate the image then, and then just link to the generated image.
Its tempting to do myself, even just to get myself a working 'get_data_from_paypal("user","pass","cookiefile")' function.

As a note, the only thing Amber would have to do to update it would be to just upload the new file to a specified location(If she numbered the updates in sequential order, it would be extremely simple to get the script to chose the latest file)

XD  You do know that I, nor anyone else would need access to that password; If I actually did this, I would basically have a form for you to fill it out with, so such information would be kept secret. I would/will build & test it using my own info, and then it would work for anyone(with their info).

I can't see how having something log into your email(as Llearch suggested) would be any more secure...

Which is probably the reason I would also decline on Llearch's proposal as well.

Besides, the main issue with the wallpaper war is updating the graphics (in this case Abel, Jyrras, and Mab) and I doubt there is any automation out there that will do the drawing for me.  The actual switching of the numbers takes barely any time, its the image themselves that is what slows me down.

llearch wasn't proposing. llearch was providing the reasons why Amber wouldn't want to participate in  such a scheme, however good it looks on the surface. *grin*

As I said - not insurmountable problems, but likely to disturb Amber's ability to make comics.

And as appears to have been missed by Robbie, Amber's ability to make comics is the primary aim. Anything - and I do mean anything - we might suggest that gets in the way of making comics is not something we really want to get into.

And remember, we're talking her ability to create here - which means things like going out for a walk are still helping her make comics. Keeping happy. Being relaxed. Having clever ideas. Screwing with our minds.

Heck, I shouldn't have to say any of this.

Robbie, this means if you have any more bright ideas, please think about them... but don't disturb Amber with them, ok? ;-]

I don't see why posting said ideas in response to somewhat of a question is wrong.
Yes, we all want Amber to stay happy. Saying an *idea* on the forum(In response to another idea/question) is not the same as building something and emailing Amber, bugging her to use it. Amber didn't even have to reply here, and I was actually surprised when she did.

I have to point out, in response to your figuring that I did not take Amber having to work harder into account, that the script I envisioned would require absolutely zero work from Amber to update.

Off topic but, I actually managed to build a script which gets data from paypal. I now need to figure a way to use it on my own website(Also - anyone who is wondering: PM me and I will give you a copy).

Naldru, that is a good point. I however think that email information is far more dangerous in the wrong hands than Paypal data; with email account info, a malicious individual can take over anything which has that email for password recovery. Paypal *may* have a couple extra checks and balances to prevent this from happening, but I wouldn't put it past a malicious individual.

I hope what I have said here is taken in the way I meant it.

*some Spiel*

she doesn't want it man, let it go.. plus i wouldn't want something that'd potentially open up my paypal account (credit cards and bank account by proxy) to the numerous script kiddies that exist on the internet, truth be told, something like that may even be illegal, and against the TOS of paypal to even use. Not to mention the aforementioned bigass security risk, really, think things through, sure the idea sounds good on paper (or in your mind), but in the long run, it'll prolly fail worse than windows ME.

and like so many of her readers, and a webcomic artist myself, i can understand the value of time and care being given to anything for a comic, i don't think you appreciate that robbie, if you ask me. To be honest, i appreciate the care Amber gives to the wallpaper wall images, it seems far less 'mass produced' that way.

But if there is no demand, then no problem of course. It was just an idea.

I could comment on Abel's expression, but what's more amusing to me is how the lead shifted towards the male side as soon as it started to look like Abel might be in it.

Given how girl/gay friendly DMFA is, there's no chance that Abel's side will not come out on top in a wallpaper war.

I'm surprised Jyrras is able to respond so early after his brain breaking, maybe the nut crunch brought him back to.
And wow, this'll easily get over 3000 by the way its going, Is that in US or Canadian?, And is it close enough to be a tie?

I'm kind of suprised too. The girls definately have a lot more peeps rooting for them...but the guys have had several heavy-hitting donators who have pulled them up by the bootstraps.

Right now donations seemed to have ceased...so unless there is something in the next 24 hours, its very much anyones game.

As an aside, and I will probably mention this next time I do a war. In the event people want a tie, all they have to really do is donate with the words "Tie" instead of a side...and I use the money to bring up the losing side to even it out.

well theres RJ or Ink, im not sure which would be preferable. then again my wife used to be a nurse, should she ever bother to show up every so often- and a viking nurse isn't all that pleasant either, seeing as how viking philosophy says dying with pokey bits of metal in you is a good thing.

our other option is a rescue attempt by lowering a rope down from the wallpaper war to the navigational buttons, i would suggest they bring an ice pack and a splint.

Dont worry Zack.  What the winning side has forgotten is that I am Satan. Victorian dresses, as those dresses that make the lady look like a huge, lacy bell?

I vote for the bonus comic.
As long as you force Jy into a blue dress.

I think we've already been there - that is, Jyrras being in a blue dress. I'm probably the only one on the forums who remembers the "DMFA in Oz" wallpaper war story. XD

If I could find some of the images deep within the recesses of my extremely old hunk-of-junk computer, I'd post it.

Who says I forgot Oz? I just thought it'd be funny to see again. ;P

The only bad thing about vacations is only being able to get internet roughly once a week. Did something happen image wise in the wallpaper wars between Abel's whimper and today's collapse? Would someone be kind enough to share?

Also - DMFA in Oz. I have heard it mentioned before. I keep finding teasing little mentions of it. Would someone please take pity on me and share? Pretty please with sugar on top?

Abel fell. That's about it. Mab and Jy-baby looked down on him.

I wouldn't worry too much. It'll show up in the archives sometime. If I have to do it for Amber, it will, anyway. ;-]

*cough*

Aaaaand, Abel is still curled up in a painful ball at the bottom of your reading screen. :)

I find it amusing how despite the wallpaper war being over, this thread continues to receive posts.

Just goes to show how epic this war was, it must be remembered.

It's Abel. Anytime we have an opportunity to discuss him, the thread goes on for a long time.  ;) That and Jyrras being utterly adorable.:lol
Thanks for the clue-in, llearch. I figured that was all I missed, but considering that it's Amber, I decided to ask anyway since it's hard to predict her sometime. Which is just how we like it, ne?
DMFA in Oz ended with ominous sneaking, huh? *insert wishing she'd found DMFA sooner here* :animesweat
