Title: Top 5 games of all time
Post by: Rakala on March 14, 2008, 10:29:57 AM
Here is a question for everybody reading this. In your opinion what are the 5 greatest games ever? All games count. Board, card, video, sports, any game. List from least to greatest.
Mine is....
#5. Liar's Dice
#4. Phantasy Star Universe
#3. Ticket to Ride
#2. Legend of Zelda
#1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Only 5?  The Ultima Series alone would fill that  :B

Leaving out vitally important things like Deus Ex and the System Shock games, Jet Set Willy, Achemist and numerous awesome games on the BBC Micro, the games which I've wasted most time on or found most inspiring have to be:

5. Morrowind (Win32)
4. Ultima 6 (DOS)
3. Doom (DOS)
2. Repton Infinity (BBC Micro)
1. Monty On The Run (Sinclair Spectrum/C64)

I've included Morrowind because it's awesome, and I've been playing it more-or-less solid for a year.
Ultima 6 was so fantastic that I wrote my own map editor and produced the only known add-ons for it.
Doom, 3-5 years, I think, and people who have seen 'The Sky May Be' will probably never forget it.  I still need to publish my Doom logic gates.
Repton Infinity was not so much a game as a game development suite, complete with its own script language and compiler.
And Monty On The Run was to my mind, one of the finest platform games I've ever played.  I had the Spectrum version, but I'll always love the soundtrack on the C64 port.

I'm tempted to do several of these, one per platform.  Even then I may have to frig it by counting DOS and Win32 as separate  >:3

I had an urge to list a couple of games that are not really popular (or known at all) outside of my country, but I decided not to do that.

5. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
4. Total Annihilation
3. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
2. Fallout 2
1. Star Control 2

I had no doubts about the top three places, but I had some other variants for the last two. Anyway, I decided to put the two of my favourite strategy games there.

Well, since i see PC games and console games as completely different, i have two lists.

For the first one, i choose the ones that i find stupidly fun, engaging and memorable. Only one from each series, though.

1. Deus Ex.  My sister bought this for my brother and i didn't play it for at least a year. Oh how dumb i was. The most detailed, engrossing and fun game on PC by far.
2. System Shock.  I got to this website just because of Tapewolf's anti walk through for it. A brilliant game unlike ever i have ever seen.
3. Serious Sam.  About 3 years after blind shooter macho athons like Duke Nukem and Doom died as a subgenre, Serious Sam comes up out of nowhere and delivers pulse pounding action and graphics by the bucketload. Also, what other FPS has a CANNON as a weapon?
4. Morrowind.  This is another game Tape introduced me to. I had never played an FPS RPG, and i mean PROPER RPG, before it. Oh man, i love it. It's got so much to do, and i still haven't beat it!
5.  Arx Fatalix.  One more of Tape's games, and man, oh man, i love it! No matter what i seem to do, the game doesn't care and just rolls with it!

Now the console games. Some of these may be on PC, but i played them on a console, so shut up.

1. Super Metroid (SNES).  Most folk know I'm a Metroid nut, and if you played this, you would understand! Graphics, Story, Action and replayability, it has it all!
2. Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2 (PS2).  The hack 'n' slash spinoff of Baldur's Gate, which i haven't played, i got this one summer and never stopped playing it until the summer had gone. I just love hack 'n' slashes.
3. Guitar Hero II (XBOX360).  My brother brought this home once, and holy shit, it has brought me so close to music! It showed me Black Sabbath, Wolfmother, Alice Cooper and, best and most favorite of all, Rush. I could probably play YYZ with my hands in my teeth.
4. Young Merlin (SNES).  A relatively obscure SNES title, it was a clone of Zelda, but was so memorable. Who doesn't know that you need to use the Timer, get behind the dragon and THEN shock her?
5. ShadowMan (N64).  A horror game that gave me not nightmares, but sleepless nights because i was playing it so much! It was one of the most vast adventures on the Nintendo 64, and even my MUM played this!

Another Personal Reference list.

5. The Pokémon series

4. Tetris Attack (SNES)

3. TMNT 4: Turtles in Time

2. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

1. Tied between Sonic 3 and Knuckles and the Super Smash Bros. Trilogy

5: I Wanna Be The Guy! (freeware game)
4: Cave Story/Doukutsu Monogatari (freeware game)
3: Metal Gear Solid 3
2: Ratchet and Clank series/Jack and Daxter series (I couldn't make up my mind)
1: Sly Cooper series

Yet another personal list.
Title: Re: Top 5 games of all time
Post by: Reese Tora on March 15, 2008, 03:46:42 AM
1: Portal
2: Stronghold
3: Super Mario Bros.
4: Sonic the Hedgehog
5: Final Fantasy 7

1: Best game ever.  Period
2: Not the first strategy game, nor necessarily the most loved, most balanced, or most well made, but it is the best mairrage of the two parts of tactical strategy gaming, strategy combat and city building.
3: One of the original greats, this established the platforming genre firmly, in my mind
4: Odd, finding this on the list, sharing space with Mario, but Sonic pushed at the boundaries and re-shaped what is the 2D platforming genre.
5: This gets the spot for one reason: it's probably the single game that most brought the RPG genre to the majority of game players.  It's not what I would consider the best of the series(FF6 holds that spot with me), but it had a large effect on the landscape of RPG gaming.

There are other games I've liked more than some of the games I've listed, and others that are flat out better, but I think that these are the most important.

in no particular order

Odin Sphere
Okami
Homeworld
Super Metroid(BEST! PLATFORM! GAME! EVER!)
Myst

FF7 was good, but doesn't deserve a Top 5 slot.  For one thing, it's aged really poorly.  You'll notice that two of the games on my list have aged really well(Myst and Homeworld), and two more will go down in history as having done so(Okami and Odin Sphere).

Okami was indeed awesome. But it still didn't make my top 5 list. One of the things I look for in a game is replay value and although Okami was fun, it didn't have a great amount of replay value. Sure it was fun playing through a second time but then it got kinda old. Although now I'm pining for it now that I no longer own it. Rumors are they're remaking it for the Wii.

They are, indeedy.  Gamespy staff said they had trouble with the Wiimote being just a little too sensitive on brush strokes, like a Power Slash was always read as being too wavy a line to work.  I'm sure they'll impliment some sort of smoothing on that.

I think it goes without saying that, although there is a difference between a good game and a bad game such as gameplay etc., it all comes down to personal preference in the end. Different people like different genres more than others. I, for example, like fighting games and games like Tomb Raider the most (exploration, puzzle solving, all being done in lost cities etc). Someone else, however, would prefer platformers or racing games.

I know it's pretty obvious, but I thought I'd just put it out there...yeah... *walks off*

You just like Tomb Raider for the boobs. (Isn't there a shirtless Lara cheat? I could've sworn I read something about it in a GamePro magazine years ago. :P)

5. Roller Coaster Tycoon / Zoo Tycoon (It's hard choosing between killing people on rides and letting dangerous animals attack the guests.)
4. Conker's Bad Fur Day
3. Animal Crossing
2. Banjo Tooie
1. Banjo Kazooie

My list'll most likely change when BK3 comes out and I get an Xbox 360, or whatever console it comes out on. Because Rare is awsuuuuuuuuuum

No, I do not like Tomb Raider for the boobs. I don't know whether there is a shirtless lara cheat, and quite frankly I do not care.

It wasn't a cheat, it was basically a recolour mod. Such a thing is nothing spectacular by today's standards but it was somewhat unique back in those days and caused quite a stir.

Don't let the ESRB hear that, or all games with 3D models will get thier rating boosted like GTA and Oblivion :rolleyes

Side note, someone here caused me to reinstall Diablo II, and I blame you for loss of productivity.
(actually, I've gotten mroe work done at home today than in the past month... but that was before I reinstalled it.)

The games I listed aren't all my favorite ones, just the ones I've played that I feel have been really influential on the genres involved.

Hmm... top five games of all time...
#5  World of Warcraft- yeah... the most addicting game i've ever played
#4  Morrowind- spent soo much time in that game, jeez
#3  Final Fantasy 9-  no I didn't play seven, no I won't play seven.
#2  Legend of Zelda: OoC- beat this one completely over a dozen times at least
#1  Jet Force Gemini- awesome third person shooter for the N64, two twins and their dog taking on an entire bug
army. I've never had so much fun playing a video game as this one.

I have a horribly juvenile collection of games in comparison to all of the first-person shooter games/Final Fantasy spin-off games my IRL-best-friend keeps getting and consequentially shoving in my face. I will play my Phoenix Wright and enjoy it, thank you.

5: Final Fantasy X
4: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3: Assassin's Creed
2: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney/Justice for All/Trials & Tribulations
1: Monster Rancher 2

This, however, is an extremely uncertain list, since there are many games I really enjoyed. Plus I wasn't sure how to arrange the list. Oh yeah. Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie were FANTASTIC games.
