So, yeah, I've been doing a lot of DMFA theme scribbles these days, and I just got Photoshop CS2.
As such, this stuff sucks. Suggestions appreciated.
(Edit: on second glance, it looks better than I thought it did. Certainly better than other stuff I've seen online. Suggestions still appreciated.)
First up, a Warp-Aci. Named Sif.
Sif (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/sif.png)
Sif is styled after a fox. The color on the tip of his tail is actually a square patch twisted to look like the tip of a foxes tail. The glow around the ruff looks funny, IMHO, and one of the things I need to work on..
Next up, and much worse, is my avatar as a Incubus.
Cubi Smash! (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/CubiWFsmall.png)
The claws are actually his fingers, looped around twice to increase the size of his fist.
I don't really like the right knee.
The headwingies are kind of rough.
I like how the near hand/arm came out. the shoulder/arm is supposed to look really sinewy. I like how the tentacle fingers came out.
I tried to make the ruff, knee frizz, and tail look somewhere between tentacley and fluffy.
The jaw is supposed to look un-naturaly open too.
Very rough shading. This is new territory for me.
I ran out of room on the page for his wings, they're supposed to be pterodactyl-ish.
That's his clan mark on his cheek.
...I'd almost call this one a WIP. Here's the pencils.
http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/CubiWFpencil.jpg (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/CubiWFpencil.jpg)
Any way... just thought I'd share. More to come on a regular basis, I hope.
(EDIT: I'm sorry if i seem to be flooding the board with crap, but I'm kind of journaling a bit here too. The only way I can really keep momentum is to try and produce daily, and posting here really, really helps. I wont go into personal problems, but this is important to me, so I appreciate having you guys here. As my work gets better, I'll be making much smaller and less frequent posts of higher quality.
Edit2: images turned into links.
Edit3: Closed my bloody tags.)
It looks like the highlights around Sif's legs, paws, & face are a bit too harsh. (At least, that's what it looks like to me.) I might try, maybe, making them more opaque or trying to soften/blur the edges, or both.
Other than that, they look nice. The shadows on your incubus are actually kinda nice. Ya' know, not too in-your-face with it, but enough to highlight the details.
If these are your first attempts at PS, then very well done. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/xHaZxMaTx/Smilies/eusa_clap-1.gif)
The only thing I could tell you that could really use some improvement is the highlighting on Sif, as Modelin already mentioned; looks too shiny.
Strictly speaking, this isn't my *First* work with photoshop. My mom has a home business doing web- and Printwork, and I get paid sometimes to help out. But that's mostly design and layout stuff. Inking and coloring art is a whole different animal that I am just getting acquainted with.
As for the shadows, I put those on their own layer and set the opacity to whatever I like.
I like Sif's look, he looks kind of shiny. (Warp Aci are supposably customizable in appearance... I think I'll use that as my excuse). I do agree that it could be done better, though. Maybe some phongs.
I'm probably going to do a lot of different versions of my avatar, as the various races of Furrae.
More work. These things always look better when I look at them an hour later.
Do you play chess? (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/dragonwf.jpg)
Dar-gon. Yay.
I'm playing more attention to shadows here.
I still don't like how irregular the lines are.
Mythos are cool. I'm not sure whether I like them or 'cubi more. Here's me as a kitusne.
WhiteKitusne (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/mythoswf.png)
From what I've seen, Mythos seem to be surreal creatures, almost dreamlike, and usualy without fur. This is a bit of a departure from DMFA canon, i guess, but if I'm going to be a mythic fox, it's gotta be kitusne.
That is a Keaton mask he's wearing. I love those things.
I started trying to do some decent fabric look to the near arm, but never really finished. I think I was tearing my hair out over the frizz at 6 AM.
Here's the pencils.
http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/mythosWF.jpg (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/mythosWF.jpg)
As usual, I like the pencils much better.
I'm starting to get annoyed at how flat everything is. I was really trying to push some depth on the dragon, and it still looks like it was done with poster paints. Then again, dragons don't have much for texture. Next time I draw, I'm going to pay a lot more attention to fabric and fur. I'm also really tired of how gray and dull all the colors are. Might be because I'm using CYMK instead of RGB, but I'm not sure if that'll really make a difference.
Man, how does Amber get all that depth and texture? Her shadows and highlights are so expressive.
(Edit: turned some more images into links.)
I like the second picture more than the first for some reason, though the lack of inking on the hands and tail make them look somewhat misplaced.. I like it :) like haz said; very well done.
Alyno: That's kind of what I was going for. Kinda makes him look like he's not wearing cloths... the clothes have something inside them...
More work. Another Cubi version of WF.
Gotta be suggestive and wear belts. Essential cubi traits.
This one drove me insane, probably because it was so much more time intensive than the others. I suppose the more I practice the more endurance I'll get. I could have done more shading, but I just ran out of patience. I like how the legs came out though. I also like the frizz at the shoulders, and the transition from white to gray.
Next time I do this, I ought to use a different shade of blue for the BG. That one's too intense.
His coloration is based on an Arctic fox's summer fur pattern, btw.
How the heck does Amber get all those highlights in the hair? Cripes!
And the lines are still wiggly, durn it! mostly just the wings, though. Which I had to redraw three times.
I might touch this one up further, if I'm not still sick of him tomorrow.
Anyway... I'd really appreciate some constructive criticism.
Nice. I'm not entirely sure about the shape of the wings. They seem to come out from the shoulders, curl up and then down, which strikes me as being rather frail.
If we look at Pyroduck:
http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_556.php
...the wing branches out in both directions. Abel has half feathered and half bat-wings, but the basic shape Amber uses seems to be common to both. Here's a picture of Abel from behind:
http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_572.php
The other thing I'm not sure about is the tentacle-heads, if that's what they are. They look thin and stringy, and they seem to be branching out from the hair rather than the backwings.
Here's a reference for Dan's tentacles:
http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_378.php
The neck looks about right for a feral canine, but Amber's furres generally have a thinner neck like a human.
Obviously, if you're trying to do your own interpretation rather than copy Amber's design whole, take my comments with a grain of salt...

The wings do actually come from the shoulder blades, down and then back up, you just can't see it. From the pterodactyl reference pictures I saw, a given wing has 4 segments to the limb rather than three. Pyroduck's wings go down, up, and down again. These ones go down, up, up again, and down. They do look kinda funny, though.
(EDIT: double checked my refrence. I had it wrong.)
The neck is supposed to be fluffy, that's how I draw foxes.
I'm kinda mixing styles here... Mostly I'm studying Amber's shading and coloring. I haven't changed my drawing style much, but that's been influenced by Amber for the last five years, at least.
New inccubus pic. I might do another pic from behind, just to study the wings. I'm still not happy with it, but overall it's much better quality than what I've done so far.
The wings are better, but still look a bit off.
I really simplified the coloring here, especially around the face. it was getting way to complicated. I also took the outline off the left membrane, I still can't tell which side I like more.
I also did much better on the shading on the wing lim, this time around.
The lines are much less wiggley too. Not perfect, but much better.
Anyway, comments would be much appreciated. I'm still learning here.
EDIT: I might do some wing studies for a bit. Might be a day or two before I post more PSP stuff.
Yeah, that looks a lot better for the wings. You might want to make the fluff of fur at the shoulders a little more subdued, e.g. http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_863.php ... as it looks kind of like spikes, and I'm kind of expecting to see more evidence of fuzz on his arms as a result.
I do like the way you've used the highlighting on the arms to show the muscle structure. That works well.
The muzzle, however, looks a little short, especially when compared to the previous picture.
I was trying to simplify the face, which is why the muzzle looks so short. I'll probably go with a length somewhere in between.
As for the fuzz, I like putting a lot of fuzz on my avatar. Arctic foxes are *really* fluffy.
Anyway, back to drawing. Thanks for the suggestions.
Tapewolf had some comments about the wings I had on my incubus, so that got me started on a quest for improvement. Results now stand before you!
Pardon me while I blog a bit...
First off, I figured I'd take at look at how Amber draws wings and imitate the style. Pretty much copying.
Page 1 (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/danstudies.png)
I even noted the comic I was using for reference. I thought I did pretty good.
Now, for me to draw something without reference, I have to *understand* it. As soon as I can understand it, I can draw it from any position, any angle. But to do that, I usually have to do some life drawings. I looked up some pictures of birds on Wikipedia. Since I liked em, I figured I'd post some of the better sketches for the heck of it.
Osprey (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/life/osprey.png)
Kite (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/life/kite.png)
Hawk (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/life/hawk.png)
Voilá. I drew this guy with no references.
Chaucer (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/chaucer.png)
Next up, I was going to do some draconic/bat wings.
This didn't go so well as the bird wings.
Let's take a look at Pyroduck (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_235.php). The bottom of his wings have two points. One at the end, that meets up with his wingtip. The other, however, looks like it meets up with a different strut.
Now, an elbow spike is used quiet often in fantasy art. Pyroduck certainly seems to have one. There's one problem though.
NO FLYING CREATURE ON EARTH HAS AN ELBOW SPIKE. As far as I could tell.
Which means I can't find a reference image for it. Well, alright, I'll just look at some bats. Back to Pyroduck up there... his membranes arc at the bottom. Bat wings don't do this. Outstretched or closed, I couldn't find any reference images of a batwing that arc'd sharply at the bottom. I think I found about three more biological impossibleties with how I wanted to draw the wings before I gave up.
I did get this out of it, though. I think it's quite good.
Terra Chiro (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/chiro.png)
Mmm. Nice... wings. I was looking at her wings. Really.
(Edit: I just noticed her wing goes straight up from her back, and lacks an elbow. I made a mistake while inking, D'oh.)
Anyway... those're my adventures so far. It's 6AM now, so I'm getting some sleep and trying some outstretched batwing designs tomorrow. I'm also proud to declare that I've gotten comfortable inking and coloring at my current skill level.
Comments, of course, appreciated.
[EDIT2] Turned some images into links.
Grr. Tired of wracking my brain about technical stuff. I gotta draw a comic. Maybe a fanfic, or DFMA setting with original characters.
Anyone got any suggestions? If I'm gonna post work here, it might as well be something people would want to see.
Edit:
I came up with some original characters and a story set in DMFA. I also resolved most of my issues with wing anatomy.
Any comments about art in the above post would still be appreciated.
That's a good one of the osprey, and it shows in the bird-guy.
As for Pyroduck, and especially when compared to your 'true bat-wings' figure, it certainly seems that 'bat-wings' is a misnomer. 'Dragon wings' is perhaps more apt?
Well, yeah, Dragon wings. But real life anatomical reference for dragons wings isn't easy to come by. Bats is the closest I could get.
I'll come clean, I'm better at life drawing than I am at cartooning. If I don't have a real life reference, I don't do to good at cartooning it. I should manage, though.

Well it is not 'real life' but you could pick up any of those newer movies with dragons in it. Some of the cgi guys really do alot of research into how winged creatures really work, and consider musculature, skeleton, and how it would all fit together. As close as you'll get to real life.
Actually strike that last part, there were a few winged dinosaurs, that might be a bit closer to real life.
For when you arer back to the technical brain wraking :)
As for the art, artic fox cool .. those are indeed fluffy little dudes. That's got to be hard to ballance fluff, vs. something left to draw other than a ball of fluff.
I can't pick out anything in particular with your art, but overall it does look like you've put alot of thought int othe design/posing/details of your characters here. A good thing
Actually, the thing about "No natural creature having the elbow spikes" I got that from the Lord of the Rings commentaries. As for the winged dinosaurs, I took a look at a pterodactyl for the second WF pic, which helped me sort out the bones. Unfortunatly, we don't really know how the skin behaved depending on the pose of the wing.
I just wanna say thanks, 'cause I've spent a long time building up my drawing skills time and haven't really had anyone to show this stuff to. Learning photoshop makes me feel like I'm back in kindergarden playing with crayons, so I feel kinda bad putting this crap up.
There's also a *lot* of crap it since I produce in fits and spurts.
(And yeah, I know it's crap. I'm getting better tho, so I'm happy.)
Anyway... I havn't slept in about 20 hours, so I'm gonna go glomp a pillow.
Well, I'm gonna post this mostly because I spent three days working on it. I hate everything about it, though. It was good practice, though.
Intro Comic (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/01.png)
The proportions of the panels are all off because I forgot the sketchbook I use for comics doesn't fit on my scanner.
About the only thing I'm keeping from this comic is the script and Ré. Jade and Theonor are getting makeovers, since I jumped feet first into making the comic and didn't take enough time to develop the characters.
Comments appreciated.
Not bad. Off to a better start than DMFA itself had.
I'm assuming the yellow cheetah-like person is the same figure but to be honest it's a little hard to be certain (the clothes change colour, and one seems to have horns). There are noticeable differences between the other guy in the bottom two panels, in the left one he looks kind of squirrel-like, but the profile view quickly dispels that impression.
More levels of shading in the backgrounds would be an improvement as well, or at least some kind of shading to the flat green grass.
Anyway, I'm keeping my eye on this. It looks like it has distinct potential.
Indeed it looks inpressive but I far warn myself for alot things
I'm having a hard time telling what's up with the text in the rectangles. At some points, it seems like thoughts (for which rectangles are what I'd normally think of), but in the 4th panel, it seems more like it's spoken rather than thought.
Quote from: modelincard on January 19, 2008, 04:22:30 PM
but in the 4th panel, it seems more like it's spoken rather than thought.
It's all narration, I believe.
Yeah, that's kinda what I meant. Just that in he last panel, it might be more apt to use thought bubbles or speech bubbles for an active thought, as opposed to narration, which I normally think of as a thought that's removed from the actual action of the comic.
The rectangles are all Jades thoughts. The events in panel 4 are supposed to be so quick, she doesn't have time to voice them out loud.
I don't ever like to use a narrator. I'd rather show the reader what's going on instead of telling them. in this case, Jade is sort of acting like a narrator.
Hmm. Thought bubbles are, by convention, bubbular, rather than square.
Not a criticism, merely a mention.
I know I've seen rectangles used as thought baloons at times... Maybe it'd be more appropriate if they were narrating a flashback, which was the tone I wanted to set here.
Still, I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.
(Edit) Gee, I knew I saw squared thought baloons somewhere (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Ab_002.php) before... :B

I'd call that narration, rather than thoughts. IMHO the difference between those and what you've done is that they are written as though they are reviewing the past, like a diary entry, whereas yours are suddenly interrupted by an event in the present.
Yeah. I did say about as much.
I think I was going for a soliloquy here... but kinda didn't. That's what Fa'Lina is basically giving us.
Plus, the "Wait, what?" comment at the end was supposed to be a humorous break in the mood. Which would have worked better if I'd gotten the rest of the script done well.
The strip was very very rushed, mostly because when I was working on it a lot of ideas were coming out of me all at once. Next one'll be better, I promise.
Just. Shoot. Me.
It's been over a week, and I'm about ready to set fire to something. Here's the abridged version:
-4 days troubleshooting.
-1 day reinstalling OS.
-1 day installing Gimp (Which I couldn't find scanner drivers for.)
-1 day reinstalling PSP CS2
-1 day surfing and installing drivers for CS2.
And another day to get back into drawing. And then I had to relearn everything I forgot with photoshop again. Here's the results.
Comic #02 (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/02.png)
In the third panel, you're looking at wrought iron bars.
I don't like a lot of this. I'll live with it, though.
I'll probably have another comic up in a day or two, but right now I'm so PO'd at my computer, I might freak just posting this. I need sleep.
I'm going to change a lot of stuff about Jade, mostly colors, in the immediate future. The outfit is already different but you don't get much of a good look at it. I didn't really plan Jade or Theo before I started drawing all this. I think I jumped straight into drawing comics and didn't give as much thought to my characters appearance as I should have.
Comic 3 and 4 are going to be better. At least, if the pencils are any indication.
...Just. Shoot. Me.
[EDIT] As usual, I've decided it's not as bad as I thought it was. I cut back some of my whining.

IIRC GIMP under Windows just uses the normal TWAIN system. Unless of course, Windows has moved on and no longer uses that anymore... I wouldn't know, as it's been about 15 years since I've had to scan anything under Windows.
Under Linux it gets more... interesting :<
Now, as for the comic, not too shabby. It could be better, and since you seem to be making changes already, #3 should be interesting to see.
Jade is curious. Her face resembles a cheetah, but without the spots. Also, she seems to have slit eyes like a domestic cat, which AFAIK cheetahs don't. Is she some kind of hybrid feline like Merlitz? Also, she doesn't seem to have a tail. Is that intentional?
Jade is a demon, so I've taken a few liberties with her appearance.
I completely forgot her tail, though. Gah.
As for GIMP, I'm using a Mac. The photoshop driver I'm using is called "CanoScan Gear CS 7.0.1x"
Getting better. I need to work on my composition though.
03- Gut wrenching agony lands you in the dog house. (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/03.png)
A lot of colors on Jade are different now. No reason for this storywise, I just needed to redesign her.
Still no tail. I'm not drawing it till I pencil more comics. As for spots, I have plans for those in the future.
As usual, comments appreciated.
[Edit: Wrong URL.]
[Edit the second: If anyone can tell me what kind of top I've put on Jade, lemme know. I need to look up a visual reference for it.]
halter top, I think. Or at least a variant thereof.
The edges on the inking look a little bit rough, especially in the top-left pane, also the warp-aci in the lower-right pane seems to have some of its inking missing. Was that intentional?
Apart from that and a couple of typos, very nice. I particularly like the way the warp-aci is crawling out of the floor.
That's... wierd. I don't know what happened to the lines on Wynk's head. The Vwmm is choppy because I decided to line it at the last second, and rushed it.
Panel two's inking is kind of rough because I had to do rework the lines several times for the downshot.
'Nother page.
04- The mysterious arts of SAIA. (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/04.png)
The perspective in panel one is all screwed up cause I couldn't draw my lines straight. I think I'm gripping my pen too tightly, hard habit to break. I didn't want to spend too much time drawing Theo's room, cause this is probably the only time we're going to see it. I like Wynk's tail in panel 1, tho. Which I forgot to draw in panel 2. I like Jade in panel 3, except for the face, which I hate. I like how the wall sconce-skulls came out, they're cool. So, once again, I like it and hate it. Wharg.
I need to slow down on these, I can tell I'm rushing them. I think half of how well these will come out is dependent on how much time I can spend on them. After a while, I just get tired of looking at it. Also, I need to browse though Blambot for fonts.
Anyway... comments appreciated.
The link is still to comic 3.
Anyway, I rather liked the face - she looks all excited, which contrasts nicely when she's asking if he's study torture. If there's anything wrong with her, I think it's that her neck is a bit too long. Oh, and the ears seem a little off.
Not drawing the tail in panel 2 seems like "artistic licence" and deliberate, rather than accidental. I'd just go with it, myself. ;-]
However, you've also failed to draw a clan mark on his forehead. That, I think, is a slightly bigger flaw, since The Gospel According To Amber seems to suggest that Warp-Aci only show up in this dimension by being drawn here through a Cubi... and that such drawing process, in a way, creates the body they inhabit; hence the mark on their forehead...
Oh, yes. I fixed the link for you. Hope you don't mind.
thanks for fixing the link.
Clan mark... right. I always seem to forget something.
Quote from: Tapewolf on February 01, 2008, 05:03:36 AMAnyway, I rather liked the face - she looks all excited, which contrasts nicely when she's asking if he's study torture.
I was hoping that would come across.
Her neck is pretty long to begin with, and she's tilting her head back which makes the neck look longer. At least, she's supposed to be. That's why I don't like it.
[Edit: When trying to change the name of the thread, to update the update date, I inadvertently hit the "Quote" button instead of Edit and reposted my first post]
Does this series have a name?
Haven't come up with a name yet. Thinking up a name may take longer than making the first 50 comics.
Quickie one-shot comic. Started as a scribble in my book, and I couldn't resist uploading it.
In socialist Canadia, DDR playes YOU. (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/DDR.png)
I've been curious about DDR since it showed up in the comic. If it weren't for DMFA, I dont' think I would have been as interested in trying it as I have been. Well, I picked up DDR: Hottest Party for the Wii (Or, WiiDR as I call it.) and it has wholly taken over all my free time. If I get 3 A's in a row on freestyle, it MAKES me play Super Samurai. :cry

I HATE Theonor in panel two, and I must have redrawn him 3 times. Prof. Maltorius looks so good in the other panels that I couldn't stand to start over from scratch. Also, the shading is minimal because I just wanted it to be DONE. I think it came out wellthough.
I wish people would post here... I feel weird making three or four posts in a row.
[edit] URL, not IMG link. Gah.

Nice. I actually found panel 2 rather endearing, although yes, the head is a little off compared to the final panel.
One thing you might want to bear in mind is that most 'Cubi in DMFA only seem to have one name. It might be that they use their Clan as a surname, but other than that, they only seem to adopt one if they were born into Being society (e.g. Abel Rewanz, Daniel Ti'Fiona).
Granted we don't really have enough datapoints to be entirely sure, but as a rule of thumb, it seems to work.
Mostly... big names are more intimidating.
I love how the robe suit looks. I forgot to mention that.
More wacky chatroom hijinx.

Ugh. I've taken forever to make this one 'cause I'm going into an expiramental phase. If I don't post it, I'm just gonna keep tweaking and changing stuff. I've shot myself in the foot in a couple of places, like making the background, Theo's, and Unnamed Guy's fur all gray. Gah. I'm playing with hair coloring, and it looks much better at the high resolution version I was working on. I just want this one done with, though, so I'm posting it and moving on.
#7 in progress.
Not bad, although a little short. What kind of animal is the grey guy?
Feline. Nothing fancy.
DSOF#07-Re isn't too bright, really. (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/07.jpg)
(Side note: Felix's real name is Feliciano. Every one at SAIA calls him Felix, though. Fel hates both names with a passion.)
[EDIT] Ré's redesign is inspired by the Axolotl. Google it if you don't know what one is.
DSOF #7 took so long to finish cause I was more interiested in working on this:
feliciano.jpg (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/feliciano.jpg)
A pic of my most recently introduced character. Now, it took so long cause I was messing around with new methods of coloring. I know you guys aren't the most talkative here, but I could *really* use some feed back here. Anything would be nice.
Before, as in DSOF #07 above, I'd make a layer for ink, color, and shadows. I'd put the shadow layer to 30-40% transparent, and paint away. In the pic of Feliciano here, I've got one layer for ink and one for color. The balls to the left are swatches I used to pick and paint colors. I should probably go to using two shades of dark. I also started using paths for filling in some of the shadows and highlights, especially the hair. The boots highlight were done using my tablet. Probably the first time I've made use of the pressure sensitivity.
All in all, I really like the pic.
Nice. The hair shading works nicely. I'm not so sure about the facial shading on Theo in the mid frame, though. By the way, what kind of an animal is Theo anyway? He looks kind of like a hamster.
Should be interesting to see how it develops.
**EDIT**
That's "nicely" not "likely"
Theonor is a rat.His ears give me a lot of trouble, as they're round from the front but triangular from the side. I get that mixed up a lot
As for the facial shading, I'm not to hot on it myself. I need to do some life studies on that.
Yesss, life studies make everything better, they do.
Starting up on Dark Side of Furrae again. I built a quick-and-dirty site for navigating it.
Very quick. Posting the link here for your browsing pleasure and so I can show it to some friends IRL.
http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/dsof01.html
Were you planning on fixing the typos and spelling mistakes, or just not make them again?
I'm thinking to keep the mistakes as mistakes. I like to see progress in my work.
If I were to put up a complete website and try to build my own fanbase, as opposed to showing the comic here only, I would probably do revisions of the earlier comics. But that would be a complete reworking.
The biggest comment I get is that the writing is weak. I'll probably be focusing on that.
Interesting to see a strip halfway-through being coloured. There's something a little odd about the demon's mouth in the first frame, though... I can't quite put my finger on it. Something to do with the lips/cheek being too thin, I think.
It'll look better once I get the teeth and tongue in there.
Carp... I just realized I'm going to have to do a sheet like this: http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/dmfa/feliciano.jpg for everyone before I can finish coloring.
Edit: Very much the wrong link.
Aaaaaaand finally.
DSOF#8: Tactful minions are so hard to find these days. (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/dsof08b.html)
This took a month to finish because I kept finding things to fix. Eventually I realized that if I kept going down that road, I'd have to redraw the strip over again entirely. So I took a day to finalize it, and here it is, for your reading pleasure, freshly minted.
Let me know what you think.
I'm not sure there's much I can add that wasn't covered in the preview. It's nice to see it finished, and I'm curious as to how it will play out.
Just thought I'd throw this one up.
Bleuaaarg...
TZTA4T #1 (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/tzta4t/tzta4t01.html)
Strip #1 of a new, smaller scale project, "The Zone of Transposed Awareness that is 4AM on a Tuesday". I pronounce the abbreviation s-tay-at.
Dark Side of Furrae was more concieved to build and focus on my artistic skills, and it's a lot of work and effort in production. TZA4T is going to be more of an illustrated story, with more focus on the characters and writing. The setting and story/setting/characters have nothing to do with DMFA, so I'm kind of off topic here, but I thought i'd post it for comment. I'm not going to spend too much time talking about it.
The next/home images appear to be missing, as is the main.html page for the comic...
You may be aware of this already. ;-]
The buttons are missing because it's the only comic and I don't need em up yet.
Yeah, I'm sloppy.
TZTA4T might be a little while coming, I'm rethinking the next comic.
DSOF is taking forever to make. RL keeps throwing me crap.
Ah, ok. No worries, then.
Alright. I need a bit of a distraction from my comic projects.
I'd like to do a "cast picture" for *as many* people on the boards and IRC as I can do. Thereby, anyone wishing to appear please link to a decent description of your avatar, a refrence image, or fill out the simple Bio below:
Required:
Name: (Fairly straight forward.)
Gender: (Also fairly straight forward.)

Appearance: (eye/fur/skin/hair color/tone, ethnicity, facial hair, hairstyle, nose/jaw/eye shape, etc. at least a few details here, you don't have to be too specific.
Optional:

Body type: (general shape and look of your character. Heavy set, muscular, gaunt, buxom, etc.)
Clothes: (Specific garments, a style of dress, or lack thereof. Default will be t-shirt and slacks.)

Pose: (What you want your character to be doing. Default will be standing. If you want to be doing something to someone, say so and I'll try to accommodate.)
Props: (Anything you want with you, in your hand, on your back, etc.)
Area: (If you hang out specificly in the DMFA/CVRPG/RP, forums, or IIRC chat room, let me know and I'll group you with as many fellows as you wish. If you want to appear next to someone specific, also state here.)
Please submit through Personal Messages, or post here if you really really want to.
[EDIT] Some people have told me I'm crazy. I fully realize I'm looking at the possibility of STARTING with 30 characters here, and I'm not flinching.
TZTA4T #2 (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/tzta4t/tzta4t02.html)
DSOF #9 is taking longer than I thought it would. Here's Zone no.2
Also, added back and next buttons. The link from 1 to 2 is broken, but I'll fix that in the morning. It's 3AM, I'm hitting the sack.
(Also points to above post. Still hoping to get submissions.)

You are indeed crazy, but that's pretty normal around here.
I've never been in a cast picture before, so here goes:
Name: LionHeart (capitalised like that, please)
Gender: Male
Race: Anthro-feline
Appearance: A bespectacled male anthrofeline, with yellow fur, blue eyes (with vertically slit pupils), and dark-blond hair. Basically, that's him (me) in my avatar pic.

Body type: Lean,
slightly muscular, but not very. Sorta wiry-looking.
Clothing: A green long-sleeved open-neck shirt, and blue jeans. Semi-frameless glasses, as shown in my avatar pic.
I think I have one or two full-length pics somewhere - if you wish, I can dig them out and link to them. They are not very good, is all...

That would be awesome, even if it's not very good (I wont get into a "what is good/bad art" argument right now).
heh, just popping by to say kudos on the comic you put up- its got a nice feel, and ive actually studied dungeon management, fun course. inhuman resources isn't nearly as fun, but definaetly has opportunities for the creative.
.....i really don't have a description, nobody has ever really cared before
Name: Danny
Gender: Male
Race: Anthro Cocker Spaniel. This kind. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Cocker_Spaniel)
Appearance: Pretty much the same as that picture, but white all over with orange patches and long hair.
Size: Pretty much average, maybe slightly below most.
Body type: Generic, but with pretty weedy arms.
Clothes: Glasses, and a t-shirt with this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rush_2112.jpg) logo on it.
Personality: Kinda confused, only slightly
Pose: Standing indeeed.
Props: a piece of toast.... mmmmmmm.

Hm. My legion grows.
DSOF #9 The Librarian Cometh (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/dsof09.html)
I cannot begin to list the ways in which I do not like this comic. Mostly because I have way too many panels on the page. I got sick of this thing half way through inking, then once again half way through coloring. By now I just want it off my desktop and posted. It's pretty much a big slab of exposition anyway, so it's not worth agonizing over. As much as my work ethic is cringing to say this, I'd rather get on to more important parts of the story.
Next comic, I'm going to cut back on the number of panels. Hopefully I wont fatigue myself.
Well, if you're taking requests, the character I really, really would like to see drawn is Dorcan from Future History. Currently the only extant drawing of him is a background character in Turnsky's Foxfire series.
However, your aim seems to be a group shot, so I'll give you the data for Jakob.
Name: Jakob Pettersohn, alias Johan Cross
Gender: Male
Race: Anthro wolf. Incubus, with feathered wings.
Appearance:
Eyes: yellow/amber (wolf-coloured, basically)
Colouring: Medium-grey fur, dark-grey feathered wings and headwings.
Hair: Dark grey, usually shaded somewhere between his body and his wings. The hair is not short. Actually, what would be really cool would be to see him in full hippie mode.
Size: default
Body type: lean, not very muscular
Clothes: Red T-shirt, casual trousers. If you're going for the hippie, add the CND logo to the shirt.
Personality: Generally friendly
Pose: Peace gesture
Props: Traditionally he is pictured holding a spool of tape (a 10" Ampex-type reel) in or under one arm. Originally that was to separate him from any old wolf, back before his personality and backstory developed.
Area: DMFA, primarily. Jakob appears in the RPs ('Furrae Chronicles', 'Eternal Rains' and briefly in 'Brotherhood of the Machine').
References:
http://s89.photobucket.com/albums/k216/tapewolf/jakob/
http://www.jpmorris.force9.co.uk/stuff/jakob/tapewolf.jpg - this is one of my favourites.
I also highly rate Zina's version and Keaton's rendition, which can be found here:
http://www.jpmorris.force9.co.uk/stuff/jakob/
And of course there's my current avatar, from Turnsky.
**EDIT**
DSOF turned out nice. I like the faces in panes 2 and 3. Evil-Theo in particular.
And so the wings are finally explained, meaning I won't be tempted to post in this thread just to ask about them. Of course your cast page took care of that.
I would like to say that your art style has been improving, and for a "big slab of exposition" that you're not really satisfied with this is probally one of your best pages yet. The character bodies at the very least are starting to look pretty uniform panel to panel. Now you just need to work on keeping track of their acessory limbs.
As for your cast page... I think I'll skip. Nothing to do with your comment about legions growing... well mostly nothing to do about that. I just try to be a really passive person who trys not to beg for free art. For all the years I've had Ryan (I think it's close to five now) I've only got four piecies of art for him. Two unrequested, one as part of a halloween costume chibi page, and one uncompleted on my hard drive. Oh, wait, there was also that... you know it's probally best not to get into the details. So let's just say I'm not looking and it has nothing to do about you.
So, keep up the good work. Hope you're cast page turns out fairly decent.
I wasn't expecting DSOF to go over very well. No backgrounds, I got lazy in a few places (In the bottom left panel, Theo has no legs). I was pretty frustrated with it, but all I was seeing was the faults. Thank you for pointing out what I've obviously missed.
Ren: there are a couple things in the strip that I've been hinting at. Theo's wings were one of them, as I was pretty blatant about their changing colors. I'm glad people notice.
[Edit] For example, why does Jade have no spots if she's a cheeta?
As for appearing in the group picture... I think of this as a DMFA community thing. If you're here, you have a place in it. Half the reason I'm doing this is cause I like the idea of being able to see everyone together. I wont force you, though.
Reference Picture:

Required:
Name: ShadesFox
Gender: Male
Race: I am Foxeh. That is all you need to know.
Appearance: Grey fur, grey eyes, shades... yea you get the idea.
Optional:
Size: Da average
Clothes: Jeans and an open jacket.
Personality: "Will you be my friend? I promise that I don't bite... hard... unless that is your thing."
Props: Just the shades on the nose.
Area: I'm mostly in IRC these days. I terrorize my APF thread and some other parts of yonder forums, I may even try and return to the outer fortress.
hahah ok.
Required:
Name: Zina.
Gender: Female
Race: Anthro cat. :B

Optional:
Size: uuuuh 5'8" I guess. I don't know.
Body type: Zina's fat and sassy, hurr.
Clothes: T-shirt and slacks work. Zina tends to wear mostly dark colored clothing.
Personality: Zina's like me. A huge dick. But lovable. I suppose.
Pose: I don't know, have me giving bunny ears to someone.
Everything else is all gravy.
...while my handle and the handle of artist for Project Future both have the same initials, I assure you that I'm not Ren Gaulen. No insult taken, mind you. Certainly worst people to be confused with.
Regarding your "if you're here you have a place in it" response, I'm not really sure if I can be considered part of this forum. I was on the Nice, but mostly as a visitor from the Gaming Guardian forum. Even now that I rarely post on the Gaming Guardian forum, I still consider myself a Gaming Guardian formite above all other parts of my net identity.
But if you're honestly considering this, then I'll through my hat in the ring. Worst that can happen is... honestly not sure. As someone who was originally saying that he shouldn't even submit something, what would be worst: being picked, or not being picked? Anyway...
Ryan is my handle here, and honestly my main character. My muse if you will. He's not the me me, but he's the best I have for you since while furry I haven't settled on a fursona or anything.
Required:
Name: Ryan Galen
Gender: Male
Race: Anthro Housecat
Appearance: Emerald green eyes. Almost completely white fur with the exception of a black left ear. Short blond hair.
Optional:
Size: I've always said average, but average is based on perception and I'm a 6' tall guy. That's about where he is.
Body type: A fit kind of average. Or non-buff athletic. Basically no flab, somewhat toned, but no more muscle then you'd expect to find on your average person.
Clothes: Black pants, black shoes, and a white t-shirt with an open unbuttoned buttoned down shirt on top.
Personality: He's controlled person with a firm sense of common sense; at least in regards to his public action and reactions. Depending on what is going on around him, he'll either be business polite or WTF within this picture. These are forumite avatars we're talking about, so WTF moments might occur depending on who you place him next too.
Area: Forums, DMFA sections. I've mostly, for all twenty five of the posts on this account, been split between the DMFA forum and commenting on Tape's work here in the Tower of Art, though as you can tell from my post here I'm branching out to other artists. I have also been making a little bit of a push into the Haunted Ballroom, which makes sense since Ryan is a roleplaying character.

Hi, WhiteFox!
I think I'll give you some work too. :3 I don't have many good pictures of my avatar/character Ren, and they all can be found on the forum.
Here is Ren in his military outfit.
Here's a newer picture of Ren, complete with his replica.
And here's a picture of Ren in more casual clothes and not looking like he is going to cannibalise someone. :3
Hope these pictures will be helpful.
Now for the description.
Name: Ren Gaulen (aka the White Knight (of Kirindor) and the Sword of Gaia)
Gender: male
Race: anthro feline

Pose: standing with his hand (or both hands) in his pocket(s), looking in the general direction of the "camera", but not directly at it
Area: I hang out mostly in the DMFA part of the forum

Area: Forums, banished from the chat.
As it is hinted, he's a dimension traveler, but he doesn't have any control over when he is transported or the dimension to which he is transported. As he non-canonically says to himself: "My life is a reset button some sick and twisted Deity keeps pushing."

OOooooooooh. That clears up some confusion. Thanks.
Zina: Woot. Finally someone curvy. Everyone is going with the "Fit, athletic, kinda skinny' look.
i never claimed to be skinny, in fact i weigh 230 pounds, a big drop from my long time 250. and no, im not fat, i find it somehow weird that i don't look it at all, and other then being tall i have average build... i kinda wonder where i keep all the extra mass....
heh, if curvy is what you want send a PM to Thora, who just joined both the forum and the chat, and likes both so is already part of the community.
shes short, think 'viking dwarf', and has a rack of impressive proportions. also, shes pregnant, which makes her bustitude downright dangerous in addition to the more obvious curves involved in pregnancy
Eowyn, not so curvy yet, but one day she will get there if genetics has anything to say with it. However she does have the market cornered on short.
I'm going with my latest RPG character who also serves as my avatar.
Required:
Name: Gabrielle Starshine a.k.a. Gabi which is also a short version of my real name so you can go with Gabi and keep it intentionally ambiguous.
Gender: female
Race/species: red fox anthro for the purpose of this listing (she wouldn't use those words to describe herself, but they get to the point).
Appearance: you may use my avatar as a reference. Orange fur; long, light green, wavy hair, white markings around the eyes in the shape of drops with the points towards her muzzle, the front side of her neck and torso are also white and so are her hands, writsts, ankles and feet, and the tip of her tail. The tips of her ears are black.
Size: 5'4"
Body type: her body build is that of a regular female, with noticeable curves but nothing unaturally large nor unnaturally thin.
Clothes: comfortable, colorful, and possibly shiny.
Personality: I like the default.
Pose: be creative (in other words it's up to you, as long as it's not offensive).
Props: nothing in particular, but if there's tea, I won't reject it. :mowwink
Area: I hang out at all those places, although I spend more time at The Arena and the IRC chatroom than at the comic-specific forums, and I'm playing the Furrae Chronicles RP.
This is getting to a pretty good start. This is just an update, not a final list of entries.
I'm going to draw people in groups of five, then composite the whole thing into one big line up. People are being drawn first come, first serve, with a little shuffling. (Jouster got bumped up, since he's with the IRC people (edit: got enough people for a IRC group 2 and bumped him back down). Dimi got bumped down cause he's being drawn with Janus.) I'll be putting peoples names with them. Final format for the pic will be a lineup of everybody.
The order that people are drawn in is not going to necessarily be the order they appear in the lineup. (For example, all the people in the IRC group will be shuffled together.)
The list:
Group 1# (Already drawn.)
Aiyno Tajaka
llearch n'n'daCorna
Zedd
Brunhidden
LionHeart
(IRC batch #1)
Danny
ShadesFox
Xeksue
Drathorin (biped)
Wolven
Group #3
Saist
Zina
Tapewolf
Ren Gaulen (Appearing next to Tape)
Ryan Galen (Appearing next to Ren, cause their name are so close and thus, I want him to )
Group #4 (IRC batch 2)
Tony
janus
Dimitri
Sofox
Jouster
Group #5 start with Valynth.
Some characters, larger than others, will be drawn seperatly then added in the background. So far, that's only Drath (in quadruped form) and Alteisentieress (Maybe. I haven't gotten her profile yet, but she seemed interested.)
This is going to be a very wide image.
[EDIT] I would request that people send in their bios via PM or in IRC. I'd rather not fill up an art thread with character profiles.
Still accepting submissions.
[EDIT2]
Once I finish drawing a batch, I'll be sending it to the people in that group for approval. Consider it a sneak peek.

Area: I hang around the irc and lurk the forum occasionally. I do have a FA account so you could notify me there.
Basically the same as any normal furry.
EDIT: I've changed a few things.
Thora says she wants in, but wants to sleep instead of posting, like its all that much effort :rolleyes
her description- she says use her avitar mostly http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e358/Thora_Thorsdottir/mini-minithora.jpg essentially shes a viking chick, but she gets offended with the horny helmets, however shes pregnant
gender- female
race- unknown. shes never really been much into furry, but i always kinda thought of her as a 'Seljord serpent' if she were antrho. or humanish, that works too
hair- blonde, butt length
eyes- brown
height- not entirely sure, she does not quite come up to my armpits and people shorter then me also make fun of her height
weight- im not going to even try now, it'll only change by tomorrow
body type- kinda stocky and very busty, pregnant probably isn't really a body type
clothes- either viking garb or she also wears band shirts and tank tops IRL, also finds chain mail bras to be comfy and supportive undergarments
pose and props- unknown, she occasionally poses with a norse style sword, but shes playful and will play along with those around her

But why would I want to fight your wife? From what I can tell, she is a very nice lady. :)

Actually, I would like to see more character interactions. If neither of you would mind, I might do that.
Kinda friendly sparring like.

I have wiku wiki too. http://dmfa.wikia.com/wiki/Gabi
i think people were shuffled to get them into specific groups, or some people asked to be with others in particular. theres some kind of rhyme or reason to shuffling people

PS: Taken from chat:
Alteisentieress: I'll probably end up screaming something like "I'M 16 FEET TALL AND DRESSED IN THE CARNIVAL OF MEAT OUTFIT"
WhiteFox: Atle, I will draw that unless you submit an actual profile.
I know what the Carnival of Meat outfit is. And I will follow through.
Sigh.
For the last...I dunno, three weeks? I've been pretty burnt out. Mostly because developing techniques in photoshop have been a masochistic process. I dread opening up Photoshop. it's somewhat akin to consciously putting my hand on a red hot burner, my aversion is so strong.
Since I'm mostly back up an running now, and the dread of photoshop has slackened in my hiatus, I'll be back at the grindstone.
Anyway, Since I'm going to be getting back to work, I'm going to be building a more comprehensive website (as opposed to the mess of pages I have now) and starting a new thread.
I haven't been able to work on the Cast image project much, 'cause I ran out of printer ink. Since I'm out of ink, I can't print off the char. bios and draw when I do my daily walk down to the café for a cup of tea. (The Café trip is integral to my artistic process.) I can't draw in front of my computer, with the bios up on the monitor, cause it makes me think about Photoshop.
As an offering to those who I may have offended by dropping off the radar (And not updating the status of the cast pic) I will submit a scribble from my sketch book, selected completely at random.

(At some point, I realized that all my characters were B- or C-cups, and something in my head snapped.)

why is it some people only think A-C cups are normal? i live in a world where an F- cup bra occasionally makes an appearance. listen to my wife sometime and she shall go into a rant about shirts, and how they only make shirts for small chested women, assuming anyone with a larger chest must be some horrible butter tub.
sorry to hear about your ink, perhaps if you take a pencil and jot down abbreviated descriptions on like notecards or something, so its easy to take with you and not requiring ink

Ok, so, I'm a big fat liar.
DSOF#10 Isn't SAIA such a nice place? (http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/comics/dmfa/dsof10.jpg)
So, after being burnt out for a week, I somehow managed to put in a solid 6 hours of work to finish inking, do all the coloring, add speech bubbles (Which remains my second most hated part of production) and even hack together some BG's.
As usual, I'm not all happy with it, but there are parts I like. Jade in panel two was awesome on paper, and I love the BG in panel 1. I paid a lot more attention to the scale between Jade and Theo in this page. Also, I figured out new ways to draw wings not once, but FIVE times as I was drawing/Inking this one. As such, Theo's wings are *Really* messed up. His left and right wings don't match in panel one, did an art shift in panel two (I love those wings), and these are completely revised from what was in the pencils. Theo's hair changes a lot too, I'm still trying to get a decent technique down for hair. There is progress, tho. So, I dont' like Theo's constantly changing look, but it just means I'm developing my skills, I guess.
Sorted out a new method for shading, too. A lot more groundwork in the pencil stage goes a long way.
Anyway... I'm not making an HTML page for this one till I get the new site up. Which might be a while.
No screams? Does the librarian just want a word with Jade as well?
Anyway, I wouldn't have noticed the wings if you hadn't mentioned it. I'm not sure which I prefer. But yes, the shading is good.
you know, this comic and what he just said really gives me some..... ideas....
then again dungeon keeper was always my favorite game, cool to think of it as a career/major

That's not the librarian, just so you know.
