Ok Amber hid some character profiles, has anyone had any luck finding them? I've clicked on almost everything on the site and no luck yet
what I would like is hints no all out maps to how to find them
what I wouldn't mind is knowing which profiles I'm looking for it would help in the search
Heh, I have found nothing, nothing! ;.; ..Or do we follow the white rabbit? ;) :bunny
I found all the character profiles! But I cannot tell you where they are, as I have been sworn to secrecy by the Nigerian consulate.
However, if you give me your bank accounts and credit card numbers and PINs, plus your Social Security #, I will be able to electronically transfer the information to your accounts!

i could tell you how, but it's incredibly convoluted, and you'd need an electron microscope, particle accelerator, a bag of pretzels, a stick of gum (mint), a shaved ferret, the hair of the wiku worm that bit you, a rubber band, the blueprints of the titanic & the hindenburg, a crate of gold bullion, the frozen body of walt disney, and a paperclip.
it'd prolly end up with you with a hefty bounty on your head, wanted in several countries by interpol, and a spot on "jerry springer".. but you'd have your answer, right? >:3

After raiding every store in town and several museums, I've recovered a bag of pretzels, a stick of mint gum, a shaved ferret (after severe injuries to my body and personal trauma, but that's nothing a few online articles written by real-life ferret attack victims on Wikipedia and some therapy won't fix), and the blueprints to the titanic, which is the younger brother of the Titanic, as indicated by its lack of capitalization. I didn't find the blueprints to the Hindenburg, but I drew something which is hopefully at least somewhat similar using my crayons and a model of the Hindenkeaton. I already have Walt Disney's body; I've been ritualistically trying to resurrect him since I saw the previews for the Fox and the Hound sequel so that way he can go back over and reclaim his empire. It's amazing what you can find on Ebay nowadays.
I'm not really sure what this is going to accomplish, but at least I'm getting some exercise by running all over the country.

I don't think this has anything to do with the 'invisible' cast page but thought it might be either a hint or a bug.

They do, but the bans are part of it. They can't shut down the forum as a whole for maintenance; other than that, permissions are more or less shared.
Some of us have focus on some bits, and some others. For example, D concentrates on the Lost Lake area and the Haunted Ballroom, RJ tends to watch the Tower of Art, and I do the underlying code, but we can all pinch-hit for each other, as it were.
Does that help?
The best part was when I found out people were using stupid scripts to find them so I removed the links for a couple hours while they ran their searches.

To be perfectly honest, I was surprised you did. I had expected some weird hidden message spread out letter by letter in commented out parts of the HTML or some other chicanery.
About half an hour was wasted because I had this cuckoo idea that you'd inserted some kind of hint or link at the end of a bunch of spaces so it could only be seen if you scrolled the source code to the far right :B
Apparently
Groo The Wanderer had a secret message encoded in binary in the patterns of someone's cloak or something. My brother never got that issue so I never managed to verify it.
**EDIT**
And one of the pictures on my website has a message encoded in it which is only visible if you edit the palette since it's a GIF file with two black colours. Even I can't remember which picture it is though...

Truthfully, I had wanted to keep it simple...and something that people later on might be able to uncover just by accident if they were wandering around. These weren't necessarily meant to be insanely difficult or requiring one to traverse seventeen pages to find them...which is probably why it is more insulting than anything to know people used scripts to find them.

Erm, you didn't expect this to happen? You announced that two links were hidden somewhere, somehow. Your site has 1000+ pages, and without knowing what to look for, it's pure coincidence for somebody to notice the hidden links the first time through (I had actually started going through the archives and mousehovering over ALL the mow icons to see if one of them might be The Link... and before that, I hovered over all the links on the Downloads page to see if you had maybe changed the 800*600 link of the tenth wallpaper or something.) Heck, I browsed by the page(s) with the hidden link(s) at least three times without noticing them (then again, now I'm not sure there WERE any links since I might have browsed in that linkless window).
So people using tools to auto-mine for links was pretty much a natural reaction, all things considered (before you ask: No, not me, but mostly because I didn't have a GUI-based tool handy at the moment)
Using tools? Yes. Promoting said tools and apparently using the unnoffical chat as a base of operations? No.
Normally I could care little if people are using particular means, but if they are going to be public about it and announce their intents to the point that I am able to spot it, then I'm going to react. In much the same way of my reaction to people pirating software, I don't care if people are doing it...but I don't want to hear about it.
If I'm actually able to figure out the means of which people are finding the pages, then you are doing it wrong. Cause really, I'm lazy and not all that bright. It's only when people get show-off and chatty that I get any indicator. :U
I'm so enraged by this i can only find one and the other is killing me slowly :cry

Reading through this thread, all the hints you need are right here.
Took a total of about five minutes since I missed the first one the first time. Second one was a tiny bit harder to find, but was exactly where I thought it'd be after I thought about it.
technically all the missing character profiles would be on mabsland...with characters that haven't been integrated, or exist only as part of a parallel DMFA reality in amber's mind. although it would take considerably less effort for her to incorporate them into the cannon series.

If you really want to be nasty, have the links created dynamically using Javascript and DOM (Domain Object Model) with the Javascript contained in an external file.
Another approach would be to intercept keystrokes and only have the link appear if the user types in "Amber is Great".
I actually use a very simple procedure.
1. Look

Probably never. They are secret pages for a reason. :U
I should point out, that there isn't any harm if a person wanted to PM another forum member the information, or someone simply asking someone who knows. While half the gimmick is trying to scout out the pages, another half can sometimes just be sharing a secret with a friend.

Truer words have never been said Amber...And how did you get out the Bishi fun pit? >:3
I dunno if I can say what 'tool' I used to find the first page...

What?!? I was gonna wait until they were made legitimate!
DAMN!
Ok, I'll wait until they are added to the Wiku-Wiki. If these pages are genuine information, it's gotta be put up there sometime.
there are secret pages?
No, really, there are secret pages?
(that should help anyone who can't find either of them. This thread's appearance was the first I heard of it.)
hmm... between being lazy, having better things to do than waste apparently 6 hours scouring 1000+ pages for one or two links, and knowing for fact that I SUCK at these kinds of puzzles(yeah, OK, the hints are all in this thread. That doesn't help!), and because Amber has said it's OK, I'm going to ask for the links to be PM'd to me.
Anyone? Anyone feel like being nice? I won't share them, promise.
[edit]
wow, that was fast. Thanks, [no, you can't know who sent it to me].
hmm, I wonder if posting my initial reaction, vague as it would be, would be a bad thing.
Better safe than sorry.
I've no idea how to find the second one, but I'm guessing it might be Mab's daughter. XD
Could someone please spoil it for me too? ;)
EDIT: Thanks. :bunny

I guess we'll have to watch our tongues, then, and make sure not to slip...
I've been searching for 6 hours (not and exaggeration) does someone feel nice and care to pm me where one of the pages is, I'd be extremely happy with just one! :U Or even a someone obvious hint, or something to narrow my search, anything, please? I won't tell a soul!

Well it's really more or less how cautious you want to be. One problem with revealing the information on the pages is that if people ask for validation or where you got that from, you are now in a tight spot.
Now, odds are if/when information on them becomes known in main DMFA canon, they will be more than likely free to discuss here. And odds are at some point the pages themselves might de-secretize a couple years from now and go to the main cast page. However, as long as the stuff in the pages contain secrets and spoilers in regards to the comic, they are things that shouldn't be discussed on the forum. Thats the price of having secret pages.
I've found them. I used a magic key on my mystical mythical surf board that was magically adjusted to find things according to my mental image of what I want found by the powers of Greyskull as a reward for defeating the magic soccer ball ninja golem of the nineteenth dimension..

Of course, that wouldn't work, as anyone who could code(which, looking at the technology-savvy crew here, means probably 50%) would end up creating some sort of brute-force page finder, which is horribly wasteful bandwidth wise, and very slow.

Apparently Groo The Wanderer had a secret message encoded in binary in the patterns of someone's cloak or something. My brother never got that issue so I never managed to verify it.
**EDIT**
And one of the pictures on my website has a message encoded in it which is only visible if you edit the palette since it's a GIF file with two black colours. Even I can't remember which picture it is though...
Well, I am going to have to download all your .GIF files and run it through a script. :rolleyes

Well, I spent more time looking for them *with* the view-links trick than I would have by just looking normally most likely. I hope your happy! :cry

Well, I didn't even known about the link-hunt until Janus told us in the unofficial IRC, as well as approximately where they are - I have logs! >:3
Well, next time I suppose I shouldn't say anything around Janus about what cool trick I used to find it.

Actually I was using Opera. One of the features it's had for... I think a couple of years now... is a function that shows all of the links on a page. As far as I know FireFox has nothing like that, so in my view, people who were using FireFox scripts were overworking themselves :mowtongue

If you really want to be nasty, have the links created dynamically using Javascript and DOM (Domain Object Model) with the Javascript contained in an external file.
Another approach would be to intercept keystrokes and only have the link appear if the user types in "Amber is Great".
-way- overused! It has been used so many times that there are plenty of Firefox extensions out there for viewing external JavaScript.

Why don't you create a forum for discussing hidden info which has a password you would only know if you found the page, perhaps the name of the page, or, like in old games, something like "line 5, word 30". This way we would be free to talk about it and no one who had not read the page would be viewing this forum.

There aren't all that many DMFA characters who lack profiles on the cast page. Try to guess who they might be and then explore existing pages that might relate to them. Tabbing through all the links on a page to look for ones that don't belong might help, too.

I feel like a bit of a geek wad for signing up to ask, but in my defense, I've been meaning to sign up for some time, just didn't have the courage. So, I found the first secret cast page (and was VERY happy with it, gorgeous, very informative as well) but the next one is eluding me. (If I spelled that wrong, feel free to smack me.) Found the first with simple guesstimation and a good memory, but I doubt that'll help me this time around. Please help? Thank you!
(I really, really love this emoticon --> :ipod )

Dude, agreed with PMing me with some info. I did find one, but the other is eluding me, and it's gotten so bad that I was dreaming about it last night. ;.;

after trudging through the archives, inspecting every link to find something fishy, i found nothing.

Wow, so much talk over something whose contents we are forbidden to reveal!
I've found them. While I was working. I was mad at my bosses so I searched for them while they weren't looking.
I surrender! My search time is so short and spread out that I can't remember what I've already looked at!
Well, I found one at least. Frustrating part is, I used logical deduction for that one and found it in about two minutes. The other one must be hidden sneakily.
Oh well, I'll need a PM to see the other one.

I'm not looking for them, and people (no names) are actively trying to get me to find them giving obnoxious hints and the like. Sooner or later, someone will just give me the links and I won't have to have lifted a finger or wasted any time doing it. :3

Easter Eggs? i must find them. not that i have herd of them i shall begin to digitally scourer the comic site to find them.... quick question though. how many am i looking for? it seems i missed some guest art while i was gone as well but i hope that will be in the archives.
Firstly - thanks and a virtual hug to Amber for the great comic that's been so entertaining to so many people (myself included) over the years!
Secondly - you can add another mark to your wall. Or maybe half a mark since I'm on hiatus...
And thirdly - hee hee - I found zee little wuns! I was going to do a little something to prove it, but then I thought about it for half a second and I realized that that would i) not mean anything and ii) make it more likely to spoil it by giving something away.
To those that have not found the secret pages, I just say re-read this thread. You'll probably end up finding them when you're not even looking...

I have found the second one at last! Thankies to those who PM'd the hints! And ya know, the logic method that found the first one for me did actually work in that it was where I suspected. The link was just so inconspicuous I missed it when trying to find it just on my own and thus I went through everything on the entire site afterward. Even with the hints, I had to scan every milimeter of the place for 20 mins before I finally spotted it!

I think it's a KDE special. I've never seen Firefox do this on any platform, and Safari won't either. You might want to post a screenshot of it doing this (not of the restricted pages obviously!)
I'd do it myself, but I stopped Konqueror from doing this as it would misinterpret my attempts to do CTRL-T etc, sometimes catastrophically (sending unfinished PMs etc). And I can't remember how to set it back :P
If you are using Firefox, there is an option under Tools marked "Page Info". This opens a window showing a lot of information about the page and one of the tabs within the window will show all of the links on the page. I am running Firefox on a Macintosh, so it might be in a slightly different location on Windows, Linux, and other UNIX variants. I don't know of anything providing links with single keystrokes, but I'm not familiar with everything in Firefox and it might be a special add-on.

The letters in boxes are the link identifiers. The letters themselves are the shortcuts. You "click" the link if you hit that key.
I apoligise, everyone. I completely misread the post.
With Firefox on Windows, you can <Tab> through the links one at a time, and if you right click > View Page Info, then go to the links tab, you can see the links.
If you have DownThemAll, its easier - right click > DownThemAll, and you get a nice, easy to read, list of links - basically just a formated version of the View Page Info thing.
-RobbieThe1st
The LinkCounter Add-on for Firefox also works well.

The most annoying part about all this is that next time a new secret page is added, it won't be advertised, people will have to find out about it the old fashioned way - ny finding it.

In Safari 3, you can set up your own styles that will apply before the style sheet in the document.
If you create a file links.css and place the following line in it
a {border: solid red thick; }
You can then go to the Advanced tab under Safari -> Preferences and select the links.css file using the Style pull-down menu. This will surround all anchor tags with a thick red border (the a in <a href= stands for anchor), making them much easier to see. Now, if Amber uses something besides an anchor tag to insert the hidden links, this won't work. With this setting, you can go through a large number of web pages quickly.
I'm not sure if you can do this in Safari 2 or Firefox.

You can do this in IE 6 and up, I think, and FF 1 and up, for sure. It's part of the "allowing people with disabilities to use the 'net" thing - enables users to override the website with their own settings.
How you accomplish it varies in different browsers, mind, but the idea is there.

I don't know. Unless you try to pick up the clicks with input or textarea tags, you are starting to get into the "results are undefined" territory.
I was thinking more of keystroke capture or image maps myself. Of course, the classic from the movie would be to have a "search" input text field and show the secret page if a special word is entered in the field.
Well, I was thinking more simple, for ease of page modification. You can make a span tag that performs the exact same function as an anchor tag (but doesn't behave like one or show up to link highlighters) by inserting a single javascript line to change the page. The other stuff, people may get sispicious when a new feature is added. :)
I believe the idea would be to implement the feature, and wait a month or so to put an easter egg into it.
I doubt Amber would go for that, though. I think she's more of the opinion that, if people are going to be like that, she might as well just link them on the cast page.
Which is a bit sad, really. I enjoyed looking for them, even though I'd been provided links to them to start with (on grounds of, "if anyone posts these, remove the post and beat them senseless, thank-you dear mods" or words to that effect...)

I don't think an onclick event can be received except by an element that can receive focus. It might work on Internet Explorer 6, but that's always marched to the beat of a different drummer. I just tried with Firefox and Safari 3, and it didn't seem to work there. When you try to complicate things on web pages, my experience is that they tend to behave weirdly between browsers and between versions of the same browser.
That's why I liked llearch's little box creature icons. It has a nice effect, but only required the basic portions of the HTML specification.
When it comes to what people will do to hack web sites, there doesn't seem to be any limit to what some people will do, regardless of whether it's DMFA, Second Life, or World of Warcraft. I can think of ways in which things could be hidden so that hackers couldn't find it, but I don't see how anyone else would find it either.
As any good stage magician (as opposed to the people in DMFA who can really do magic), you should never repeat a trick because people will then know what to look for. Perhaps there could be other fun things to be placed on the pages: word finds, coloring pages, perhaps something else. Perhaps all the programmers (or people who claim to be programmers) on the forums could use their powers for good, creating games and amusements to be placed on the site.

Hmm, that's odd, the on-click should be attachable to any visible screen element; that's how a lot of drop-down menus are created.
The point is, though, that the links could be hidden in on-click properties of various items in order to hide them from creative use of CSS. :)

Also the hotkey in Firefox.
I meant you simply right-click> view source, press CTRL+F to bring up the find box, type in '<a href=', and F3 through the links. Simple!
Of cource, as it is now, there is pretty much no way to stop people from being able to view the source of a page with HTML.
That is why flash and java are used quite a bit for 'secure' data showing, such that people cannot view the source, however even that won't stop an experienced person. Simply, the problem with 'protecting' content from the viewer and only letting the user view it in the way it was intended to be viewed, is that no matter the amount of security you place on an bit of data, it has to be decoded on the viewing end, which means that at that point, the user can copy and mess with the data.
Just put a link like you were doing, and use CSS to have it be invisible or the same color as the surrounding text.
<_< I had an ebil idea: What if you had your hidden page be a normal page, and have it such that, depending on the referrer, it would show either the standard page or the hidden information(/both). As the decision would be server-based, it would be impossible to detect, and while you can fake a referrer, you would have to know the exact referrer in this case to trigger it. If you hot-linked the page, it would show up the normal information, which would confuse most people.
As Llearch knows, this is really simple to implement with php(about 2 lines), and, being server based, the viewer could not detect it.
Even knowing that the code is used, it would be impossible to use that information to any real advantage.
if(isset($_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"]) && stristr($_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"],"*page*")) {
echo "your hidden info";
} else {
echo "the normal info";
};
Quite simple, and adaptable to work with just about anything.
You could even replace the echo "";'s with include("");'s to display a full page.

include, eh?
Does that work with including a flat HTML file?
(I've got some pages from when I was just learning PHP that seriously need updates... and that would certainly help in re-writing the security...)
I'm not going to upgrade the difficulty bar just so a few people can feel more challenged. Part of the point was that these were also supposed to be links people could randomly come across. If people can't play by the rules, I'll just simply not let them know when there is a game.

Yup, thats the point - it basically just passes through the included file direct to the browser(as well as what other code has been echo'd).

Well, true enough, however, as I just posted, for people doing the hunt properly, it would not change the difficulty at all, just it would make it nearly impossible to cheat.
I doubt that you(/llearch) will implement my suggestion, all things considered, but it would be much simpler to implement and work better than most things posted here.

As Robbie says, yes. Basically, if you include a file, it treats the file as a standard php file - with all the restrictions that has; any code needs to be included in
<?php ?>
tags, otherwise the whole file is treated as html.
So if you want to include html, just include it, and it'll magically work. This is often used to include -chunks- of html, in my experience; for example, having the whole site use a standard header or footer, and replace the bit in the middle. Or to load a default menu on every page, you can have the menu as a separate file. This means if you change one link, you change it in one place, rather than having to edit every single file on the site. This is what's known as "smart" ;-]
I can see how that would be useful :3
The piece in question is a hoooge-arse form that I wrote before security was an issue(and before I figured out I could make a function for writting drop-downs that appear more than once in the form). Look in the PHP books for session control and session awareness. Starting with PHP 4, you have the ability to store variables that will be available to all of the pages in a session. This would include a variable indicating that the session was authenticated. You simply set the pages so that if the variable indicates the session hasn't been authenticated, all the user gets is a request to log in.
book?
see, actually, I've been teaching myself PHP from PHP.org for the last year. I should have looked at the section on session control more closely, because I missed the bit about authenticated sessions you mentioned.

I remember saying way back that I was gonna just wait until they came up on the DMFA Wiki. Well, that actually prompted someone to go do just that, I checked it out, it had links to the pages, but I didn't actually click on them just yet. I went after them a little later, only to find they had been mysteriously deleted.

The pages state "Do not tell anyone IN PUBLIC about these pages on pain of bannination from the forum" - the person who posted them to the WikuWiki posted them within 12 hours of them appearing on the site. This was felt to be somewhat of a thumbing of the nose at the request within the pages themselves.
Erm. I'm paraphrasing, of course. And yes, technically the WikuWiki isn't the forum. It is, however, a public listing, and there was no spoiler space or anything - just out and out copies of the content of the hidden pages. Close enough to be dodgy.
Edit:
Forty-two. What an auspicious number.
Oh WONDERFUL :[

hey when will we see them not hidden :3
Probably never. They are secret pages for a reason. :U
What?!? I was gonna wait until they were made legitimate!
DAMN!
Ok, I'll wait until they are added to the Wiku-Wiki. If these pages are genuine information, it's gotta be put up there sometime.
Does this mean they're never going to be put in the Wiki? If so, please send me links to the pages. I am the worst person at finding things in the world. If I'm not told exactly where something is, I will never find it, much to the ire of many who ask me to look for things for them :doh This is why I haven't even tried to look for the pages.
[flashback]This also got to be a little embarassing during my family Easter Hunts, when, even though I was the oldest, I was always the last to find my basket :C (the difficulty was age-based, so, because I was the oldest, my basket was always the most well-hidden, while the little kiddies had ones that were in plain sight, or close to it) Sometimes we even did batches of color-coded plastic eggs, in and outdoors. Again, me in last place 'A'[/flashback]
...Soooo...is it ever going to be put up in the Wiki? If not, pages please? :<
Well, if you ask, we'll send it. If you make vague comments about looking for it, it's unclear if you -like- not finding it, or if you didn't look for ages but are looking now, didn't look for ages but found recently, or what...
And you ruined my perfect forty-two. ;-]
.. I remember with our yearly easter egg hunts. I remember Dad found one of his one year, from the previous year. I also remember finding one of mine not too long ago that had been -glued- into an empty walnut shell. My sister likes me, honest. ;-]
Of course, us having 8 or so parents and kids wandering around, there's a -lot- of places where eggs can be found. We had a standing rule of Nobody, but Nobody tells Anybody where their eggs are. You can hint, if they ask for it, but other than that, no. So you get things like eggs in plain sight for the little ones - sitting under plants, or in the fruit bowl, or that sort of thing - all the way up to balanced on top of a picture frame (for short person) and wedged between picture frame and wall - in one memorable case, both of these at the same time for two different people. Or inside decks of cards, or balanced on the top of a book in one or more of he bookcases, or in the hat of one of the people walking around the room (that one was -real- hard to figure out, because "cold, warm, cold" kept changing...) or the like.
Many, many happy years spent looking. ;-] And hiding, for that matter. I think Dad had one of his still missing, because we put it inside the sugar container, -under- the sugar. Almost - just the label showing, so you could see it without moving it. (one of the rules, of course)
Damn walnuts.
I was already threatened... so I won't post them up again (if ever) for a long while...
I cave :(
Found one, but the second one eludes me. Can't say which of course because that would be a breach :p So I suppose sending both would be the best way to go.
Pm #43 (or is it 44 now?) please? :mowninja :mowcookie
Forty-four people.
Somewhat less than that PMs, because I did a bunch of group PMs.
Thanks!
:eager 8) :)
You're welcome. ;-]
I've tried. I've really tried. I've checked over links. I've clicked every image I could find. I've done everything but go back through the entire archive looking. ...and if one or both of them are hidden in the archives, than Amber has passed the line from "Evil" to "Sadistically Evil". Of course, if it HAD been in the archives, fewer people would have found it, and this thread would have even MORE requests. The only explanation I can come up with is that I have somehow managed to miss the hidden links for a month and a half already.
With that in mind, I am forced to throw in the towel. I can't use up all my free time panning over the website anymore. I barely allow any time to reading other webcomics. I don't even watch TV anymore. I haven't even touched my brand new PS3! Ratchet & Clank calls to me...
...ahem. Anyway, I gave it my best, and fell short. Feel free to point out just how blatantly obvious the links really are. ...please? :cry
Hahah, I found one easily. Just looked at a certain character's cast page. (The link is hidden, obviously. Clicking pictures for this one will get you nowhere. Try reading the cast pages. Slowly and carefully...>:3)
The other one, I cheated to find. But then again, in the DMFA universe, dragons are cheaters...>:3 I might go and try to find it later without cheating when I have some free time.
Forty-five...
Well, ~I~ feel silly now. How on Furrae did I miss those for so long? :mowdizzy
Luck?
Sweet. I stumbled across the first one by accident. I freaked for a bit thinking the PM count was the number of easter eggs. Somebody else pointed me to the page with the second egg.
Hooray for easter eggs, whether the be digital, dyed, or cream filled.
It's funny, I found one purely on a "I haven't noticed that there before" click, and now that I know there are two, I've spent hours looking for the second one, to no luck. Is it breaking the rules for someone to send me a PM telling me where they are? *bats eyelashes*
Forty-seven...
No, it's not against the rules to send PMs. Have a look at the page you found, and read closely. It specifies what is and is not against the rules in it...
Alright, so... a long time after Amber had told us about these secret pages, I forgot about them completly. One day, while going through the site, I found one of them. My reaction to the link was curiousity, then shock, and then love of that pic. My words were something along the lines of " OMG! [Censored]." I have been searching on and off for the other one.
I am tired and weary. Please either PM the links or the page's they're on.
Forty-eight.
I found one. All you do is ... (censored). he he.
And then i was like O My Gods! i found the second one, but it turned out to be nothing
I can't take anymore. *Sob.* I found one. And I can't find the other. Someone! Help! *Yet another person who joined the forum solely for help.*
*Steeples fingers*
Alright. I'm going for a middle ground here. I still want to *find* them on my own, I just want to know three things...
1: Is the link visually noticeable? Will I see it if I need to click it?
2: Are any of the eggs located in the archives?
Yes, the links are visually noticeable.
No, they are not in the archives.
And Forty-Nine.
is this a game for you Llearch?
... Currently we're at 25 for 49.
Yes, why do you ask? ;-]
Are you going to throw a party of some sort when you hit 100?
Of course he is, Volfram! Why else would he be counting? :)
Oh! I found them both! Juicy, juicy, juicy.
I had found the first one when all this was announced, but never found the second. I randomly decided to look for it again, and it was actually a pretty quick find this time!
I was definitely broadening my search a little -too- much before, but keeping one thing in mind helped me loads. Relations. Think relations, people.
(e.g. Alexsi is related to Dan, who likes cookies. Mab also likes cookies, therefor Mab must be trying to kill Dan and take over the universe! OH! UNIVERSE! I know exactly where that link would be! *click*)
I was expecting the first hidden page I found, sorta walked right to it. But the second took a bit of thinking. I was actually looking for things related to some other person whom is involved in the storyline that we know not much about when I found the second hidden page. Is there anyplace where people who have found the pages are discussing the information found within? There are quite a few questions about -blank- hitting my mind right now. With a hammer.
(Also, I could have sworn I recreated my account when the forums first moved. Was there a information wipe of some kind in my lurking absence of the forums?)
They're taboo, unfortunately. :x Sorry, can't be spoken of.
As for the account, unused ones get purged every now and again by the mods.
You can discuss the details, provided It's not on the foRum, Certainly. (there is a subtle hint in there somewhere.)
The accounts... any account with less than, oh, about 10 posts or so, that hasn't logged in for more than 6 months, is likely to be deleted on grounds of "well, they're really not that interested in the forum, are they?" sort of thing. If you don't want your account deleted, post a little, and turn up more often. ;-]
i take it i'm in no danger of that then. my account being considered unused that is.

I didn't actually cave. I demand to be counted as .5
I further demand one meeeillion...
*Thunderbolt'd*
Yay! Found both of them, finally :boogie
Was about to create an account just to ask for a hint, but then I recalled one of my programming classes... If you want to find a certain word/phrase (like a password) and don't care how long it takes, there's a method called "brute forcing" it. Basically go through every combination until you find the answer. So that's what I did. I turn on some tetris music, and went through all the pages (leaving the archives for last or obvious reasons O_o) in order, looking at every link on every page. I found both of them within twenty minutes (total searching time: 45-60 minutes). In retrospect, the locations of both make quite a bit of sense, that much I'll say. It was fun and I enjoyed the reward. Even if I completely forgot about them until I poked my head into this place...

The best part was when I found out people were using stupid scripts to find them so I removed the links for a couple hours while they ran their searches.
Oh well. I guess next time I wont even bother letting there be an actual link but make people have to guess the word since people can't play nice. :V
Let me be first to say you're probably not the first to try this.
And of course, there are a few counter-measures that can be used to fight brute-force approaches. For example, make a link on a page that is white foreground and background and only a pixel in size. That way, it will only be found by a brute-force approach. Then when the user tries to access the page, have it display something like the following message: "You have triggered Black Ice. Prepare to die" with a countdown timer. You could also have the page log itself so that you can identify who did it. (Match the IP address used to access the page with the IP addresses used to place items in the forum.)
The person won't know it was logged, so when he receives an e-mail saying that he has been warned, he will be surprised.
This is known as a "honey pot".
Actually, when the person posts in the forum, it doesn't matter if they've viewed the page or not. Posting the content of the pages in the forum counts as an insta-ban, due to the warning on the pages themselves.
And setting up a honey pot is all well and good, but requires specialised knowledge to set up effectively - which Amber, being an artist, lacks. So... what would you rather? That Amber spends time working on images for the comic, or that Amber spends time learning how to set up a honey pot?
I know which one -I- prefer... ;-]
I wasn't indicating that Amber should set up a honey pot. What I wanted to indicate was that for those who think that they can circumvent things on the net, there are ways of detecting them. More of a theoretical/hypothetical situation.
Actually, I don't really view this approach as brute force. To me, brute force would be using combinatorial techniques to try to identify all possible names for web pages and to use that as a candidate for a search. For example, using all of the character names as the possible names of web pages, a brute-force technique that Amber obviously considered as she undertook the introduction of countermeasures.
Besides, Amber has a wealth of fans who would be willing to provide protective assistance, many of whom who I'm sure are far more devious than me.
heh. Granted, granted.
However, as forum admins, it's -our- responsibility to ensure that we've taken reasonable precautions to back Amber up. That's fair enough, isn't it?
After all, we wouldn't want you to say you hadn't been warned...
