Dramatic lighting effects! Also lightning! Freaking out Abel! "Fuck you so hard"!

Considering the tune of the last few comics in the arc, I find this one incredibly mirthful.

On the serious side of things, it looks like Falina DOES know of the newest addition to the Academy.. unless that's just random ion particles sparking off, but in the Academy? Unlikely.

Fa'lina said that she was omniscient within the academy, so I would assume that she does know.
Also, Abel's eyes in the last panel are amusing.

Well, his eyes can move at least.
Interesting that Aniz is being all friendly now, still he's an incubus and they tend to be  emotionally unstable...

I can't help wondering if the last comment by Aniz is a threat or wishful thinking...

After all, even Pip described Fa'lina as beautiful.

However if she is a permanently beautiful succubus, why does she wear so much make up?

Aniz looks good in his new threads but still has the S.A.M hair style.

His stance changes per panel as if he's slowly getting up. (apart from the lightning ones)
Also, now he's on his home turf, with his beloved son. Wouldn't you be friendly?

Eh, I get the feeling that our good friend Aniz isn't exactly on the best of terms with our better friend Amelia Earhar- I mean Fa'lina.

Don't think you can be sure, but I actually am starting to get the feeling that he cares for Abel as his son, even if he's bad at showing it.  Some people show it with love and kisses, others show it by slicing foreheads and beating mothers and kidnapping and whatnot.

Reading over this post, I realize that sleep deprivation is not a good thing for me.

Edit: Oh, and kudos to Fa'lina for ticking Aniz off

My pet theory has been that he died a few years before the mainline began.  The evidence for that really hinges on how Abel and Aniz get on now they're both in the Academy.

In the first frame?  Looks a bit like it.  Shapeshifting helps of course, but when you don't need food at all anymore, I imagine you'd have to watch your diet if you want to keep your base form lean.

Given what we know about the future, I suspect that this the chickens are coming home to roost.

Could it be that the shirt (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Abel_97.php) had a magic spell on it that made him appear slimmer.  And that's why he really loved that shirt?

Well, Falinas lucky that Pip is not around (http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_129.php).

From page 58 onward its pretty much been a nonstopping :cry :mowdizzy :mowsad ride for Abel and me as as the reader (thanks to character empathy :hug). Sure it was successful in carving deep scars in Abels mind, but i for one can enjoy watching childhood traumas only for so long.

With corpses, blood and traumas on the left and relationship problems and curses and evil faes on the right i kinda miss the old lighthearted absurd stuff. I guess since im not a big fan of baseless speculation, mainly story-driven arcs just arent my cup of tea. They include too much of that "sense making" thingy.

Aniz was mad because Fa'lina tried to scare his son with a practical joke.   The eight ball says, "Yes."

I think it was Edward that killed him.  It would explain why Abel seems to owe him for something.

Yep, that's the one.  That particular variant only works if Abel still despises him about 350 years later, though there are other versions where they've made their peace and Edward saved him.

The odd thing is, I do not think the lighting and thunder scared Abel.  Surprised him, yes.  Of all the things that happened to Abel this day, the lighting and thunder, which were outside, were the most normal.  Compare Abel's mouth in the second picture and the last.  In the second picture, scared.  In the last, he is just pensive.

With regards,
Ted

Could be. Or it could just be a combination of the way he's standing, leaning slightly back, and the bulky jacket.

I wonder, though, what did Fa'lina mean with the flash of lightning? Just a spot of dramatic necessity? An "I'm watching" message to Aniz? Both?

I love how the lightning effects make Aniz get shocked.

Also, in response to this:

Oh, by the way... to the people who's saying that he has a potbelly: here's something I just thought of...

In the first panel (which i the one in question), he's kinda got his pelvis thrust forward (Read: Sexy Villain Pose #69), but his arm's obscuring his back, so you can't quite see the "arch" in it.  QED, he has no pot belly.

...nothing else to say.

see the red winged Dali in the middle panel, that's  Aniz disguised as Xander I'm sure of it...

(insert paranoid circumstantial evidence)

You mean the one that's wearing glasses, and looks female?

Some of you guys are REALLY reaching with these theories. O_o

Since you insist:

This was originally my theory and as a rule I don't normally put my weight behind a theory unless it has at least three pieces of evidence in support of it, and less than three which I can't counter against it.

In this case, the eyes were the same, the hair was the same, and more importantly the spot pattern was the same.  Someone who's longsighted is going to need glasses when studying but not when taking out targets from a distance with a longbow.
From what we can see I couldn't tell if they were female or not (Abel confused the heck out of people), and in any case the SAIA dalmatian turned up like a year before Xander, so there could easily have been some artistic drift.
The only thing that was obviously out of whack was the ears, and it seemed more likely that he had changed them some as some kind of shapeshifter fashion statement than it was all a big coincidence.

However, as it turns out she is a succubus not an incubus and Amber reused the colour scheme because it looks cool.

Hmm. Well, Abel of course doesn't know yet about Fa'lina and her special abilities while she's in SAIA, so maybe he's just looking for whoever Aniz is talking to. That's one sneaky poodle, though, wouldn't surprise me too much if you were right.

My vision is of Fa'lina sneaking up behind Aniz while gesturing to Abel to stay quiet.  And then scaring Aniz into jumping twenty feet.  After all, this does seem to be a habit of Fa'lina.

sneaking up on Dan (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_486.php) and repeat (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_490.php)

sneaking up on Abel (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_532.php)

sneaking up on Merlitz (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_559.php)

sneaking up on Dan again (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_580.php)

sneaking up on Pyroduck (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_727.php)

Villains with a sense of timing make me very happy. Rock on.

I'm glad to see the setting has changed from the drama for a bit. It was beginning to make me nervous that Abel would be a tragic hero.

My dear llearch, one of the most basic facts about tragic heroes is lacking in Abel's life so far. So let me tell it through a memory.

(English class, sophomore year. Book: One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. One of the only two good books we had all year.)

Mrs. Brian: Now, we've been studying a lot of tragic heroes this year. McMurphy is following the pattern of a tragic hero. What are some of the common traits about tragic heroes?
Me (realization striking): ...THEY DIE! *thinking* Oh sh*%, McMurphy's gonna die! No no no no no!!! I'm so sick of people dying!

Along with this, he doesn't have hubris until after the tragic event occurs, and that's so he can deflect the pain of his memories. So plot-wise, he is a tragic hero, just not a typical one.

No, they don't.  In the Oedipus trilogy, Oedipus survives until the end of the third play, and Creon dies of old ageat an old age after the end of Antigone.

I don't know if Achilles counts as a tragic hero, but he's still breathing at the end of the Iliad.

I'm not sure, but this definition of a tragic hero seems appropriate (http://tttc.org/projects/JZarro2/process2.html).  My problem with defining Abel as a tragic hero is not whether he has had a downfall, but what he has done to deserve that downfall.  I could see Aniz becoming a tragic hero  (He certainly has enough personality flaws.), but I don't see what Abel has done that shows a personality flaw leading to his downfall.

True, Oedipus lives. But at the cost of his sight and what was left of his sanity.

And I never read all of The Iliad, but Achilles did die due to a weakness, which is typical of tragic heroes.

Incidentally, is Macbeth a tragic hero or not? He seems more like a bad guy to me...

But his hamartia was in leaving the battle because Agamemnon wouldn't give him Briseis.  His catharsis is in the form of Sarpedon dying.  No misfortune happens to Achilles himself, and he is felled much later by an arrow to the heel.
