Question:
Let the thread die?
Option 1: Yeah...
Option 2: No!
I was digging out my scanner, which I'd put away earlier this week, to scan in more pages for my webcomic (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor), when I found these. They're really, really old versions of the comic, before some very important rewrites, and before I learned a few new tricks.
this one is roughly 1 year old, now (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/old/old1.jpg), and that sequence has been changed completely.
this one is roughly 2 years old (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/old/old2.jpg), but the sequence it takes place in is currently pretty much unchanged from when I drew it.
Don't be surprised if you don't see anything like either of those in the comic as it stands now, because the story arcs they take place in are a long ways off.
New stuff here!
Ink'd! (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,3330.msg166433.html#msg166433) and colored.
Also, I'm going to go ahead and let this thread die. I don't update often enough to justify it, and nobody really seems to care.

3D art
Model (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,3330.msg159387.html#msg159387) I've been working on for some time. About a year now, I think.
Crimson Skies (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/crimsonskies.jpg) Made in Terragen(links to image)
Gliderboard (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/gliderboard.jpg). Scenery in terragen, glider modeled in Wings, Glider and character posed and rendered in Daz Studio, Aiko 3 is a free download from the site. Her clothing, on the other hand, cost me money.(links to image)
Light and Ladder (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/ladder.jpg). I was experimenting with a new scene I downloaded. Again, the girl, clothing, and scenery are all downloaded, I only lit and posed the scene.(links to image)
Girl with Sword (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/swordgirl.jpg). Possibly NSFW. Nothing shows, but only because it's not actually there. Everything here is downloaded, I only lit and posed it.(links to image)
Trinary Planet (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/trinary.jpg). Rendered in Terragen 2.(links to image)
Gliderboard and Girl with Sword are available in widescreen format, upon request.
3D animation
Here's an animation (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/Walking_Small.gif). I use it as an avatar on some other boards. Everything is downloaded, but I did the posing and animations. And the floor is a primitive in the program.(links to image)
Other stuff
Imagination Cubed (http://www.imaginationcubed.com/LaunchPage)(something by GE, which I had nothing to do with, but it's cool.)
I simply love that character design. Facial markings are bomb.
facial markings? what?
*checks*
oh, no, that was a rendering artifact from the template. That's her cheek.
Well then, she sucks.
No other redeeming values whatsoever. *nodnod*
well it looks good, maybe give her that marking for the effect.
i like the clothes, they're interesting and its cute how the belly pokes out
I'm not sure face markings would show up in her human form, given she's got dark skin. I am toying with possibly putting a crescent moon marking on her back when she's in wolf form, though.
I found this (http://www.imaginationcubed.com/LaunchPage) page. It's kindof like Artpad, kindof like a drawing/chat room.
neat

If she's got markings, they'll be there. Likely result is that, with dark skin, they'll show up as light on dark, rather than dark on light...
You see, I thought of that, but simply couldn't put it into words.
After all, llearch is far more eloquent than I.
I is?
Wow. Thanks, Sienna. ;-]

I'm amused that so many people voted "Potato."
Think I'll make a new poll.

Then you have never been to starcraft.org. They've always got a poll up, and almost always, have a joke option at the end. Depending on how good it is, a sizable number of people ususally vote for it.
never said I was surprised, just amused.
Well, since there's a unanimous vote that everyone wants to see the animations, I'm just going to change the poll back to something filler.
Yes, I was taking "potato" to be a "yes" vote.
The animations in question are actually homework for my Games design class, anyway, but it's the first time I've tried to do non-CG animations in like...ever...
I've got something else to throw out there later, though. Probably tonight or tomorrow.
yey fer pink!

I voted grey. Neutral colour, looks good on pretty much anything.
The file extensions in the URL on 'Light and Ladder' and 'Girl With Sword' are missing. Also, I'm confused, which of those did you model yourself and which did you download?
the girl in all of the 3D images is downloaded, as is all her clothing, and the sewer scenery in "Ladder." When I actually model something, I tend to be very proud of my work, and take credit for it.(I have an in-progress human model, but it's very far from complete, so I'm not showing it.)
I'll fix the extensions, they're supposed to be .jpg
Also, I actually caught you "Voting in thread 'Raist thinks he's an artist'" when you voted, so I knew the gray had to be you. :)
You -may- wish to identify what in the first post is new content, when you edit it...
Just a small suggestion, is all. ;-]

A perfectly understandable supposition. It is after all my second-most favourite colour, and there is virtually no pink to be found in my avatar of choice at the moment.
Now then;
I rather like Crimson Skies as well as Trinary Planet. Gliderboard is cool and the lighting on Girl with sword seems fairly awesome. I'm not really one with a good eye, so I suppose I can really be of no help. I'm using a laptop right now so when I lean back the effect is really awesome, as though she's being lit-up by a fire. I'm not sure if you actually clothed the girl, but those leather straps seem too firm fitting. They should lift up off the skin a bit as the strap goes from her chest to the abdomin.

That was, in fact, the idea. Orange point light with shadows set to maximum softness.(this will make no sense if you're not a CG person. Hazmat, I know you understand what I'm talking about.)
QuoteI'm not sure if you actually clothed the girl, but those leather straps seem too firm fitting. They should lift up off the skin a bit as the strap goes from her chest to the abdomin.
No, as with nearly everything where there's a person involved, the outfit was a download, and what's worse, in this case, there's a shirt that goes over the suspenders which I got rid of.(which the straps were intended to hide under, hence the form fittingness) Honestly, everyone who looks at that one says the same thing. Perhaps it's because I had a better look at the models, but what I first notice is that her nipples should actually be an inch outside the straps, instead of being hidden by them as the image would seem to indicate.
Hence why I labeled that one NSFW.
In other news, new stuff up top, and a new poll. Black won the old one, with 3 votes. Pink actually did as well as Red, with 2 votes, and for some reason, Blue only got 1 vote.
Well that's just because you left the poll up for too short a time.
Yes, the straps obviously don't cover, I just didn't feel the need to make mention.
Well, both are attractive, although B is more 'sisterly' Version A would only work with younger children, with one hiding behind the other.
Voted B for pretty much the same reasons Sienna mentioned.
I'd comment on your 3D stuff, but I haven't the slightest clue how to go about animating, I just model.

Seen much Chobits art? That was a part of the inspiration.
I should mention. The girls are elvish, hence the extremely thin bodies and slender limbs. My human girls are a bit more... substantial... than that.

It's easier than you might think. The hard part is getting the model boned and rigged, which is why I can't take credit for the girl who keeps showing up.
Daz studio is a free, Poser-like program, and there are a lot of freebies on the site for you to download. The only thing from there I've actually paid money on so far is the outfit she's wearing in Ladder and Gliderboard, which cost around $10, and was well worth it.(I've used it in nearly every scene since.)
[edit]Additional notice!
If the results are "I like both" or if A and B are closely tied, then I will finish both. Just wanted to know what people want to see more.[/edit]
:U
You should!
I'll stick to modeling, thanks. ;)
Also, I'm confused as to why you have an option for one, the other, or both. If you're willing to do both, why not just do both and skip the poll?
why not?
Good question. :I
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this earlier; the reflections in the water in 'Trinary Planet' look more like static than waves.
you're more than a little bit right.
I really don't want to go back to play with TG2 and try to fix that, it's a bit of a headache. maybe I should just replace it with the version without water. I kinda like how that one looks better, anyway.
You could try blurring it in Phothoshop or something.
so I guess that since "do both" is winning, anyway, and everyone wants to see both, nobody else is likely to vote, unless they desperately do not want to see one.
Well too bad, I have a comic I need to do, first!(hah!)
Well good for you!

I'm working on things, really!
I'm going to call the poll closed, now. Tie, Type B and Both at 2 votes each. Personally, I change my vote to Both, for a win there.
It could be a while before you see anything from it, though, because I have to do those animations.
ooh... so many arcane choices... I'm not sure which to choose!
if it makes it any easier, here's how the system I used works.
Earth beats Air, which beats Water, which beats Fire, which beats Ice, which beats Earth. These are Arcane Elements.
Arcane beats Light beats Dark beats Arcane. These are the divine alignments.
for the Arcane, if you choose an element, you also get the two on either side of it. That is...
Fire->Earth and Air
Air->Fire and Ice(this is me, actually, but I like fire more)
Ice->Air and Water
Water->Ice and Earth
Earth->Water and Fire
I may have to stop adding "Potato" to my polls, it's stealing all the answers.
That's really interesting. Personally I'm not sure if I would be water or air, as both are cool. I considered Ice, but I wasn't sure if you used that division
-thing. Also, I'm not sure I want to choose Ice, because I also like to garden. A tricky one...
I know I wouldn't be air though.
So I guess I'll choose water, which has ice, which includes air in a distant way. In this way, one could consider that everyone is every element, just that certain one
s are stronger. Although it probably works that way anyways.

I used to think that after taking an online quiz called "which type of mage are you?" in which every answer applied to me, enough so that they almost could have been chosen randomly.(I tended to get "Time" as a result.)
I changed my mind when I got a good look at the results for a "Harry Potter Sorting Hat" quiz. Nearly all of the other posters on the board had a clear slope: one house they strongly belonged in, two houses which were evenly in the middle, and one house where they clearly would not belong.
I tripped the "default" answer by getting the most balanced answer possible(13 all, except 12 for Slytherin. Stuck me in Griffyndor.), indicating that perhaps it wasn't intentional that everything seems to apply to me.
Perhaps you're the same way.
Animation is hard!
I mean, 3D animation is OK, because you know that every frame is going to be computer-drawn, and you can look at the animation and tweak it without having to re-draw it every time, but 2D animation's another beast, entirely. Adding in-between frames isn't as easy as telling the computer I want to run at 30 frames per second, instead of 15. I've gotta go in and draw them!
The "standing" animation only looks as good as it does because I got to select and move most of it. His pectoral muscles(they look like moobs to me...) are all twitchy because I got the bright idea that his ribs should expand and contract as he breathes.
Maybe if I shift the head a bit, it'll work.
(the image I'm talking about is "standing.gif", in the first post. Currently posted as an image, not a link.)
Cool. Now I'm curious about the game engine. The last platformer I made was for DOS, and would run quite nicely on a 286. In protected-mode, no less, which conventional wisdom said was impossible. Sadly I can't claim that particular feat for my own. The underlying graphics library was written from scratch and proved faster than several commercially available libraries.
Are you using SDL or Allegro, or straight to the OS libraries? Come to that, which platforms does it run on?
The entire class is using Microsoft XNA Game Studio Express. It'll run on pretty much anything running Win XP, Vista, or the Xbox 360's Dashboard system.
Certain other restrictions are in place, which are influencing the nature of the product. Also, I calculate I'll need about 3x as many frames as I'm budgeted for. Fortunately, I may be able to offload about 20% of the work on someone else.

As someone who's seen so many technologies and libraries die - especially Microsoft ones - I really don't know what to say to that. Still, good luck with the project.
Eh, it's for a grade, not for cash. After the class is done, I'd kinda like to take everything and port it over to a different engine and make a "real" game out of it.
Made a newer version of the animation. Now with an extra frame!(wasn't as hard, this time.)

*giggly giggly* you may be right. I'll show my other team members and ask what they think before changing it, though.
I should draw a walking animation before the end of the day.
I like the way the shoulders look in the first better then in the second, but the chest moves better in the second then in the first.

That's one reason I like 3D better myself, though it does have its share of problems too. Such as having the program go all stupid on you and mess up an animation. Which makes you have to go back and fix the error not knowing what caused it half the time.
Let's just say it can be pretty frustrating to have a guy driving a car with his hands on the steering wheel, only to find out later after you've rendered it that the program has decided the guy should have both his hands hanging out the window.
As for 2D one thing that helps is to have a dope sheet. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dope_sheet_%28animation%29)
One book I can suggest if your thinking of doing more animations is "The Animator's Survival Kit" By Richard Williams.
thankee, Shadrok, I'll keep an eye out for it.
I've never had a problem with the computer second-guessing me, but then, I've worked with some pretty "dumb" animation programs. It's definitely easier to splat a character out onto paper than it is to model, texture, and rig one, though.
okay... don't get upset, but... I like the first one better. Where it looks like he's breathing. The second looks like he's flexing, but then the upper arm there balloons out too much, just at the last bit.
I like the third as well. Well... I suppose it does look a little out of sync. Around the area of the lower muscle of the upper arm and the head's up and down movement.
The first one still looks the best, in my opinion. The third one still has the Anchor Arms thing goin' on.

why would I get upset? It's not like I'm baring my soul to you in the form of art.
oh wait...
Seriously, though, why would I get upset? I want the animations to look as good as possible.
I see what you and Hazmat are talking about, though. Fortunately, the Anchor Arms thing should only be a problem for that one animation.
or if he enters an anchor-throwing competition with a certain space-suit-clad Texan squirrel.
It's just that... you changed the image twice, when all along the first could more than just suffice.
eh, I'll look into it later. Walking animation, now! whee!
really, though, re-drawing doesn't bother me much right now. I got assigned as the lead artist of our 3-man team because I like doing this kind of stuff.
And I'm the only one on said 3-man team who actually can draw.(the others will help with coloring later on.)
I'll look into it. A lot of my justifications for the "He looks really over-muscled" complaints have been that he's a special-forces guy, and early in the game, he's taking out armed and armored grunts with his bare hands.
Think I'll call him "SF Guy" until we come up with a better name.
In any case, it'll be easier to think about what to do after I've done the walking, running, and pushing animations, which I need to have ready for our next demo.
UPDATE which I don't think really belongs in the first post.

SF Guy is convulsing!!!
Newest revision. I kinda like it.
Still like the first one the most. :/
OK, so I decided to toss the standing animation on the back burner for a while. Here's the first draft of SF Guy's walking animation.
Yes, it's been a while. My team probably isn't too happy with the delay, either.
Comments, criticism, all welcome. Yes, I know it looks a bit odd.
The head's going to be smoothed out a bit. I know, his skull is doing something funny. I'll fix it. I also know the jump from "facing forward" to "facing backward" is a bit awkward. Again, I'll fix it, though in this case, it won't be as intuitive.
The important part is, I've got a walking animation for my team's demo next week, now. Now, I just need to do a pushing animation, and draw a finalized Standing animation, and it'll be all set. Anything I do after that's gravy!
The face is turning a bit much, I think.
Face and shoulders, perhaps. As it's currently set up, it looks like he's not walking on a single line, but overlapping his steps. Watch when you walk, your feet tend to land on either side of a line - take, say, a painted line in a carpark - it's about 3-4 inches wide, and when you walk, your feet tend to stay that far apart. So as you walk, the inside of your right foot lands about 3-4 inches to the right of the inside of your left foot.
If you're walking on a line, your heel and toe are in line. That's uncomfortable, and forces your shoulders to swing back and forth to balance it.
The way that your char is walking, he's putting his -right- foot on the -left- of the line, then putting his -left- foot on the -right- of the same line.
Or, at least, so it looks to me.
Yeah. So I drew this partly as practice, partly as an example, and stuck it in another artist's thread, which has now been closed, and is being mined for minerals.(We need more Vespene gas!)
However, I decided since it didn't completely suck, I'd toss it in here, too.
Fox and Wolf (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/compare.gif)(link, 'cause it's a larger image, and I don't want to clutter my thread up with big images.)
Apparently, either nobody cares what Raist does in his thread anymore, or I made a completely uninteresting poll. Humn, I'd thought at least Techmaster-Glitch would vote, since it was inspired by one of his favorite games.
Ah well.
I've got other stuff on my machine at home, I'll put it up when I get to it. SF Guy is taking a break, but I still need to make Jumping and Pushing animations before tomorrow. Then, I'll finish the Standing, and redraw the Walking. Or maybe I'll redraw the walking, and then draw Pushing. Anyway, time for a new nonsense-poll.

It's good. It's like Ratchet and clank, with robots and somewhat less character development, but the whole "it's ROBOTS!" feel is pretty cool. Glitch really needs to talk more.
Yes, he does. The one thing that I was most disappointed in that game was that they constantly hinted that Glitch was a Morbot, but never actually
did anything with it, other than those "Morbot Artifact" powerups.
In the level where they bring Dr. Exavolt back to the Command Center, and he turns out betraying them, this is what I imagined happening:
First, Glitch actually
shoots the bastard, instead of letting him vanish inexplicably into thin air between screenshots, his optic lights turn from blue to red, a small explosion, and Glitch is suddenly a 20-ton walking deathmachine on a vengeful rampage.
That's how I would have done it :giggle
Oh yeah, I forgot to comment on your arts. xD
To b honest, the wolf looks more like a fox, and the fox looks more like... Dunno. Though it does remind me of Renamon. :/
You're right! Renamon is totally the vibe I was getting from it!
Yeah, that's how I would draw wolves too... and sorry about not visiting your thread, I was just daunted by unknown reasons and forces about actually reading through whatever you might have posted, and at those times I didn't really feel up to posting anything of real value on your pictures, figuring I'ld look at them later when my posting could actually be of use.
I find your walking hilarious, and the second standing seems pretty good, you've hammered out lots of the crazyness. Hyperventilating one is interesting.
Oh look... I just read through your first post in the thread and it really is supposed to look like Renamon. Interesting...
And as always, PICTURES!!! Referrences help you to learn and grow. Use them.

Oh, so it seems. Well then, I now know to check the first page for every update. :)
Sienna: no worries. I think last couple of weeks were just slow for everybody. And you have to excercise your ninja skills to post, anyway.
Hazmat: yeah, I'm putting new info in the first post, and linking to the post where the image is, now, just like everybody else does. Couple of extra clicks, but it's got some important advantages, such as helping focus the discussion, and keeping all of the image links in a single, convenient location.
Anyway, yes, since Remanon was the only anthro cartoon fox I've really seen who I thought looked decent, I blatantly stole the style they used to draw her. It was only after I had a fox cross my path on the way from school back to my car that I realized just how close the design actually is! Foxes have very triangular faces.
In any case, that's the last furry picture you'll see out of me for some time, as I'd like to practice on my own for a while, and they aren't showing up in my comic yet. Not counting OOC strips.
True...
:U GASP!!! How did you know about that?!?!
(Okay, seriously? Where'd you go and get an idea like that from?)
You've mentioned it before. And I've resorted to the same thing, at times.
Perhaps so, but we all know that I would fail as one in any case. Oh yeah, and, "Oh look! An obvious distraction Eagle!"
nobody's posted here for at least 14 days, but I understand I get a bit of leeway, since it's my art thread, so...
*necromancy*
Yeah. So. Thread's been empty for a while. I haven't drawn anything for a while.
So I drew something, to stay in-practice. Thinking I may take it to finish, but we've all seen how well I finish drawings.
Blatant ego-trip! (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/kvolfram.jpg)
One or two of you have probably seen my webcomic. Well, that's the guy we're following right now, except in the comic, he's currently 14, and in this sketch, he's 17. Yes, he's also me.(in a kinda-sorta way.)
Not sure about the face.
Or the far hand.
Sorry... I kind of do that to threads. Kill them I mean.
Yeah, I understand that about the kind-of sort-of, quite a bit in fact... Anywho, I like the picture, but I agree that something is weird about it. I don't know what to tell you to do about it though. I think it might be because you have a realistic-type head structure, and semi-realistic other things, but the facial features just don't seem to match up. I'm thinking that they're not quite realistic enough. On a second look though... the right eye has a strange angle in proportion to the face. It is too high.
let me go make a sketch.
Oh my gosh, done. Isn't it magical? You can tell I spent a lot of time and effort on it. and love, don't forget love.
*laughing* hope that helps at least a little.
You didn't kill my thread, I did! By not posting anything!
On to bigger and better things, I think you're a little right, but not quite as much as that line. I think I'm going to soften the expression a bit, so that instead of scowling, he's just kinda smirking. More natural expression.
I think his left eyebrow being a considerable amount bushier may have something to do with making his left eye look higher than his right. Also, you could try moving his mouth to his right a bit; right now it looks like it's on the side of his face.
oh I don't know, I kind of like the expression the way it is, it kind of seems to suit him, like a serious kind of guy.
I still think I'm right about that right eye though, the angle, not so much as the placement, gives it a sort of two-dimensional feel. If you keep the eye where it is, but just change that angle, I honestly think it will help.
Back at his old tricks, Raist is. Necromancing his thread again, Raist is.
Yeah, so anyway, I've been tweaking an older model again.
Boobs (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/modelF.jpg) and butts (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/modelB.jpg). (Safe for all but the strictest work)
I think I've done more in 3D than I have in 2D.
Also, her bum looks more square than I'd like.
Very good, raist, and remember, Necromancy should be left to professionals!
Did you poly that from scratch>
Professional Necromancer, that's me. 8)
100% scratch. It started as a cube.
Ugh, box-modeling. You have my praise, good sir.
Holy tube-inflated tent! from a cube!? can you give us a time scale?
think this one's been about 8 months, but I've rebuilt most of it twice.
Let's say about 3 months, averaging an hour a day?
sweet! I could use some nude, except not models like these!
Do you mind if I use these Raist? *kittens*
I might mind if I'm being used as a nude model. Can I wear swim trunks?
*sigh* Well I guess so...
(but seriously, can I use them for references, you know, since I won't get (too many) weird looks with manquin-looking figures like these?)
go ahead, though there are bound to be better references out there.
Actually, on the topic of reference material, I could use a reference. Considering asking a friend if she wouldn't mind.
XD
But, does she have the body-type you require?
yes, actually. That's why I'm considering asking.
I think she's about as close to 'ideal' as I'm going to find.
maybe she'll pose in bathing suit? :B
I dun' think her boyfriend would be too happy at that.
Really, though, tight-fitting clothing is quite sufficient.
meh
S'all good.
Best of luck with that endevour.
And update again.
I see no reason to update the entire thread just for this.
Arms and Legs (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/modelF2.jpg)
You making a mannequin, or what?
I just haven't attached the arms or legs yet.
They're ripped from an earlier model.
Are you using mesh smooth for rendering, or is the model you're working on that smooth?
what you see has been smoothed twice. It looks kinda ugly at base-resolution(I actually work in what's called "proxy mode," where it looks smoothed once, but behaves at base resolution), and I figured if I'm smoothing it once, then why not go for a second time, and make it look really smooth.
Also, the screenshots are reduced to 80% of original size, resulting in "fake" anti-aliasing, and I have a virtual mirror going on during modeling, which I freeze for rendering, because otherwise it causes an artifact running down the middle of the model.
In short, I'm working in 204 quads, and you're seeing well over 6000 quads.
I kind of wish I knew what was going on :B
Seems cool anyways.
Necromancy needed, eh?
I assume it's still OK. I've only fallen to the middle of the second page.
Anyway, those of you who visit the IRC channel have noticed someone show up occasionally by the moniker of "Tiffany." Well, Ink asked what she looks like, so I decided to answer pictographically.
I need drawing practice... (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/Tiffany.jpg)
bleh. She needs a new hairstyle.
And I need tablet practice. Maybe the Secret Santa will help with that.
practice? yes, but thats pretty darned good lines there
it looks the same as it did 3 years ago. That's not improvement! :<
Ink drew me! *glee!* (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/doctor_bikiniredwolf.jpg)
Yes, as a wolf-chick. This probably makes more sense if you've been to the place-which-shall-not-be-named.
So I just had to color it (http://www.landrymanor.com/ragefactor/images/doctor_bikiniredwolfCOLOR2.jpg)
Thanks, Ink, I love it.

Actually, it doesn't. That said, I seem to recall Ink has from time to time decided to draw female versions of people's male characters so it wouldn't surprise me too much.
Nice colouring job, by the way!

Which place? The EGS forums?
The IRC chat room. It's dissociated from the message board for various reasons, so those of us who visit it refer to it as "The place which shall not be named."
Fair enough.
I was thinking of EGS Mayhem, where suddenly changing gender and/or species is pretty much par for the course.
