Title: Website help requested (done... for now)
Post by: James StarRunner on August 09, 2007, 06:21:28 AM
I'm in the process of trying to revamp my site. One of the many things I want to do is change this:

Only thing is... How do I? I can't find out how...

I think it's this:

Thanks Tape. Hopefully I can figure it out from here. I'll give an update when I do (or don't I guess...)

Yeah, let us know.

I've been meaning to add one myself, but basically there is no logo I can think of which can adequately represent my site in a 16x16 icon using the EGA colour set  :rolleyes

Oh yeah! Thanks Tape!

edit: doesn't seem to work for explorer, but I'll look into it.

Works just fine in Firefox.

Works in Firefox here, and in Opera 8.5.  But you're right, it doesn't work in IE.

Yep, just doesn't seem to want to work for Internet Explorer. (And I really can't tell if it works for anything else... except for Opera since Tape said it before I posted this. :P )

Perhaps it's a stupid question, but can it be put in a CSS though? I'd hate to have to add it to every page manually.

James, what you've used is a JPEG file instead of a Windows 3 icon.  Have you tried doing that instead?  Is IE balking because it's not actually a valid .ico file?

I don't seem to have a program that saves things as .ico
Perhaps I could try a png or gif and see if that works better...

GIMP does.  Try this one:

I'll check your site on Safari and Konqueror when I get home.

Unfortunately, it still doesn't work in IE. I'm thinking it may require slightly different code...

James, as it stands, it only seems to work after you've bookmarked it in IE.

**EDIT**
This is IE 6, by the way.

Ok, it must just be my version that doesn't do that once bookmarked. Odd... since I got the latest version as of last week...

According to w3schools, the bookmark thing does seem to be the case for some browsers (Though this forum still has the favicon even without favoriting it). Well, as odd as it might be for some browsers I guess it more or less works.

Ultimately, if it doesn't show up for some people, as far as they're concerned it's no different to how it was before, so they won't know they're missing anything :P

Heheh... yep, so I'll just leave it at that. Now time to butcher the rest of my site... after I get some much needed nourishment and sleep.

It tested OK on Safari.  I haven't been able to try Konqueror yet.

**EDIT**
Yep, it's just IE that's being a problem.

Just one more reason to ditch Internet Explorer.
