Title: First "screamer" ad ever?
Post by: Aridas on February 15, 2007, 04:01:23 PM
I was busy doing TEH ILLEGULZ when I saw this ad... (but before I actually link to my imageshack save of it, I'm going to fill you in.)

Basically, it's very attention getting... and every time you hover the mouse over it (IE7 users MAY have to click it to activate interaction with it on that level) it makes a loud, annoying sound. Now that you know what it is, here it is.

http://img48.imageshack.us/my.php?image=c4e16bcd7b60f35b3e587f5xp5.swf

(note that the flashing white area is the true area of the banner ad, and you shouldn't be able to see what's outside that flashing rectangle)

Where does this lead? Here. (http://cafegiftcard4free.net/?config=2021&src=WC-136811aaa:109815:) PLEASE do not fill anything in, because you should already know how much BS a lot of these places are...

My conclusion? Assuming the site wasn't set up for the express purpose of this misleading banner, someone made that banner and chose to use that site to represent it after paying for advertising. A double prank, I suppose. Scaring someone with the hover noise and then giving you something else that was also completely unexpected.

There's these ads about smiley emoticons that will make a noise if you accidently mouse over them.  Cause nothing makes you want to click something like loud noises and flashing lights. :3

(Spends the next two hours trying to click a police siren)

The only thing that ad makes me want to click is the close button. :<

Seriously, an ad might be the first thing that introduce you to a service. Some ads are just attention grabbing without caring what type of impression they give potential costumers. We usually refere to these ads as "frauds".

Anyone ever have the misfortune to come across the ad with the mosquito buzzing? By far the worst one I've ever seen.

Oh, yeah I see that all the time at lyrics.com.  It just keeps buzzing and buzzing and buzzing and buzzing. :<

I guess i'm glad I don't go to that site... Never heard it. But the worst ads are the ones that make no sound at all. (for example... every screensavers.com ad. Doubly so if it mentions spongebob in any way)

Gah, those things are so annoying...usually you see the smiley ones on Newgrounds.  :rolleyes

And for the record, I also hate screamers with a passion. :sweatdrop  I looked up a list of all of them on Wikipedia so that I could never be fooled.  Of course there's the homemade ones on YouTube...

Bleh, I hate that mosquito ad. I'll be listening to music loudly in my headphones and that crap will come on and it's just like "AHHH! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!". Frustrating. I usually kill all flash in non-flash based websites, but sometimes you can't avoid them.

I am reminded of something i encountered years ago when i was in a tech school computer lab- someone near me made the mistake of finding what i call a 'link trap'. some dick he was talking to sent him a ling so he of course clicked to see what his buddy wanted to show him.

immediately his computer started screaming "HEY EVERYBODY! IM LOOKING AT GAY PORN!"  had a blurry flashy pixelated SOMETHIGN which may look like a partially downloaded naked man from a distance, and somehow locked the back button on his webbrowser from working. it took him less then four seconds to close the window but everyone was looking at him. sinse we were all adults we (including the instructor, a man so jacked up on coffee that he once used a CNC mill to sharpen a pencil) asked him to send us the link and we all busted out laughing.

the thing to know about this is that in this tech school many of the classrooms have large windows in the back of the class so that people in the hall can see what a class is doing. because of this we normally have a few computers that are not in use displaying the most horibly complex projects weve ever worked on even if were just putzing with an easy one. i thank just about any diety in existance that nobody happened to walk past.

I'm not a big fan of the screamer-scare ads myself.  It tends to ruin my mood for a few hours. Not because I'm overly upset at the person who sent it, or I didn't appreciate the humour...for some reason I get into a funk after seeing them.  Maybe its adrenaline withdrawel...

The ones I find annnoying are the "browser hijack" ones, that take over your browser and make it look like some kind of system error message, then make it appear to be a popup offering to scan your system for errors.

The ones that annoy me are the ones that resize my browser. Not least, I'm running dual screen, and large, and I have four browsers on the screen at any one time. Resizing to cover all of those is just annoying....

Admittedly that's websites, not adverts, but hey, I added a chunk to my hosts file to send most of the adverts to 127.0.0.1 ...
