Title: Drakes Drawings
Post by: Drake Manaweilder on December 26, 2006, 12:26:34 AM
Some of you may of heard me mention that I draw a bit, and I got a webcam a few weeks ago so I thought I'd start my own thread. I record it with my webcam then use Windows movie maker to take a picture then just upload it to Photobucket. ( I can't WAIT until i get a scanner )

For the most part I draw in greyscale but I might color them in GIMP sometime.

A drawing I did two days ago. I felt kind of sad for some reason so I decided to draw it. It's two-three times as i really was at the time

This I drew about a week ago during some free time in school.

Older stuff:

What you aren't seeing is me getting mauled by about 30 of the little terrors just a few seconds later.

PS: to the moderators: Do I need to add these to my first post as an index or is it ok?  You know, with it being the second post and all.

Personally I think Drawing 5 is the best even though he looks dead.

As for the colouring in the new one, I'm no expert but I generally use one of the soft brushes to gently chibble away at the edges.. it gets rid of the white specks at the borders of the floodfill.
For Gareeku I inked the sketch digitally so I redrew the outlines anyway which helped.

Soft brushes? Do you mean the "fuzzy" brushes? I'll try it, thanks.

I've only got the brushes that originally came with it, so i may not have the same things you've got. (assuming you can make/download new brushes)

Also, I've heard that you are looking for drawings of Jakob, want one?

Yes.  Remember, you've got two brush tools - pencil (N), which does a very hard brush, and the paintbrush thing (P) which does fuzzy brush strokes.  In addition to that you've got the selection of brushes which has a set of circles and a set of fuzzy circles as well.

If you use the fuzzy paint tool with a fuzzy circle brush you can gently clean away the ragged edges as long as you're careful not to erase too much of the outline.

You can indeed create new ones, and I presume there are online collections of them, but I don't know where.  Generally I just create circles of different sizes for various uses, such as very large ones and a few in between the default sizes.

QuoteAlso, I've heard that you are looking for drawings of Jakob, want one?
Certainly, if you want to give it a try.

That's why I usually go over the lines again to make sure they are even. At school, I scan drawings in at lunch, then, when nobody is looking during Communications class, I color them. I'll have to upload those when I get back.

Yes, that's better.  There's a lot of JPEG noise though - did you just go with the default settings or something?  The default setting is 2:2:1 or something.. change it to 1:1:1 and most of the colour bleeding will go away.  It's a good idea to use the 'show preview in window' option as well since it lets you play with the compression levels to see what would happen, and allows you to balance quality vs size.

Just to make sure, are you editing this from an XCF or PNG master copy which you save as a JPEG for publishing, or are you reloading the JPEG each time you modify it (because that's bad)

Windows movie maker automatically changes "pictures" taken from movie clips as .jpg files, and I haven't figured out how to change that. erm... How do you change the thing to 1:1:1?

It's the 'subsampling' option in the 'Save as JPEG' dialog, and it was actually 1x1x1 not 1:1:1.
You'll probably want to set the DCT method to 'floating point', just like I didn't.  (I wish I knew why it defaults to the most rotten image quality)
Anyway, this is a screenshot of mine.  Yours may be different since you're probably on Windows, but on mine you twist the 'Advanced' arrow thingy to pop up all the extra options:

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k216/tapewolf/scraps/save_as_jpeg1.png

It doesn't matter if the original source was a JPEG, just as long as you save it as something else while you're editing.  Each time you save it as a JPEG you'll get a certain amount of quality loss, so it's something you want to put off until the end, and keep a non-JPEG copy floating around in case you want to re-edit it later.

Right, Thank you. I'll remember that.
It's exactly the same on my end.

And my guess as to why it defaults to the worst quality: to save space. Kind of like the difference between sprites and 3D models.

Save as .jpg too often and it get's kinda blurry.

Update with school stuff while I finish up Tapewolfs drawing:
January 12th
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n132/Drake-Manaweilder/DrakeKeycopy.jpg
Colored version of "drawing two" done during school using Photoshop.
Also, if anybody is wondering how I did the orb effect, I used the airbrush tool and the "fade to transparent" option. This can be done with the GIMP and probably other programs as well.

http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n132/Drake-Manaweilder/wolfsword.gif
Among one of my first anthro drawings, and the first drawing I did of my character.

EDIT:
Finally finished Jakob for Tapewolf! :boogie

Sorry for the lack of updates, my webcam has been going nuts lately and I havent had enough time at school to scan anything. I did manage to get my webcam to work last night, and I drew my first Chibi drawing a few days ago:

Just experamenting with Drakes design, some shiny brushes and layers. I defenately learned a few things from this, like don't merge down the layers, then figure you can modify it easally afterwards. :sweatdrop
This one started out as a photo of me doing the same pose in the same clothing. I had to do alot of modifacations from the photo in order for it to look right, I had to modify the right arm a heck of a lot, In the photo it looked fine, but when I outlined it, it looked like it was a foot shorter than the other, so I had to fight with it for an hour or so.

3-4 hours, done using my Webcam, Windows movie maker, and the GIMP.

I like the gradient between the arm and the wrist.  The eyes are kind of creepy, though, and the arms are disproportionately thin compared to the legs.  What's with the red tips in the hair?

I quite like the eyes. The nose on the other hand...
I'l play around with the arms a bit, and see if I can get them right.

"the rules and lines"? could you explain?

As for the color, (assuming I'm not misinterprating this) Drake is an angel, meaning he will have bright colored markings. I've just had him use a patch untill this one, so I'm still figuring them out.
