Title: New danger: 1337sp33k
Post by: superluser on December 03, 2006, 11:28:15 PM
Oh, noes!  It's B1FF (http://www.destructoid.com/local-news-pwns-1337-kids-parentz-rofl--28287.phtml)!

News report on the evil hacker slang used by ``advanced computer users''

Has this been posted yet?  It just came out on Kotaku, but apparently the clip is seven months old.

OH NOEZ WE'RE DOOMED

News people can make a big deal out of anything.

Oh, and I also noticed they mixed in acronyms with teh leet, which makes no sense to me, as 1337 is infinitely easier to understand than acronyms, since.. you know... 1337 spells things out. Common sense is all you need there. But acronyms used on the phone and internet, while shown on the screen in that news clip, never actually came up in the spoken part, and those are the things you can't just figure out right away.

It's still stupid that something that's used to speed up conversations is being called "code" and "dangerous"

A few acronyms for parents in the dark:

GYPO: Grate Your Parmesan Online
NIFOC: Noodle Incident Fault Of Calvin
AP: Apple Pie
URL (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Ac17HHGiA): Y0UN1F3RM R33Z0RZ3 L0KAT3R, a high-tech, obscure method for sending porn.
POS: Parents Over Shoulder.  Example: ``Unlimited technology from the whole universe, and we cruise 'round in a Ford POS''

Top hole. Bally Jerry pranged his kite right in the how's your father. Hairy blighter, dicky-birdied, feathered back on his Sammy, took a waspy, flipped over on his Betty Harper's and caught his can in the Bertie.

You noticed? :B

I like to create easy to remember passwords with 1337 with lots of strange characters in them.
Very useful! :3

I know my parents didn't. But I did, a few times. And I created a language and a few written and spoken codes when I was a child.

I use encrypted writing or speech for some stuff, but 1337 is just uninspired.

My parents tried to speak in obscurities. Spelling words, speaking pig-latin, that sort of thing. The problem with it is that us kids picked it up faster than Mum ever did... :-)+)

One of my fonder memories was Dad trying to speak to Mum, and the kid who he was talking about breaking in to explain it to Mum for him... *giggle*

That's either brilliant satire, or horrendous journalism.

How can I become a "Cyber-Detective", by the way? That sounds cool.

It looks better in console style fonts.  I can't remember the exact one, but there's one where the | is longer and the o is a littler higher up. Looks spot on there.

In teletype:
$0|\/|3+1|\/|3$ 1+ _||_|$+ |-|4|0|03|\|$ |_1|<3 +|-|4+ |\/|¥ |=|213|\||).

In Verdana:
$0|\/|3+1|\/|3$ 1+ _||_|$+ |-|4|0|03|\|$ |_1|<3 +|-|4+ |\/|¥ |=|213|\||).

In Lucinda:
$0|\/|3+1|\/|3$ 1+ _||_|$+ |-|4|0|03|\|$ |_1|<3 +|-|4+ |\/|¥ |=|213|\||).

Hmm. I'm not sure I agree... :-)

The correct way of spelling a |_33+ p is "|>".
