Ooh, I like the bunny guy(?). Given the Daryil Clan appearance, maybe they'd be better off churning out a few romance novels. Or maybe they did and this was their attempt to do something more meaningful...
Given that Creatures are generally fairly slow to adapt, the Crow Road thing might also apply - the McGuffin in that story was an unfinished novel written on a late 1970s wordprocessor on 8" floppy disks that nothing could easily read by 1992. Given the pace of change there might be a few of the more forward-thinking students similarly left behind.
