Fascinating. I wouldn't want to do it myself, but I can't see too much of a problem with the fuel rods. They're sub-critical, it's not like they're releasing that much radiation, right?

You are correct. Uranium have a pretty long half life of 703.8 million years which means they are not that dangerous. It only emits 13.5 MeV / decaying nucleus.
