Title: 2014/12/26 [PF #348] Holiday Special

... Okay, I have to ask.

If the harvest failed and there's no flour to make bread with...

... Where did the flour for the cake come from?  :paranoid

Imported at great expense.  It's also possible that the cakes were imported in their finished form.

Is this canon? Because that would be awesome.

Yes.  Cross had a tendency towards tyranny and evil, and he liked fear rather more than was good for him.  But at the end of the day, he cared about the plight of his subjects.

One of the things that was interesting about the whole "let them eat cake" thing was the total misunderstanding of the issue by the royalty of the day. The cost of flour for cake (much finer than for bread) was about ten times that of bread flour; the commons were complaining, not of the quality of their food, but of the fact that there really wasn't any at all. :-/

Not having enough bread to eat was kinda critical because a large chunk of their diet was bread, and not much else; jam, meat, salads, whatever were all secondary to basic volume.

All a bit tragic, really.

In the original draft, Merlin drew little Christmas puddings:  http://oekaki.dhscomix.com/stuff/cmas2014-draft.jpg

I figured that they hould be a lot larger and more rich to give them enough calories to survive the winter.

You'd be surprised. Christmas pudding is a very rich mixture, whereas your average birthday cake is pretty bland...

Maybe they're fruitcakes. :.
