Post by: thegayhare on March 27, 2013, 02:39:32 PM
(New updates at the bottom of the thread)

Hey there every bunny.

I know it's been ages since iposted anything here.   And to tell you the truth I have really missed this place.

I'll post a more standard sorry to dissapear and beautiful Goober post later but for now I have something to show you folks

I'm still working on a cyborg bunny costume and wanted to share the hand that's replacing my old clamps

This is a pic of the construction process and items used

Here is the finished internal rig

And finally this is it in use.

I need to adjust the springs and paint it before I fit it to a shell but what do you folks think

I know this isn't much of an update but here is a image of the rough shell I'm working on.  It's only lightly glued into place for now

The hand looks neat. How sturdy is it? Strong enough to pick up items, or is it just for show?

as it stands now it's strong enough to pick up atleast a 16 oz water bottle

I tested the rough shell I cut slots for the claws. I am going to make the face plate next but I think I'll cut an angle from the shell to make a palm

I'm planning on making a chain axe for my cyborg set up

Based on warhammer designs like this

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/official_zpsf05b3298.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/official_zpsf05b3298.jpg.html)

But I'm not sure which design to use what do you folks think?

Post by: llearch n'n'daCorna on April 19, 2013, 12:22:49 PM
The third one is likely to be the easiest to fabricate; the first, I think, would look the best.

The middle one has that flat segment in the middle; it makes it look more blunt and crushy than spiky and choppy, to me; I feel the first one is more aggressive and suitable for an axe.

Just my 2p, tho.

I agree the last one would be simpliest but once I build in the chain belts and motor I can see any design working my pod mate at work agrees with you and likes 1  but on FA they seem to like the middle one

I know this may seem tasteless in light of whats happened in RL and my tital certainly is but this was in the works before that

It's a grenade to go with my cyborg costume

Unpainted. but other wise done
the body is a parmesan container and I used cloropast to make the top a key ring for the pin and a plastic spoon for the spoon

I'm planing on painting the body gray or silver with a black cap and spoon

what do you think ?

No the title doesn't make sense but I'm sick in the head

I painted my grenades (I made two) and also replaced the plastic spoons with some strips pf metal used in hanging files. Its not the same shape but a buddy in the military liked the new look better

I'm thinking of adding some rubberized tubing in the body ridges but I don't know and I might add some sand inside the cases to give them weight But I think they look cool

Thanks Boog   I am having fun making this.  I may have sometihng claw related to post this week but for now I just have some art I commissioned

Lastly this isn't sometihng I commissioneed or made  but it's an image I found I loved it and wanted to us it to make a patch for a jacket but the orriginal pic was too confined  with everything crammed into a perfect box.   I took my limitied art skills and expanded the tenticals letting it spill out over the edge ov the canvas making it feel a bit more organic I think

there has been some slight changed to it since my last post. I shortened the springs, and shaved my claw slots for ease of movement.

In my finished costume I'll be wearing black under armor ro blend the seems a little better.

I'm building my cyborg armor using PVA Foam a techneique I first learned about from IndyMogul

http://youtu.be/vb6CXGortrQ

I made a template using craft paper and applied it to two of the 2 foot square EVA pads.

After cutting I used the heat gun to bend the armor into place.

It's boxy for now, (with my body shape It was necessary) but once I build up the layers it'll look pretty cool

For now the seem down the front looks the most out of place but that will be taken care of as it's built up

Hi all

as part of my cyborg armor I decided I needed a Jump pack. Nothing to allow flight but something sufficient for enhanced jumps. I used a base from an old crt monitor as the central part. the bottoms of 4 sweet tea bottles for the thrusters and a 3/4 gallon water jug for the jump engine

Here its only taped in place. I'm planing on installing a fan under the main engine and red and yellow leds in the bottoms of each thruster and the engine. the bottoms will stay translucent while I paint the other parts to give it the look of a powered piece of equipment

Also I've found that good music for my to work to is Steam Powered Giraffe

something about them just gets me enthused to get more mechanical

I love the music but watching them preform is something amazing

I created a couple new templates for the armor. I traced them out onto another sheet of PVA foam. I then used my new hot knife to cut out the templates. I rounded down the edges with the sander tip on my dremal. I used the heatgun on the piece to curve the plates

I used another rough template on the front, I then cut the template with my hot knife, I also cut the slots cot the face guard into the top piece. I then uses the hear gun to curl the armor so the top layer would fit over the contoured belly armor. I beveled the edges with my dremel tip. Its not done yet I'll use the hot knife to even out the face guard. I'll then patches to cover the gap in the sides of the breastplates. After that I'll be installing under lighting in the face plate and I'm going to install lights in the sides of the contoured belly armor. It'll be set so that you can't see the leds themselves but the light should shine across the armor. I'm thinking reds, for the lights

Almost done combat mask for wearing my armor in non furred situations

made of pieces of EVA foam on a Friday the 13th mask and set of cheap safety goggles

I'll be adding some lights in the eyes, and rounding the edges with a dremel. I'll also be carving the face plate into a skull plate design

I've worked at some of the detail on the battle mask
the red lenses are jut temps for now, I'll be adding permenent red lenses to the mask once they arrive and setting lights behind them.

I'm thinking ot doing the skull part in gray or silver with black for the rest of the mask

As part of my costume I was planning to mod my longshot. I actually had it painted 2 years ago but only got around to putting it together last night

Its a basic mod I removed the butt stock painted the shell gray the bolt is black, and on the opposite side I added a small plastic skull that will move when the bolt is worked. the other bolt cover is also painted black and I removed the bi-pod and attached that bolt to the right side 0of the bipod mount. on the other side I attached a bicycle handle bar as a cross grip for the gun

It's still a functioning blaster too

I have the barrel extender back together and will be photographing it once the add ons are complete. I'm mounting a flashlight and laser sight to it

Here is the barrel extender for my longshort

I cut off the attached pistol, painted it to match the blaster then I mounted the laser in the right eye socket and a LED flashlight in the left before attaching it to the barrel. each light is attached to it's own switch so the laser site can be on with or with out the light.

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/skullblaster_zpseaf8f8d4.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/skullblaster_zpseaf8f8d4.jpg.html)

I think it's just about finished

With the barrel extender and the cross grip, the gun looks alot like a light machine gun. Its a good fit too.

the laser sight isn't accurate it slants down ward but its for the look of the thing

I'm also thinking of putting a knife in the skulls teeth, I might still do that as an alterinitive to the current cross grip

I removed cross grip I had mounted on the gun this way I can use the base like a pulse rifle with out the grip getting in the way. I then attached it to a toy knife. I then rewired the laser and light to the grip. the white button controls the laser, and the red one the flashlight. I then mounted the knife blade to the roof of the skulls mouth.

I think the knife in the teeth look for the cross grip looks pretty cool what about you guys

Well I was working on a wooden sword for a while now. I whittled down then wooden pole and painted it with 2 coats of gray, and topped with a coat of silver.

I then tool a section of pva foam, painted it brown to try and simulate leather. I then used small screws driven through the foam into the plastic bones for the cross piece, the smaller bones are attached with hot glue. I wrapped the handle with white duct tape and attached a small skull with a little length of key chain

While the Orky claws are probably goign to be my official hand I wanted to try a new type of paw

this is the bare bones paw 14 brass hinges with 2 pieces if scrap wood. now so far this build is 15 separate wooden parts each finger section is 2 and 1/2 inches long and the finger tips have been whittled down

so far this one is with out the parts needed to make it open or close and before I add the hardware I will probably add a number of layers of gray latex paint. I'm also thinking of maybe adding a covering to the hand but not sure

thanks guys.

I don't mean sto sound whiny its just with little feed back I had gotten the feeling I was just pestering people with the multiple back to back posts.

It is good to hear you folks like builds

A little up date

no pictures of this stuff but I've started building a shell for the new hand so far it's 3 pieces of dollar store tupaware and bowls.

I also added the brass eyelets.   thats 57 screw in brass eyelets....  my fingers were sore after that.  5 packets of them also from the dollar tree from a picture hanging packet (ill be using the picture wire from that as the control wires.)  I then ran through the eyelets I put on the palm some clear plastic tubing, and hot glued it into place.  once the paint is dry I'll thread the control wires through those tubes and eyelets.   that will give me the muscles to allow me to constrict the fingers

in preperation for the next step,  I've destroyed 14 click button pens....  I'm not sure if I should tell you why just now but you can guess

I've got it drying down stairs now with a coat of paint on the palms.

I'm thinking of appling a thin layer of pva foam across the palm and knuckles as well as across the top of the fingers

Post by: Kirrin_Shadowclaw on July 31, 2013, 04:10:31 AM
Wow, how do you manage to shape the bowls and tupaware and bowls for shells? Or do you need to shape them at all? Besides possibly having to cut a chunk or two out of them to fit them on.
Title: Re: Lend me a hand (Costuming)
Post by: thegayhare on July 31, 2013, 08:14:31 AM
For the most part since I'm buying them for the shell I look for shapes that look good and fit together well.  But I have a hot knife for cutting (a soldering iron with an exacto blade tip) and if I want to shape something I have a heat gun.  But that's hard to do right.  You use it to soften the plastic but if you leave it on onespot to long the plastic will blister and burn.

My current shell is made from a gallon cylinder.   My hand fit inside perfectly.  But I didn't count on the wooden base I had to mount my controls too so that didn't give me enough room to open and close my hand.  So of got a pop corn bucket cut the bottom off and fitted it over the end of the cylinder.  The bowl gives me space to open and close my hand.  I the got a circular container that fit on the top of the pop corn bucket

I used the springs from 14 click pens stretched between the eyelets on the back of the hands, this will pull the fingers back into place, since I couldn't use the wire I used heavy duty fishing line. I tied off one end of the line to the finger tip eyelet and thread it through the eyelets on the bottom of the fingers, and threaded it through the corresponding control tube.

So how it works is you will pull the control wire it'll curl the finger, then when you release the springs will pull it back into place

Thanks I should have some new pics in a day or so,  maybe even an early move mentioned vid

I just finished my control glove.  It's nothing special an old leather gloves with the fingertips cut off and split ring key ring loops sewn to the ends.  I'll show pics once it's mounted to the arm.

I also don't like the pen springs they are too weak making the fingers sag if held palm down.  I have new springs, the same type used on my claws.  I'm gonna cut them to size and fix that too.

And with the two new cans of black spray paint I can start on the shell and pva skins

thanks though I will admit the arm doesn't work quite right.  the springs are too tight I think  but damn it looks cool.   So before I work on the shell I'm going to try and get new springs

I've started working on the axe now.  I posted the designs earlier  you can see the basic pieces gathered here.  I have a chloroplast shell ready as well as 3 plastic rollers  that the chain blade will run over.  you can also see what is going to be the drive wheel (2 bottle tops, covered in the plastic spikes from the neck of the bottles),  I am planning to use the nylon strapping as the base of the chain and the broken ice scraper pole will be the handle for my axe.   now I just need a motor.

thanks Since I'm broke I like to try and work with things I can afford too and well it's alot of fun.

As for your question

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/chainaxe_zpsc8683e57.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/chainaxe_zpsc8683e57.jpg.html)

I finished the belt and teeth for my axe.

the belt is simple nylon straping, and the teeth are foam cushion. I cut a strip of the black foam and then cut that into right angled teeth. I then used clear nylon thread to sew the teeth to the strap. to add some grip and clean up the threads I applied hot glue to the underside of the strapping and used a duct tape covered finger to spread the hot glue across that layer.

It turns well and is a good set. But I think I'm going to cut a new shell for the axe, something to set the strap a little further away from the edge.   See I should have not poked all the holes before I had the teeth and belt ready

I will admit when I was modding my long shot I had thought of doing it Lancer style but desided against it mainly cause I've never played gears of war... but you got me thinking.  I have 3 mavericks   I wonder how a chainsaw bayonet would look on a revolver

Oh, that i'm definitely interested in finding the answer to. I myself think it'd look awesome, especially if the revolver is long barrel model.

Un fortunately I'm not sure I have the stuff on hand for the maverick bayonet right off I don't think I could use the same set up as I am with the axe.  Also which would be a better bayonet chainsaw or buzz saw.

Second do you think a motor with a attached battery that can run 45 minutes strait on a single charge. Would be a good one to use.  I figure as a costume piece I won't have it running all the time and 45 minutes if use should be plenty
Title: Re: Chain Axe: Now with teeth (Costuming)

Depends on how long it takes to charge, really. The optimal way is to consider how to pull the battery and swap it out - if you can design a way of doing that from the start, it makes it easier. Back-end access to the battery pack, and a clip-type connector, perhaps? Charging in place is all well and good, but charging usually generates heat, and you want to dissipate that as much as possible (so the pack lasts for more recharges, and keeps charge better) so being able to remove it is a good plan; however, you want it to be well locked in place when it _is_ in use, as movement will shake it about, and (since a battery pack is a heavy object) it's likely to damage the internals of the costume. And possibly the costumer, if you're unlucky.

Just my 2p, though.

Well with the motor I have,  its a wireless power screwdriver,   it hasn't been used in years so I can scrap it for the motor with no regrets.   unfortunatly the built in baterry pack doesn't have a indicator to let you know when the battery is fully charged.

once I get into the case I should be able to see what the battery is like and how I could possible replace it.   I have a bunch of remote control car batteries.  one is going to be in my head to power the camera rig (tested out to run atleast 8 hours powering camera and lcd screen) one of those might work well if its easy to wire in a conector (my idea is to scrap one or two of the chargers that came with the batteris to a little rewire and the batteries are held firmly in place )

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/sheath_zpscae2eba4.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/sheath_zpscae2eba4.jpg.html)

I was reading a book and the man char had something called an Articulated Sheath.

She was a paladin of a war god in holy armor with a revolver and bastard sword.

The sheath had arms that would extend the hilt to the user when needed, and would grab the sword and sheath it.

now the one the book was described more as a mechanical spider that hunched on her spine since it could grab the sword if it had been dropped, and switch to extending it over the shoulder or under the arm.

It got me thinking about how I would make a mechanical sheath. this is my design its a hard wooden or mettle slot with an open top. the top is fitted with triangular teeth with long pistons at the head fitted with spring triggered clamps. when triggers the teeth would open releasing the sword, and the pistons would push the hilt forward. you could them grab the hilt and lift the blade straight off your back easier then drawing it out. when done you put the cross bar to the spring clamps. this would grip the bar and allow you to simply lower the blade into the sheath, the piston retracts and the teeth swing shut keeping the blade in place

I'm not sure if I can build it but I'm tempted too

Here I have my chainaxe head. I've built up the head using PVA foam. I then placed the skull over the engine mount, next to it is the battery pack mounting.

I'm going to angle the edge of the foam near the edge.

Should I make it symmetrical and add a skull to the other side too? or add some other decoration

Okay this is probably pushing the boundaries of art.... and it isn't much to look at but here

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/coop_zps5f0e09b7.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/coop_zps5f0e09b7.jpg.html)

It isn't much to look at yet simply a 4x7 insulated raised platform,  but this is the base for my mom's new chicken coop.   She wants 4 hens and a rooster (Portuguese hens,  that lay blue or green eggs... very high protein) We also have to of the 4 foot side walls framed up,  one of which will feature a window. but we are at a bit of an impasse as to what to name it.  see its going to be painted gray blue cause thats the paint we have and something else for the trim  and mom wants to have a cute name on it.   I voted for "The Cock House" but while it got a laugh they said no.  but no one else has any idea's

So what do you folks think  anyone have any cute names for our hen house?

My stepdad's a car nut  so I just had a thought to call it the "Coope De Ville"  and give it black trim,  mock up a grille and headlights to one side and puts some wheels next to it...  gonna float that by the folks later.

Well I finished layering the pva foam on the axe head.  I also decided to build an exhaust system on the side opposite of the skull.  I used a electrical work box I had sitting around, 3 small tripod legs, a tiny travel size advil bottle, the bottom of a Arizona ice tea bottle, and the cap of a prescription bottle.
now I wanted to stagger the "Exhaust" ports in a sort of random way.

I also Added a ring from a dollar store Halloween door knocker to the back of the axe head.  this looks kinda cool and lets me hang the axe from it when done.

Now there was a set back.  I had to remove the belt.  It kept getting hung up on the drive wheel teeth so I cut away the chain axe teeth (differntd sets of teef der), stripped off the back and am going to rebuild the belt and try a few other things

nothing is finished I can still move stuff about,  I'm planning on painting most of the manifold black,  the prescription cap gray  and maybe adding my pirate sign... which looks Orky in a bunny way

I've started building a prop plasma gun.

I used a small block of 2x4 for the body, a piece of scrap wood cut at an agle for the pistol grip, I bolted one to the other using strips cute from an aluminum can. I wrapped the handle in duct tape I screwed some chloroplast to the back and bottom and then covered the top and sides in pva foam bolted to the block.

I'll be adding the barrel later, but I wanted your opinion what lights should I use for the plasma, red, blue or green?

I agree with llearch here, i believe red would be good. I just seem to think blue or green might make it seem a little like a covenant weapon from Halo. But, indeed it does depend on how it comes out. Might suggest attempting a small way of making it possible to change between all three colors via a switch or something of the like somehow.
Title: Re: Mark 3 Personal Plasma Caster (Frame work)
Post by: thegayhare on September 21, 2013, 10:17:26 AM
The reason I thought of green was based on Halo,  and blue was cause thats the color for plasma in warhammer 40k and a lot of my suff is warhammer based.

Red cause well read means dangerous.  but I already have red,  I'm gonna have red leds on my armor, and head  so I don't want to over saturate.   ehh I'll finish building it before I decide

course before I decide I should see what leds I have on hand.... I know I have red, yellow and I think I have blue and green but I'm not sure about those

PS don't ask why its a mark 3 I needed a name, and if I can find a good spider to mount on the spark chamber it'll be a mark 3 Widowmaker

An update to my plasma pistol build

Nothing is permanent yet just blocking out the placement

I've added an old prescription bottle to the back, that's where I'll put the batteries for the electronics, on each side of the gun will have a top from a pringles can set into it with 4 or 5 red leds for the spark chamber. I've added a small Tupperware container on the front for the focus chamber, I'm thinking of adding a small fan in there for a sound effect linked to the trigger pull. In the barrel I'm going to hace an orange led that will constantly on with a ring of red leds towards the tip that would flash on with the trigger pull

I'm planning on having some cabling running from the focus chamber and a small box mounted infront of the trigger as well

With the 40k style thats leaking into my weapons and style

I felt I needed a symbol that was more true to form, my old space pirate flag with the bubble helmet was to retro, and since my cyborg head will have a metal lower jaw (in plans long before my Orky infestation) I felt something like this would be more fitting

So I'll be printing this as a decal to use on my armor and weapons along with a few other designs

again not really art but not bad either to have gone from a raised platform in the back yard to an almost finished chicken coop in 3 weeks.

all we need to do now is build the the nesting boxes, put the linolum on the floor and get the wire for the enclosure. and since we arnt getting chickens till the spring all that can wait

Well thinking about Warhammer 40k
I realised there is no chain axe, chain sword equivalent to a warhammer, sure there are thunder hammers and power weapons but no motorized heavy hammers. I did hear about a rocket boasted hammer in one of the books but that seemed so limiting. and since I love to bring the hammer down I went to see what I'd like for a motor hammer. I thought of this. The hammer is based some what on the Tricone Roller design of rock drill bits.

this is my own rough mock up but I think it could work and I'm tempted to try and build it

admit it this thing would be scary comming at you with its grinding teeth and roaring engine

I dunno. Something that big and heavy would be easier to avoid, I'd think.

... admittedly the form of art I practice concentrates less on armour and more on avoidance, but even so, a dodge is a dodge. So to speak.

I painted the manifold for my chain axe, I then added the exhaust tubes and decided to add some brass tips to the exhaust tubes, they were left overs from a recent plumbing repair I think it looks pretty good

while out walking the dog today I came across a 12 foot length of industrial card board tubing,
(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/tube_zpsce682846.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/tube_zpsce682846.jpg.html)

now I decided this would be something I could use to build an old weapon I designed for the Weird West role playing game. this was for my mad science Char... Clarence Clemens (mark twains fictional and disgraced brother)

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/rocketrifle_zps84ef898e.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/rocketrifle_zps84ef898e.jpg.html)

the rifle would fire 2 foot long, rocket propelled steel bolts. carrying a stick of dynamite worth of explosive. the rockets wouldn't explode on contact they were timed and would explode the turn after they were fired. so a target could end up impaled as the thruster pins them to a wall frantically trying to yank the shaft out before the tnt detonates.

A breach block rifle the cross bars hold the rocket in place once the breach is closed, and the raised ridge down the barrel keep the rocket aimed straight, vents built into the breach guide the exhaust away from the wielder

I was inspired by single shot shot guns but I will admit it also resembles some 40 millimeter grenade launchers

Well I decided to build a servo skull using a left over skull I had laying around.

For those who don't know Servo Skulls are used by many in the warhammer universe.  a bleached human skull is implanted with an antigrav unite, sensors and other implants which vary depending on the desired use, some have weapons, some have small arms, others have larger sensor suites.

they are used as messengers, scouts, psychic familiars, mobile light weapons platforms, banner carriers,  pretty much anything you can think of...

Apparently this is considered something of an honor in universe,  in one book a guy was proud that his own personal servo skull was actually his fathers head... yeah warhammer 40k is a little messed up

the skull itself is a dollar store halloween prop  I removed sections of the left eye socket and lower jaw,  the optical sensor is disposable spice container (white pepper), with the core of a scotch tape role and a plastic piece of pipe.  I also added a some plastic shell from a scrapped power screwdriver

With respect to the bar down the side of the barrel to keep the rocket straight... usually the way you keep the rocket straight is spin it, since that uses the gyroscopic effect to keep it going straight even after it leaves the barrel...

Keeping it straight in the barrel will help, but not really all that much. Something you might want to consider. ;-]

LOL but thats only a problem if I was going to fire it for real,   though....  fireworks are now legal in my state...  Hmmmm

the bar would only keep it pointed straight while the rocket was in the rifle so it wouldn't get knocked off true while moving.  after it's fired I'd expect it to work with gyroscopic stabilization,  or maybe not it was a weapon built in the 1870's not sure if Clemens ever figured that out,  I never got to use the char

well I'm still working on my servo skull

First I removed several teeth and added two irregular fangs to the mouth

I slipped a large bolt into the empty eye socket

I then maped out the left hand side of the skull and jigsawed several pieces of pva foam for that side that will be the metal plates bolted onto the skull

I'm thinking of doing two small manipulator arms on the skull with maybe a mini flamer or plasma cutter

Well I've painted the skull and glued the pieces into place.

I've also installed a red led behind the cybernetic eye

I've also decided to name him Voxal...  I'm also going to see if I can do a green screen effect to add him into video so I can get Voxal to fly

I'll be adding some more stuff, pincer arms, and maybe a plasma cutter.  but do you think I should add flight engines to the outside? or should I make the flight systems be unknown

Well Voxal's manipulators are done

The arms were made from the legs of a cheap bug transformer knock offs I bought 5 years ago. (I bought 3 of them really cheap just to use in some project like this)
the pincer claws are the feet from said toy with long claws bolted to the toes so they can open and close. I added a micro chainsword ( butter knife and cloroplast) as well as light plasma disruptor (cloroplast, plumbing fixture, green led and part of a pen)

I think Voxal is almost finished don't you

A basic poncho I felt I'd do a curved bottom edge to better fit the possible gear pattern I wanted to put there, how ever looking at it I'm not sure stitching in a cog would look good or just silly. what do you think

Title: Re: Have Cog will Travel (Costume)

Personally, I think having the giant gear on the poncho throws it squarely in the "Look I have a gear on it it's steampunk now right guys right right it's steampunk" approach to steampunk. I won't deny, I've fallen prey to this kind of approach myself when I didn't know what else to do with a costume to make it fit into the culture at large better. As a decent rule of thumb, start with the period you're drawing inspiration from, then add "functions" (whether real or imaginary) from there. Rayguns I know are a debated topic, though they can certainly work if pulled off right. Gears should generally have some sort of "in-character" reason for them to exist (e.g. replacement hand, exoskeleton to have a stronger punch when fighting, etc etc).

Hope that helps!

*wipes the Dust off his art thread*   Hello every bunny

Just a update on the latest project by the humble bunny

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/hat2_zps4f4e277f.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/hat2_zps4f4e277f.jpg.html)

here is the basic hat I've made for my steampunk cowboy hat

I started with a sheet of faux leather I had sitting around and cut two round circles that would become the brim. I them measured the circumference of my head where I wanted the had to sit. I cut two equal lengths that would become the crown of the hat. I sewed those into a snug loop and tested them for fit.

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/hat1_zpsbea9a5c1.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/hat1_zpsbea9a5c1.jpg.html)

I pinned that to the brim and marked out the inner circle. since I wanted a stiff brim I also took a plastic for sale sign and cut it slightly smaller on the outer edge and larger on the interior circle. Not exactly in period but what the hell. I then started sewing. Working arround the brim of the has sewing the top and bottom pieces together. halfway through I slipped in the plastic sheet, and finished sewing the brim, I then took the crown and triple stitched it to the inner edge of the brim, Finally I used one of the pieces cut from the blank brims and sewed that onto the top of the crown.

its a long process sewing by hand, but I don't think its half bad as my first ever hat.

I'm planning on cleaning up the brim, adding a hat bands, I'm thinking barb wire strung with bird skulls, and possibly getting some dark brown shoe polish to stain the hat with... what do you think?

Title: Re: Prescription Converted Goggles (Costume)

A set of german motorcycle goggles I converted to prescription to allow me to use them. These will be great for any steampunk costume, or even for when I get that motorized bike conversion kit I want

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/googles3_zps6a3b226c.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/googles3_zps6a3b226c.jpg.html)

this was simple as can be as you might guess.

I got a set of lenses that almost fit the goggles,

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/googles1_zps09719cc0.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/googles1_zps09719cc0.jpg.html)

then cut away the frames to fit the goggles.

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/googles2_zps9476852e.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/googles2_zps9476852e.jpg.html)

I'm using hot glue to keep them in place

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/googles4_zpsbc616dc5.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/googles4_zpsbc616dc5.jpg.html)

The cool thing about this project is I used Zenni Optical for the lenses. Zenni optical is a website that allows you to upload your prescription and order glasses for very cheap. My current glasses only cost me 40 dollars, and they only cost that much because I choose a lens upgrade.

the ones used in the goggles cost me 12 bucks... thats 12 dollars for the frames and choosing the basic grade prescription lens which is free.

So if you have bad eyes like me I recommend using this site prices start at 7 bucks and at that price you could afford to build the lenses into any piece rather then having to building around a set of eye wear

hell even if your not into costuming you can get a great set of glasses for a great price here

Okay I know this really isn't art but I just finished working on this and after five days back breaking and at times bloody and painful labor its all done.

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/0516141246_zpsd35450fa.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/0516141246_zpsd35450fa.jpg.html)

Trenches dug down to keep out pests, wire fencing strung up with no gaps, pressure treated board sunk into the ground all around the enclosure and bolted to the base and reinforced with rocks before the trenches were refilled in. This is a nice damn chicken coop if I do say so my self. just need to put down the linoleum on the floor (inside the coop for easy cleaning) and put in the nesting boxes then its ready for chickens to move right in

Thanks Lionheart

We put in 6 nesting boxes today.  They made me redo the chicken wire today too.  I had to go around re fastening it with heavy gauge fencing staples.  I also ripped several lengths of pine board to reinforce the ends and tops of the chickenwire.

We will be getting our 6 chickens on Tuesday.  We are getting road island reds,  I'd preferences isa browns which if a bit dumb are super friendly but road island reds are all very friendly breed too.

My mom says we need to name one after a chicken dish in honor of our friends sweetpea's pet chickens Nugget, Dumpling, and Ragu.  I wanted to go with General Tso, but we aren't getting a rooster so it doesn't fit

I like heavy there is something so cheerful (maybe psychoticly so) about him.  And if you've ever played poker night at the inventory with him he's seems to be suffering from serious ptsd.

I'm also thinking of making prop sandviches, om nom nom, that seems to be so iconic for heavy
Title: Re: Winterising the Coop (construction)
Post by: thegayhare on September 28, 2014, 09:35:13 PM
Hi Hi all I thought I'd show off the latest in the Bunny's world of Chickens

Again I know its not really art but I'm proud of what I built

Me and mom took a day to winterize the coop

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/wintercoop_zps72247dbc.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/wintercoop_zps72247dbc.jpg.html)

We got three sheets of inch thick foam, 3 sheets of 1/8th inch lamanint paneling and a sheet of floor linoleum.

First I wired an outlet for the coop, we have space to plug in 3 devices, We have a Light on a timer since chickens need 14 hours of light for laying. we will also have a water dish heater to keep the waterer from freezing

We then layed out the new floor. The linoleum isn't really for the winterizing its to make clean up easier poo and shavings come right up no problems.

We cut the sheets of foam into pieces that fit between the studs. mainly 18 by 14 inch rectangles and pressed them into snuggly into place, we then cut the wood panels to fit. and nailed them to the studs.

With the coop winterized we also redid there arrangements. the nesting boxes are set against one wall in a 2 by 3 box pattern, and about a foot off the ground. I also built them new roosts since our old ones were two narrow for winter. In winter the roost have to be wide enough for the birds to stand flat footed so there belly feathers can cover the feet keeping them warm. So I built these new ones in a tilted ladder style, 4 perches in all each with space to fit 3 birds snuggly.

The girls seem to like it and have settled into a new pecking order. Emme and Sweetpea sleep on the top roost, with Gabby and Lizzy have picked out the next, and Spooky is low bird on the totem pole. with Cammy sleeping on top of the nests cause she wants a space on the top two perches

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/vlc2014-09-2820-08-37-63_zpsd7b48e60.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/vlc2014-09-2820-08-37-63_zpsd7b48e60.jpg.html)  (http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/vlc2014-09-2820-09-13-98_zps8f14378e.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/vlc2014-09-2820-09-13-98_zps8f14378e.jpg.html)

Something else I made for our winter coop
But I thought they were pretty cool
these gravity feeders are to save us space inside.

Its a simple enough design, lengths of 3 inch wide pvc pipe connected to 2 different connections to give us that nice open bottom. I uses a 90 degree and a 45 degree bend in that order to make it work best. I then screwwed it onto the a piece of cut to size plywood with metal strapping.

Though you don't see it here I make a set of brackets on the back that let me hang it from the inside lip of the window and a set of rubber feet in the bottom corners of the plywood. this way its up off the floor in the coop for cleaning and while its affixed to the wall I can slide it back and forth along that window. I'm gonna get some covers for the tops cause they like to look out that window and this way they wont poop in there food

I've said it before but your chickens are wonderful :3

I always find the idea of winter-proofing a coop interesting. Around here it's more important to summer-proof it - I'll have to put up some more shadecloth for mine in the next few months.

That gravity feeder's an awesome idea.

lol Thanks... I love the girls they are so much fun

My mom wants a couple americana to add to the flock next spring...  she likes the blue and green eggs they lay

its all about the climate

since in a few months they will be stuck in there pretty much 24/7 with some winters getting 6 foot high snow drifts we feel insulating is important.  but a lot of folks tell us they dont have to be warm.  you just have to keep there combs and feet from freezing.

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/vlc2014-09-2915-55-42-93_zpsa1a8961e.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/vlc2014-09-2915-55-42-93_zpsa1a8961e.jpg.html)

Its supposed to be some sort of hightech future sniper rifle,  maybe 50 call or partical cannon

My sis asked if I might be able to make her a prop for a costume something like a Boarderlands sniper rifle last month... so I showed her this and offered to make her a full sized version.
I'm even thinking of building it around a nerf gun so it'll be functional

Well this is the season that suddenly everything tastes like pumpkin...  I'm sorry but somethings should not taste like pumpkin...

But it also means that there are tons of cheap spooky stuff.

this isnt done yet but

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/vlc2014-09-2915-57-48-20_zps5d61f245.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/vlc2014-09-2915-57-48-20_zps5d61f245.jpg.html)
I took a skull,  and 2 sickles and made this

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/vlc2014-09-2915-56-46-60_zpsc4b0d0d0.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/vlc2014-09-2915-56-46-60_zpsc4b0d0d0.jpg.html)(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/vlc2014-09-2915-57-04-52_zps6dc47fdb.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/vlc2014-09-2915-57-04-52_zps6dc47fdb.jpg.html)

I also used some costume teeth to add fangs.  I just need to paint some black and grey details before setting the green glass in the sockets

I have another similar skull thats gonna sit on top of oh a 40k like tech priest staff
that one used 4 sickles, 4 plastic sai, a skull, some pva foam and random pieces.  but there ant anny pics of that yet.

but even after all that Im left with this

(http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv256/TheGayHare/vlc2014-09-2915-55-59-75_zpsdaf86c5e.jpg) (http://s689.photobucket.com/user/TheGayHare/media/vlc2014-09-2915-55-59-75_zpsdaf86c5e.jpg.html)

I got a clever, machete, 8 sickles (there were more but I've used them), 6 skull bobble heads (broken down into the skulls, spines and really nice bases) 2 maces, to sai, a skull, a sack of small skulls, fingers, and a pair of hands.

I love the shape of the hand sickles,  If I make another power claw,  I'm gonna use these for the fingers.  I got the bobble heads because all the pieces are usefull  the spines fit into the hand to make a great handle and the bases are rather high quality.

I wanna make something but I dont know what...  I also feel kinda cool just having a sack full of bones and skulls

im working on a 40k project and wondered which color should I use?

what looks better the red or blue... and which would be more fitting for a tech priest

Tech priests generally are robed in red with white or yellow trim

I know red is for mars the home of the mechanicum but thats so much red,  and my servo skull already has a red mark  I dont know

well since I've been making skulls including my deamon skull and the yet to be shown tech priest skull staff topper I decided to make another warhammer skull. I think I'll have this one mounted on a scepert like device with gauss flayer built in

I used the plastic skull I preformed all my test cuts from the other skulls on as the base. I then cut out a face plate.

I think I'm gonna have to trim the cheek bones a bit and narrow the jaw some before I add the rest oh the platting but Its a good start

I finaly Finished my Tech Priest staff top. I decided to co servo skull style variant with the bionic eye. I got the Idea for the mounts from looking at the librarians psychic hoods,

I like to think of it roiling with power focused into a laz beam from that mechanical eye.

I used a dollar store skull, 4 dollar store sickles to make the mount and horns, with the base of the sickles used for the base of the spikes which was dollar store sais.

the mecha eye is a squeeze bottle with a few cast off plastic parts. I also used some eva foam painted silver or black then I used lengths of coaxial cable to accent the edges

hi all

I know its been a long time since my last post but I thought I'd post my latest piece.

if you remember my cowboy hat

The color wasn't right and it was rather plain

I learned that leather dyes wouldn't work well on the faux leather, but I learned that for this artificial leather there is a cheap alternitive that works better.  its a simple mix of water and acrylic paint  that actualy does stain the base material.   It now has a nice dark, weathered look.

the hat band is a dark blue to almost black panel of quilting material sewn into a tube with the seam against the hat itself.

I have some brass  accents I am thinking of adding to the band, atificial barb wire, small bird skulls and and a crest  but I'm not sure if I'll use them all.  I might just stick to the barbed wire

mostly its just something fun.

I have my deamon skull on a shelf looking cool,  as well as my Voxal my servo skull, or the necron head

other things are for some part of a costume, like my plasma pistol, or or the tech priest staff topper

some are costume and practical.   the cowboy had will be usefull for keeping the sun off this summer

Others are a mix of things.  my chain axe is a realy cool and fun project that will look great as part of a few costumes I'm also working on

My sis thinks I should start up an etsy shop...  I doubt my props would be worth anything  but you never know

If I had some freinds and some equipment I'd love to make props for short films but its almost impossible to do the stuff I want when I'd have to do all parts similtanously

Here we have the final form of my cowboy hat

I added the barbed wire, and a liner to the inside,  I decided against the skulls I was going to use,  I think they would end up cluttering it to much,

I figured the barbed wire would look good after seeing Rattlesnake Jake's from Rango

the wire is a latex costume type I found on Ebay

here is my finished Steampunk gas mask.

I stripped the filters off a cheap respirator. stripped off some of the plastic filter pieces. I found one of my old broken over ear gaming headsets, and stripped off the ear pieces. I took it apart and removed the red plastic highlights. I then sprayed on 3 coats of flat gray paint over the mask and ear pieces. I then did one coat of silver and a final coat of a lacquered spray paint that's supposed to simulate a hammered iron finish. I then started snapping it together, added the black front cap, and replaced the inner red vent highlights. I used the faux leather ear covers as part of the filter because I thought it would help give it that mixed old fashioned and future tech

I then took three of my miniature plastic skulls. sliced off the back and mounted each of them onto a small piece of pva foam and drove a halo of small brass nails into the skulls and attached it to the frame.

I think I might adding some red to the spike tips.

okay its finally finished

Here we have my completed functional 40k Chainaxe prop

the motor is a electric screwdriver attached to a 6 volt rechargeable remote control car battery pack. the base is a mix of cloroplast and pva foam

the trigger is a momentary switch in the axe handle, and the teeth are soft foam sewed onto a loop of velcro. the drive wheel is wrapped in the mated hook side velcro.

Hi Hi all

Ive been working on an upgrade to my plasma pistol.  I don't have any close up shots yet but I did do a new test fire video

https://youtu.be/gg5v1SZqxBk

I wasn't to happy with the power out put of my last test firing. I mean the plasma barely punched through a pumpkin. I stripped out and upgraded the magnetic accelerator coils as well as refined the focus aperture. I dont have any more pumpkins so I decided to use Spooky here to test the effectiveness Its okay she bit me today, I have to do this to keep the other chickens in there place. I also used a small servo skull I've built and named Voxal to capture footage at a different angle.

I'm thinking of uploading a second video in a few days of me sitting with my chickens playing this video on a table petting Spooky "look I made you youtube famous"

Also Spooky is an excellent name for a chicken, I might steal it for the chicken my neighbours gave me that doesn't actually have a name >:3

I agree Spooky is a good name for a chicken.  We named her that because shes the most skittish  the first one to bolt for cover if something new shows up.   usualy shes quite docile too.  wont let me touch her but usually quite frendly.  but yesterday  I spotted her in a nesting box and when I went to sheck if there was an egg she hissed at me.  then she lunged and bit me several times even after a bribe of oats.  after that she squawked for 15 minutes straight non stop.   It was to much an example had to be made.

*giggles*  I actually thought about that llearch

I thought it would have been funny to have the fire ball reveal a roasted chicken...  but I couldn't waste it.   I then thought of putting a single egg in on top of a pile of ash...  as a joke that I vaporized the chicken around it and left it unharmed but I don't think any one would have gotten the joke.

But here I have lighted and unlighted close ups..

in the second lighted one I'm showing how the trigger makes the barrel light up

I'm feeling alittle down today  I mean a few days after jokingly disintegrating one of my girls I may lose one for real  Emmie seems to be egg bound.   I've tried and she she seemed to like the hot bath  and is recovering well in the sun but shes still not eating.   this is how we lost sweet pea.   we seeme to have noticed it earlier this time but sometihng like this is really heard to treat and most treatments arent really that effective

Hello all

I volunteer at a local library while I'm looking for a new job. It helps keep down the blank spaces on my resume, as well as being fun. this years summer reading program was "Heroes and Villians" and the kick off involved a party and games for the kids where we encouraged people to come as there favorite heroe or villian.

My first thought was I could be Judge Death.... my ultimate favorite villian but my sister talked me out of it since I already scare litle kids and no one would get the referance since its a fairly obscure british comic. I thought of making a hell boy outfit but decided agaisnt it since parents might complain. I could have gon with genaric cyborg monster but that seemed like a cheap out, and again would scare the kids (even though that is half the fun) so instead I went with a simple design Marvels Kingpin of crime. It helps that my general frame fits the char too. A button up purple shirt, a tie, my white meat cutting jacket, a dollar store rose. the cane was the haft of one of my sword canes toped with the globe of a solar garden night light and I made the cigar out of a plastic cylinder wrapped in brown cloth and with red foam o simulate the red hot tip.

It was a blast we had a mario, 2 iron men, a captain america, a who family of mandalorians, a fairy princes and others show up. and they had me running a few games for the kids

Now I don't know how many people saw my post describing the story world I came up with  but If your interested the link i here

http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,10379.0.html

now the basic Idea is that in this world human live on cites on the backs and part of giant kiagu like beasts I call BioTitans.   these come in many shapes and sizes so I put together a little sketch of one of the beasts

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/10/17/751255_sm-T-class%20titan.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/751255-T-class%20titan.html)

I'm not a good artist so I will admit the outlins of these are traced.   I used a Galapagos tortoise as the body  and wasp nests, barnacles, and mushrooms

I figure the armoured barnacles would act as factories and low level hab blocks similar to the the ones from judge dredd,   the mushrooms would be powerplants amd housing for the wealthier populous,  and the Waspnests are millitary functions,  searving as moterpool, artillery, rocket launchers, and aircraft hangers.   Course ther are also several layers of the city down below the shell,  farms in the geneticly modified gut flora, rendering plants siphoning off the turtles fat for city use.  damage control teams patroling the nerves, or braving the heat of the  blood vessels, or the super heated furnace of the heart.  repairing damage and extending the life of the titan.   others iinhabit the head  guiding the titan with controls wired right into the beasts cortex

(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/10/21/752079_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/752079-.html)

this is a rough sketch of a War Squid. Its really rough I may clean it up later and redo some of the mounts

War Squids are some of the largest airships used by Paracities in combat (squids for fighting octopus for trade), these are tiny when compared to a biotitan though. And this isn't even the largest type of war squid they breed

The war squids are engineered with huge gas bladders, and there highly effecient nanite collonys keep them aloft. how ever since they are essentially lighter then air vessels weight is a factor instead of being armed with heavy projectile shot they carry powerfull energy weapons. ranging from focused sonics, to bioluminescent laser cannons. although there lower deck also carry gravity bombs either the explosive or hungry kinds. and they have been enginiered to be able to generate massive chargers of electrical energy that they can discharge when fighting with there two paddle like hunting arms
